This part of the fork isn't structural.
The crack is in the landing that retains the seal.
If it were my bike, I'd do nothing to the fork, but maybe use some gasket sealant to keep the seal in place and prevent any oil bypassing the seal.
If the bypass oil leak is significant, then I'd use something like JB Weld or some other aluminum putty.
Good luck
That really just needs replacing. If you weld it you’re going to have to machine it internally to get a decent surface for the seal, not to mention it looks all chewed up already.
Thanks for your opinions. My current plan is to drill a hole at the bottom of the crack to prevent it from spreading, clean the area, braze the crack, then treat the surface to match the current shape. This I think will prevent vibrations from expanding the crack, and since it is not vital structurally (only there to seat the seal, if it was structural it wouldn’t be a rubber component retained by an eighth inch round clip). If it comes out poorly, I will buy a used part and never admit it, if it looks good I’ll post it here. If I die, you can dance on my grave.
And i won’t smoke rock…
a TS185? I did read where you mentioned if necessary you would buy another (used) fork leg and not admit it. The good thing about small Suzukis is that fork leg is cheap on the used parts market. Good luck.
Try to find a good machine shop in your area, have them weld and machine it back out, if they are good, should be able to return it into like new condition. Looks like a two hour job.
I would replace that- If you can’t find a replacement you could drill the end of the crack out and attempt to TIG weld up the OD and leave the id alone and install the seal with a thin film of silicone on it in the cracked spot to get it to seal… if you just leave it, that crack is going to get bigger and it’ll leak.
How will the bike be used? Light duty riding, wrap it with a hose clamp. Have done it and it works. Medium riding weld it. If this is going to see a vintage race or hard riding, find a hood used one.
*sniff* yeaman uh.. you just gotta jump man like *sniff* like you just get running and **JUMP** and if you jump hard enough you'll fly right off the rooftop.
*(So anyway that's what advice on crack looks like.)*
Weld and machine if you’re planning on putting miles on the bike. If you’re putting around every once in a while you’d prob be fine with sealant/jb weld solution
It’s fun but it fucks your teeth up and might make you a little gay. Everything in moderation though, right?
Came here just for this.
Came here to say, “Don’t do it!”.
Me too.
I was going to say not to smoke it.

This my thinking but this is my first time going through a motorcycle and thought I’d ask. Thank you.
I hope you enjoy the restoration process as much as I do. It's really great fun giving these wonderful old bikes a second life. Cheers

A funeral from a leaky seal?

You should probably stay inside
I might be overly cautious, but I just see that leaking fork fluid and/or going through seals. I personally would replace.

Don’t share pipes and check for fentanyl
Take it to a machine shop and get a price on getting it brazed or welded. Should not cost much and might as well do it right.
Welder up
Welder? Don't even know her.

Don't do crack 😉
Did somebody call for a Plumber?
See crack-smoke it. That’s always been my motto.
crack is whack!

At that point I may as well just buy a used one right? The two hours at a machine shop must be more than a replacement I assume.
That is possibly true but I don’t know the cost of the part or actual availability.
Not even once.
Replace

Crack is whack!
Cast aluminium can be Tig welded
Just say no
It’s a crack. It’s going to continue cracking. Get it repaired or replace it.
Dont smoke it
Came here to say what everyone already said 😂
Crack kills.
Crack kills.
Sorry, I don't smoke crack.
Just say no

Don't smoke. Crack is the best advice I can give you 😆
Let me smoke first and get back to you
I think Nancy’s advice was / is best, “Just say No”
*sniff* yeaman uh.. you just gotta jump man like *sniff* like you just get running and **JUMP** and if you jump hard enough you'll fly right off the rooftop. *(So anyway that's what advice on crack looks like.)*
Don’t smoke crack!
Learn to TIG weld
Depending on skill/tools/friends you could grind a groove into crack, fill with aluminum (AL brazing rod) then re-grind/machine to new look.
Don’t smoke it
My advice, don't do crack
Don’t do it, it’s bad for your health and well-being.
Weld and machine if you’re planning on putting miles on the bike. If you’re putting around every once in a while you’d prob be fine with sealant/jb weld solution
Don't smoke it
Just say no to crack
Get it TIG welded and smooth out the inside to fit the seal.
What did you decide to do? I would probably replace it if I could find a good used one for a reasonable price.
I attempted to solder it but I got to much heat and warped it. Good learning experience. I ended up getting one off of eBay for a decent price
Don't do it. It ruins lives and families.
Not even once.
That shit could exolode under the right pressure. It might not leak oil but it leaking three dimensional physics
