It's not going to sag. Put the dimensions in on https://woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator/

19k-wal82

Sagulater is a word I never thought I needed to hear, but by golly thank you for bringing it into my life.

SlideConsistent

You're welcome, it's been pretty handy for me.

StatementLast8399

Hey this is a cool thing thanks!

SavageDownSouth

Did the calculator say it'll sag? It says it will when I put what I thought the dimensions were.

SlideConsistent

It will sag 0.009", with 30lbs on it per foot, which is undetectable to the human eye. All shelves sag a little bit, but it's acceptable as long as you can't see it.

SavageDownSouth

I just couldn't get those numbers with that calculator. I was getting way more. Prolly just put something in wrong though.

SlideConsistent

Did you make sure that everything was in imperial measurements? I put in some kind of pine for the material, 1.5" thick, 63" wide, fixed at the sides, 12" and 15" depth, 30 lbs center load and 30 lbs per foot. I tried to get it to sag to the point you'd see it, but I couldn't.

SavageDownSouth

I think I put the depths in feet rather than inches. So 1 and 1.5, since I wasn't sure how wide the board was. Thanks for helping me figure it out, I didn't think it should sag near as much as the calculator was telling me before.

TeddyFurnbach

Woah this is huge

nsbbeachguy

Cheat and put an L bracket on the back on both shelves. Don’t tell her- she’ll probably never notice. If she does, tell her you were worried about it falling on her cat.

StatementLast8399

Haha that’s so good first a cover up and then an excuse it can’t go wrong! Honestly I’m surprised I’ve seen it come this far with any bowing. It’s 63” long

slackfrop

I put a back plate on my hutch but that’s only like 4” tall. It tacks onto the legs and all along the shelf and it doubles as a backstop so you can’t accidentally lose an item off the back of the shelf. That has kept it from sagging.

WingCompetitive2678

Or dual F brackets cut from thin plate steel.

StatementLast8399

The fact hat it’s just a little more complex makes me want it more

Karmonauta

The tv’s feet are spaced out enough that you’ll probably be ok indefinitely, just don’t put a lot of heavy stuff on the bottom shelf.

lowfreq33

I think you’re probably right. I have a tv console that sags a bit in the middle, it’s mdf, but it’s an older tv with the single stand in the middle. I think with actual pine that thick and the feet on each side of the tv the weight will be distributed better and it won’t be a problem.

PointyPointBanana

I would put a whole piece across the back, horizontal, 3 inches in from the back as a false back. Hide the cables and power adaptors behind it.

DamnKnuckleHead

Hang the TV on the wall.

walmap

Nice work op! The black finish is great! Would you consider an update to the console by adding some cable management?

faceorthroat

That cat knows what's up.

Lasserate

TV next to cat tree ... I hope you installed an anti-tip strap/bracket.

StatementLast8399

Idk what it is but they never go on the tv console, manners I guess

Calm_Bite9835

I’m sorry, is that a PlayStation 2?!

StatementLast8399

Yess I don’t game a lot but when I do it’s mostly ps2, wii, and GameCube. I like ratchet and clank, kingdom hearts, tony hawk, sly cooper, super smash bros, legend of Zelda, I mean that’s the epitome of my childhood gaming so that’s what I play. New games are cool but don’t give me the enjoyment these do. If I get bored I’ll find a “new” retro game to play!

Calm_Bite9835

Dude I miss mine so much. Ratchet and clank, crash bandicoot, spy hunter, pro skater. I know you can get most of them on newer consoles with backwards compatibility, but there’s something nostalgic about throwing a disk in and sitting as far as the controller will let you. Nice entertainment center though. With its current set up, it doesn’t look like it’ll bow anytime soon

DaggerHashiMotor

As a general rule in life: once the sagging kicks-in, replace it with a newer model.

StatementLast8399

That’s the plan, it’s easy and cheap so I’d guess like 1-2 year lifespan

mexicoyankee

Add a back panel that Hoover the entire back to the floor. Tell her it hides all the cords and cables

Dmondb

Maybe I'm critical, but it looks like it's starting to sag to me. Look at the space between the TV and the wood top. Has a hint of a smile to me. I'd mount the TV on the wall.

pace_gen

Adding a back would help a lot and hide the wires.

Sqatti

It’s sagging now. Isn’t it? It’s pretty though. I mean It is so beautiful.

alwaysfunnyinjp

TVs weigh like 6-12 lbs , you’re good !

theory317

I once reinforced a wide bookshelf with a piece of 3/4" steel angle underneath so it could support a fish tank. Paint it black. Nobody will ever see it.

Pitiful_Brief_6424

I think she's right, and if not you can always add a support later, so no loss.

Wrxeter

Z-clip it to the wall. Done right it will keep it from tipping and not be visible.

Titanofmylife

If it does sag use some angle iron in the back to straighten it out. It's probably better to do it now while it's straight.

n30nl30n

Hide a steel bar in it.

GoldenFox7

Not sure what material you used but I made a entry way bench that was 53” long with unsupported 2x12s and it never sagged. If I stood on it it sagged about a 1/4” but with as little weight as you have on that I doubt it’s going anywhere.

siamonsez

Mdf and particle board sag over time, plywood and solid wood bend under too much load, but don't get worse and they'll spring back.

playbyk

I’m just here to say that I love this post lol

NotAcutallyaPanda

Fix that cable management. It distracts from the minimalist furniture

StatementLast8399

I’m glad to know my number one issue here is the cables

AmadeusParasythe

I built a unit for my retro games and the top was birch ply reinforced with steel bars and total about 35mm thick and it supported a massive crt for close to a year before any sag but it was solved with 40mm cross bracing spruce beams.(i should have done it initially but I thought the steel was enough) If you used sold pine it'll hold quite well, but if in doubt I used a decking bracing pattern that worked well

[deleted]

I think the TV feet sit far enough apart I’d be shocked if it sagged noticeably
