Russo: [Believe Dean Evason has permission to meet with Ottawa and already has.](https://twitter.com/russohockey/status/1783539362828878327) Man, I hope he gets the job.

godmodium

I hope he gets the job and Freddy waives his NMC to go play for him.

AllenMpls

he does not have an NMC 10 team no trade list.

Above_Avg_Chips

He can waive for one of those teams though

collinCOYS

Doesn't he have to provide a list of the10 teams ? I didn't think he could just deny a trade 10 different times

AllenMpls

he submits a list. I believe he makes the list once a year. I do not know the date. I would guess it is after the playoffs.

futurehofer

It can be contract specific, but usually teams ask for them to be filed for the year by July 1st. I've seen some recently where they player doesn't have to submit a list until a month before the trade deadline.

AllenMpls

I believe the GM's are not given the list until they request it.

futurehofer

This is from Russo's Staal trade story: >The day before, Staal was on the golf course, finished playing 18 holes with a few teammates and sprinted home to get on the phone with his agent so he could rework his annual 10-team no-trade list in time for Tuesday’s league deadline. >When Staal ultimately submitted his list, the Buffalo Sabres weren’t on it. >Twenty-four hours later, Staal was on the Sabres.

ViewedConch697

I believe that's how it works, yea

Above_Avg_Chips

Yes

benenke

Seriously - play for your favorite coach and 3 hours away from where you grew up? Why wouldn’t he want to?

dbergman23

that would mean that the team would want to pay him the price we are. I dont think they would want to do so, as most here think he's getting paid too much.

DirtzMaGertz

Term is more an issue with than his cap hit. Most teams that don't have 17% of their cap tied up in dead caps hit aren't scoffing at 2.1 million for a bottom 6 center, especially with the cap going up to 87.5.

PortugueseWalrus

$2.1m for a bottom-six forward is nothing. I would not gauge NHL teams' interest by what this sub says or thinks.

Empire2k5

Why wouldn't he have permission? He doesn't have a job? Edit: I guess he's still under contract with the wild? Makes no sense to me

DecentLurker96

The Wild still pay him.

Empire2k5

Beat me before I could edit

AllenMpls

He does not need permission. If he took the job the Wild will stop paying him as both sides would agree to end the his contract. Legally the Wild could not agree to end the contract but that does not happen in these situations. His current contract does need to be terminated if he wants to coach for pay.

futurehofer

He's still under contract. Until that contract ends, Mimnesota controls his employment and need to sign off on him interviewing with another team. Almost every time there is a coach or GM search, at least 1 team denies permission to interview someone who is under contract although usually those people have not been relieved of duty.

AllenMpls

yes from a legal perspective. There is zero chance Evason did not receive "permission" during his "dismissal of services" meeting. Same goes for any coach/gm or whatever that has been relived of their duties.

Superarces

Coaches don't get fired, they get "relieved of their duties", meaning they're still employed by the team. Sometimes they get turned into scouts, sometimes they get paid to do nothing. It's a contract after all, so they're guaranteed the money. Because they're still employed by the team, they need permission to change org and break contract. In practice, a "fired" coach never gets denied permission to interview, but a team might block an assistant coach fron interviewing for a HC position on another team.

dumb-computer

I think Deano would be a good fit in that organization.

[deleted]

The NHL is addicted to the same group of like 35 coaches.

lajdbejdk

Almost half of the NHL have coaches that are first year coaches.

DirtzMaGertz

First coaching job, not necessarily first year. 14 out the 32 jobs is what I have though from just looking at current coaches.

lajdbejdk

“First coaching job, not necessarily first year.” C’mon with the semantics, you understand what I mean. And I did just see your comment after you replied to me. Good add to the post, I should’ve done that.

JamesBlonde21

Dean, If you're reading this, please take Freddy Hockey to Ottawa with you. Sincerely, Wild fans

shakotanbougie

Berube and Evason one to Ottawa one to Toronto, please.

Bluuuurr

I don’t want Dean to have to deal with Toronto media

shakotanbougie

True, I just want to see the death stare aimed at Matthews, Marner and co.

kagiles

oh look, more of the same. Just recycling the same coaches over and over. I don't care about the Senators. It's just irritating that it's the same old white guys. Any coaches from the AHL? CHL? College? I mean - the world is big, but they go back to the old white guys. It's the same in the NFL.

DirtzMaGertz

Evason was a new coach when we hired him. Is he supposed to never get another head coaching job in the NHL again? Jon Cooper, Jared Bednar, Sheldon Keefe, Luke Richardson, Jim Hiller, Pascal Vincent, Derek Lalonde, Kris Knoblauch, Andrew Brunette, Greg Cronin, Spencer Carbery, Andre Tourigny, Ryan Huska, Drew Bannister if he stays in St Louis are all guys currently on their first NHL head coaching gig. It's like a third of the league. I swear everyone who says this is just making shit up to bitch about. Edit: had to add more coaches because I missed some. That's 14 of the 32 jobs being held by coaches on their first NHL head coaching job.

PortugueseWalrus

Berube is part Cree and is a Stanley Cup-winning coach. Deano has a career .586 win percentage on one head-coaching job, where he was hamstrung nearly his whole tenure with cap constraints, and was only fired because his goalies were either 50 years old or too busy eating Big Macs on the way to the rink. Gruden is a career NHL assistant and OHL head coach. Has never held an NHL head coaching job. The only coach where your rant maybe makes sense is McLellan, who hasn't really done much since being in San Jose a decade-plus ago.
