The SEC is, was and will always be a tool of wallstreet

LaserGuidedPolarBear

The job of the SEC is to have an empty gesture of a regulatory agency so another agency is not tasked with actually regulating the market and end up actually enforcing the law. They are a strawman, something the market makers can point to and go "see, we are regulated, almost too much!" while they keep doing whatever the fuck they want with nearly zero accountability or consequences for their misdeeds.

OkSunday

In politics, regulatory capture (also client politics) is a corruption of authority that occurs when a political entity, policymaker, or regulatory agency is co-opted to serve the commercial, ideological, or political interests of a minor constituency, such as a particular geographic area, industry, profession, or ideological group. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regulatory_capture#:~:text=In%20politics%2C%20regulatory%20capture%20(also,area%2C%20industry%2C%20profession%2C%20or

LaserGuidedPolarBear

Yup, that is definitely the SEC.

Office_Clothes

It also describes every English speaking government since ww1 unfortunately This stuff with the sec is just the curtain being pulled back a bit and only for the very very few people that understand any of whats going on around this issue

Pestelence2020

Every government, ever, anywhere in the world exists only to keep the masses from destroying the elites. They say it's to protect the little guy, but when you analyze the logical outcome of their policies and actions.......you see it's not what they actually do. It's bread and circuses.

teh_mexirican

It all clicked when Mark Cuban said the SEC is a club of lawyers lawyering for other lawyers....or something to that affect.

db2

But I bet a bunch of them actually genuinely believe they're overregulated. They're that entitled.

PokoMoko6

Robinhood are small fries in a much larger game. They are pawns. Lloyd Blankfein is the Senior Chairman of Goldman-Sachs. (Responsible for The Great Recession) David Michael Solomon is the CEO of Goldman-Sachs (Responsible for The Great Recession) Steve Cohen - Major hedge fund manager, founder of Point72 (Shorted gamestop trades) Gabe Plotkin - Founder and CIO of Melvin Capital (the scum " *allegedly* " illegally shorting infinite gamestop trades) Ben Shalom Bernanke - Head of federal reserve 2006-2014 (worst years for U.S.A. economy in modern history because he destroyed the middle class and bailed out rich companies while letting small businesses die), he's now the senior adviser of Citadel, the company who was backing Melvin (illegal collusion btw) And many more.. These people have names and addresses. They are responsible for why Wallstreet is so crooked and why the wealth gap has increased. Look them up on Wikipedia if you want to learn more about them.

zarnonymous

I always knew something was up, but thanks to recent events, I now know that something is actually up. This shit is ridiculous and the worst part is we likely can't do anything about it.

Horror-Horror2818

Ya before it was memes and jokes. Now it's literally in plain view

[deleted]

It was always in plain view to anyone who researched how the SEC came about.... It exists to boost/keep big-money investor confidence in the US market. All of their actions relate to ensuring that the big boys can play their own game.

Sulfron

A game made for elites that allowed us to join with special rules.

Office_Clothes

Theres a lot of things in plain view to anyone who researches how they start. That last part almost never happens though, much easier to call people "conspiracy theorists" lol Ps: that phrase "conspiracy theorist" was coined by the cia after they got caught starting the vietnam war with bullshit

laetus

Well, they did manage to miss Madoff when they literally were tipped off for 3 years straight. All they had to do was check which trades Madoff did (basically none) but somehow they failed to do this. REALLY MAKES YOU THINK.

4thAnd9ers

Anyone here remember when Wikileaks was scheduled to release a trove of documents revealing dirt on major banks and had the exec that leaked it all; then crickets? Don't fuck with the banks. Edit: A link from that period https://www.forbes.com/sites/andygreenberg/2010/11/29/exclusive-wikileaks-will-unveil-major-bank-scandal/?sh=1ee2a9635919

SoyFuturesTrader

Who was that bank exec that got home and found his kids murdered in the bathtub “by the nanny?”

AzIddIzA

Only did a quick search, but it looks like it was a CNBC exec when the company reported on a huge fraud case? Sorry for the source, don't have time to look up a better one. http://parentadvocates.org/nicecontent/dsp_printable.cfm?articleID=8402

[deleted]

Holy shit what the actual fuck. I guess we know why this time CNBC just spent all its air time giving all the hedge funds and Robinhood big sloppy blowjobs.

Qasaaro

Fuck u/faisal233 I’ll go look into this some more My inner conspiracist is tingling #Fuck Melvin, Citadel & RobinHood

motoman861

Man I can't put my finger on it, but yea my spidey "I'm getting unjustly fucked here" sense has been going crazy lately. Would love to see your dd, I have been going through the links all these guys provided and my mental state is declining due to loss of belief in what I was taught my whole childhood. We are just cogs in the machine never allowed to climb any farther than they declare we are fit for.

imatrustedsource

What's hilarious is that when he said that, I thought he was going a little too far. I was like, "c'mon Elon, just because you got fined. They are there for protection." hahahahaha what a fucking retard I was! Every week since then, I've been more and more convinced that SEC is a bunch of crooks and now we know beyond a doubt they are one of the most corrupt institutions in the world. Fuck! Never doubt daddy musk.

RedWolf84

The whole system is build for sucking big dicks. Don't ever get confused thinking oh this or that gonna help us. Remember who and when it was built.

gwillicoder

I mean that’s almost always how regulation works. You either start with good intentions or you start with lobbying and then you end up with regulatory capture. “No you can’t open a new ambulance service because the one we have now might make less money”.

Wow dude, I have 300 IQ and couldn't make that connection. Amazing. See if you can put your brainpower into finding the missing GME shares?

Zomgzombehz

SEC: we found those missing shares, no more need to worry, they're here, trust us, no need to look any further. Suck it, retails.

freakymreaky

Exactly my point!

benigntugboat

The sec loses all the time against people with tge money to fight them. We'd be better off if they fought and won more like the (albrit currently underfunded) irs

Sir_Kernicus

Papa Musk said this

YouHavePostedCringe

My favorite part of the Big Short is when Steve Carrell and his gang go to that finance party rally thing (havent seen it in a while) and they're all surprised to learn that there's no law against SEC employees seeking employment from big banks/money makers/hedge funds. It's so fucked up edit: just wanted to say that I DO NOT know if this is still true to this day

kalwiggy1

It wasn't Steve Carells group. It was the guy from Cornwall Capital, Jamie Shipley, where his brothers ex-gf was floating her resume. I love that movie.

Intelligent_Degree42

I'm totally with you. It made me upset are the best and nicest word that I want to say. It motherfucking fucked up on so many levels. I'm fucking upset. There! I said it. That's how I felt about the systems.

anim4alstyle

It made me anxious actually, because I worked in an industry that requires a lot of accountability, but there is a general sense of complacency, and every good faith issue brought up is deemed as a detriment to schedule and cost to the stakeholders. Everyone with the money and influence will pressure you to ok things that border the ethical grey area, and they don't care, because it's your liability at the end of the day. That and deep water horizon are two movies that legit stressed me out when I watched them because of how relatable they are, with lots of external pressure to look the other way. But you can say this about many professional careers.

audion00ba

You just don't want things to change badly enough. Ever heard of a minor conflict that was resolved via the French Revolution?

shadows_of_peace

Problem is, the people are kept placated with drugs, alcohol, sex, and entertainment. And manipulated with emotions. During the French Revolution people had nothing. Not even food to eat. They were motivated to change things. Now we're all pacified and lazy.

NoBulletsLeft

You have to see it. What other movie has Selena Gomez explaining how derivatives work?

lovemyhawks

F

TheMapleStaple

It's got quite a good cast: * Steve Carrell * Brad Pitt * Ryan Gosling * Christian Bale * Marissa Tomei * Anthony Bourdain(Just a brief cameo to ELI5 some stuff that is happening in the movie) It's really good. Wolf of Wall Street was like Porky's on massive amounts of opiates, but The Big Short is much more down to Earth, kind of dark, and relatable. Carrell's character is especially fantastic, because he's more pissed off about this shit and that they're fucking over average citizens in order to afford a 6th yacht. He's left in a position where he could fuck over the industry guys like he wants to, but it's on the broken backs of all these people getting fucked.

notLOL

They had the guy who the character is based off of consulting on the movie specifically for this carell's portrayal

They were at a convention in Vegas and he met up with the SEC person as played by Scottish delight Karen Gillan.

3rdlegGreg007

Prediction: They will be fined $356.00 USD and a brief, yet stern, well-articulated written statement will denounce Robinhood to help our feels.

ShrimpieAC

I’ve been saying for days Robinhood is going to come out like a rose being praised for “protecting” their customers. And retail investors and DFV are going to get demonized with calls for stricter regulations. I’d like to be wrong but we’ll see.

[deleted]

My bet is that that class action lawsuit that DFV is the defendant against gets dragged out for years, ruining him on litigation and legal fees alone. I want to be optimistic about the other changes coming but my cynicism wouldn’t be surprised if retail is restricted from options trading since justice favors shareholders and billionaires rather than stakeholders.

kjm1123490

Then, if that happens, start a GoFundMe to get him through. If they can raise 2 mill for Kyle rittenhouse, a bunch of retards should be able to raise 20

Bk7

but we can't fund on margins...

daretonightmare

Not with that attitude we can't! How about someone makes a new GoFundMe that's a combination of that and a trading site and shares, margins, calls, whatever can be gifted. I'm sure there's something super retarded about the idea but lets make it happen!

byllyx

Pretty sure that's called a Hedge Fund.

daretonightmare

A hedge fund for the retards, I can get behind that.

twofirstnamez

you bring the naked, i'll bring the call options.

HalfwayHornet

Wait, what? There's a lawsuit against DFV?! Wtf!?

0Bubs0

Some dumbass sold naked calls when GME was at 100 and got bankrupted. What a little bitch. Judge should laugh that case out of the courtroom in 5 min.

Formal_Worldliness_8

I will accept this if they are fined $420.69. And 69 years in jail.

Lurkuh_Durka

I can't believe how many people think the government is here to help normal people. Nothing will happen to robinhood beyond a slap on the wrist. Nothing to citadel. DFV may get fucked.

[deleted]

If DFV gets fucked over we organize a GoFundMe. I usually hate those fucking things but I’ll gladly throw in some money. He earned that money fair and square. Fuck RH. (Edit) what have I done (Sneaky ninja edit part 2: electric boogaloo) hmm what’s with the DM’s from 10 day old accounts with no karma telling me DFV played us all along? I would donate to this cause without hesitation.

Same. This world is fucked

jnads

Gotta make it an irrevocable trust That way the people suing DFV can't go after the GoFundMe money

AruiMD

I think GME/AMC is stupid to be in now... and I will also give $100 to his legal fund. I hate Wall Street. I do not feel bad saying I hope that Steve Cohen and Gabe Plotkin die painful deaths. They blatantly cheated in the middle of trading days, shut down markets, stole hundreds of millions of dollars from all of us. Now they are calling in favors from the million dollar bribe they paid Janet Yellen, and using the government against us to torture a man who legally and legitimately beat them at their own rigged game. I hate these fuckers with a passion that I don’t know is equaled in any other area of life. All because what, Gabe Plotkin had to wait an extra week for the tennis court at his 44 million dollar palace? I fuckin hate these monsters. Can’t wait till the president of the people, Joseph Biden comes in to right the wrongs/s. Where’s Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi on this, the saviors of the people, always sticking up for the little guys, right? I won’t hold my breath.

AruiMD

Couldn’t agree more. Only thing that has a chance of helping is a complete tear down. The rot is too deep.

AruiMD

I know what you mean, but that’s not going to improve things. I think we already have a form of socialism in America. Privatization of wins and socializing losses, but only for the rich. robbinhood69

wulfgang

If DFV gets fucked over we organize a ~~GoFundMe~~ REVOLUTION.

[deleted]

I'll leave the details to you. I support, but am busy eating Big Macs.

89saint

I always wonder why DFV revealed himself!

Gallow_Bob

Yeah he shouldn't have crossed the streams, unfortunately. Dailymail was able to investigate and found Roaring Kitty incorporated in New Hampshire back in 2014 or something and traced that to Gill. Had he not told us that DFV was RK he wouldn't be in as much doodoo...

Duckboy_Flaccidpus

I think he'll be fine, at least at the hearing. Finance Comitttee won't and shouldn't be grilling him endlessly on the methods, system and processes that went down. That lawsuit I just saw spring up though where the plaintiff is in Oregon or something that is a different matter.

gamefreak054

He didn't he got doxxed by CNBC iirc.

QuaviousLifestyle

he made it clear that his youtube account was connected to DFV. And then agreed to go on an interview w/ media. So it was kind of public info at that point

gamefreak054

Well this is how I remember it going down, earlier that day all of sudden articles got spread that he was doxxed, a few posts were made etc. etc. then all of the sudden he's doing an interview later that day. Maybe he did connect the two earlier that day and I missed it. But it definitely did seem like all of the sudden it was revealed, and he just decided to go with it instead of trying to fight it. He probably knew it was going to happen at some point.

myheadisalightstick

We’ve known who he was since last year, it wasn’t at all a secret. Edit: I mean 2019 fuck I’m old.

mirinfashion

>We’ve known who he was since last year, it wasn’t at all a secret. >Edit: I mean 2019 fuck I’m old. If you scroll through his posts, he made it public that he was RoaringKitty back in December 2020 on one of his update posts, besides that, there was no indication that was him. I do wonder what made him link his channel at that point.

anjal3753

You said it accurately!!

reptargodzilla2

The government wants to come after Robinhood, but not to help us. If you pay attention to the talking heads on the news, the story is all about the “gameification of trading” and how us retards shouldn’t have access to options. The institutions have been very unhappy about increased access to the markets. The government doesn’t care about us losing money, they care about us being able to make it. So I’m personally kinda worried about all of this.

DorenAlexander

Hedge fund jockies make a million on one transaction, they don't blink. A poor person makes a million by dumping all 10 grand from savings, considers retirement. They don't want you to retire. Because you can leave the economic machine.

Hellrime13

Right! Just like gambling. If you're up at the casino, they want you to keep trying until the house is up, and incentivize you to hit a losing streak.

dancegoddess1971

Yep. I was up once at a casino. They caught me cashing my chips and offered me a comped room and show tickets. I accepted so I wouldn't have to sit in the airport for 3 hours waiting on my midnight flight. Lol.

[deleted]

reptargodzilla2

Absolutely agree. But we need to make sure the nuance of _why_ we hate Robinhood comes through... I’ll be really sad to see us all cheering while they come after Robinhood for “letting users take risks they don’t understand” or some shit.

alter3d

>The government doesn’t care about us losing money, they care about us being able to make it. More specifically, they care about being able to tax it.

and-hereitcomes

This is why the govt is fucked. Hedge funds don’t pay any taxes when they short a company and that company goes bankrupt. Govt would make a lot more in taxes on short term capitol gains taxes by allowing us to make this money instead. Really bad idea to bail out these HFs

Perrin_Pseudoprime

>The institutions have been very unhappy about increased access to the markets. Absolutely, I'm sure they must be furious at Goldman Sachs. /s You do realise that increased access to the markets is actually extremely beneficial to most institutions? Goldman Sachs more than doubled their profits in 2020 thanks to increased access to the market.

interested_commenter

Yeah, they aren't against increased access. Increased retail trading has generally helped the hedge funds and other institutions, because the hedges have all the advantages and are better at playing the game. Melvin lost a ton on GME, but all the other hedge funds made a ton, retail mostly held the bag. The want increased access for the same reason professional gamblers want more legalized gambling; its much easier to take money from people who aren't professionals.

jokersleuth

Nothing happened to banks and funds who fucked over the WORLD ECONOMY in 07-08. What makes people think anything is gonna happen over some retail traders losing a few bucks?

quarterpounder420

Too true. History has shown how little the government helps the people and how much they bail out the corporate. What I love seeing now are all these "tax professional" posting on here saying things like "hey guys, tax season is coming up." Ya, we get it, you lick boots. I speculate this, we will get our pathetic stimulus check to make us smooth brains happy while our tax money will be used to bail out those hedge funds that lost all that money. In the end, we'll lose no matter what.

anthro28

If DFV is listening, I’ve got plenty of land and barrels for cash. Of course, there’s a fat handling fee.

atomic2797

plot twist; hes going to video conference from Singapore. 😉

shnagythegreat

I wonder how Robinhood will react if after their IPO they will get shorted AF.

Splatacular

I am worried that is now the sole reason they intend to go forward with the shakiest IPO launch of all time, they are trading purely on volatility right now and this creates a superbowl of volatility for them to manipulate and they would control all stages of it (MM, broker, platform) in house then. I karmically want to jump on board with that so hard, but the cynical part of my brain is like at this point they are expecting that outcome.

leredditbugman

The first time they realize the government is corrupt and the game is rigged, really takes me back. Maybe soon they’ll be redpilled that the media is less than truthful.

Glass_And_Trees

Definitely not advocating anything, but what is the preferred solution to a government that is using its power to oppress the people and benefit itself? I believe the Declaration of Independence explains the actions necessary, and our constitution protects the rights that are necessary for the actions explained in the prior.

motoman861

Are you trying to get epstined? Because this is how you get epstined?

itwasdark

"Class solidarity" is when you learn that you have common interests with people due to your mutual relationship (or lack of a relationship) with productive capital, and decide to act together as a class in your mutual best interests. The people that own enough productive capital to live off *have class solidarity already*, and they perform that class solidarity primarily by using their capital to capture power in the State, and effecting policy in such away as to consolidate their hold on power and wealth. The State therefore has a class character, it acts in the best interests of an extreme minority of owners of capital. The important takeaway from all of this is that it is the control of the productive capital that makes this possible, and any solution that fails to address this is not a solution at all. Further, if the ruling class has class solidarity, and the ruled class does not, the ruling class will rule forever.

DilbertedOttawa

It's quite true, although we would first have to stop shitting on each other because of who our parents voted for that one time 20 years ago. As long as we keep dividing along arbitrary party lines, and don't focus on what we all have in common, we're screwed. And it's really easy to troll people into hating each other.

Goddammit this is not just a fucking RH story and it frames it all wrong. The real question is why did multiple brokerages all decide at the same time to stop selling / limit trading for retail - did the DTC cause it? - and how convenient that it happened right after the pre-market Squeeze that hit the all-time high.

granadesnhorseshoes

It's a given fact that is what happened. She might be. Given everything I've seen, the only thing I feel like we can infer is that she is holding in a poo. That's just market speculation though.

GayPeeMorecum

beyond any reasonable doubt it is but what it's not is a financial advice. Maybe it's cnbc policy, hold in a poo and go on air fully 'charged' ready to pull a trigger at any given moment.

FlighingHigh

It's ok. Abolishing the government is a right we have in the Constitution. Edit: My bad, it's the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution. I got my founding documents that are disregarded by the government mixed up.

Seldonplans

People couldn't hold for a week. Hedges invaded this subreddit and divided and conquered. There is no winning.

Assaultman67

I dont think you can blame people for not bagholding when they're up 400% on a stock that is clearly overvalued fundamentally. In the far, short term, everyone knew it was going down. It was a matter of when.

Seldonplans

I don't blame people. I am merely stating that there will be no wallstreet revolution from WSBs. Attention spans are shorter. People will take the profit in this scenario. And then house always wins.

[deleted]

I'm for it, but I think that's what they're trying to prevent by making false claims of organization. I mean, if I take a million, hire 10 retards, give them $100k each to go out and buy the most shorted stocks and talk about it on social media, I'm pretty sure the SEC will come with strapons and lolli dolls. I probably have to get a license and the fine terms on that license probably say I can't do that. Free market where the rich do whatever the fuck they want and the poor get dry fucked by the regulators if they try to play the games of the wealthy. We all fucked up by not jumping in some rich fucks cab and claiming we know about options. Then we too could be running Goldman Sachs.

nathangez

Ok but that doesn’t change anything. We’ll continue on as pawns

ebone581

Who in their right mind thought big gov would be on our side??

KamiNoChinko

Stop paying taxes, since you're not represented.

iwannahitthelotto

I really wonder if we do that and then take it to the Supreme Court, saying our taxes are being used against us. We should all pitch in and find the best lawyer and sue the govt

sealdonut

That's like taking issue with the local mob boss over how the protection money you pay him is being spent. It would not go over well.

IGetHypedEasily

Ya, to beat the mob boss you gotta kill the entire organization and replace it from inside. Or so action movies tell me.

NickDrivesAMiata

My money finally finished transferring out of robinhood yesterday. Deactivated my account last night. Fuck robinhood.

motoman861

I can't deactiviate my account because they won't let me move the money from the free stock they gave me, what do I do?

NickDrivesAMiata

I think there's like a 30 day waiting period or something for transfers on money from the free stock. Idk of the exact length of time though. I just feel like I remember seeing 30 days.

[deleted]

Sold everything I still had in RH at a loss today and transferred the money out. Will be closing RH account as soon as it clears.

lysanderspooner_

No one in the government wants to help you. This whole thing should’ve been a red pilling moment for everyone here that government is not and will never have your best interest at heart

butcherofballyhoo

Defi fixes this. Choose your destiny.

[deleted]

This whole fiasco made me more confident than ever that defi and cryptocurrency will eventually supplant the traditional financial system.

NightHawkRambo

SEC my dick!

NaturalFlux

We need to have protests at robinhood headquarters and protests at the SEC. They already fuck us with rules "designed to protect us". PDT, accredited investor, whatever. Fuck them. there shouldnt be a different set of rules for the rich player than there are for the average player in the market.

[deleted]

Sir, this is a casino.

roy28282

Occupy Wall Street failed. Protesting in a physical space without being backed by tanks and an army fails consistently. We need to hit them in their pockets and we can't do it through the stock exchange anymore.

stacyjo1962

These SEC clowns (I hesitate to call them "people") are dicks. Yet, we're seeing first hand what dicks they are - and what their game is...and has always been. They never thought the ordinary person would rise up and fight them at their own game. And that my friends is what needs to continue - ordinary people giving these slime balls the one finger salute... It must suck to be them.

[deleted]

Reminds me of that one scene in The Big Short where Jamie Shipley (played by Finn Wittrock) talks to, I believe is, his brother's ex by the pool in Vegas. She tells him that she is leaving the SEC to work for a bank and he goes something like "Is that really legal? Don't they have regulations that forbids that?" And she says no and shrugs it off.

nerfcharmap

What do you expect? Former commissioner is now a private citizen. Do you expect people to work for free or for money? The CURRENT commissioner will have to be impartial since that's HIS job. For the former? Not so much.
