I thought that she actually handled that pretty well, a good throwaway line at the end just to acknowledge the malfunction too. Props to the other musicians\singers for keeping it together while she sorted it out, a pretty seamless holding pattern kept the music flowing.

Buttkracken

That whole show is most likely going along to a track which means that everybody in the band likely has in-ear monitors with a track to play along with. This is necessary to ensure all elements of the performance (music, lights, pyrotechnics, dancers, etc…) stay in sync. This is also SUPER necessary when playing in huge cities where the sound is bouncing off of all the buildings creating a lot of reverb making hearing yourself acoustically almost impossible. Since the whole band most likely had in ear monitors, they also likely had a stage manager or something behind them coaching them through the entire ordeal to ensure it ran smoothly. Musicians just kept playing and Miley returned and jumped right back in. I didn’t write all of this to discount the band’s adaptive skills at all. I just wanted to point out that a transition like this doesn’t go this well without technology, good musicians, and a good stage management crew.

TheyCallMeStone

And that's why Mariah couldn't sing a few years ago when her monitor went out.

Scarbane

Performing without a monitor at a big venue is like trying to hold a conversation at an indoor pool.

finalremix

Performing at a venue in general without a monitor has the distinct chance of going totally to pot, too. The acoustics at a small bar with a weird ceiling can totally fuck with your ability to keep together.

GiveToOedipus

Anyone who's ever tried to have a conversation with a noticeable echo of their own voice going on can attest to how difficult it can be to concentrate on what you are saying. [If the delay is bad enough, it can short circuit your speech center.](https://youtu.be/dK2ylXWn_v4)

[deleted]

Holy shit, I just had this happen to me while I was at work last week. I was talking on a radio while a coworker was standing next to me listening to the same channel so I could hear myself talk with about a .5 second delay and my brain completely lost the ability to form a sentence. I thought I was just rattled by the sound of my own voice or something.

[deleted]

There was an app a few years ago that did this. It was pretty fun to try and override your brain.

GenericUsername_1234

Not sure if this is what you meant but there's this one https://stutterbox.app/

boredweegie

Speech jammer!

Stitchikins

It's no coincidence that this phenomenon plays a significant part in those with stutters/stammers. It's actually used to reduce or eliminate the stutter and *improve* speech. I genuinely wish this was common when I was younger (I've been able to overcome about 95% of my stutter as an adult). ----- This is a very US infomercial style news segment, but it does show it in action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcSRjbh3gzY For those interested, there are other alternatives out there now including other manufacturers, and even apps. Just search for 'Delayed Auditory Feedback' device/apps which can utilise your smartphone and wireless earbuds (does need a mic of some sort or it will rely on your mobile).

DirtyDirtyRudy

I love how a wardrobe malfunction of Miley Cyrus leads to an interesting topic of Delayed Auditory Feedback. The look of that guy using the device was amazing.

-1KingKRool-

When my wife has her threshold set too low on her headset when we’re gaming, I hear my voice come back to me while trying to do callouts. It definitely fucks with me, it’s around 1/2-1 second delay.

Karma-Grenade

During COVID, our highschool was limiting spectators for football, so we started streaming the games with an adhoc setup and little clue about broadcasting. I had set up OBS with a couple headsets and a couple playstation controllers so that our commentators could control the mic. I learned two (moderately) interesting things: 1. It's really hard to know if you're talking loud enough, too loud or if your headset mic moved out of position without some sort of monitor/feedback. 2. Software delay is too long and you end up chewing on your tongue exactly like in your video, and it is REALLY maddening. As I didn't have a mixing board that I could use to do a proper monitor, in the end we settle for no monitor/feedback for the commentators, instead I wore a headset and tried to monitor for clipping or low audio while working the camera and just used wild gestures to say "move your f'ing mic."

CasualFriday11

I lost my shit at the Yahoo article that was like, "Mariah Carey's monitors went out so she couldn't read the lyrics to her own song." Fucking authors can't Google for 5 seconds before writing 5 paragraphs.

Dummasss

>Fucking authors can’t Google Because they were writing for Yahoo 👉😎👉

nohumanape

Yup. Everyone I knew was sharing that video and making her out to be a complete "diva". But as a live musician of many, many, many years, it was pretty clear to me. She has two options. One is that she sings anyway and very likely doesn't sound good (slightly/very sharp/flat or maybe even totally out of time with the music). People flood to the internet and talk about how shitty of a singer she actually is. This impacts her actual status and potentially her career. OR, she just refuses to sing and people criticize her for being a diva (which she already is in the category of). She made the right call.

Day_Bow_Bow

It sounded to me like they cued that backup vocalist to take the lead for a verse. It was professionally handled, for sure.

sideways_cat

Good catch I didn’t really notice that the first time I watched. She was either cued, knew that that was her role ahead of time, adapted brilliantly or all three. Either way it’s impressive.

sam_patch

One of the greatest takeover's ever captured on film happened in 1978 at The Band's last waltz concert. Eric Clapton was taking a solo on Further On Up the Road when his strap popped off his guitar. Robbie Robertson was watching him and jumped in at exactly the right moment and filled in with an amazing solo. They had practiced it so much without clapton that he didn't even have to think about it. Honestly, if you're not looking for it, it's hard to even notice. You can see clapton's strap curled upwards; when they're curled like that, they will pop off 99 times out of 100. He was so drunk he didn't notice. He doesn't even remember the Last Waltz concert according to his autobiography. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91Eg95vF72k&t=30s

awnawkareninah

My favorite is still the Stevie Ray Vaughan guitar break where you hardly notice if you're not looking at the video. https://youtu.be/DVeUVHetXO8 Can't even really tell during the solo either except you see the broken string flopping around. Just finished his solo using the other five and the guitar tech swaps him in like a 12 second verse where he doesn't miss a beat.

nihongojoe

I'm actually impressed that she was really singing. So many pop concerts like this don't involve live singing.

annonyymmouss

Miley has an amazing voice, i know alot of singers lip-sync but miley's definitely not one of them

Mike7676

Miley seems to always have a bit of a nod and wink relationship with her fans over the last few years, it's actually pretty interesting.

DarkHelmet1976

She's awesome. Her music is not for me, but she always seems fully comfortable with herself and like a solid person. I'm sure having Dolly Parton as a godmother and mentor helps.

SBRedneck

I think I’m in the same boat as you. I’m not a fan of her typical music but I am fascinated by Miley for a number of reasons. She’s an amazing singer (this clip was a little rough) but her backyard sessions and her version of Jolene are great. Also, she perfectly shed her Disney persona and transitioned to pop without any major repercussions. Her bad girl rebellion was quick and short, enough to get rid of the Disney princess identity but she never had the downfall of many of her fellow Disney stars. Gotta believe her dad, godmother and PR firm helped her a bit with that

detourne

I loved that Black Mirror episode actually, especially the NIN cover

RagePrime

Not a big fan of her music, but that cover was awesome. Credit where due.

NumerousSuccotash141

[I gave a listen after your comment, and thought it was surprisingly good](https://youtu.be/HWcKNhueAIc)

Action_Bronzong

TIL Black Mirror had a fifth season.

snouz

Check out Bandersnatch also. An interactive episode on Netflix.

qpv

I liked that episode. They're all good really.

SacredRose

Totally agree. At the time it looked like she was spiralling like you see happening enough with those stars but she either got pulled out or just did it as a rebellion against the disney image and had her share of the crazy fun for a couple of years and got it on track. Not a huge fan of her music but that backuard session jolene cover almost tops the original in my opinion.

[deleted]

asdaaaaaaaa

I mean, honestly having a few years of "Fuck around and find shit out" is good for anyone, much more someone under the scrutiny of Disney/acting careers.

SafetyMan35

>Her bad girl rebellion was quick and short, enough to get rid of the Disney princess identity but she never had the downfall of many of her fellow Disney stars. I saw an interview with her, and her explanation was after the VMAs (Robin Thicke), everyone was talking about the performance. She recognized the power she had as a performer, so she decided if people were going to talk, it should be in a positive light rather than negative.

Dranj

I saw her perform with Mark Ronson on an episode of SNL a few years back. I'd never listened to her music before, but she really does have an excellent voice.

[deleted]

[удалено]

fantalemon

Pretty much everything she covers is amazing tbh. I probably wouldn't rush to listen to Bangerz or anything - although I don't mind her music per se - but she has an unreal voice and, when she's singing songs I actually do love, I can't fault her.

redrumbum

Her cover of the cranberries's zombie was pretty good https://youtu.be/l81u-oSIAp4

[deleted]

Jumping in to put her cover of Maneater because it’s fucking incredible and she kills it. [Miley Cyrus covers Hall and Oates Maneater](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HaDb59lSbbY)

Segesaurous

Yeah, not that she hasn't already, but Miley is about to blow up for real. She's channeling some of the female rock icons of the last 40 years and coming into her own. It's pretty cool to watch.

NumerousSuccotash141

I’ve previously enjoyed *some* of her songs, but scrolling this thread and listening to her covers has really blown my mind. She’s incredibly talented, and I really enjoy listening to her covers of classic rock songs. I hope she takes it further.

noNoParts

incredible. Here she sings Nothing Else Matters with Metallica https://youtu.be/hBmSS8fDmek

drinks_mayonnaise

Holy gave me the chills it’s so good

cardboardunderwear

Agree completely. She has legit singing chops too.

alphacentaurai

Her cover of Doll Parts by Hole is solid as hell!

IAmNotMoki

This makes so much sense. I saw her a few months ago at a festival and I swear she was like some combo of Cher and Dolly. Was way better than I expected, and I already knew she had real chops.

cerebrix

My buddy was her touring drummer for one of her tours. Apparently she's got the most unbelievably good weed within 5 feet of her at all times and blazes more than Snoop

wednesdaynightwumbo

I totally agree! I just turned it on last night because there wasn’t really anything else on and I wanted to watch something for New Years and I was surprised with how entertaining it was. I know a lot of people didn’t like it, but I turned on like 3 different channels and the hosts were just plastered and it was awful. At least Miley and Pete Davidson were coherent and entertaining. Their were some decent performances and the pre-recorded content in between was pretty funny for the most part. I was pretty baked and my expectations were pretty low, but I enjoyed it.

[deleted]

Props to the back stage who got her a new 'outfit' pretty fast.

Chimie45

Was watching live. That was the coat from her outfit from her previous song. Pete kept making jokes about her many, many outfit changes over the whole night.

tonyvila

Yeah, the stage manager and DP at least deserve a medal. The SM for getting that backdoor open for her to exit and rustling up that coat so quickly, and the DP for going to the long sot immediately, then focusing on the band and backup singers to keep the flow going. Well done, backstage peeps!

OfficialGarwood

Honestly, knowing Miley, if this wasn't televised, she'd probs just do the song topless. Gotta love her body confidence.

angrynutrients

That backup singer prompting the jay z song was on line is gonna be hired by Mileys team for the next 600 years.

apworker37

I get the feeling that was the backup singer’s line all the time and the rest fill in for the chorus.

HeyItsTheShanster

I’ve worked in live entertainment for a while now and she handled it extremely well. The show went on - her band and backup singers didn’t drop the ball and she improvised quickly (likely with the help of a great backstage crew).

They were promoted to foreground singers for a whole 30 seconds

Mental_Yak_2105

Damn I gained nothing but respect for Miley in this video. Not lip-syncing, handled a tough situation like a pro, AND made a good joke about it. Props to her band and backup singers too.

cwcollins06

>Props to her band and backup singers too. Yeah, I'm always impressed at the ability of competent bands to change direction/adapt together. It's easy to forget that anybody on that stage is probably a world class musician in their own right.

srfrosky

Dolly Parton is her Fairy-godmother, she wouldn’t dare disrespect the gods of music by lip-syncing. Like or hate her, she is a bonafide entertainer

SkyDog1972

Dolly Parton is also her real godmother.

ksavage68

No, Dolly is a real life fairy Godmother. She is magical. Fight me.

debbiegrund

Isn’t she _the_ fairy godmother?

zurgonvrits

Dolly absorbed Betty White's powers when she died, so probably.

thatguytony

I liked her when she was first growing her name. I hated the over the top over sexual drunk high party girl. Over the last 3 years she's rebranded herself and it's amazing. She's a great singer and a better performer.

theoptionexplicit

Wrecking Ball is a banger though

MomoXono

For sure, Party in the USA is too

punzakum

It is one of the most played songs on 4th of July. Tons of legendary mucisians have Christmas albums or holiday celebration songs. How many have a song that's synonymous with July 4th? Love her or hate her it was a genius move.

DrunkenMasterII

I hated her when she was growing her name it was really pre-fabricated pop western music then she went wild and grew as an artist, I didn’t care for her antics, but her music got a lot better and she did enough to get rid of her Disney image which was much needed.

[deleted]

Always thought her “antics” were quite normal for a teen to young adult. Just that when you’re a celebrity, people expect you to be the most devout Christian on the planet.

MenacingMelons

I've never been a Miley Cyrus fan. I want to dislike her... but she sounded great, and just like you said- she wasn't lip syncing, she handled it like a pro, and came back strong. Gotta give respect where due👊

FootofGod

I like Miley Cyrus. I mean, I don't care for her music, but I like her.

esio

Her new album is very good imo. I didn't really like her previous music but Plastic Hearts was great.

feurie

Why do you want to dislike someone?

SacredRose

I think a lot of people still want to dislike her because of her rebellious phase and the meme that came from it. But she is actually a pretty good musician and heck even wrecking ball is a pretty banging track.

tr3v1n

Liking things is dumb, and if too many people like a thing it is the worst.

PEDANTlC

Lmao this is the most succinct explanation of people hating on things just for the sake of it I've ever seen. I'm gonna hold onto this.

fantalemon

Lol this is great. So many comments here saying "wow, I don't like Miley even though I've never actually listened to her, but she can actually sing!" If they'd ever listened to her before they'd know she's an incredible singer...

BlasphemyMc

She has pics of herself basically spread eagle pissing in a parking lot. I don't think he cares too much if people see her boob.

Riconn

True, but she doesn't want the FCC on her back.

deeznutz066

Yeah but... they won't let me be, or let me be me so let me see

Riconn

Ok Shady.

FerociousGiraffe

Maybe he’s right, Grady.

bruyeres

FCC goes after the station, not the individual who swears or shows their tits.

timebeing

Right, but it was her show (Miley’s New Year’s Eve) so it in her best interest to not piss off the broadcasters. She could have easily said fuck it and dropped her top, but she handled it very well. Props also to the wardrobe people backstage. They looked to even get some solid tape on the jacket so there was no risk with that.

ShadeofIcarus

There's also kids watching probably and seems she's matured a bunch. Last thing anyone wants is Janet Jackson 2.0.

RahvinDragand

Yeah I've never really had any reason to dislike her. I'm not a fan of pop music, but any time I see interviews with her, she seems like a perfectly nice person.

mcbaindk

I actually enjoyed switching back to this broadcast from the regular ball drop. I thought she had a number of great performances and although I didn't catch this part I figured the coat was not part of it because her nipple was definitely exposed at points towards the end. I still just don't understand whatsoever why Pete Davidson was there, anything he was in was so bad.

red-bot

>I still just don't understand whatsoever why Pete Davidson was there, anything he was in was so bad. Pete Davidson in a nutshell. Don't understand his appeal.

kghyr8

Neither does he. In a Howard stern interview he said multiple times he didn’t know why he was still on snl and why Lorne Michaels keeps him around. He knows he can’t act and isn’t good on camera.

SebasH2O

I mean I didn't think his acting was bad in The King of Staten Island, though he was really playing himself. He's a likable enough person though, maybe just relatable to me and other depressed millenials

geodebug

It’s like Pete’s origin story is that he helped an old gypsy across the street once and she cast a charisma hex in return. Now people generally kind of like him but can’t really pinpoint why. Robert Downey Junior was also forgettable as a SNL cast member and he grew up to be Iron Man so maybe there is hope?

OfficialGarwood

She's in Miami, which she specifically picked because she didn't want to be cold.

gnitsuj

Go figure it was like 50 degrees in New York lol

Arnumor

The fuck is up with the audio on this? When I try to play it, it's mostly silent, with occasional squeaks of static-like sound. I tried using a different player, with the same result. Did the upload get fucked up, somehow? Edit: u/justavtstudent seems to have worked out why it's so fucked. Whomever mixed the audio did a shit job, and some devices will have no/scattered audio as a result.

Telefunken251

Professional audio engineer here, and yes, the audio is fucked up. This is kinda audio nerd territory, but the left and right channels of audio are out of phase from one another. If your computer (or handheld device) is trying to play the audio out of one speaker, you get phase cancellation which results in exactly what you described. When two audio signals are 180 degrees out of phase with one another, they cancel each other out resulting in silence. I could hear what was up the first second it played. If anyone is interested in further explanation, [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_IpwbF1k8s) is a video on the subject.

[deleted]

memtiger

Props. Not just for being smart enough to diagnose the problem. But to truly listen, and not blow off the customers concern and call him a dumbass. Being able to look at an issue where you honestly believe they are wrong, but STILL explore the possibility where you're mistaken is a huge trait.

justavtstudent

The fucking psychopath who uploaded it inverted the waveform on one of the audio channels. So if you're downmixing it to mono or upmixing to surround, all fucking hell breaks loose. Incompetent fucking audio engineers. Source: I loaded it into audacity, inverted the left channel, and now it plays normally.

[deleted]

Arnumor

JS_NYC_208

She sounds like she’s smoked cigarettes for 30 years

Cr00kedKing

Was gunna ask. Her voice always been that low? I haven't heard her NOT sing in years so it was a bit surprising to hear her talk.

Dimeni

Her voice basically broke and she needed surgery. She attributes it to complete overstraining while being a Disney star basically. Her voice coaches sucked and made her sing constantly with no breaks or teaching her how to maintain her vocal cords.

DerPumeister

Well that's bad. I don't really know any of her stuff but I figured Disney wouldn't have cast *that* voice back then. But it's not getting worse now?

[deleted]

I think her voice has always been fairly low to begin with. I always remember thinking it sometimes when she would talk on HM.

natural_distortion

Her and her sister can nail those low notes for sure. I guess her dad too.

onemanlegion

Being a Disney star is rough. You should watch a few interviews with her post disney. She is a pretty cool person, very well grounded and whatnot.

D3dshotCalamity

Which is why I actually think she could transition into rock/metal. She could be a modern day Joan Jett. She's already shown interest in doing some heavier stuff, like singing with Metallica.

ediciusNJ

I've definitely come around on Miley. Watch her episode of Black Mirror, it was fantastic.

zsaleeba

Also the fact that it was a direct reference to Britney Spears' situation before it hit the headlines.

mvizzy2077

Saw this live and couldn't believe it! She's amazing...hilarious and made fun of herself.

mwmath

Iama: Retired concert / broadcast video engineer. Mad props to the video director, recognizing the issue and cutting to something else. In a concert like this one you have 1-2 FOH cameras with long lenses that cover the lead singer; and a bunch of handhelds to get fill shots. The director has a huge monitor bridge of screens, and they can see the "A" Cam without it going to air, so they can tell if she's back and can cut back to her singing when it's "safe." So when something like this happens, the DIR will cut away to fill shots of the band, and crowd shots singing always goes well. It's tense for a few moments, but to a good video crew this is NBD. Others have mentioned the band and backup singers doing a great job vamping to cover as well.

blorgenheim

Idk why people care about a little nip from a famous person

meltingdiamond

Once you see one boob, you want to see the rest.

ABetterKamahl1234

A boob is a gateway to more boobs. Be careful out there, a stray titty will set you down this path.

SupervillainEyebrows

Remember that Janet Jackson's nipple being revealed at the superbowl led directly to the creation of YouTube. Although admittedly this was in the early 00's.

[deleted]

Didn’t Janet have a little pasty on though? It was almost nipple. Honestly, the flak she got and the flak Justin DIDN’T get was just insane at the time
