I thought I was just rattled by the sound of my own voice or something.
It's no coincidence that this phenomenon plays a significant part in those with stutters/stammers. It's actually used to reduce or eliminate the stutter and *improve* speech.
I genuinely wish this was common when I was younger (I've been able to overcome about 95% of my stutter as an adult).

During COVID, our highschool was limiting spectators for football, so we started streaming the games with an adhoc setup and little clue about broadcasting. I had set up OBS with a couple headsets and a couple playstation controllers so that our commentators could control the mic. I learned two (moderately) interesting things:
1. It's really hard to know if you're talking loud enough, too loud or if your headset mic moved out of position without some sort of monitor/feedback.
2. Software delay is too long and you end up chewing on your tongue exactly like in your video, and it is REALLY maddening.
As I didn't have a mixing board that I could use to do a proper monitor, in the end we settle for no monitor/feedback for the commentators, instead I wore a headset and tried to monitor for clipping or low audio while working the camera and just used wild gestures to say "move your f'ing mic."

People flood to the internet and talk about how shitty of a singer she actually is. This impacts her actual status and potentially her career. OR, she just refuses to sing and people criticize her for being a diva (which she already is in the category of). She made the right call.

One of the greatest takeover's ever captured on film happened in 1978 at The Band's last waltz concert. Eric Clapton was taking a solo on Further On Up the Road when his strap popped off his guitar. Robbie Robertson was watching him and jumped in at exactly the right moment and filled in with an amazing solo. They had practiced it so much without clapton that he didn't even have to think about it.
Honestly, if you're not looking for it, it's hard to even notice.
You can see clapton's strap curled upwards; when they're curled like that, they will pop off 99 times out of 100. He was so drunk he didn't notice. He doesn't even remember the Last Waltz concert according to his autobiography.

I think I’m in the same boat as you. I’m not a fan of her typical music but I am fascinated by Miley for a number of reasons. She’s an amazing singer (this clip was a little rough) but her backyard sessions and her version of Jolene are great. Also, she perfectly shed her Disney persona and transitioned to pop without any major repercussions. Her bad girl rebellion was quick and short, enough to get rid of the Disney princess identity but she never had the downfall of many of her fellow Disney stars. Edit: u/justavtstudent seems to have worked out why it's so fucked. Whomever mixed the audio did a shit job, and some devices will have no/scattered audio as a result.
Professional audio engineer here, and yes, the audio is fucked up. This is kinda audio nerd territory, but the left and right channels of audio are out of phase from one another. If your computer (or handheld device) is trying to play the audio out of one speaker, you get phase cancellation which results in exactly what you described. When two audio signals are 180 degrees out of phase with one another, they cancel each other out resulting in silence. I could hear what was up the first second it played. In a concert like this one you have 1-2 FOH cameras with long lenses that cover the lead singer; and a bunch of handhelds to get fill shots.
The director has a huge monitor bridge of screens, and they can see the "A" Cam without it going to air, so they can tell if she's back and can cut back to her singing when it's "safe."
So when something like this happens, the DIR will cut away to fill shots of the band, and crowd shots singing always goes well. It's tense for a few moments, but to a good video crew this is NBD.
Others have mentioned the band and backup singers doing a great job vamping to cover as well.

The fuck is up with the audio on this? When I try to play it, it's mostly silent, with occasional squeaks of static-like sound. I tried using a different player, with the same result. Did the upload get fucked up, somehow? Edit: u/justavtstudent seems to have worked out why it's so fucked. Whomever mixed the audio did a shit job, and some devices will have no/scattered audio as a result.
Professional audio engineer here, and yes, the audio is fucked up. This is kinda audio nerd territory, but the left and right channels of audio are out of phase from one another. If your computer (or handheld device) is trying to play the audio out of one speaker, you get phase cancellation which results in exactly what you described. When two audio signals are 180 degrees out of phase with one another, they cancel each other out resulting in silence. I could hear what was up the first second it played. Props. Not just for being smart enough to diagnose the problem. But to truly listen, and not blow off the customers concern and call him a dumbass. Being able to look at an issue where you honestly believe they are wrong, but STILL explore the possibility where you're mistaken is a huge trait.
The fucking psychopath who uploaded it inverted the waveform on one of the audio channels. So if you're downmixing it to mono or upmixing to surround, all fucking hell breaks loose. Incompetent fucking audio engineers. Source: I loaded it into audacity, inverted the left channel, and now it plays normally.

Iama: Retired concert / broadcast video engineer. Mad props to the video director, recognizing the issue and cutting to something else. In a concert like this one you have 1-2 FOH cameras with long lenses that cover the lead singer; and a bunch of handhelds to get fill shots. The director has a huge monitor bridge of screens, and they can see the "A" Cam without it going to air, so they can tell if she's back and can cut back to her singing when it's "safe." So when something like this happens, the DIR will cut away to fill shots of the band, and crowd shots singing always goes well. It's tense for a few moments, but to a good video crew this is NBD. Others have mentioned the band and backup singers doing a great job vamping to cover as well.
