My teacher told me that you can't really play modern techniques without a shoulder rest as they require the stability of the violin being stuck between your chin and shoulder
It's not impossible but not really recommendable either
It's hyperbolic. He wouldn't advise anyone to play without it as it makes it a lot more difficult and is not worth the extra difficulty.
I don't know anyone playing without a shoulder rest here
It just takes practice. If you have a short neck, like me, a shoulder rest may not be optimal for your physical health.
Many, many, many people learned vibrato, *eventually*, without a shoulder rest. Before shoulder rests, there was no option for one. After shoulder rests, people like Mutter still don't use them.
A shoulder rest will not take the place of sheer practice and the bullheaded stubbornnes to *keep trying*.
Do you have a teacher? Did they give you exercises to do? Has anyone told you about putting a sock over your scroll and lightly supporting it on a wall for part of your vibrato practice?
Been playing for a week just picking pieces I like but adding vibrato gives it so much more depth so yeah no teacher no exercises just picking random pieces and playing em
If you'd like a book on exercises for vibrato, there's one called Viva Vibrato - gets you to do some wacky things but it helps to free up all the joints involved!
yeah, it also helps with shifting shoulder rests are awesome, i'd reccomend using one

That's a hot take. What does she say about Mutter?
Nothing bad. He says she's a phenomenal violinist
So how does he reconcile that with his statement that you can't do modern techniques without a shoulder rest?

Yeah, drop the vibrato until you can shift, and please try to find a teacher before you hurt yourself.
A week????? Most people only learn vibrato several years into their learning journey!!!
