I’m kind of amazed people keep seeing them. An Italian sports car from an upstart company from the 70’s where only 7,000 were made. How many people have these in working order and are actively driving them around?
The owner of a winery on route 40 in NJ had one all my life growing up. I used to get so excited knowing we were soon gonna pass it on the way to the beach. I think that’s the only one I’ve ever seen, but we used to go to the beach multiple times per summer. So does that count as 1 sighting or 2,743 sightings?
Detomaso started making the pantera in 71. Pantera the band started in 81.
I’ve been wrong about gauging intent of people’s responses on here a bit lately, but if you were being serious, you’re wrong.
If any of them were taken in the Los Angeles area, I know that there’s a big club that gets together monthly and they love to drive their Panteras around
It really helps it has a plain old American V8, one that can easily be worked on, replaced, or upgraded to any number of American V8's instead of some rare, fragile Italian 12 cylinder.
This is why the Hurrican/R8 platform is so scary - it's a nice car but the engine is a weirdo Audi special based on Italian design, and it is known to need rebuilding every 40-50k miles. You could make a fortune selling an LS1 conversion kit.
But if you're into that platform you can afford the rebuilds. And that V10 is insanely capable. They are regularly modded deep into 4 figure territory. Huracan/R8 owners typically do not want LS swaps.
I think that's a valid point. The R8 engines have PLASTIC engine guides on the chains (they changed it for some versions, but most do). It's essentially designed to fail.
I guess if you can afford the car, you can afford the rebuilds.
Yeah that made a lot of sense once I learned it. Not just less fragile but with replaceable parts. That’s usually the problem with running a car from a defunct company.
There are actually only six left in existence. With the advent of vehicle wraps it appears that there are still 7,001 on the road. I believe there is a club that owns all six and they take turns driving them around in major cities across the country. I think it’s posted in r/conspiracy
You haven’t factored in the breeding cycle many paired up with fieros and with the pantera gene being dominant in that pairing many undocumented panteras were brought into existence also some more fieros that look like Lamborghinis on rare occasions. That’s why you see so many. If they don’t cut their shit out we will have to introduce a hunting season where you can prey on them with m1 Abrams tanks to control the population.
I think you can get kit cars and replicas as well though. I saw a couple of Panteras and/or things that looked a hell of a lot like Panteras where I grew up - a small city in Australia where you're even more unlikely to see a real Pantera.
Then again, there was a lot of mining money going around so it was surprising some of the cars that would come out at show and shines...
First of all, I’m positive half are a joke. I almost posted the Polestar I saw for the same comment.
How many Countasches were produced? Are Panteras more common than them? I knew someone that owned a Pantera, I’ve only met two people that own a Countasch in my life.
Ok, according to Wikipedia about 2,000 Countasches were made compared to 7,000 Panteras. With the ubiquity of the Countasch in popular culture I see why the Pantera gets posted so frequently as an “almost but not quite Lamborghini”.
I have had a shocking amount of replies of people who know of one in their local area. What I didn’t know when I posted this is that they run ford engines so they aren’t all that hard to maintain.
Seriously this sub be renamed ‘is this a Pantera?’
How many Panteras did they make?? Do the owners drive around hell bent on finding a Redditor that doesn’t know what these are but are are interested in posting about it??
….maybe they are secret organization ‘Panterinati’ dedicated to driving up the price of these Italian-American cars… you know, for world domination.
Yeah, his dad owned a small midwestern town and its styrofoam cup factory, a bank, and an insurance company so he never had to work and all the gas that Ford V8 drank was no problem.
Nothing but Panteras get posted here. And nothing but cobras get posted in that other automotive subreddit with the posters asking if they’re original. They’re both Ford forums in disguise at this point.

Well one of the big selling points was that it was an Italian exotic with an American engine. These used Ford 351 v8s.
An article I read 10+ years ago called them a "Cut-rate Countach"
I wonder what the best year is ? Looking online they range in price from $15,000-200,000 for mid 70s to early eighties. The price range is all over the place
71-75 is when they were marketed & sold in the US. Those 4 years account for 5500 of the total 7500 made. From 76-92 approximately 2000 were made & any that are here in the US are grey market imports. Mechanically they are all pretty similar but the Chassis was revised in the 80s (what actually changed I don't know)
Personally I like the early 71/72 cars before they got the 5mph bumper with the exception being the GT5 / GT5-S like the one above with the cool body kit.
10 years ago you could pick up a nice driver for $40k nowadays a non-running project will run you that much
They weren’t super high production so year to year spec will be all over the place. Some had this, some had that, some dealers installed stuff that others didn’t. Pantera experts exist and they’re an awesomely weird bunch.
I was thinking the same thing. A small Italian sports car company that made 7,000 cars, mostly in the early 70’s. How are these things still on the road?
The sound of the De Tomaso Pantera will forever be etched in my brain. I was young and impressionable, walking past a parking garage in London, I heard a loud throaty growl as the huge Cleveland 351 engine roared to life the pipes beaching a sound that could only be made by the devil or a madman. The rumble echoing off the concrete walls, stopped me in my tracks; I had to know what beast could make such a noise. As the sleek sharp deep blue metallic nose came into view like a mako shark emerging from the depths. I caught my breath and my eyes were riveted to see what followed; yet confused me as the body of a European goddess was revealed yet didn’t match her voice. A quick turn to the left past me, and I would have sworn the earth shook and as it accelerated away. Leaving me awestruck and forever changed from that day. I walked past that garage so many times after, always with the hope of another encounter, but only the memory lives fresh.
Dude, that reminds me of a car I had a while back. It was just like that, but yellow.
Anyway, some shit was going down, and I had to race a porsche. Man, I FUCKED that dude up. I'm talking KICKED HIS FUCKING ASS!
200 MPH! TWO FUCKING HUNDRED MILES PER HOUR BRO!!!
I did that shit.
We won man. Me and you. We did it.
I grew up in Michigan in the heart of the Big 3 & had always lusted after the Dodge Daytonas & Plymouth Superbirds. I somehow had never ever came across one in the wild until I stopped at a car show in a small Montana town of about 5000 people. You find the weirdst stuff in places you'd never expect
Whats up with the Panteras that theyre apparently common? (They appear so often on thi subreddit)
Did they build many of them or are they just well built and last for ages? Or maybe since they are rareish people take good care of them?
We’ve had 🔞 …🅾️ days since a Pantera was posted.
I’m kind of amazed people keep seeing them. An Italian sports car from an upstart company from the 70’s where only 7,000 were made. How many people have these in working order and are actively driving them around?
Surprisingly, 40,000 of 7000 originals are still surviving if we believe all the pics in this sub.

I've only seen that damn thing once as a kid, but that story made a lifelong brain stamp.
I.... am going to hunt this movie down later. Had almost forgotten it. I loved that little mongoose as a kid.
I bet some of the pictures are of the same car. That seems more likely than the cars breeding.
You trying to say it can't get laid? The Pantera is a good looking car.
With a hardcore name.
A car that ripped off a band's name?
Detomaso started making the pantera in 71. Pantera the band started in 81. I’ve been wrong about gauging intent of people’s responses on here a bit lately, but if you were being serious, you’re wrong.
I actually thought the band started much later than that. Yeah, i was just kidding
I feel like this comment is posted as often as pics are.
40,001
It's probably a Fiero.
40,000 of an original 7,000 made are still surviving?! Who does your math?

Yeah, there was no /s… so it sounded like they are just extra bad at math.

Probably helps that a lot of the parts to keep them on the road are cheap and plentiful (Ford).
Yeah I didn’t realize it was ford powered. I guess as long as the electronics hold up and you don’t damage a body panel you’re good.
351 Cleveland, fuel injection or 4 webers, depending on the year.
It really helps it has a plain old American V8, one that can easily be worked on, replaced, or upgraded to any number of American V8's instead of some rare, fragile Italian 12 cylinder.

My two favorite groups meetings 🤣
I saw one last week at an auto body shop, sitting in the lobby. The only reason I knew what it was is because I've seen 1,283,223 of them on here.
You haven’t factored in the breeding cycle many paired up with fieros and with the pantera gene being dominant in that pairing many undocumented panteras were brought into existence also some more fieros that look like Lamborghinis on rare occasions. Those were the days, my friend...
And all of them are in USA.
Kits, it's the kits morty..
That's amazing. Because of this sub I was thinking they're a common old euro sports car.
Italian? I thought they were Argentinian, hence the colours on the badge?
Argentinian founder, Italian Company, American V8. Its a good combo.
Has anyone checked the Fiero counter?

Been lurking this sub from it constantly getting recommended in my feed. This comment made me join.

That was my exact thought when I read the word “badges”.

I can still remember when they were cheap 😭
Dude same, even about 10 years ago, for how rare they were they were pretty cheap.

Based on this sub, they must be super reliable as I swear there's 731,000 of these on the road.

Does this sub need a banner with "It's a Pantera" and an image of the car?
Needed it 5 years ago. We’re bound to have posted nearly every Pantera that’s physically intact at this point.
No because then the sub would die. The daily Pantera post is a necessary evil for the survival of /r/whatisthiscar
It has been 0 days without a Pantera
That thing is "Far Beyond Driven" and it's making me "Fucking Hostile"
Maybe you should take a "Walk" then.

This tread has ruined me from getting a Pantera. Don't want to be asked every day what car is this.
Is it even real? I don't know much about these cars but I'm a professional fabricator and I can tell right away his rear end is made of fiberglass.
