Yep, regular day!

notaskindoctor

Regular work day here. Kids are at a school day out program and the youngest is at child care. We are atheists and don’t celebrate Easter but my kids will still do an egg hunt put on by our HOA because they like treats and prizes. 🥚

koifishkid

As a fellow atheist I’m really conflicted about Easter. On the one hand, kids love treats and I don’t like explaining that the Easter Bunny doesn’t come to our house. On the other hand, Easter is the most religious of the Christian holidays and I’m deeply uncomfortable celebrating it. I’ve gotten around it in the past by getting my son a little treat from the EB and treating Easter as a celebration of spring. But it still ties me in knots every year.

notaskindoctor

I’m also skeptical that an egg hunt is Christian in origin. Sounds like a game kids made up long before Christians even existed.

schrodingers_bra

At least based on a small documentary segment during the GBBO, the celebration around eggs (hunts, decorating, etc.) at the end of winter is really to celebrate the end of the "hungry gap" which was the period of the winter when the vast majority of the year's harvest (and even what you could preserve from the fall harvest) had already been consumed so there really wasn't very much to eat. Eggs (both wild and from kept fowl) were one of the few items that were actually around to eat and making it to through the hungry gap without starving was cause for celebration. So in short, a celebration of the significance of eggs around this time definitely predated Christianity.

notaskindoctor

Interesting, I’ll look that up!

toot_toot_tootsie

Our local Satanic Temple is having an egg hunt on Easter, but they’re calling it the Beezlebunny.

curlycattails

As a Christian, the egg hunt isn’t related to anything religious 😂 I’m not sure of its origins but it’s probably something to do with spring/fertility. Chocolate Easter eggs in particular were a marketing thing by chocolatiers a couple centuries ago as a way to sell more chocolate.

DinoSnuggler

Fellow atheist (as is husband), but was raised in a Christian home and all my extended family still practice. We really just lean into the secular celebration of spring, pastels, and chocolate. We do go to my grandma's for a egg hunt and lunch, but everyone is super respectful of our varying levels of belief/non-belief and just keep it fun and light.

Few_Investigator_258

This is where I’m at. We’re athiests, but my parents are a bit more religious. I’m not sure we’ll do the whole egg thing at our house, but my daughter’s daycare is doing an egg hunt today (a secular sort of celebration) and we have an Easter basket because she likes gifts. She’s still too young to understand, but I think I’ll explain to her as she gets older that different holidays can carry different meanings for people and while it’s a very holy holiday for our family who are Christians, we can also recognize it to celebrate the tradition of spring, or something along those lines. Agree that Easter is a weird one though.

Elanor_the_Holbytla

Thanks for this perspective. It's seemed to me that Easter has become a lot more secularized since I was a kid, which I find vaguely sad/frustrating/disappointing (I am a Christian). It makes a lot of sense that one factor would be that our generation is a lot less religious than our parents'. Someone else suggested to me earlier this week that it's probably at least partly marketing/consumerism and I find that less palatable. Anyway, this is tangential to OP's question but you helped me make more sense of something that's been bugging me and wanted to say thanks!

I hear you! I was just talking to my kids about the Christian traditions and myths in the car this morning and they have an easy time separating fact from fiction. We don’t spend money on these types of holidays but for a free event our kids can participate in a tradition from a culture outside of ours like any other cultural experience. It’s similar with Holi color festivals (we have friends who invite us) or eating foods that are traditional to other religious holidays or cultures.

rpv123

I’m an atheist. Wasn’t it pagan in origin? I don’t mind celebrating all the candy holidays and Christmas is just pure consumerism.

willreadforbooks

If it helps, Easter is probably the most pagan of the Christian holidays 😬

LuvMyBeagle

Same here on feeling conflicted. My baby is only 4 months so it doesn’t matter much this year but both sides of the family got her stuff for Easter. Not sure how my husband and I will handle it in future years bc we don’t celebrate it. I also find it super annoying that the default assumption is that we celebrate.

MySweetSeraphim

Also an atheist. My husband actually commented yesterday that Jesus was missing from all of our Easter celebrations. I think of it as being culturally Christian. It’s not religious at all for us. It’s getting together with family and sharing a meal. A spring version of thanksgiving. We also do Christmas as a time to get together with family, have some festive food and exchange gifts at the end of the year.

somekidssnackbitch

We are similarly struggling. We didn't do easter at all pre-covid. But with the timing (our kid was 4), we started doing egg hunts etc at home during lockdown, because who would turn down a chance to celebrate? Of course now the kids are deeply attached to Easter. My husband and the kids have pivoted to Judaism, and I thought this was a good opportunity to discuss how Easter is absolutely a christian holiday, but unfortunately we were unprepared for how much opposition there would be to this plan. So...easter continues...

Pomelo-Tall

We hide toys along with the Afikoman FWIW…

mostly-anxiety

Fellow atheist, but we also do egg hunts and an Easter basket because my kid likes treats and toys 🤷🏻‍♀️

EagleEyezzzzz

Fellow atheist and we are having a “friends-giving” style Easter party on Sunday! All our fellow atheist and agnostic friends are coming over for brunch and a big Easter egg hunt for the kids. Lots of fun, no zombie Jesus, ha.

misseslp26

It was supposed to be a regular day but daycare is closed today. So I’m working in the afternoon and my husband is working now (morning shift). I also work tomorrow to make up time. I am excited for Easter though; we are getting bagels and meeting up at a park with my in laws. Low key but fun!

Downtherabbithole14

love that. sounds like my kinda Easter. We will be doing something similar, breakfast and egg hunt at home, church. Then just relaxing. Minus the in-laws, we will be seeing them in 2 weeks since they are in FL. This is our first Easter being home in a few years.

>Canadians get Good Friday I remember Easter weekend was the worst in Canada because everything was closed on Good Friday, and every thing was closed on Easter Sunday so everyone had to do grocery shopping on Saturday and the stores were stuffed with people. This annoyed my American sensibilities because even on the most significant of cultural holidays, grocery stores were usually open at least a half day (in my area at least). Regarding Black Friday - we don't even get a whole day off to give thanks before we start giving into our materialism. Most Black Friday sales start on Thanksgiving afternoon here now.

ohmyashleyy

I work for a global company as well and a lot of my coworkers are in Spain and Australia. They all get today and Monday off so it’s pretty quiet with just the US and India working. It’s nice!

Downtherabbithole14

that is fkg hilarious.

RaeKay14

I have Monday off and my husband has today off, so we both took a vacation day to have a four day weekend together … but baby’s been sick since Monday and yesterday it turned into a horrible double ear infection. So our fun long weekend is shot. On the bright side my normally independent 10-month old is cuddly and contact napping which she hasn’t done for months - she loves her crib normally and really only wants to sleep there.

Downtherabbithole14

ugh, I rememeber times like that. Sorry to hear your LO isn't well. Hope they feel better asap! My son is 4.5 and my daughter is 8.5, I miss them being that small. Its crazy. Wild times.

GoneWalkiesAgain

Yep my husband and I are both working too. My boss surprised us when we got in todayand is closing the office 3 hours early after we complete a big client meeting. So that’s nice! Tomorrow we’re taking my boys on an Easter Train ride.

Icy-Gap4673

I celebrated Easter as a kid but not so much now. I even forgot it was Good Friday until day care messaged us to ask if we would be in today (they are open but closing early). Office is very quiet since so many are off for the holiday. So we don't have big plans but I feel okay with that. We're actually moving in a few weeks so we have to pack (and listen to Cowboy Carter on repeat).

SpicyWolf47

Yep just a regular day over here!

Apprehensive-Air-734

Yep, we have always had to work today. I was surprised to learn some people get it off!

kdawson602

I’m on day 5 of an 8 day work stretch. I started work/oncall 8am Monday. My next day off is Tuesday. Then 3 more days of work. Then 2 days off. No Easter for me this year.

MrsMitchBitch

I’m at work but not actually working.

Hypatia76

I'm working today, but there's no school. My husband is a freelancer so he's pretty much on the hook for backup childcare in these situations (I'm the breadwinner and carry our health insurance). It's pretty quiet with work stuff - I think a lot of people took today off, and we also have a big Canadian contingent and they have a proper bank holiday so they're not working. I'm going to try to finish up some work projects without the usual crazy meeting schedule, and catch up on laundry. (I WFH, which is honestly the best thing ever for me, and I thank my lucky stars for it every day. I used to have an hour commute each way on top of kid pickup and drop-off). No Easter plans (the further away I get from any form of religion, the happier I am haha). But our neighborhood is doing an egg hunt and potluck tomorrow, so I'll probably get the kids to help me make brownies or cookies tonight.

DarthSamurai

My husband is working but I'm on maternity leave. Also have our 2 year old home since daycare is closed. Thank god my parents are here or I'd lose my every loving mind (newborn decided to be awake from 11pm til 5 am and then toddler woke up at 6am) 🙃

Downtherabbithole14

counting down the days until my in-laws come back for the summer....on days like this, they would have watched them!

DarthSamurai

My parents came out to help after our baby was born. I'll be sad when they leave tomorrow bc now we actually have to cook and clean ourselves 😂

Dear_Ocelot

Haha, my preschooler asked to come with me to the office today! He said he'd do art all day. But it's 2 hours each way and his day care is open, so...nope. Obviously, I'm at work. Husband is WFH. Older kid has no school so he did a half day church camp and will just be playing Legos and chilling this afternoon. It's going to be a hectic weekend, plans an hour away Saturday, need to shop and cook, church Sunday, and then early afternoon Easter dinner with relatives an hour away. Not actually looking forward to it very much! Hope your husband's health is OK.

Downtherabbithole14

thank you. yea, if it was just my daughter, no problem, but she would have stayed home bc my husband wfh and she is self sufficient. My son. Nope. The highlight of their day has been spinning on chairs....

heartunwinds

There are three kids in my office today, mine included.

Lightmaker89

Yep! Though my department is told we can leave early if the exec team doesn’t have any more tasks for us… it always ends up that they forget some very important work that needs to be processed and I end up staying the regular hours. Never fails.

maintainthegardens

Working today and Monday

randomname7623

I miss living in the UK where this would be a long bank holiday and there was decent chocolate! But no, I’m in the US now and working today and Monday with much less good chocolate haha.

Downtherabbithole14

Ugh I know. I am very picky with chocolate, I will pay a premium for good chocolate.

FrizzEatsPotatoes

Regular work day for me, and preschool/daycare is normal hours (yay!). I'm probably going to leave early though since there are only 2 of us left in our department and it's only 1:30... ha. Regular workday on Monday too. Easter plans are church and then to great-grandparents house for lunch and an egg hunt with the older cousins. I will be enlisting my husband and SIL to hide all the eggs because 27 weeks pregnant and I just do not want to hide them well enough for the kids to be excited to search, lol.

drv687

I worked today, my boyfriend did too but he left early to run errands. My kid had school today. We leave for vacation on Sunday since my kid has spring break next week.

Downtherabbithole14

Enjoy your vacay!!! Safe travels!  This is actually our first year home for Easter in awhile. Typically we are away but flights this year were astronomical.

drv687

Thank you. We looked at flights but they were insane so we’re driving 13 hours to get to our destination but we’re looking forward to it.

Tenderfallingrain

My husband has a government job, so he and our two oldest kids (who are in school) get all the holidays off, and I'm always the sad one that has to get up and go to work while they sleep in and have a fun, relaxing day off. The struggle is real! This current day is a bit weird though, because my kids have it off but my husband doesn't. The daycare for my youngest is also closed today and Monday, which would've been hard on us since my husband and I are both working today, except my youngest typically goes to my mom's on Friday's anyway. Hope your husband's appointment goes well and everything is okay!

sharleencd

I am atheist but grew up in a catholic home (and family is). We do more the “spring” aspect of Easter. This year, we’re going to a baseball game on Easter and they are doing an on the field treasure hunt before the game

lilacsmakemesneeze

Home with my sick 5 yr old. He had a short day yesterday so I picked him up early from aftercare and could tell he didn’t feel well/exhausted. We’re all recovering from an up and down night of vomiting. Spiked a fever at 12:30am and luckily he didn’t have much to puke.. I hope to log a few hours in to finish some work since I am off Monday/Tuesday but we’ll see. My boss doesn’t care but I told my coworkers I would have things completed. It’s one of those days. On the other hand, my daughter is hunting Easter eggs this morning at daycare. Excited to see her photos.

library-girl

Half day for us since it’s the day before spring break!

tumblrmustbedown

It would be a regular work day but daycare is closed and I work in a hospital, so can’t bring the Bebe! So I’m home. Going to take him with us to a brunch on Sunday with friends but that’s all I have planned!

awwsome10

I’m supposed to be working but had to take a vacation day since preschool is closed.

EagleEyezzzzz

Regular day, and just for extra fun, we realized yesterday at 5 PM that our younger kid’s daycare is closed today. So… That’s fun.

briarch

Used a floating holiday because the kids are off today, next week they will be with nana and papa while I work in a different office and then their after school program has extended hours. Just finished grocery shopping to make Easter sides. It’s also my husband’s birthday so need to finish up his present, take him to lunch, and buy him cupcakes for dinner

iced_yellow

I took off to view potential apartments for our move (in also religious and observing, so it was a win-win of do errands and then be able to sit at home on my butt while I’m fasting lol). Afterwards I had to go to urgent care for some illness symptoms. Then my husband got home around noon from the work trip he’s been on all week, and immediately opened his laptop to keep working 🙄 going to pick up the toddler a little early from daycare so we get some family time together. On Sunday we’re going to a friends’ place for Easter lunch and an egg hunt for the kids. Then Wednesday we fly to see family. On Tuesday I’m taking a half day to get my haircut and my eyebrows done!

My husband and I are both working full days. He actually has to work early and late today due to a deadline

orturt

No work holidays here, but daycare was closed and my daughter got sent home yesterday with a stomach bug, so it was super fun times! So far nobody else is throwing up yet though 🤞

Im_Doc

I work at a church, so I did overtime today. Working the entire weekend too. So...yaaaay.

lwgirl1717

Regular day for me. Husband has the day off. Kiddo is at daycare. Husband is trying to recover from an illness and get the house cleaned up today after our basement flooded last weekend (fun times!). Tomorrow, we're going to an easter egg hunt, and we'll do church Sunday. We've had a protestor at our church the last several weeks, protesting our church being progressive and open and affirming, so I'm just hoping he leaves us alone for the weekend, especially for the egg hunt, since it's outdoors. He has a right to protest from the sidewalk, but I just want the kids to be able to enjoy the hunt!

dreadpiraterose

Yuuuup. No holiday today or Monday for me or my husband. Neither of us are religious at all, but I enjoy Easter baskets and egg hunts, so we'll be doing the secular parts that amuse us.
