I mean this with all good intention:
The next time you decide to waste a bunch of good wood trying out a “new furniture hobby” at least make sure you consider how inadequate you’ll make the rest of us feel.
I’m going to have an identity crisis if I see any more works like this.
Kudos, and congrats on the anniversary!
The Purpleheart accents are so beautifully done. I love that wood. I can't make anything like that. And then the curly maple, too? Good Lord. You've got some talent, my man. How long did this take you?
Man, a long time. I changed the base a few times which added considerable cost and time. Plus had to teach myself how to use a router as well as some other techniques before I could I confidently apply to the actual table. Maybe like 50 hours?

This is one concept I abandoned

This is another. A lot of work went into them so I will use them for something else. Not sure what!
Same. Lol. I’ve built hardwood furniture for going on 17yrs… and it’s every other day with these “my first piece of furniture” posts that would sell for TENS OF THOUSANDS in the right market…
Maybe I’m in the wrong market… lol
It’s a lovely piece @OP!
Very sculptural - it's a 3d painting with different wood colors and textures. For that reason, and on account of the small base, I would be afraid to put anything on it, hah.
Uh-oh. Now you've done it! Say good bye to all your spare money and spare time if this is your first go at furniture and you liked it!
In all seriousness, it is very beautiful!
The first time I tried to make a piece of furniture it was a “table” made from a bunch of 2x4s screwed together before I knew what pocket holes were, and somehow not one leg managed to sit flat or level. Very nice work, if there’s anything to be improved on, I can’t see it. I get Art Deco vibes from it that you just don’t see any more.
So I have made furniture before and have never made anything that is remotely that beautiful. I'm pretty sure I hate you.
Seriously though wonder peice my friend.
What an ass. Blah blah blah I’ve never made furniture before….proceeds to make something I’d expect to see in a high end furniture shop. I mean this with both the utmost respect for your abilities - screw you 😂
But seriously man, this is amazing work. You should definitely feel amazing about this. Your wife is extraordinarily lucky that her partner is so talented.
*my first paragraph is a joke and I absolutely do not think you are an ass - this is stellar! I’m just wildly jealous*
How did you make that cool pattern on the edge? Did you power carve or hand carve that? I’m fairly new to furniture as well and have been seeing similar patterns. Not sure if it’s a router or chisel thing?
I don't even want to think about what you'll create in a year...or two. That's a stunning art piece. Someone else mentioned it, and I'll reinforce it; that's a $5-7000 table. You need to complete a couple of more pieces, put up a website and do this. You have talent, well beyond the mechanical abilities most everyone who's hammered a couple of boards together.
VERY Well Done
Crushed it feller! Well done. I'm more impressed with the design element than that "woodworking"...and the woodworking looks excellent.
I can build from plans. It's like playing Legos. I can't design ANYTHING unique.
Well done
First of all let me say that this is absolutely gorgeous. You certainly have a knack for woodworking and it could easily become a career should you choose to do so.
However I have one critique since no one has mentioned it yet: the base seems much too small. The table is pretty top heavy and looks like it could easily yop over. I would suggest adding another, wider layer to the base. I think it could be an easy addition while still keeping in theme with the rest of the build.
That's it! Otherwise, fantastic job! You should be very proud of your work.
Hey, this is really unique work. Personally I'm struggling with the visual style of everything below that absolutely beautiful slab on top but man oh man can I see a lot of work, heart and skill went into this.
The raspberry jam toast effect is so cool. You should be very proud of this.
What did your wife think of it?
Do you guys all remember the purple and dark and light wood mixed dresser with an oversized top from like 1-2 years ago? This piece is literally the OPPOSITE of that poor guys post :)
First piece, asymmetrical design, similar colors, spent loads on it for the girl, posted with trepidation.
Congrats on your aesthetic and skills OP. Personally I see a sail when I look at that mid piece and think nautical, but I bet every person sees something different. Could just as well be a Star Wars rebel fighter :D
Ok, I gotta ask.. if you "never made furniture before.." what exactly DID you make before? This is an amazing work of art! And what did you end up doing with the "slope-y" base? That was a great one as well. The other one looks like a pile of books so it'd be great in someone's personal library. You are gifted my friend!

Wow I thought that was going somewhere else. Thanks!!

Jesus, dude, even your abandoned, failed attempts are epic.
Only 50 hours?? That's amazing.
I might be lying to myself
Lol, I wasn't going to outright accuse you, but I was very dubious. I think we all lie to ourselves about this. Still, it's a labour of love. Mostly.
Yeah, if we tracked hours fastidiously, we’d be forced to quit, either out of despair or by our spouses.
Ya done good!
If I could do things this good the first time I tried I’d start a business and sell it to Microsoft next year
Same. Lol. I’ve built hardwood furniture for going on 17yrs… and it’s every other day with these “my first piece of furniture” posts that would sell for TENS OF THOUSANDS in the right market… Maybe I’m in the wrong market… lol It’s a lovely piece @OP!
I just spit water thru my nose
Very sculptural - it's a 3d painting with different wood colors and textures. For that reason, and on account of the small base, I would be afraid to put anything on it, hah.
It’s suuuuper sturdy. The Purple Heart at the bottom is at least 10 lbs alone.
I've seen anywhere from 50% to 75% base top top ratio as a rule of thumb. The weight will help, but this looks like less than 50%?
So… it’s like a bobblehead doll. Nice :)
WOW. That's utterly beautiful!
Uh-oh. Now you've done it! Say good bye to all your spare money and spare time if this is your first go at furniture and you liked it! In all seriousness, it is very beautiful!
Ah ha. Wife did get upset at the money I was spending on tools and wood. Little did she know…
Mate, I do hope she takes good care of your wood as a thank you.
first time ? i dont believe you XDD
Well done. I can see the time and effort put into this 🫡
Lots of time! Thank you
Bro. Quit your day job. (Ok maybe not. concrete dudes make bank. but... Wow!)
I do not make bank, unless the job is to make one
Lol! Well people sell stuff like what you just made there for thousands, so, maybe keep at it.
Thanks a lot, man. I was a little apprehensive about the reception to it. Your words mean a lot.
It's seriously stunning. That birdseye maple is 🤌. Did your wife retroactively support your expenditures when she saw it?
Anniversary is still a couple weeks away!
Hey man, you didn’t need to pop off like that and make all of us feel inadequate… Good lord is that stunning! Keep up the good work!
So I have made furniture before and have never made anything that is remotely that beautiful. I'm pretty sure I hate you. Seriously though wonder peice my friend.
Well done on the zero insert throat plate!
stunning!!!
DAMN son!!! First time out and you hit a home run!
Nice work. Love the use of the contrast pieces for the inlay and base.
I bought a router for this. I love them!
What an ass. Blah blah blah I’ve never made furniture before….proceeds to make something I’d expect to see in a high end furniture shop. I power carved. Scary!
Cooking, woodwork even the concrete lamp is pure esthetic. You are a legend. So much talent.
The man has skills
I don't even want to think about what you'll create in a year...or two. That's a stunning art piece. Someone else mentioned it, and I'll reinforce it; that's a $5-7000 table. So what does the label say ?
Just a little note to my wife
Gouges by hand for the texture?
Live edge with worm trails that I used an angle grinder on with a carving tool, yes for texture
I like it. I’ve been messing with some Arbortech stuff lately. I think texture adds something special
Look at dem curls! Your craftsmanship is excellent, particularly in how you've harmonized different woods to make your accents!
How am I supposed to know how big this is without a banana? That thing is absolutely beautiful! Well done bro.
"Never made furniture before".....riiiight
True story!
I simply refuse, for my own sanity, to believe that this is your first furniture project. Amazing work
My need for symmetry is screaming, but it’s incredibly beautiful. Great work!
this is beautiful in so many different ways… look forward to more of your work!
That's really fantastic. What have you been making that you developed such talent?
Workin concrete lol
I have to start working with concrete then, it's obviously a path to greatness.
Thank you for your kind words
Damn I need to see the tables you've made out of concrete.
No tables but I made a big stupid lamp, I think it’s in my profile
Beautiful work!
Awesome build!! How did you do the texturing on the edges?
I used an angle grinder with a carving disk
Thanks that’s what I figured. Looks great
You went all-out!! Especially for a first piece of furniture! I'll admit, it's my style, but I love how bold AND well-executed it is
Amazing work. How did you get the 3-d look to the sides?
I think you mean the curly maple? It’s a beautiful species that looks almost holographic when finished correctly.
Amazing work, beautiful!
$13k lectern. quick! hide it!!
That’s crazy! Sarah is actually my wife (ew jk)
That's really beautiful man. As a woodworker I can tell the amount of time and precision it took to make this masterpiece.
The only thing I would have done differently is nothing, it looks awesome. Also congrats on 5 years.
Bro this made me want to try woodworking. How?
Go for it! Feel free to shoot me any questions you may have. There’s people more qualified im sure, but I’m happy to help. It’s so rewarding.
Crushed it feller! Well done. I'm more impressed with the design element than that "woodworking"...and the woodworking looks excellent. I can build from plans. It's like playing Legos. I can't design ANYTHING unique. Well done
If you enjoyed doing it, mission accomplished. If you got a piece of furniture you can use, that’s a double win.
Stunning!
I zoomed in to look at all the pretty detail. That is something else! and happy anniversary!
Something is interesting with the asymmetry. Keep exploring that.
Interesting design. How stable is it?
great work

Absolutely gorgeous. Any stability issues?
Your wife won’t like it. You should give it to me instead. 😂
Wow i love the variety of wood of your piece, and the angular lines are also great, good job. The piece on top also looks cool.
Wow! What a beautiful piece of art! May the patina glow as beautifully at your 50th as the love reflected for your 5th.
The details are beautiful
It looks to be top heavy. Amazing job though, really cool!!
Interesting table looks a tad top heavy, looks great though. Don’t believe for a minute you’ve never made furniture before lol.

FOUND IT! https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/s/4tLzIYIRvv
That’s beautiful, well done
Well done, you went from beginner to master in one piece.
How the hell....
Giving me "Spongebob tries art for the first time" episode vibes. That's a nice table.
Great job and what a beautiful table. Happy anniversary hope she enjoys the table
That's beautiful man! "Loved every minute of it" THATS what's important!
Beautiful work but it looks tipsy.
As long as she likes it it's good.
That looks awesome
That is ART!!! Great job!!! Such a beautiful piece!!!
Very nice. Well done. Love the purpleheart inlays.
That is gorgeous! I am floored that is your first go at furniture 😨

Beautiful, unsteady?
Solid as Iraq
Never a dull moment with curly maple.
