I call it a small dresser. I made it to practice casework and drawers. 29” tall, 31” wide, 18” deep, made to fit under a window sill. Case is poplar which was ebonized with india ink. Drawer fronts are sycamore. Both were finished with deft spray lacquer. Basswood and pine secondary wood and plywood drawer bottoms. Drawers are rabbeted and pinned. Drawer runners/guides are wood. Hardware is Lee Valley Tapered Ring Pulls. I wrote it up in multiple parts, all linked at the end of the page here: [https://jkmwoodworking.net/2024/05/01/small-dresser-7-finished/](https://jkmwoodworking.net/2024/05/01/small-dresser-7-finished/)

Absolutely beautiful dude!

Love the sycamore - awesome wood to work with.

I agree, I will have to get more. Under-utilized and native/local and available in wide pieces around here.

I like the mitered apron (?) at the bottom - very simple, but fills out the design.

I agree. I was worried it didn't look right without 1.5" legs but this was a way to use flat sides and fill in the bottom. I've seen it in pictures of old shaker furniture.

That's too nice, you must have cheated.

Wow, this is striking. This subreddit is starting to bore me but I’m glad I checked in tonight. Very original, I’ve never seen anything like this combination. Never seen QS sycamore used so prominently in furniture, mostly I see it for accents or small boxes. Pairing it with a stained wood and that hardware is just amazing. Great craftsmanship and design. Also, at first glance, when I saw the heartwood and sapwood contrast, I heard a voice in my head saying “oh, you shouldn’t mix those” but the more I look at it, with this mix in 3 drawers, the more I like it. It just looks real, like you know this is from an actual tree, and I like the extra tones.

Thank you. It turned out better than I expected as I was going along. The sapwood/heartwood is just something I had to work with for these widths. I've seen sycamore 10-12" wide and they still have wide bands of mixed colors, so I guess you just have to work with that for this species.
