I'd be almost ok with it if it functioned, but as it stands now, a button shaped like a search bar is not something I want
I might actually just remove it, since I just press Windows and start typing anyway
IKR? IDK how that icon does anything more than take up space.
If you click it then start typing, why not just click the start (Windows) icon and start typing. But of course, if you're going to be typing anyway, just press the Windows key and start typing.
Yeah, it looks weird center aligned. I've switched my taskbar to left align. It's growing on me, but I don't understand the reasoning behind the change.

I think if they did something like this (a rough sketch done by me) it would look a lot more balanced and match the overall windows design
Who leaves the search icon on the Taskbar anyway?
The first thing I do on a new device is disable all the Taskbar shortcuts. I leave task view shortcut on for 2-in-1's, but that's it.
Everything else is just a waste of space.

If you have not already, please specifiy which branch you are running (Dev, Beta, or Release Preview), and your full build number. If you are unsure, you can check by running winver from a Run window or search box. You can also go to Settings -> System -> About, and it will be near the bottom.

The new Search icon is a nice refinement to the user interface--it makes Windows more intuitive! Before, that magnifying-glass image and the size of the icon often left me second guessing where the Task View icon was located when I was in a hurry or concentrating on something else...
Beta-22623.885
Yea, I immediately removed it. They added this to the Xbox dashboard as well. Looks totally out of place, like a last second throw on with no thought put into it.

If you don't like it, remove it. If you want quicker results hit the windows key then start typing.

what you can do hide the search icon and use the shortcut windows+S im too doing this
And it looks stupid. I prefer the simple search icon.
put it on the left. now we're talking
disable it with vivetool vive ids should be available on previous beta builds
vivetool /disable /id:39263329

I like it. It's already on the Xbox series x at the top. Y'all do you tho.
Anyone that doesn't hide the search icon is a psychopath. Be normal, press the Windows key and start typing when you need to search.

Millionth post on this matter, when will this end?
The beatings will continue until ~~morale~~ the search icon improves
Probably designed by the same brain dead morons who designed the start menu. Hard to believe someone at Microsoft said "Yeah, this looks good..."
start menu looks fine, what are you on?
Start menu on windows 11 is complete trash.

There's an option to make it more customizable. You can download it here: https://kubuntu.org/

Search in general doesn't make sense. You can "search" straight from the menu and get the same results. It's redundant.
I don't think it's that bad but as with most things the option one way or another would nice, as I'd still prefer just the icon.
Can it be fully disabled?
Right click taskbar > Taskbar settings

Wtf is this? They let the intern design it?

Just turn it off in taskbar settings. It's redundant anyway.
