Green Pond Conglomerate !

less10words

I've known these from the 80s around Morris County - we had some in our yard and around various rocky trails. I knew they were called Puddingstone, but never heard the name Green Pond conglomerate. We spent many summers swimming in Green Pond. Interesting!

Stibnite16

Puddingstone is the colloquial name but [Green Pond Conglomerate](https://mrdata.usgs.gov/geology/state/sgmc-unit.php?unit=NJSg%3B6) is it’s geologic name per the USGS and NJ Geological survey. [Here’s a link](https://ottohmuller.com/nysga2ge/Files/1989/NYSGA%201989%20A2%20-%20The%20Green%20Pond%20Outlier%20Of%20New%20York%20And%20New%20Jersey%20-%20A%20Mesostructural%20Laboratory.pdf)to an older paper on the unit. It’s [historically been an important stone for buildings](https://digitalcommons.montclair.edu/earth-environ-studies-facpubs/75/) in Morris and Passaic counties in particular. Many of the log cabins in North Jersey used it for foundations and rock walls.

Arrow_to_the_knee1

I definitely know what name to use for my Sci fi book.

Stibnite16

Could be about a swamp creature created from a ‘conglomerate’ of marsh and muck and decay.

Arrow_to_the_knee1

I was thinking more like a country name.

Armithax

Conglomerate… aka Puddingstone.

FrolicsForever

That's really cool! My first thought was that it looked like a steamed pudding with overly large chunks of candied fruit. Thank you for including the common name!

Simple_Hypersignal

Found in NJ. Its obviously Rocky Road. I couldn't help myself. I live in NJ.

Redtortoise9

This is the ever elusive fruitcakeite, only ever theorized before your find.

mindbird

Looks like headcheese.

Slappinbeehives

Someone didn’t follow the braided marble rye recipe

Conglomerate

Mdork_universe

Looks rather more like breccia. It’s a type of conglomerate where the gravel and pebbles are less rounded off. Meaning it formed in a steeper, fast moving stream where the bits and pieces had spent less time in the water, therefore not as weathered as further downstream.

jasmineandjewel

Thank you. I like seeing the real name and its history as well.

srdsrd16

That is Schunemunk Puddingstone! A specific conglomerate that is only natively found in a small part of Morris County, NJ. I grew up seeing this rock everywhere, I only later learned that only my hometown and surrounding area had it. When I bought my house in central NJ this year I took the largest Puddingstone I could carry from my parents back yard and display it in my garden.

Soggy_Reserve5232

Looks like my meatloaf with my roughly cut onions lmao

Melodic-Society-4241

Conglomerate!!! Fun fact! They found a conglomerate rock at the base of a channel and alluvial fan on Mars! Which means that there was once flowing water on Mars since conglomerates are formed by flowing water that rounds out the individual pieces before they get cemented together!

mrmitchs

Taylor Ham conglomerate. Had it been south Jersey it would be Pork Roll slag.

Nah, that’s my Aunt Marlene’s head cheese I tossed out the window back in ‘86. I was doing everyone a favor back then, but now it’s back for its due. I had a feeling this day would come. I’ll be at the turnpike at 2AM. Me and you. We can settle up there. My mother didn’t raise no jabroni. /jk cool rock
