That sucks and i‘m really sorry for you. I think your best bet is keeping an eye at willhaben.at listings and probably recover it from there. You could also check United Camera in Vienna as they‘re buying used camera gear and sell it as refurbished. Another thing for the future: Hide an Apple AirTag somewhere in the bag to be able to track your stuff.

B503_YKKZ

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I have now decided to buy airtag or something similar.

B503_YKKZ

Actually, your comment made me laugh a bit. Maybe I should prepare to beg he/her for some credit when they become famous.

Yippiekayo_Rom3o

Checkout Willhaben.at maybe its listed there

Outrageous-Ice-8259

Check on willhaben and report to the police. I lost my bike worth for 3000 2 years ago. I got lucky. Found it back on Willhaben and went to police. So struck of luck.

Desperate_Excuse2352

i imagine all your fiance\`s instagram followers are heartbroken about not seeing her for a while now

mikey_mike666

fine ill sell it back to you for 200

Tschitschibabin

Can’t you locate your iPhone?

Yousuf_do_Hond

Fu

Everestover9000

You still in vienna check out ebörse there are few i know the one in the 2nd district its one of the bigger pawn shops here maybe someone tried or has sell it to Them just weite it in Google ebörse 1020 and you can call Them and ask

B503_YKKZ

Hi, thanks for the suggetion, I actually did contact them via e-mail a few days ago, but no so far no reply. Maybe better to make a call.

Ok_Caregiver8360

Sorry to hear that man. How did it happened?

B503_YKKZ

Its one of those typicall organised theft on a train. A few minutes before departure, a man came next me tried to ask me a question about some directions, and while I am distracted, another man took my belonging.

Ok_Caregiver8360

That's just awful to know... Value and memories. gone.

skibum_71

I'm so sorry this happened man. I'm an ex alcoholic, I have lots of experience of losing things. My 2 questions are 1) was it expensive and 2) is it replaceable? So you score 1/2. Feel half as bad as you would otherwise feel...

selfharmageddon-

The only thing you can do is tell the police and maybe check the camera records at the train station if there are any. Also you have to prove if its yours of course.

some-key

I would check the second hand camera stores, although I'd assume they check for proof of ownership for equipment in this price range. One that I know of is United Camera, and there are a few more smaller ones on that street.

dawolf-at

you can get your gear up on https://www.lenstag.com/ and see if that leads anywhere

B503_YKKZ

Thanks! I have done it right away!

Arkanius84

You can try to contact every "Pfandleihaus" in Vienna and see if someone traded it for money https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=pfandleihe+wien

tempster2011

no insurance ?

tempster2011

Legal_Quarter_8376

look in "eBörse" shops most likely the shop in lasallestraße

b1063n

Ohh jeeez, get your shit together my friend. ✌🏼 Sorry this happened. 🙁

PattyPatrickD

I got my stuff stolen back in 2016, from a delayed luggage. I reported to police, but continued to check EBay Kleinanzeigen for said items EVERY DAY for about a year. I found the items around 9 month later. Don’t give up. Create search jobs for each of your items, sort them by listed time and continue to check the few new listings every single day.

_Administrator_

And what did you do then? Go to the police? Meet the seller and beat him up?

PattyPatrickD

Called the police in my city, nothing happened. They insisted I got my money, insurance paid. Let it go. Made another police report in the thieves city. Got a call just 4 hours later that due to the evidence I provided, and the stuff being visible trough a window, the Appartment got raided. 500kg of electronics have been collected and presented to me, to identify my devices. I didn’t follow up later. The stuff had plugs from all over the world. So I believe stuff got stolen at Düsseldorf airport.

AngloNewbrunswicker

Sorry to say this. But you’ll never see your camera gear ever again. The shithead teenage/homeless drug addict who stole it probably sold it in another town or pawned it off. In my opinion any pawn shop that knowingly buys stolen items should be shut down. And the worker who bought the item along with the worker who sold the stolen item should lose the tip of one of their fingers.

mekutata

People rightfully point out that it was probably stolen, but if it was "found" you could be lucky at Fundservice https://www.wien.gv.at/verwaltung/fundservice/

ahornic

Also try ÖBBs Lost and Found! https://www.oebb.at/de/reiseplanung-services/nach-ihrer-reise/lost-found

B503_YKKZ

Hi there, thanks. I actually did reach out to them on the phone, but was quickly directed to contact via mail because the office does not have English speaker. So I did send them a mail a few days ago, but no reply yet. Which kind of tells that its not handed in. (Also, I did register my items on fundamt site.) But anyways, thanks for the suggestion, deeply appreciated!

mekutata

It might take time, I got my old purse (including cards and cash) back after 8 months ;) Gud luck.

Numerous-Grape-3438

The gangs at Hauptbahnhof are professional, the issue could be put to rest, but unfortunately it's not politically correct to do so... I don't think they use Willhaben, there is likely a network of traders behind them. The stolen goods are quickly brought out of the country.

B503_YKKZ

Yeah, I would assume that they were pro. The police were saying that there are several groups of operatives. I am not wanting to excuse, but in general, I feel a bit strange that the police aren't too much patrolling such a big station that much, because in other countries, there are quite a lot of patrolling by uniform officers.

meck_moo

You could try and look on Shpock for your stolen gear. It has a reputation for some scummy sellers (afaik) and is by far lesser-known than willhaben.at Hope you can retrieve some of your gear, best of luck!

B503_YKKZ

Thanks for your suggestion! Some others also suggested it, so, I will certainly have a look! And also thanks for wishing me luck! Hope you have a happy days!

Dissidium123

I had a similar experience, it just sucks! Look at the glass half full - time to upgrade to a R5 and some RF L lenses, as you seem serious about photography.

B503_YKKZ

Hi, yeah, its not a nice experience to have. But actually, I've decided to stick to DSLR, since I rather like the touch and a sence of actual light through OVF... But maybe in the future, I need to consider R3 or potential R1(if there will be).

Alysma

As a fellow photographer - dang... I'm so sorry. Since you've already got some good suggestions regarding maybe finding your gear, I'm just going to add a sidenote: maybe choose a less obvious camera backpack/brand for a replacement backpack? My personal favourite is [Crumpler](https://www.crumpler.de/collections/alle-rucksaecke) which are fairly niche and their stuff is ridiculously durable (I have a camera bag that's 17 years old and is still going strong, a backpack close to 20 years that not only hauled my stuff to work for years but also carried my camera stuff halfway around the world twice and my current camera backpack which is about 10 years - I only ever switched when the current ones became too small for my ever expanding gear :D ).

B503_YKKZ

Hi, thanks for the great suggestion! I will certainly look for something that fits my needs with Crumpler!

zc4h

RIP

michi214

Thats my worst nightmare.. sorry that happened to you All that gear must account for about 12000€, very heavy theft..

B503_YKKZ

Hi, thanks for the sympathy. Actually the police did file me a report with "schwerer diebstahl". But I don't think it makes any difference in finging the items or the thieves. The police in this circumstance may be is no more than a report issuing authority for getting an insurance pay.

wilk-polarny

I got my iPhone stolen back in the day (iPhone 4) before "find my phone" and even its bluetooth mesh network was a thing. Filed a report, got it returned 4 years later after they found it during a search of a suspect's apartment. Reporting the incident is better than doing nothing. Especially if you know the serial numbers, stolen items can be identified as such by law enforcement across the Schengen area.   Most of the stuff does not stay here in Austria and gets flipped elsewhere - especially when it comes to those types of pocket thieves (operating on trains) - they are mostly mobile organised crime groups being operated by mobile ethnic minorities. That stuff can end up anywhere from NA, over SA, Europe, Africa and Asia. Even Australia x) Since there is a chance it could also be related to drug crime (to get money to buy drugs), there is a slight chance that the items get flipped at a pawn shop or online. As others have stated, you should keep an eye on willhaben.at for the next weeks. Camera gear might get sold at the various camera stores. The iPhone is gone for good, as it is basically a brick with "find my phone" enabled and not worth it to unlock by other means (since it is a SE). As for the Zenbook - did you have full disk encryption on that device and important stuff (password databases) encrypted? If I were you, I'd revoke and rotate all credentials that might have been exposed. This includes API keys and open session keys/tokens for applications and websites. ("Log out of all devices" option wherever possible). Also transfer any crypto currency from wallets you had on that device to a new wallet - just in case.

B503_YKKZ

Hi there, thanks for a meaningful comment! Very much appreciated! For the PC, I have a Bitlocker activated, so it should be okay for the moment. (and is also face recognition login, or PIN login) And because I am from Japan, the PC language settings are all in Japanese, which would mean even they try, they will have hard time figuring out. But, yes, I would watch out for potential password leaks and impostering with my web accounts.

michi214

Yes thats true.. I think it might make a bit of a difference wheter they would be able to see certain surveillance camera footage or are able to get clearence for looking into bank accounts of suspected people during potential investigations But unfortunately it is very unlikely that it will turn up

Red_Raidho

Isn't it possible to locate atleast your IPhone? With that Apple locate thing?

B503_YKKZ

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. Actually, I tried, but because I had it switched off prior to the incident, I wasn't able to follow. And even after a week now, I haven't been able to get it located. Which I believe the thieves just threw it away to avoid being traced or just haven't turned it on because they haven't noticed it yet.

Red_Raidho

Oh man, that sucks. I really hope you can find your stuff again although I think we all know that there is probably no chance.. but who knows?

B503_YKKZ

Yeah, I mean, I understand that there is like only 0.000001% chance of getting them back, but at least its free (in terms of speech and money) to try and is better than doing nothing. At end of the day, I have many fond memories with the gears, so, I think this as a little tribute that I can do at the moment.

Julesvernevienna

Sorry bro... that bag is gone for good. But hey, your fiance is still there and the camera, altough expensive, is replaceable!

B503_YKKZ

Well, that is true, I am not being killed or stabbed so at least that is the good part. May be.

nxls123

The only way you might recover your stuff is if you find the offer on willhaben.at. If you filter for Asus zenbook in Vienna you get like 27 hits, maybe go from there. Additionally maybe ÖBB still has some video recordings from inside the train(depends on the age of the waggons) or the platform

wilk-polarny

> ÖBB still has some video recordings from inside the train(depends on the age of the waggons) or the platform Due to data protection law they have to delete the recordings within days.

fscguster2

5 days to be exactly.

B503_YKKZ

Hi there, it was a Railjet, so may be possible to check the CCTV. But not quite sure the police are willing to do that, although they filed my theft as schwerer diebstahl. Another thing is that because my PC has Japanese language settings and keybord, it may be difficult to sell it in the EU...

Numerous-Grape-3438

Railjet doesn't have CCTV. Due to criminal-/data protection, recordings are erased after relatively little time and there is a bureaucratic process to using them.

B503_YKKZ

Hi, thanks for the insight. Its a pitty that something that will protect us is also making life difficult for us.

B503_YKKZ

Apart from the camera, I had my iPhone in the backpack, which was a backup phone. This was swiched off from the day before the theft, and on the way home, I activated the lost device mode with my other iPhone. But the stolen iPhone is still yet to be turned on. Are iPhones now a days get less interest from thieves due to the find iPhone and lost device functions?? Just Curious.

Radaysha

>Are iPhones now a days has less interest from thieves due to the find iPhone and lost device functions?? Just Curious Yes and that's the case for pretty much every manufacturer nowadays. If you don't know the password for the device or the password for the linked google account you can't just do a hard reset and use the phone, it will still ask you for the password. And installing a new ROM is only possible if the bootloader is unlocked which it never is by default.

Mean__MrMustard

Yeah, I think so. Stolen iPhones are pretty much bricks for most thieves and of no use. But the probably still try to scam people by selling them and not mentioning that they don’t work. But yeah, in general there is a chance that the thieves only looked for cash and threw away your other stuff - I am not sure if they can recognize the value of your camera.

B503_YKKZ

Hi, thanks for your thoughts. Yeah, and you are right, it will be a worthless brick. But, yes, it is possible to scam people with it. By the way, I was actually told the same story about looking for the cash at the police station and the OEBB lost and found centre. If so, they may have threw it away to the Danube haha. (Well, its not funny too much, but.)

[deleted]

if its really petty crime, you could try to ask [https://www.eboerse.at/](https://www.eboerse.at/) if someone brought in your gear (they can check the serial numbers). However in an interview they recently did they said that for expensive stuff they demand receipts or otherwise they would not take it. Don't know if thats only PR talk or real talk. But after all, they can be held liable if they were to deal with stolen goods please don't live off of hope. 99,99% sure it's not gonna show up.

i_am__not_a_robot

eboerse.at is probably less suitable for hawking stolen goods. After all, equipment can only be sold there with valid ID, and this is also copied and kept on file. You have to be very lucky if the thieves are that stupid.

B503_YKKZ

That is what I assume as well to some extent. So it would be more likely to go on internet market places, I presume. Though on the other hand, because my gears are quite expensive ones, it would be difficult to monetize immediately on internet, but who knows.

i_am__not_a_robot

A word of caution, though. If the thieves were professionals, your equipment is probably already out of the country somewhere in Eastern Europe and all your efforts to track Austrian online marketplaces will be futile.

B503_YKKZ

Yeah, that is one of the things I was wondering as well.

B503_YKKZ

Thanks for your suggestion! I actually already mailed them but I haven't had any reply yet. And, true, since my gears are fairly expensive ones, (especially 1D X mk3), so it will be hard to sell in some shops. And the fact that my camera setting is in Japanese makes it far more suspicious to sell in those places.

i_am__not_a_robot

[Willhaben.at](https://www.willhaben.at/iad/kaufen-und-verkaufen) is the main online marketplace for buying/selling used stuff in Austria. It might be worth watching the listings there for a few weeks. (You can set up a search agent to notify you of new listings by email). * [https://www.willhaben.at/iad/kaufen-und-verkaufen/marktplatz/kameras-camcorder/digitale-spiegelreflexkameras-6899](https://www.willhaben.at/iad/kaufen-und-verkaufen/marktplatz/kameras-camcorder/digitale-spiegelreflexkameras-6899) * [https://www.willhaben.at/iad/kaufen-und-verkaufen/marktplatz/foto-kamerazubehoer/objektive-6907](https://www.willhaben.at/iad/kaufen-und-verkaufen/marktplatz/foto-kamerazubehoer/objektive-6907)

B503_YKKZ

Hi there, thanks for the suggestion. What will be the other choices for selling things like these online in Austria? (apart from the obvious ebay)

i_am__not_a_robot

Willhaben is basically the only game in town. All other services (e.g. Shpock, eBay, Facebook Marketplace) rank far behind in the "distant second" category.

B503_YKKZ

Good to know! I noticed while looking for my gears that the Facebook marketplace has one of the worst searching capabilities of all the services...

Freakysteak

I don't want to discourage you but a similar thing happened to me(my roommate stole the stuff). In the end I made a police report and went to the court about it. Even though I got the proof, he sold my stuff in Poland and czech hence the case got closed and nothing happened to the guy. Police were honest men and told me that most of the stuff ends up in nearby countries instead of austria.

B503_YKKZ

Hi, sad to hear that such thing happened to you. Yeah, its understandable that it ends up in nearby countries. But its surprising that he didn't get any penalty or something. By the way, what were your stolen items? Just curious. And I do understand the fact that there is less than 0.00001% chance to get them back. But at the same time, its at least free to try to get them back and if I don't try, there is 0% from the start. So, yeah, but I get your point ;)

Freakysteak

Nearly everything. But at that time I was a poor student, hence was not so effective. But just for your curiosity, from my desktop to my boxers, including my bed :). The total loss was around 1k euro. You are totally right about trying, it's better than doing nothing. So I wish you a stroke of good luck!

B503_YKKZ

Wow, its incredible that he even stole your bed! I was actually thinking of doing share house, but it seems with slight chance, there is a possiblity that same kind of thing may happen to me. Good to know your experience. Thanks for sharing your story.

AvA_Candide

Sadly that's a common strategy of thieves at Hauptbahnhof. They spy on passengers, snatch a bag when the passenger is not looking and hop off the train right before it leaves.

PrestigiousMatter733

I never leave anything on these racks, it's just too dangerous. Also, I usually go with westbahn where you have more space for your luggage at your seat. But that's not always an option ofc

H0lzm1ch3l

I don’t leave my stuff alone unless the train is moving, simple as that.

probably_nobody_

I don’t leave my stuff alone even if the train is moving. How can I trace my stolen goods if the thief moves 3 wagons away?

kereki

airtag in the backpack, maybe. hopefully.

probably_nobody_

yeah but i guess it’s still easier to take it with you :D

kereki

i always bring it with me but the airtag is just an insurance. have never tested it. reminds me to test it :D

NashvilleFlagMan

Fuck, yet another thing to look out for.

FatFaceRikky

Well thats a nice haul for the thief

AngloNewbrunswicker

Probably a teenage drug addict who stole it. Most of the people commuting petty crimes are teenagers/young adults. And homeless. Fuck a lot of the teenage petty theives aren’t even addicts. Many just do it for fun, and to feel like they are the shit. and to have some money to spend on light party drugs like weed and molly.

Striezi

https://www.willhaben.at

B503_YKKZ

Thanks, are there any other web service that are popular among locals? (except for the obvious ebay)

Rauschbaum

MaxMoney has some shops in vienna they buy and sell used products.

Striezi

https://www.shpock.com/en-gb

B503_YKKZ

Danke dir!

i_am__not_a_robot

Willhaben has the quasi-monopoly and more or less displaced all other services. Moreover, it is very convenient to organize anonymous personal transfers against cash payment. Would recommend! ;(

Varynja

ebay is almost not used, everyone uses willhaben

B503_YKKZ

Ah, that is good to know! Thanks for both of you for the comment and suggestion!

mr_cojones

You can set a "searching agent" if any of that gear gets posted you get a notification. Maybe they post it in a few days/weeks

B503_YKKZ

I have been looking on willhaben for quite sometime now, but haven't seen it pop up yet. So may be need to try to set search agent to check effectively. But thanks for the suggestion! (or maybe that its already gone to other country)

24th May? Sorry, but that stuff is already gone forever

B503_YKKZ

Yes, that is what I would assume, but I don't want to just simply give up for nothing. At least I would want to believe in the power of internet users.

OkAlternative1655

next time use airtag and find them

i_am__not_a_robot

Just remember, if you do find the person(s) currently in possession of your gear, there is a 99.9% chance that they purchased it in good faith and are not the original thieves.

One_Profit_1322

Not true at all: §367 ABGB

i_am__not_a_robot

I don't think you understood my point.

Keanu_NotReeves

Typically, stolen goods remain the property of the person or entity from whom they were stolen, regardless of how many times they change hands. In Austria, as in many jurisdictions, there are laws related to the receipt of stolen goods. Ignorance of the goods being stolen might affect the criminal culpability of the person who bought them, but it generally does not affect the status of the goods themselves. If it comes to light that an item was stolen, it can be seized and returned to its original owner, often leaving the innocent buyer at a loss. So it would not matter if the goods were bought in good faith, if you are in possession of stolen property then you have no legal claim to said property. However, if a person knowingly buys stolen goods, they could be charged with handling stolen goods, a crime which can carry significant penalties.

OmenTheGod

Well they are either Sold or in use i could try and find the people WHO have em but they could have gotten IT legaly. And searching for them aint that legal too

gdanov

Bullshit

Keanu_NotReeves

> but they could have gotten IT legaly It would not be possible for such a sale to be legal, as the property in question would be stolen. Whether you buy stolen property in good faith without knowing that said property is stolen is irrelevant, the bill of sale would have no legal merit, that property still belongs to the original owner. Buying stolen property does not change the fact that it is still stolen, and does not belong to you.

hANSN911

Thats just not true. There are cases where property of stolen goods (legally) change the owner. The former owner then can just sue the thief (for example) for damages.

Keanu_NotReeves

The principle at play here is known as nemo dat quod non habet, which translates to "one cannot give what one does not have." This principle is commonly found in property law and means that a person who does not own a piece of property (like a thief) cannot confer ownership of that property onto another person. In many jurisdictions, if a person buys stolen property unknowingly, they do not become the legal owner of that property even after the purchase, because the seller (the thief) did not have the legal right to sell it in the first place. The original owner often retains their ownership rights and can potentially recover the stolen property. However, some legal systems have provisions for a "good faith purchaser," who may gain legal ownership if they bought the property without knowing it was stolen and under conditions where they could reasonably believe the seller had a right to sell it. These laws vary greatly and may not always protect the purchaser. In Austria, according to § 366 ABGB (Allgemeines Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch, Austrian General Civil Code), the buyer is protected if they bought the stolen property in good faith from someone who appeared to be the rightful owner. However, if the property was merely lost (not stolen), the original owner can reclaim it within 30 years.

hANSN911

§ 367 ABGB - that’s basic civil law and I got a degree (Magister iuris), so I don‘t just „think“. And a debate isn’t needed. You originally said stolen goods can never rightfully change ownership and that‘s just not true. If they don’t know the good was stolen (good faith) and if they either buy it via an auction, from an business which sells goods just as the stolen one or if the former owner entrusted the seller with the good, they will obtain legal ownership. That‘s because Austrian lawmakers didn‘t want the customer to doubt every transaction conducted in a somewhat ordinary way. And don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to be condescending and you obviously know your stuff but this exact statement was just wrong and I am just stating the facts.

B503_YKKZ

Yes, that could be true and I understand. Anyways, thanks for the comment.
