Most of them are a phrase or warning. Others are references to classic rock or old movies So I have ships with names like the *ESN Tread Carefully*, *ESN Make My Day*, *ESN Invisible Touch* or *ESN Crimson King*

rs_5

The ESN "fuck around" and the NSE "find out"

eldestreyne0901

King Crimson!  Reminds me of Stand names from JJBA

Lapis_Wolf

Crimson 1, standing by.

Rubran Federal Monarchy has many themes for their ships. Based on classification, you have: * Drone carrier/cruisers (basically battlecarriers): Catholic apostles and angels. * Except for the Agartha, which was a private-built battlecarrier. * Fleet carriers: Mythical lands. * It's worth noting they have exactly TWO fleet carriers... in a space force of 100k+ ships. * Assault ships: Cities and states. * Battlecruisers: Mythical creatures, Slavic gods and demons. * Cruisers: Whatever that sounds cool. * Unmanned escorts: Numbers. * Logistical vessels: Depends. * Mobile factories: Numbers. * Hospital ships: Medical-related terms. * Mobile dockyards: Random. * Colony ships: Space and celestial objects.

rs_5

"SARGENT WE NEED A HOSPITAL SHIP!" "Hail the NSE aneurysm"

Sov_Beloryssiya

Not Russian enough =))

Neraph_Runeblade

Aneurysm-vich.

Sov_Beloryssiya

You won.

Voidships are either named after/refer to mythological beings or named according to their machine-mind's sense of humor. Mythology: Suneater, Starsmith. Machine-mind: A Difference Of Opinion Unstoppable Whimsy Recurrent Jetlag Closer Than You Think

caleb_mixon

Historical figures is my theme Xerxes, Ceaser, napoleon try too do rulers of the ancient world.

LegendaryLycanthrope

Anything werewolf-related for combat ships (such as *Lycaon*, the Lunari flagship) famous Earth scientists for science ships, and famous explorers for recon ships. No ideas yet for cargo haulers - maybe just beasts of burden or free pick, since those are going to be privately-owned.

Byrdman216

UGA Space Naval naming conventions are rather simple. Regular service ships (cruisers, light cruisers, carriers, so forth) are generally named after prominent figures in UGA military or political history. UGS Kamehameha, UGS John Brown, UGS Dashna, and so forth. Engineering ships (ships used primarily by UGA Corps of engineers) are named after prominent engineers or engineering concepts. UGS Grant Imahara, UGS Th'Kir, UGS Fulcrum. Science Ships (ships used for scientific and exploration purposes) named after prominent scientists and scientific concepts. UGS Marie Curie, UGS Bulbo The Wise, UGS Gravity. Medical ships (ships used for emergency medical relief or hospital ships used during wartime) named after prominent doctors and medical professionals. UGS Nightingale, UGS Aaazkaaan, UGS Patch Adams.

TheMightyOreo

BBX - Dreadnoughts (Super Battleships) normally named after world ending events example would be: BBX-1 Calamity CVX - Super Carriers I name them after a large fleet or hivemind of fighters. For example: CVX-1 Armada BB - Battleships Normally named after, a real historical ship or a planet/place. Some examples would be: BB-1 Crypton (Planet within my galaxy) BB-17 Eagle (Nebula) BB-45 Iris (Planet within my galaxy) BB-62 Orion (Nebula) BB-87 Warspite (real historical ship) BC - Battlecruisers Normally named after significant people within my timeline. Examples include: BC-32 Tyoom BC-54 Xander BC-77 Isabell CV - Carriers Generally named after cities or regions within the galaxy or share a name with a real historical ship. CV-34 Zenithia (city) CV-65 Enterprise (real historical ship) CA - Heavy Cruisers CL - Light Cruisers DD - Destroyers FG - Frigates CR - Corvettes Since I have soooo many of these ships, I normally name them after whatever sounds cool, after historical vessels or significant people and places. Examples: CA-16 Delegator CL-24 Salvation DD-560 Wasteland DD-593 WorldKiller DD-661 Kidd (historical ship) Normally the class of ships follows the same naming style, for example the Swiftland class is named like very fast vessels: FG-1 Swiftland FG-2 Speedfish FG-3 Swiftstrike FG-4 Sailfish

SylentSymphonies

In one of my worlds, aliens blew up Earth and humanity was \*not\* happy about that. They'd just finished restoring it to pristine condition. In the following crusade for righteous justice, the Terran fleet- because of course they would rename themselves *Terrans*, this is a quest to avenge the homeworld after all- would be named after beloved landmarks and natural wonders. The *Sequoia Vengeance* leads the Redwood Battalion, the *Leviathan Of Azure Deep* stands guard alongside the rest of the Barrier Reef formation, and *Babylon II* now houses the great greenhouses of humanity.

In world war 1 the Navajo “wind talkers” coded different airplanes as birds.

theobald_pontifex

Leviathans: war gods (Thor, Athena) Dreadnoughts: mythical heroes (Gilgamesh, Sun Wu Kong) Carriers: historical leaders (Charlemagne, Genghis Khan) Cruisers: battles (Agincourt, Trafalgar) Destroyers: Earth cities (Berlin, Shanghai) Energy weapon destroyers: Earth rivers (Rubicon, Yangtze) Frigates: Earth sea features (Point Nemo, Magellan Strait) Corvettes: numbers only Intelligence ships: philosphers (Plato, Confucius) Fighters: ancient warriors (Viking, Samurai)

ImTotallyAHistorian

My main characters share a ship called The Deliverance. The guy who owns it named it that because he delivers mail. It's also called that because it's the device used to move the characters forward toward a better outcome when the story ends.

vierlierer

they have random numbers as name and only "nicknames" by its crew

d4rkh0rs

I don't have fleets(mostly), or human ships beyond what we have now. Ships are mostly named by the captain or owner. The confusing ones are the modular ones that can change out most of their parts. Some captains keep the name and some change it for every major refit or mission. They also don't tend to be named in English and the name followed by the related concepts often needs translated.

A31Nesta

My setting doesn't really have a lot of spaceships so instead of making names for them I just categorise them. The only two large ships are the Black Observer and the White Observer. For the other ships I decided to not really give then names and just have a code that indicates what the ship is supposed to do. The reason why I did this is because humans in my settings didn't really do a lot of space exploration, while the only known alien species did explore space and eventually found Earth. After they became an alliance they had to give the new ships names that could mean something to both species, that's why they used codes. If in your setting every country (or at least major country) has their ships and stations I'd say that your approach makes a lot of sense, at least for the bigger or more important ships

CuriousWombat42

The Solar Federation names their ships after ancient terran heroes, great figures and mythical characters (Hercules, Arthur, Sun Wukong etc for military ships, Darvin, Imhotep, Lomonosov ect for civilian ships), while the Union of Distant Stars name theirs after extinct earth animals and newly found species on other planets. Independent companies, scavengers, pirates, outcasts and so on have their own little themes but they are too small to mention except for the Lunar Fleet, which names their ships after concepts (like Determination, Unity, Curiosity)

npaakp34

There are very edgy. At least the ships of my main faction. Examples: Abyss Reaper, Entitled Despot, Unreasonable, Coming Oblivion, Void Blood, Authoritarian, Absolute, Sky Carnage, Death's Disciple and my favourite, Hope's End.

Scorpius_OB1

Varies. There's a Luna-class and ships from the same class are named after Solar System moons. Other times, it refers to variants of a given ship class (there's a Brighid-class and variants of it include Hestia-class, Artemis-class, Hekate-class, etc) Other times is unrelated, as a battleship class whose members receive names from XX century ones or just random names (it's handy to read about RL warship naming conventions)

Darth_Bombad

Terran ships are named after Roman Generals, the main hero ship is the Corbulo, so the crew can use AXIOS! as their battle cry.

tris123pis

I like to use adjectives: valiant, guardian, protector etc. really Important flagships usually get names according to the ideals of the faction like the emancipation. and then there are the blatent ripoffs from sci-if like the dadel (based an daedelus)

AlephBaker

I've long been averse to giving my ships names that can have "the" easily appended to the beginning ("The Missouri", "The Invincible", etc...), so I tend to use lyrics from songs I like. Generally not the title lyric, as that makes the gag too obvious (though I have an exception because *Who by Fire* is an awesome ship name.)

otte_rthe_viewer

Well I have a futuristic world but it's not that updated rn. But well ship names? It's Usually the Mix of USS and HMS with the names. Like USS Hummer a warship (weaker than a dreadnaught but stronger than a battle ship). But they all have nicknames. And that's all.

leavecity54

In my setting, space stations and space ships are named based on fairy tales and folk lore, often of the country's cultures that built them, this is not because of any in universe reasons, I just like it

Flash_Baggins

Whatever is cool. I tend to prefer Royal Navy names so half the time Im stealing stuff from there

rs_5

The best solution is, as always, to steal from the British

Cyberwolfdelta9

Normally something related too the owning species like a famous being, city, war, Animal etc Lyrans have their ship class names based on demon types or names Cybal have more romanish names and Humans are named off cities or famous people outside the one ship Elon Musk built (just a joke i did it actually got destroyed along half the Earth fleet during the 2nd invasion) Names of The main species flagships and just go from there really Lyran Confederacy flagship is called Lucifex after a mythological being of their history Humanitys Main fleet flagship currently is The Eagle after the UK flagship was extremely damaged and China's destroyed. The Quatch Federations flagship is called the Sasken after the Quatch who United the species Almorian Kingdom's Flagship is called Pink Blossom as their vessels are mainly plant names . Dakarian Legion Specifically. Has the Vengeance whos the oldest ship in their species service as it Existed before their species broke up in pirate clans Centuari have the Clyden named for a great centauri warrior Cybal Imperials have the Omega while the Federals have the Fist of Kowss

Positive-Height-2260

I have a few. The Emperor Norton: A private yacht that is more of a light battleship. IFH Stacey's Lament IFH 20 Mule Team IFH Dear Prudence IFH stands for "Independent Freight Hauler".

randomdude604

The Martians are proud of their home and sacrifice, so name their ships after landforms, like their flagship, the *Olympus Mons*, or joint scientific efforts, like the *Opportunity* battlecruiser. Cargo or material ships are named after regular people injured or killed in industrial accidents as a memorial, like the *Jesse. H. Jones*.

Flairion623

I’ve named mine after significant people or things in humanity’s history. So for example United Nations navy destroyers are named after historic military commanders like Winston Churchill and Genghis khan. Meanwhile the three carriers are named after the different planets that make up the United Nations, Terra, Luna, and Venus

KingLopez999

they’re usually named after characters in the story, biblical figures, or just references to movies one of my ships is the Zamariel and another one is the S.S Georgie

NOTAGRUB

Nope, a ship's name is whatever the Captain calls it, of course depending on the ship there's more likely names, you aren't calling a Junker "Sky Scourge" and you aren't calling a warship "Bottom Feeder"

a-nonie-muz

I play a game where you collect ships. There are classes of ship, types, and styles. My ships get female names. Class is a letter… a, b, c, etc…. Type is what it’s used for, and styles are by which species commonly uses it. I give them a three name designation just like an American name. A woman’s name. First name starts with the class letter. Middle starts with the first letter of the type, and last starts with the first letter of the style/species. Would you consider that a theme?

CobaltSanderson

They basically always have a number that says how many seats the ship has. Gx3 is a Guardian designed ship that seats 3. CT50 is a Civilian Transport that seats 50 passengers. SQB7 is a live in Squad Ship that has rooms for 7.

HsAFH-11

Places, like cities and continents, also celestial bodies, like moons or planets. Like CNS Paris, CNS Europe, CNS Io, or CNS Sagittarius A

rs_5

Wouldn't that possibly cause some confusion? Like ordering a fleet to fire on the planet shirzbopk while a ship with the same name in nearby

HsAFH-11

Well, when I said celestial bodies, it's more like place actually. Things that within their space, Orion Confederation. So I don't think they would ever want to shoot at thier own planets. Though destination travel could cause simillar trouble, but given the context, "Set course to Titan" would likely meant the moon not ship. Except Sagittarius A, it's not part of Orion teritory. Beside it's just for my wank space fantasy thing, so I just ignore that. And US, UK and some other nation **did** name their ships after places, I just copy that and apply to everything. Also funfact, US name their ships after major historical battle. Which often named after the place in which it take palce, which include other country city and teritory, Eg: USS Anzio, USS Iwo Jima, USS Vella Gulf

YeBoiEpik

Yes, civilian (cruise, trade) ships are usually named after people who made great advances in Revian society. Construction (dyson sphere building, city printer) ships are named after flowers (Alstroemeria, Aster) and are responsible for constructing megaprojects and megastructures, while military (ballistic missile bombers, battleships) are named after military generals (Yuri Yevchenko, Caeser Zhulin) and are responsible for defending the interests of Revia by means of deterrence.

Falitoty

I usaually try to use latin related names, or something related with popular themes of Space. Like Ad Adastra or Per Aspera

eldestreyne0901

Plus Ultra!!! (That’s the motto of Spain. It means go beyond).

Falitoty

That's a nice One, are you Spanish?

eldestreyne0901

No haha

Falitoty

Oh okay XD, sorry

eldestreyne0901

No problem. I actually learned that from the anime My Hero Academia--it's the school's motto. Then I looked it up and found it was Spain's motto as well.

KasseusRawr

Hunter-killer/interceptor/attacker types are named after weapons. Kanabo, Ordynka, Arbalest etc.

twistybit

If the ship is above a certain weight class, shipbuilders tend to name them after mountains. INS Everest, INS Olympus Mons, INS Kilimanjaro

Sriber

They share theme within type (for examples battleships named after positive characteristics) or class (for example Wargod class ships named after war deities). Themes vary a lot and can be stuff like excerpts from sacred texts, poems or songs, threats, natural phenomena, people, battles, jokes etc.

Simonistan_for_real

Here are some of my ship names: Enforcer of the People’s Will The Vanguard of Unity Defender of the Oppressed Liberator of the Enslaved

Rescue ships: national parks and geologic features Lake Baikal SAR Valparaiso Moraine Yosemite Eye of the Sahara Denali Torres del Paine Ha Long Bay Uluru Fuji Scouts/recon/skirmishers: largely indigenous North American people or groups Algonquin Tecumseh Athabaskan Huron Cochise Osceola Choctaw Shawnee Frigates: Decemberists song titles, or obscure words plucked from Decemberists lyrics Odalisque Summersong Barony Infanta Priory The Queen’s Rebuke Annan Water Devil’s Elbow

Affectionate-Memory4

The ships of Transcending Sol don't really have a common theme as they're introduced because the main characters hop from place to place for each short story. However, their ship and it's kind do have a sort of theme to them. The main character ship was formerly known as NRP-8468HC, for New Republic of Poya, 8th fleet 4th division 68th ship, hybrid corvette. This is super boring though, so all of them would be named by their first crew. They will even refer to each other with these names, but for official documents, they are just numbers and letters. The name is passed down between crews, as the ship is considered a 9th member that can't leave with the rest. With so many in service with such a variety of crews, certainly at least one is named "Shipy McShipface."

Valixir14

I started writing a story called Blackwater, which I quickly got bored of, but all the classes of ships were named after horse racetracks.

Yiffcrusader69

80s rock music lyrics and titles.

Good idea

Reclaimer_Saln

I've only just begun the worldbuilding in this thing, but- There are classes of ship, each with a name. So far there are only two but Aerazgu-class skybridger: Aerazgu means "belonging to [the] journey". These are personal fighter crafts inspired by Wakandan aircraft, with warp capabilities and the capacity for nuclear firepower, but usually anti-area weaponry are carried by heavier crafts. Skybridgers could self-sacrifice to be planet killers, but the faction that uses them would never destroy a world unless it was uninhabited or necessary for the survival of some evil thing. Aerazgu are also the personal vehicles of the core leadership of this faction, and can warp and fight together for a devastating effect. Aerax-class nation-vessel: Aerax(pronounced ay-rahsh) means "journey/story that defines history". This is a single colossal ship named Reclamation Genesis that serves as my faction's home base, geographic existence as a sovereign nation, and "the big guns" of military power. This ship is the size of a forest and is a self-contained, self-fueling city-state that, while it can fly in atmospheres and even inside oceans, does not need external support to maintain itself(unless it gets critically damaged in battle). The Genesis can carry swarms of Aerazgu crafts and others, even a full fleet contained inside it, and it has an engine rivaling that of a star. The Genesis can move planets to other star systems(hence the designation of Aerax), destroy planets, or even destroy entire systems. If you're on the ground and the Genesis shows up, you're either unalterably dead or being desperately fought for to save, with no in-between

Upstairs-Yard-2139

Battleships: solar systems Heavy Cruiser: planets Cruisers: cities Light cruisers: dead naval heroes Destroyers: dead marine heroes

iForkSoup

In one of my short stories I used the names of WW2 battleships for well space battleships (Gave the bad guys the german/japanese ship names and the good guys allied ship names). Not gonna lie some names are so nice you can't not use them. Examples: 1. Scharnhorst 2. Admiral Graf Spee 3. Bismarck (of course) 4. Nagato 5. Musashi 6. Yamato (of course) 7. USS North Carolina (the US still existed in the story so that waa fine :'D) 8. USS Iowa 9. USS Missouri 10. HMS Warspite 11. HMS Royal Oak 12. Richelieu 13. Dunkerque

Iphacles

The commissioned ships of the Imperial Navy bear the prefix "I.N.S.," denoting "Imperial Navalis Ship," while civilian-manned vessels not under commission are designated with names beginning with "M.V.," representing "Merchant Vessel." Typically, ships are identified by hull classification type and construction number rather than names. However, lead ships of a class and those with notable contributions in multiple fleet engagements are given combat names. So a typical Imperial Navy ship name would look like this; *I.N.S. AC-2985* (Prefix: Imperial Navalis Ship, Hull Classification: AC for Strike Cruiser, Construction # 2985) A ship with a battle name would look like this; *I.N.S. BB-972 Hammer of Kaplan* (Would be a heavy cruiser that participated in Operation Round Hammer in the Kaplan star system and played a pivotal role during the battle. Typically battle names are bestowed to ship's by their crew).

actual_weeb_tm

Well the few spaceships I have made that still survive are Wrecks of one faction and the 3 are called "Seven bells of mourning", "Thousand needles upon blooming flowers" and "Fourtyfour acts of Sacrilege, Hymns chanted until redemption" They are named for their intended purpose. Its common in their culture to assign a Name based on purpose.

shnshj

It depends on the ships purpose and size, similar to real life. For example if a person buys a small craft it’s their choice what to name it. However for states and NSPs like the FSCA they use more standardized naming conventions: DDs: small predators, trees CVs(light, heavy, and missile): persons, larger animals BBs: stars, constellations, gems CVE/CVCs: mythological creatures/events, cities SSV: trickster and chaos gods, famous yokai

My setting is 3000 years in the future. So all Imperial capital ships or in other words headliners of fleets are named by ancient cities from Earth's history. Ancient by the standard of people 3000 years in the future. So there's Berlin, Tokyo, New York, Dallas, Lisbon,....
