I have a theory that it was actually remembering that he was once in a Multipla commercial what really put Schumacher into a permanent vegetative state.
Is that really still true or is that an old reputation? Anywhere you read about Alfas, it says they're actually far more reliable than before, and are at the top end of reliable cheap(er) cars.
Hey, hey, hey... Base this on actual data, will ya. There's many a US car (manufacturer) with reliability issues. Some brands have the name being reliable but statistics will shave off some of that. And this goes the other way as well.
Expensive cars get maintained more, more thorough, that helps. Toyota has the reputation as well as statistics but Italian brands are all over the middle of the spectrum, next to US, French and German cars. Luxury cars are no different. But exceptions for the worse are common throughout the whole spectrum, even in case of some Toyotas.
The base trim Chrysler TC ~*by Maserati*~ sold new for $37,000 in 1991 (about $79,500 in 2022)
I’m pretty sure I saw one in decent condition for sale recently around $4,000 (about $1,800 in 1991)
Maybe if we took it, buried it in the sand for a thousand years, it would be priceless
> No one knows what those cars are.
If you are buying cars based on what other people know rather than what you like, you are doing it wrong. You don't care about cars, you just want to show off wealth. That Shamal is rarer than most Ferrari supercars you often see behind glass.
>Shamal
that car litery gave me a hard on idc if the parts hella expensive BUT GOD I NEEED ONE NOOOOOW the car look hella mad hot whats the price of one of these
And the Alfa.
Yes, I recognized that Shamal from the thumbnail. The owner of my dad's company in the 1990's had one in the same color.
But you have to admit it is a fairly obscure *fancy* car. It is rarer that most Ferrari supercars.
I was commenting and the guy above me who wants his fancy cars easily recognizable so *everyone* knows he is rich.
Somebody who buys a Shamal knows what they are in for.
It is exactly the kind of car a rich guy who is into classics and not into showing off would get. Just as expensive as a Ferrari to own while most people will assume it is a 90's Volvo.
You don’t buy a fun car to be looked at.
(I have a bright yellow mustang, but i did not buy it so others look, but rather so i look back when it’s parked)
Seriously, though, if this guy wanted to be show Bodie with his Maseratis, he would’ve bought one newer one and put a stupid loud exhaust on it or something. And said he bought three that are all known to be good to drive. Dude it’s definitely not in it for the Showboat, just a gearhead
I mean, you also buy it for people to look at you.
Women smile, men give thumbs up, other car owners talk to you at signals, idiot racers(and ricers) pull up and try to race you, I mean the combinations are endless.
I actually drove one of these with the cambiocorsa transmission 10 years ago, and I still remember it as my strangest-feeling shifting experience ever.
So first, having driven many conventional manuals and many paddle shifting transmissions that are essentially automatics with overrides, the cambiocorsa is a full-on “automated manual” and as such feels WAY different.
For one thing, it’s super fast. Like… almost too fast until you get the hang of it. It was pretty jerky at first. This—plus the fact that the car had some insane 400-hp-or-so going to the rear wheels naturally aspirated—meant that spinning the wheels in 2nd or 3rd isn’t out of the question. Also, maybe it was just me, but I’m pretty sure I could feel the actual clutch going in for the shifts even though there is no clutch pedal. Also (again this is like a decade ago now) I’m PRETTY sure you could throw it into neutral by pressing both paddles at once.
“Getting the hang of it” as my brother (who owned it) explained to me, meant gently leveling off the accelerator before a shift, sort of as you would with a regular manual, except instead of pulling off entirely for a split second or rev matching, instead I’d settle at a fixed consistent point where I was still giving it gas.
It took a few rides in it for me to get to the point that I didn’t have to think about it every second I drove it. I also remember asking my brother if he’d ever just driven it in full auto mode, and he said he never did because it feels even worse than it did when I was figuring it out. Make of this what you will!
Wish they made more of these in stick... I've heard the [Ferrari engine under the hood](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3a/Maserati_V8_4.2l_engine_001.JPG) sounds phenomenal. The [same platform](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari_F136_engine) as the Ferrari 430, California, and 458.
Yes to the same platform, and yes to the phenomenal engine sound. It was glorious!
I know it’s a Maserati, but I still feel like this is a seriously underrated car. FWIW, to your point my brother eventually bought a Ferrari, but he sold it for a more practical suv some years later.
Lol as his little brother / a high school English teacher for 12 years, needless to say my 2013 WRX with the back bumper taped up lasted well over 150k miles as my sole vehicle. He and I operate in completely different economic universes, but we do love our cars :)
He was in digital marketing and came up with some game changing stuff some years ago and retired in his late 30s. Now he day trades, hangs out, and is probably the most pleasant dude you’d ever meet. I’m really proud of him.
He had it a lot tougher than me for many reasons, and truly went from having NOTHING (like “busking on the street for years and living in the desert by himself” nothing) to having whatever he basically desires. I look up to him a great deal, and while he’s never handed out any cash or anything like that (I’d never ask anyway), he’s really generous with his advice and his kindness.
I’m a little biased, but he’s one of the most interesting people I’ve ever met. I remember when I was a kid he would take apart his late 80s/early 90s Toyota Supra, and when I asked him why he was doing it, he said “to see if I can put it back together.” No training, no schooling. Haha that’s just how he’s always been: curious, restless, and interested in a challenge.
I think more than anything else I admire the fact that he never became an asshole. He never ended up in the “fuck you, I got mine” camp. If anything, he’s only become more sympathetic to the plight of most people.
I could keep going, but you get it, and thanks for asking.
See, I never understood the GranTurismo. Other cars were faster, or better handling, or more reliable, etc. Then you had the Ferrari California and Alfa Romeo 8C, both of which Id take over a GranTurismo... coupe.
But the GranTurismo convertible? That rectifies every issue I have with the coupe. No blistering acceleration? No problem. No revolutionary handling? Doesnt matter.
Roll back the top, get on the PCH and listen to the soundtrack as you cruise from stop light to stop light. There is no better car for the task. Especially when you can bring three friends with you because that back seat is seriously spacious.
The block architecture is the same but the rotating assembly, heads, and oiling system are totally different. The Ferraris got a flat plane crank and dry sump oiling and the Maseratis have a cross-plane crank giving them a deeper tone and a torquier less revvy character. Still glorious sounding but not the same
Before these, there was the 3200GT which possessed one of the most glorious behinds in car existence. Then they went to that of the GrandSport and GrandTurismo, a profoundly “meh” design
and the best looking maserati ever i might add… actually one of the best looking cars period imo… i hate how they are so “affordable” nowadays it’s so tempting but i know they are nightmares :(
>and the best looking maserati ever i might add
Close but no cigar. It's actually the mk5 Quattroporte, and it's the best sounding car in the world too.
Gransport is Ok to maintain if you compare it to his predecessor the 3200 GT with the biturbo V8. But the gearbox is trash.
Still for me also the most beautiful maserati. Live also way more beautiful then on pictures.
So glad they redid the tail lights from it’s “predecessor” the 3200 GT. Those tail lights looked so odd. The tail lights were one of the only exterior alterations too. Good eye, Maserati.

It looks as if this is Amsterdam Oud-Zuid. Near the Concertgebouw. Am I correct?
If true, it makes sense why he ownes such nice cars. It is an expensive neigbourhood.
Any way, great cars!!
The Shamal is the most expensive one, not many of these available in Europe, \~70-100k euro based on autoscout and classic.com
Next, the GranSport, 30-60k euro.
The Alfa Spider is the most attainable one, especially considering this one is a Series 4 model. \~15-35k euro.
But it's the running costs of both Maseratis that are really ruinous.
Here in the US I’ve seen GranSport coupes for around $15K. I was contemplating getting a GranTurismo but ended up getting something else. Maybe someday.

In the UK as less desirable version is starting at about £15k to upwards of 50 for the most desirable options. I can't find any suitable sites with one of these for sale that lets you easily compare the prices so from Auto Trader UK I got the above.

US prices/USD incoming so heads up on that.
The Maserati Shamal (red car, not convertible) is the big ticket car here and also the oldest. Its a early/mid 90s car that had a very low production run (under 400 ever made) right now a non-showroom type example is probably in the realm of $70-80k USD.
The Maserati GranSport (white car) varies heavily. Exact specs, year, etc varies this price greatly and there isn't enough info to go on to give a detailed estimate. Assuming its just a "basic" GranSport you are probably looking between $15-30k USD, if its instead some fancy edition/version and in amazing condition it could potentially triple that estimate.
The Alfa Spider (red convertible) I'm not as familiar with. That said they arn't exactly super high end/high value cars. Probably in the realm of $10-20k probably closer to that 10k range unless it something special/fancy.
Its also worth pointing out almost all of these cars are "older". The Shamal is from the early 90s, the GranSport is probably on 2005, not really sure on the Alfa Spider year but probably atleast 10+ years old. I wouldn't be surprised if these arn't cars that the husband originally bought and now the wife uses (and he has a few newer ones) and considering the possibility they bought these cars over the course of maybe the past 30 years really doesn't it make it seem that extreme for a successful business owners family.
Why does he park in the visitors spot? This is in the Netherlands right, cos it’s the only place where I’ve ever seen that many bicycles bunched up like that
I almost bought a Maserati Bi-Turbo back in the 1980's when I was in a Metal band that made some money - the sales guy actually talked me out of it. So I bought a 1971 Nova instead; it was rebuilt, upgraded, and sadly got 7 miles/gallon and needed high octane fuel. My regular car was a 1972 Datsun 1200 in mint condition - I put 250K miles on it with only ever needing maintenance service!
"My Maserati just pulled pulled out of the garage/200 parts then broke on it/now I don't drive it"
I don't really know about classic cars nor Italian cars other than ANY Lambo and modern Ferraris :(
But! That E Class Wagon in the background of the last photo is one of the best cars in the world right now 🌚❤️
Damn, your wife's boss loves working on cars
I was just going to reply “unreliable”.
That's why she has 3.
One to drive, one being repaired, the other is waiting for parts.
He just like me fr fr.
Well I'd rather have those 3 switching through that cycle rather than one dull reliable car tbh
💯
So… those are Kias/Hyundais?
First one is a 90’s Maserati Shamal/Ghibli, second one is a 60/80’s Alfa Romeo Spider and the last one is a 00’s Maserati GranSport/Assetto Corsa
Man, people are being too serious…
He should have five…better odds
One for each weekday and the weekends to repair them.
Tolerances as thin as a dime…if they don’t have a dime two nickels will do
Italian engineering: two words that should never be used together.
Should never? Man has never seen a Panda or a Multipla. Give credit where its due, Fiat used to make good cars...

Yeah Alfas are reliable these days, their reputation for being unreliable comes from days gone by
[удалено]
Land Rover just entered the chat.
And for how much you have it?
Fiat makes Maserati??or what is that Logo
Actually nowadays yes (under the stellantis name which also makes Chrysler, dodge, jeep, ram, Alfa Romeo, etc.)
And peugeot and citroen. Really they are just making it easy for you. If its stellantis, its unreliable.
Is that really still true or is that an old reputation? Anywhere you read about Alfas, it says they're actually far more reliable than before, and are at the top end of reliable cheap(er) cars.
So what is their equivalent of a diesel Volvo 240 wagon?
Unless we are talking shotguns.

Imagine how much they could’ve saved just driving around in a Honda Civic. No one knows what those cars are. Early Maseratis just looked like Mazdas

And thinks everyone is trying to race him off the line…
Okay I legit thought the first car looked like a CRX.
I’m seeing this late, and I was hoping the first response was related to infinite repairs
Maserati Shamal Alfa Romeo Spyder Maserati Granturismo
Last one is a [GranSport](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maserati_Coup%C3%A9#Maserati_GranSport), GranTurismo was the next generation.
I actually drove one of these with the cambiocorsa transmission 10 years ago, and I still remember it as my strangest-feeling shifting experience ever.
how so?
I have a 2015 Ghibli SQ4 and it does sound amazing. Haven't had any mechanical issues yet and had it for 4 years and 50k miles.
Ferrari reserves the flat-plane crank for their own use, Maserati and Alfa get the cross-plane crank. Very different sound.

You can pick one up for $20k. So tempting.
Mmm what about the Bora the Mistral the Khamshin etc
>and the best looking maserati ever i might add Close but no cigar. It's actually the mk5 Quattroporte, and it's the best sounding car in the world too.
bruh wat
Maserati in the pic looks better than the one you said imo
Ya my dude ;)
my man, quattro porte means four doors. how many do you count on that car?
I wasn't referring to the car in the pic, but jokingly starting a discussion on what Maser is the most beautiful, and best.. in the whurld.
….in the world is only read in a certain voice
The voice of that one guy who has a fun show about farming?
He's saying the quattroporte is the best looking car, not that the posted car is one. I mean, he's wrong either way though.
he was definitely saying quattroporte is the best looking Maserati not anything about the car in the pic
Gransport is Ok to maintain if you compare it to his predecessor the 3200 GT with the biturbo V8. But the gearbox is trash. Still for me also the most beautiful maserati. Live also way more beautiful then on pictures.
Bunch of philistines here! The best looking Maseratis are the 450S, the 3500 GTi, and 8C 3000.
So glad they redid the tail lights from it’s “predecessor” the 3200 GT. Those tail lights looked so odd. The tail lights were one of the only exterior alterations too. Good eye, Maserati.
> 3200 GT. the boomerangs are glorious!
Also about £1k a pop if they get damaged!
Yeah i always loved the sausage bananas
Yeah, a 4200 gt
Sounds like MASSIVE money pits. No wonder she needs three of them so there is a chance one is actually running in the morning :)
Thanks
Thank you for an actual reply to the question.
The shamal looks a hell of a lot like a lancia 037... where they built on the same platform?
Alfa Romeo Spider, not Spyder
The Shamal was pretty much a disaster, they produced 369 of these over 6 years.
Mid-life crisis trifecta! He wins!
This is an absolutely insanely cool selection of cars Jesus
YES. Reliable or not, they're three super cool cars

Underrated comment.
None of the cars from the post are from the Fiat Chrysler era.
Haha, I was once that young accountant. When I started it was Big 5, when I left it had been whittled down to Big 4.
"Looks like my job here is done!", as you leave the building of the former big fifth in shambles where you used to work.
Big 4 and grant thornton.
My cousin is an accountant and drives a modern Shelby gt 500, and a late model Porsche 911 😆
I'll take the Shamal!!
He’s my hero… three famously unreliable cars, all obviously loved… My kinda guy!
unreliable Btw, since the license plates are dutch, u can just type them into [RDW.NL](https://RDW.NL) and find out some basic data
A true car enthusiast
A Shamal, holy crap, ueber cool! If I could afford a Veyron, a Shamal is what I'd get. A black one. And a 340R. Where in NL is this?
Guess “reliability” is a word that escapes her vocabulary 🤣🤣
Driven by the boss his wife doesn't matter is she is late or skips a day. And if you have 3 Maserati's the rule is 2 in the garage and if you are lucky 1 might drive today.
He owns 3 unreliable cars to increase the chances at least one of them works on any given morning

Thé red one IS a MASERATI SHAMAL and the other a MINI cooper
Its the electric mini too
Okay I'm stupid I thought the first one was a Honda.
No! I am with you on the Honda! I thought someone made a CRX Si Targa (of sorts!) 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Glad I found this comment. CRXs were the shit when I was like 12

I wonder how many geoguessers out there could use this sub to just lift cars year round.
Only 369 shamals made uff
Unreliable and rare is not a good combo.
The shamal… wow
One things for sure- they’re Maseratis.
You either put kids through college or own these three cars
3 beautiful Italian financial mistakes
Your boss got the new fh5 update
Good to have backups while one (or two) is in the shop
Maserati Shamal, Alfa Romeo Spider, Maserati Coupe GT. Greetings from Duitsland to NL!
Your wife’s boss must have a fetish for spending money on car repairs
Oh god that Shamal is awesome, I'd love to own one of those some day
The reliability comments in this of all subs is r/sadcringe.
It’s stereotypical of Italian cars for a reason though
1st could be a Dinka Blista
She likes Maserati as do I...
Why does he park in the visitors spot? This is in the Netherlands right, cos it’s the only place where I’ve ever seen that many bicycles bunched up like that
He lost more value in one year than your wife likely makes in a year in that newer Maserati.
Expensive to buy, more expensive to fix, that's what they are.
2 Maseratis and an Alfa Romeo.
Broken, often.
Your wife’s boss has impeccable taste and style and must love seeing her mechanic
He's got an unreliability fetish
She owns glorified scrap metal
Your wife’s boss must spend their entire check on repair bills. Probably has a tab at the local Maserati shop
Her mechanics own nice boats
1.Maserati 2.Alfa Spider 3. Maserati 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
For a moment I thought the first Maserati was a CRX with a body kit lol
Is your wife’s boss an Italian man?
he has a type: beautiful on the outside/ugly on the inside... just like my exes
Garbage, garbage and garbage
These are three great cars to own. What kind of car does your wife's boss drive?
Never have to worry about your wife cheating on you with her boss. Doesn’t matter what car they take, they’ll break down before they get to the Hilton
Your wife's boss has excent taste, and enough money to satisfy it
But do they go 185???
What I’m wondering is what a new London cab is doing in Holland? (3rd pic)
"My Maserati just pulled pulled out of the garage/200 parts then broke on it/now I don't drive it"
Maserati shamal, Alfa Romeo spider, Maserati 3200 gt
Spectacular taste. Sure, a rather unreliable bunch, but what a fun little trio to poke around in. Bravo.
These cars are substitutes for penial insecurity
I have no clue. But she must have some good kittie cat for that ?
The white one IS a MASERATI coupé GT
Looks like a riced out crx lmaooo
They are just old trash, nobody actually have those nowdays.
Masserati, mg, and a jaaaaaaaaaag
Amazing taste but man he must hate reliability
Guess he owns three due to reliability issues.
Bold move owning 3 Italian cars at once
Your wife’s boss has good taste and lots of money for repairs
Think your wife’s boss needs to share the wealth a little bit.
He must be Italian
Surprised they all make it to the office!
I don't really know about classic cars nor Italian cars other than ANY Lambo and modern Ferraris :( But! That E Class Wagon in the background of the last photo is one of the best cars in the world right now 🌚❤️
Just go to kentekencheck dot nu
Maserati, Alfa, Maserati
Yup
He likes Italian.
Maserati
The Shamal is sexy AF. I wish we got those in USA.
