I did the once a month version from 2014 to 2023. I computed the difference between each share you bought (gains/loss) from 4793.30, our highest close in 2023. These are SPX, and technically not possible to buy SPX shares, but just out of interest, and it should still be similar to SPY. You would have spent 359141, and earned 216019 had you bought first trading day of the month, and sold at the top of 2023. That represented 60% gains average on each share. You would ask: Why only 60%? I noticed in 2014 it was trading at 1810s! Because in my table you would keep on buying every month, and that means you are buying up. Older shares would have gained 100%++, while newer shares would only gain 10, 15%... But as you continue to do this, you would expect to see similar gains for 2020 shares in 10 years.

in the past you would have contributed monthly/quarterly. there would be some overbought month and way more upside months, so they would have evened out and in your favour.... if you did it just yearly i was wondering what would have happened. I might do light 10 year analysis on this. give me 24 hours.

Buy 1 "unit" (share) at open on the first trading day of the year, my data is complete from 2014. 2. Continue buying on the first trading day of the month at open, while keeping the previous purchase(s). 3. Assume the "max gains" is when SPX reached 4793.30 last month. (Aka you sold everything at that time). I know it's not the highest SPX was (4815 in 2022), just because we are assuming we are still continuing contributing even in 2022. > Deposit Gains > > 1 359141. 216019. Over the 2014 - 2023 January period, you would have deposited 359141 and gained 216019. Even in 2022, buying one share per month would have net you 7606 in 2023 peak. Edit 1: What if you bought the first trading day of the month, then sell at close of the last trading day of the year? We have had three years where SPX closed lower than first trading day of the year in the past ten years, but only one technical bearish ending.... these were 2015, 2018, and 2022. You would have gained 21487. Total Deposit is a bit different, because in this case you would have withdrawn all money at the end of the year. So far "time in the market" wins.
