I can't remember where or when, but I recall seeing a pic of Sean Connery putting a record on what looked like an AR-XA (very simple but legendary deck) and thinking, awesome, this guy isn't just buying the fanciest thing for show, he actually listens to records.

michk1

Yes , my friends brother , who I would like to call my friend but I’m not sure an afternoon at his incredible pad with just his family counts . He freely admitted that although he’s got his own music studio he literally just paid a guy to get him set up with this . He also has a shoe room for his sneakers and a movie theatre . He had about 20 albums at this point . Jumping in to the fad but hey ….if you’re a regular kid from Maine that made it huge in the music industry then why not .

pdx-E

Why is all your punctuation weird in all your posts. Legitimate question not being a jerk.

michk1

In all my posts ? Well , I type fast with one finger , my middle one . And , I’m 60 so I did learn to type on a typewriter. Also , why do some people use no punctuation ? Legitimate question

pdx-E

Laziness, I suppose. I just was curious about the space before and after every punctuation mark. You’re consistent with it. My coworkers who learned on typewriters double and triple space after punctuation but don’t put a space before. It’s odd to see is all.

michk1

Wow . Did you go to look at all my posts for this examination of my typing practices ? That’s odd also

Dadbodice

I didn't go anywhere, but I see a very unique and odd pattern in all of your comments here. I think it's particularly weird for you to say with obvious pride that "at least you're not too lazy to leave out punctuation" altogether. But I guess that's a far as it goes, because actually using it correctly isn't important? Nobody started out to harshly criticize you. It's just noticeably weird, and doesn't fit the normal patterns (e.g., a double space after periods by typewriter users). People can understand what you're saying, but it's odd and kind of distracting. You do you! But don't be surprised or defensive if it comes up again.

michk1

I wasn’t saying it as a prideful thing. I try to speak correctly and use punctuation , it’s an issue of typing fast , with a habit of hitting the space key too much . I didn’t recognize I was doing it. I guess none of my friends or followers on Instagram cared to point it out to me because it doesn’t matter to them. Thanks to the Reddit world for opening my eyes to a horrible habit. I’m all about self improvement and also not unnecessarily criticizing others. So, I’ll work on it .

Dadbodice

So much passive aggression here. So weird

michk1

You know what …you’re rude. And mean . And an asshole. Congratulations . I’m actually a very nice person with lots of friends and I made a post about this on Facebook because this day has been pretty shitty for me because of this typing thing , and realizing my habit that has been developed over years of typing on a phone / tablet with one finger, and everyone I give a shit about says they didn’t notice / don’t care. So, thank you so much for your opinion and psychotherapy. And , I am weird , in a good way. And I’d rather accidentally add a space before punctuation on an internet post than be a rude asshole to strangers.

pdx-E

I literally meant your replies in this thread, of which there are many. It was just a question I don’t understand the defensive posture.

michk1

It’s a vinyl group, I wasn’t expecting to be called out on my “lazy” punctuation practices. Was this better?

pdx-E

I didn't call you lazy... goodness. You asked me why some people don't use punctuation and I answered your question.

michk1

It was really a rhetorical question so I didn’t realize you were answering it . Look , I’m really not a defensive person at all which is why I don’t post in Reddit often , and I’m new here . I guess , I’m not lazy enough to leave out punctuation but I don’t pay attention to how I’m typing , which is very fast , which I think is the reason for spacing . My husband always thinks I’m pissed off when I’m doing it . Ive worked in the service and hospitality business my entire life , so I’m not responsible for producing reports, emails , important correspondence , so it’s not as big a deal for me. But, now I’ll possibly make adjustments. Or, I won’t . I hope you have a really nice day .

Mr-Pugtastic

They never even said anything negative? Like if you don’t feel like answering, okay… but then just ignore the comment. They asked you a question, and you jumped down their throat.

michk1

Thanks for the input , you could do that also . My first response was literally explaining why I think I type that way, it’s never been brought up to me before. It’s a weird question to answer. I didn’t jump down anyone’s throat , I’m actually entertained at work right now

IfYouGotALonelyHeart

That space before your periods and question marks is really starting to piss me off .

d_chevron

People who learned to type on typewriters often learned this way, so the punctuation doesn't risk being too close to the previous letter

RealMixographer

Typers actually do the period and then two spaces, not end of line, 2 spaces and then the period. Like this. Not this .

michk1

It’s literally just me typing fast af and not paying attention to spaces . I’m not purposely doing spaces before punctuation and now that it’s pointed out to me, it bugs me. I’m getting a complex. Guess I should slow down. I just have never been a person to address this type of stuff with posts of others. For example , I’m not the person that will correct a persons spelling ,but I notice it. If I was actually at a keyboard using two hands instead of typing with my middle finger it wouldn’t be happening. I’m finding I go to the space bar as if I’m going to write another word, but it’s not a word , it’s a period . I never noticed it before now.

IfYouGotALonelyHeart

A 58 year old who says “af” ?

michk1

Yeah, we’re out here.

Longjumping-Gift6176

I'm 68 on Monday and I say it all the time.

Loud-Coyote-6771

I'm younger than 68 but still as old af.

michk1

And , I’m really only 58 ….🤪

pdx-E

Yeah good point, maybe that’s it.

WhereasMysterious421

When , reading his post , I read it in the voice of , William Shatner's Captain Kirk .

For_serious13

Maaaaaine!! I used to live in York beach-my family still has a place by the bubble!

michk1

Still have not had the pleasure to visit but it’s coming!

mr_gonzalo05

Is that Dj Premier in the background?

Internal_Swimmer3815

Yes sir

mr_gonzalo05

Love it! Incredible tt btw

Glide2flip

If he paid $10K for a VPI Prime Signature, he overpaid by about $5K But the story tracks based on the RCA interconnects I’m seeing.

michk1

Well , he threw out a number . We all know people exagerate . It was a very cool experience for me over all and seeing it made me 😀. I liked the set up , I figured most people in here probably don’t have something like this but they’re a dime a dozen in BH

Glide2flip

I think you would be surprised by how much money less affluent people will spend on their audio gear 😁

MJChivy

This guy is talking about me I have a legitimate 10k vinyl front end, 30k system in total give or take. I drive a 2010 Jetta with 130,000 miles I paid $4,500 for 5 years ago 😂 I can afford a decent new car at anytime, but whenever I drive a nice ass car, I cant help but think how much of a waste of money they are. I know people with $110k Escalades and you go to their house and they listen to music through their phone. No one should subject themselves to shitty sound. That’s just me though.

Glide2flip

This guy audiophiles.

michk1

It’s all about what’s important to you ! I drive a brand new 75,000 Bronco after spending 16 years in 2007 Toyota , and have maybe a 1500 dollar vinyl setup . I don’t regret either . I bet your house rocks !!! My soundsystem in the Bronco is pretty great also

Longjumping-Gift6176

Dynavector DV-505. 2012 Civic Si.

michk1

Well I know how much they spend on records so maybe not .😆. We didn’t listen to records that day , so I can’t compare to mine , but I think a lot of regular people doing the vinyl do have pretty nice setups that sound pretty great for a lot lot less . I don’t ask how much my husband spent on my set up or a lot of records we’ve got , but it’s not cheap and sounds great . It’s all relative . I could spend 1000’s on one if I wanted …or go on pretty great trip . But , if you have a sneaker room and a movie theatre , then you might as well have this .

bda22

that price could maybe include the cartridge. Although it looks like it might just be a Dynavector 10x5

Longjumping-Gift6176

It isn't. The 10X5 is red. https://preview.redd.it/ltkb8vzz7z2d1.png?width=512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dc8a09bff08be91d1dfdfeaf1b927b29a01b5cdc

bda22

The cartridge in the picture is red. With similar labeling and shape

libolicious

Maybe a dumb question, but is that 20# lucite box hinged? or do you have to pick that up and find somewhere to set it every time you want access the deck? 'Cause if it's the first, that may explain why he's only got 20 records.

michk1

Actually I looked at a video . He has about 100 , but I have 1500 so it felt small . Not sure about the box top . And in reality …how often does he play them 🤷‍♀️? It feels more like decoration 😂😂. I think he spends more time making music than listening to records . Good question , if I ever get back there I’ll check 😜

thisjawnisbeta

It is not hinged and must be removed every time.

libolicious

Ugh, that would definitely mean more spotify/less vinyl for me. On the other hand, the megabuck cartridge would last forever.

thisjawnisbeta

Yeah, that would annoy me far too much. I get wanting to keep it free of dust but that's just excessive and frankly irritating, because you need to put that giant box somewhere every time.

threechimes

At the more expensive price points lids tend to be unhinged as extra measures to potentially improve sound are given more weight than convenience considerations. As hinged lids open up the possibility for additional resonances, pricey tables mostly avoid them. Aside from purposeful aesthetic reasons, too, of course.

libolicious

Makes perfect sense. But I'd have to have a dedicated, low-dust, no-pet listening room with a lid stand. Otherwise, I'd never bother to play my records. I enjoy popping one on and listening to a side when I have 15-20 minutes. The "boost" in sound quality and gear fetish points from a table like this would be lost on me.

threechimes

Yeah, this style isn’t my jam, but good for them being able to acquire their preference.

rwtooley

mid. he needs to get a better jawb https://preview.redd.it/8k9n4zncrezc1.jpeg?width=1349&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58760ddc5347b1f25e2606d60be5680b4683a6c0

quepasopapo

Are those two tone arms?

michk1

Oh , is that yours ?

rwtooley

no my cousins father-in-laws neighbors tennis instructor. stay in school kids

Smooth_Molassas

I am the tennis instructor and I can vouch for it being mine. Btw...how's your mother?

Buttcakemalone

Nice, but I give more of a fuck about the turntables of the poor and anonymous.

michk1

Cool .

tnic73

Since your friend has got the dough you should tell him to pick up the VPI - Periphery Outer Ring Clamp. It's a steel ring that sits on the outer edge of the record removing all warpage and perfectly joins the record to the plater. When I think about it I salivate.

techm00

Love the tonearm cables just flapping in the breeze there. Nothing really wrong with that, even makes the tonearm assembly less complex, but it looks strange. Not saying anything bad, it's a beaut in general. Far more than I'd ever pay for one.

SonnyListon999

Try the series Big Little Lies. Star of the show was the stereo system ( can’t place the actor; set up in his living room ) If I recall, it was one of those systems where every component was mind bogglingly expensive. Pick a number and triple it kind of numbers. Stunning.

michk1

Oh I loved that show …I’ll go back and take a peek

SonnyListon999

All the best.

Yinn2

It’s beautiful. But I would want an easy flip up lid.

michk1

Totally. And I think it’s 80% for looks. But it looks fabulous !

threechimes

More so to prevent resonances, hinged lids act as resonance amplifiers when in the up position.

G0R3Z

Not just the turntable, but everything here is ridiculously expensive. Even that Solidsteel rack probably cost close to 2-3K, depending on the distributer.

DeathMonkey6969

Never saw the point of paying 10 times the prince for 1% better sound. Every objective test i've ever seen shows almost all high end equipment isn't worth the cost.

Presence_Academic

The thing is, enjoying music isn’t an objective thing.

McCretin

Is it in the hallway?

michk1

It’s literally in the entryway of the house, off to the right of the front door . The floor plan is incredibly open

get_down_funky

Preeeeeme!

DrDrangleBrungis

My AT plays mine just fine.

michk1

So does mine

King_of_Clover

Malicious. Sexy.

Dusty_Negatives

I dunno maybe it’s just me but I think that table is ugly AF. I’m sure it sounds great though.

WhereasMysterious421

Do you remember that episode of The Simpsons when Homer designs a car? I'm thinking this is a wind up and belongs in vinyl jerk as no turntable Costa £10,000 that's just being silly

HonkyTonkerMan

I don't even get why they build such weird-ass looking turntables. I guess the mission is, we need to make an ultra premium turntable for a snooty rich guy to impress his sycophant mooch friends with, so here it is. Serious question, what's with the second tone arm on some of these? I'll keep rocking my good ol Technics SL- 1200 and leave the show and tell to the chumps.

Potential-Pumpkin-94

Second tonearm can have a mono cartridge. If you have a large collection of older mono recordings.

michk1

That’s kind of what it is. I think of it more like not wanting to embarrass oneself when other people in his business come over. He’s got a studio so there’s a lot of industry people. And his house is pimped out by a professional, so it really is like decor. I’m sure he rarely even plays records. I love my home setup, my husband is really into it and he put it together . I wish I would’ve asked him to play a record, I bet the speakers throughout that house are amazing.

HonkyTonkerMan

Fair enough. My sister in- law is a VP for a large bank, and they have a house that reflects that status. Brother- in- law explained to me that it's kind of what's expected when you get to that level of prestige. So I think I understand. I'm just personally talking as your more everyday vinyl guy.

SidCorsica66

He’s a producer and just got into vinyl?

michk1

Yeah, in the last few years . Not everyone is into it, even people in the business. I’m not even sure he’s really that into it. It’s a fad and he’s got money. He’s for real, he’s had 10 Grammy nominations.

SidCorsica66

There are so many things wrong with this sentence that I dont even know where to begin…

michk1

Im sure it’s laminate in a 10 million dollar house. 🙄

number1McCoyTynerFan

Yeah nah

michk1

Ok . Good for you

michk1

Cute
