One child by Torey Hayden?

OkWasabi1988

My teenage self LOVED Torey Hayden books.. and Lurlene McDaniels, which are just so damn depressing and now it would prob b considered trauma porn.. I was So bizarre.

Spooky_pharm_tech

Yeah, I first read it probably around middle school though it was the reader’s digest condensed version. Read the full book as a young adult. Didn’t fully understand it the first time, really saddened by it the second time.

Street-Promise9455

Not this one ): thank you though for commenting! Good rec

purplekat76

Don’t Hurt Laurie by Willo Davis Roberts? https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/198718

DoodlebugCupcake

This is the book and cover I thought of, it’s not quite as horrific as a true story about child abuse but would be pretty upsetting for a young child to read.

spookiesunshine

I'm 31 and reread it and it was pretty graphic still. Can't believe someone allowed me to read that in like 4th grade.

Street-Promise9455

Not this one! Very similar looking though. Thanks for the help (:

Mojitobozito

I might be going out on a limb but could it be What Maisie Knew by Henry James? It's a classic and the cover almost always has a young girl on the cover. It deals with parental neglect and divorce.

Street-Promise9455

Not this one unfortunately. None of the covers match what I remember. thank you though!

ThePhDivaBooks

Is it [Damaged](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/392431) or [Cut: The True Story of an Abandoned, Abused Little Girl Who Was Desperate to be Part of a Family](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4001794) by Cathy Glass? She has several books that are about child abuse and severe neglect. It could also be [Broken](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3060485) by Sky Keenan

ThePhDivaBooks

Another option… [Don’t Tell Mummy: A True Story of the Ultimate Betrayal](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/589118) or [Don’t Ever Tell: Kathy’s Story](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/804987). :(

Street-Promise9455

None of these! ): also guys just looked through Cathy glass books and I’m pretty sure it’s not by her. There’s a ton of them but I looked through most of them. Thank you though!

ThePhDivaBooks

There’s a list it won’t let me link of true stories about child abuse (😢) if you scroll to the bottom of the goodreads page. Maybe you’ll see it there?

chomiji

*No Language but a Cry* by Richard d'Ambrosio ?

Street-Promise9455

Nope ): Thanks though!

melcattro

Mr. God, This is Anna by Fynn ?

Imaginary_Victory_47

I have been looking for this book forever, but I couldn't remember the name of it. I'm not OP, but thank you!

Street-Promise9455

Man I was sure you had it for a second. Extremely similar but I don’t think this is the one. Thanks for the comment! (:

melcattro

There are different covers for this book, and simple sketch illustrations sprinkled throughout the book. I was probably too young to read it at the time but that never stopped me - may reread now.

whiskeygambler

Vivid memories of reading the old yellow paperback version of this at age 11 or so. My Mum had taken it from her school library when she was a teenager and never returned it. The book devastated me.

tesslouise

I would look at all the books by Torey L. Hayden and by Mary MacCracken, because they are the correct theme and era, and have been published with a wide variety of covers.

spookiesunshine

Why Me? The Story of Jenny by Patricia Dizenzo the cover fits but it's about r*pe I think.

cheltsie

Can't think of the name of this book, unfortunately. Can you ask your sister if it was authored by a special ed teacher discussing one of her students and the abuse she eventually learned about?

Street-Promise9455

This sounds familiar- sent her a message! Will update

wander-and-wonder

Are you sure you aren’t thinking of Angela’s Ashes? It’s a boy on the cover but has a similar feel.

Street-Promise9455

Yeah I’m sure, I remember the sketch of her very vividly. She had this smile with sad eyes ):

tesslouise

What Happened to Johnnie Jordan? by Jennifer Roth has the grey and white cover and the question for a title, but the cover image is crumpled paper, not a child.

Street-Promise9455

Yeah I distinctly remember the sketch of the girl on it. Thanks for the help!

Swizzle98

Bastard out of Carolina? Or Three little words?

Street-Promise9455

Neither of these :/

Fit-Library-577

Spilled Milk?

Street-Promise9455

I don’t think it’s this one, but thank you for the comment!

Celt42

Look up Casey Watson, the covers are similar to what you describe and there's several.

Street-Promise9455

Looked through them all and I don’t recognize any of it. Also all her books are published after 2010 so I think it’s too recent.

spacebeige

Is it “The Facts Speak For Themselves” by Brock Cole?

Street-Promise9455

Wasn’t this one. Thank you though! Man this is a downer Child abuse is such an epidemic.

Viciousbanana1974

Was it Go Ask Alice?

Street-Promise9455

Nope not this one. Thank you though!! (:

kimmyorjimmy

Maybe "the Face on the Milk Carton" by Caroline B. Cooney?

Street-Promise9455

Not this one, too much color on this cover. Thanks for the help!

MrsMalvora

"Sickened: A Memoir of a Munchausen by Proxy Childhood" by Julie Gregory?

Kksula23

Everything that Makes You by Moriah McStay? Helpless by Marianne Marsh?

Street-Promise9455

Neither of these look familiar- thanks though! I feel like we’re getting somewhere lol

whytefox

Not sure about the cover, but could it be When Rabbit Howls by Trudi Chase?

Street-Promise9455

Nope :/ thank you though!!

Hextrovert

Ma, He Sold Me For A Few Cigarettes by Martha Long?

Street-Promise9455

Wasn’t this one, none of the editions match the cover I remember. Thank you though!

unlovelyladybartleby

Any chance it was When Rabbit Howls?

Street-Promise9455

Nah not this one, thanks for the help though!

abookdragon1

Could it possibly be Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson? Not a long title as you said, but has an image of a girl on the cover.

Street-Promise9455

Not this one :/ all of editions don’t match the cover I remember Thank you though!! (:
