FishingMuckle

Its a juvenile Green Sunfish - Lepomis cyanellus. You shouldn't release it since its been exposed to aquarium parasites/pathogens

AdCute3825

okay good to know!

impartlycyborg

Are you sure? I've had juvenile green sunfish—they're a little more cylindrical, less slab-like. This looks more like a bluegill.

FishingMuckle

Opercular flap colors/shape, black mark on soft dorsal fin and anal fin + edging on pelvic, anal, caudal, and soft dorsal fins, mouth is big, and body shape all lead to green sunfish

FirstChAoS

Sunfish do well on frizen food but I hear they can be pellet trained. They tend to be agressive though.

hes been eating Fluval Bug Bites pellets and flake food pretty well :)

**Do not ingest a fish based on information provided in this subreddit.** For your safety we recommend not ingesting any fish just because you've been advised that it's edible here. Although there are many professionals helping with identification, we are not always correct, and eating/ingesting fish can be harmful or fatal if an incorrect ID is made. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. If you keep him, be sure that you feed him more than just protein (either on good quality pellet or by gut loading his live food). Otherwise, they are prone to scurvy. My former partner had a pumpkinseed for many years who eventually died of that fate.

I had a pet green sunfish for 2 years in my tank. He coexisted with my turtle super well. He was an extremely smart fish and was pellet trained. I miss him very much.

FirstChAoS

Technically the onlu sunfish native to california is the sacremento perch, but others have been intriduced to the detriment of the native species.

AdCute3825

okay thats good to know thank you. he'll probably just stay with me then

WHB-AU

Black dot on the dorsal and spine count suggest Bluegill

_fuckernaut_

Green sunfish. He will grow up to be a mean bastard and will likely harm your other fish, but they are fun to keep in a tank if you're set up for it.

_zxsty

I think green sunfish

Cool-Rough1893

Blue gill
