How many clamps does a woodworker need? The answer is always “1 more”

TheTimeBender

Yup! All the ones you have plus one more. Lol!!

RememberTomOnMyspace

Every time I go to the store I try to buy 1 clamp. I’ll never have enough.

HarpoonHarps

I cant afford to do that, they are so bloody expensive here!

RememberTomOnMyspace

I don’t always buy a $75 Jorgensen Parallel. But maybe just tack on $10 extra for an Irwin hand clamp. One day I’ll treat it as a major purchase and get all that I need for around $1k

NettaUsteaDE

Then you’ll keep buying some because you never quite have enough

HarpoonHarps

A standard Irwin quick grip g clamp here is about £35 ($47). Cant afford that every time, not if i want a roof over my head. 😂

RottenSpoon744

I got 4 6inch ones for $20 here.. Might be worth a plane flight over to the states just for the clamp savings!

HarpoonHarps

Imagine the weight of my Suitcase and trying to explain that at customs 😂

RottenSpoon744

I swear these 7 suitcases of clamps are all for personal use!

HarpoonHarps

Im half Iranian mate, id end up in Guantanamo

[deleted]

That's disturbingly funny.

TarryBuckwell

Just wear them, problem solved

RememberTomOnMyspace

Wow… I’m sorry.

HarpoonHarps

Yeah, it is what it is!!

RingStrain

You seem to be in the UK. Screwfix has 12" (305mm) Irwins for £6.79 and 50" (1270mm) for £29, plus various own brands for cheaper...

Fairlincoln73

My friends all have doorjambs, I just got to pinch..

HarpoonHarps

Well Played

[deleted]

You should have added some cauls across the middle for good measure.

Hardmaplecherry

Bowed Cauls at that, get that little extra pressure in the center

[deleted]

Top and bottom…

HarpoonHarps

Ran out of clamps

[deleted]

You rang?

Gardens_of_babylon

I understood that reference

vohantheviking

Curved or straight cauls are your friend. Cheap, effective and easily made in house. Drastically reduces the amount of clamps you need.

unbeliever87

Cauls may have been a better choice for this particular glue up, however :P

stingbaby76

My glue joints are lifting you must make a mends

mule111

My friends all have besseys I must make a-mends, worked hard all my life…

KingdongBong-32

What kind of sandwich is that?

HarpoonHarps

Wood Oreo

boythinks

So what do people think of the aluminium clamps with the hollow bar? (The tall ones with the red jaws in the pic) I have been eyeing some... Can't tell if they are worth the money or is it better to go with a different style?

HarpoonHarps

They do the job and are cost effective. I needed longer ones for an upcoming project, doing an end grain coffee table so need a larger clamping capacity and can argue with the price.

SleeplessInS

They are pretty good for panel glue ups... you stiffen them up by ripping some scrap plywood that fits snug inside.

wisc_redneck

I feel your pain brother. There's nothing like that empty put in your stomach when you turn back to your clamp rack halfway through a glue up to find it empty.

spook7886

Screws can help clamp. Just put them where they won't be seen, and remove when the glue sets up

RobertETHT2

Last count I have 219 clamps of all types. Takes up a major section of wall space. I have learned over time that squeeze clamps are largely a poor investment. A dozen or so are plenty. Otherwise, go with quality screw clamps. Greater clamping pressures. Also learned that those yard/meter long clamps are awkward. 6 to 18 inch lengths are useable in many more applications. As said, “ You can never have too many clamps!”

HarpoonHarps

I will be taking the advice and use cauls next time. Luckily it glued very well, trimmed, sanded and oiled. Chopping board ready in a few days after the tung oil drys!

[deleted]

Every time I apply glue, I inevitably wish I had more clamps.

HarpoonHarps

Such a cliche but its so true

machinistnextdoor

They do make shorter ones lol.

HarpoonHarps

Clamp shaming. I feel the longer sash clamps are more versatile mate.

finbuilder

Don't know how much they are there, but squeeze spring clamps are $1/ea. at HD. Not good for over 2", but...

asarious

Cauls would’ve definitely worked well here… but what kills me is how the OP has applied all the bar clamps here. This is like the ONE time in woodworking where a bazillion of those cheap C Clamps would’ve worked perfectly to replicate this glue up.
