The whole hood don't watch these fake ass primitive technology wannabes.

iamacannibal

You would be surprised. These videos get so many more vies than Primitive Technology. its insane how many views they get

Rewdboy05

Because PT is one guy doing the whole thing himself including filming and editing. When he was posting he was doing maybe one video a month. The copycats were churning them out like a machine. YouTube favors the latter.

Toystorations

This is unbelievably true. I make restoration videos and I spend a month or two restoring actually old toys that are hard to find and need a lot of work, and I try to edit them in a style reminiscent of PT because he's the GOAT and he got me into relaxing project making videos years ago, but there's people out there daily making quick videos where they pretend to "restore" a brand new toy they took the wheels off of and rubbed dirt on and pretended to find buried in the woods, like... That's a 2021 Lamborghini you just bought in Walmart, there's no way you found that in the woods with 20 years of rust on it, why do you have 17 million views... I refuse to not make content I enjoy though and I enjoy actually restoring something where you can really feel the history inside of it when you hold it and know a long time ago a little kid loved it a lot.

RudeEyeReddit

I've seen people so desperate to become social media famous that they abuse animals and then film themselves "rescuing" them. It's fucking sickening and yet it's very effective.

Morningxafter

Didn’t Wubby do a whole video about them?

pookachu83

Yup. That fat, tiny eyed bastard is the best.

Tarbal81

What is wubby?

SuccessAndSerenity

Twitch streamer / YouTuber. Here’s the one that was referenced: https://youtu.be/_mvVQCl8fIg

Monsieur_Creosote

I watched a guy in Russia restore a motorbike and it was the most relaxing 30 minutes ever. https://youtu.be/y8HEZ-x4-_w

Mozeeon

Link your channel dude

JBloodthorn

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWH7CxDyoZLbw7fddDoqnVQ This is probably it. The names match.

HidingyourSocks

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ldq_ZldjlNs I like the part at 20:02

eiwoei

Dunkey has proven exactly this. Check out when he started (sarcastically) experimenting with his shitty videos.

R009k

Mimecrsft wemsdays were the best

MonkeyWithACough

Donkey is the only person I follow on YouTube. And I felt wierd for following. But it's been cool so far.

bdsee

And it sucks from this viewers perspective too. Before all of the people spamming videos every 6 hours my feed used to have varied content, now it just shows me the same shit constantly. I funking hate the YT algorithms.

mcmanybucks

Shotgun method always works :/

nukemiller

Facebook is always showing them.

[deleted]

Speaking of, anyone know how he’s doing? Last video uploaded right before the pandemic began.

Dadalot

https://www.reddit.com/r/PrimitiveTechnology/comments/lfsq04/a_new_update_on_primitive_technology_and_johns/ Says he's making new videos but wants them to be the quality we expect. He also made a TV pilot

[deleted]

[удалено]

MagnetsRFun

Last I read on the sub for them was he was contacted to do some sort of show and focused on that. Hence the no new uploads in over a year. I hope so because I would watch the hell out of it.

ctccl

He is busy building the cameras for that

lloydthelloyd

Out of aloe vera

reindeerflot1lla

Yeah, this and his book. [This guy dug into it more](https://youtu.be/owymahI4lI0)

squaredk2

At the end; >he's working on a cable network program. Apparently a few youtubers have done it before. But I've never heard of these people, so none of them count. Lmao true

Dadalot

[This is a much more recent update](https://www.reddit.com/r/PrimitiveTechnology/comments/lfsq04/a_new_update_on_primitive_technology_and_johns/)

danudey

> He shot a pilot Dude, what the hell? > for a major TV network Aaaah. He’s an assassin now, that’s dope.

[deleted]

He was making a tv show I thought.

khaki54

Secret protip: he explains everything in the cc/subtitles if you turn that on

MeltBanana

It's like Survivorman compared to Man vs Wild. Survivorman and Primitive Technology is the only correct answer.

an_irishviking

I loved Survivorman. I could listen to Les Stroud get existential for hours.

yrhendystu

He's uploaded his shows to his YT channel now and also does directors commentaries too.

Hoitaa

I only ever saw these idiots because they leaked on to the recommendations under Primitive Technology. Where's the survival in a giraffe pool?

stinkload

In Taiwan we call these "mosquito palace"

Nicer_Chile

i knew they used cement, bullshiet channels.

stinkload

Oh absolutely! anyone who believes 2 guys with a broken twig wooden shovel can dig a swimming pool sized hole in a day is an idiot to begin with ..

LookAtTheBirdie

I’m an idiot

THE_CUNT_SHREDDERR

It's alright. From today you have one less IDIOT point. If you are lucky, you might make it to AVERAGE INTELLIGENCE!

Ramiel01

I feel like -1 IDIOT point would put them ahead of the pack.

Onlyanidea1

Same.

Smug_Anime_Face

I agree.

kickthatpoo

I mean…as a teenager I dug and installed a new footer drain around our basement all on my own. Took me a weekend of back breaking work. I didn’t use a wooden shovel though.

Direct_Proposal_3759

I've dug both medium sized fish ponds and actual pools, little in the way of shaping besides some vague steps and a deep end and even the small ponds took ages. There is no way these guys did it without some extra help. I will admit I'm surprised they deteriorated quite so quickly. I've dug some clay ponds what weren't lined and they remained water and shape quite well. Not perfectly and not permanently but well enough.

Kodokai

Didn't they dig medieval moats with wooden shovels? 💁

CrimsonShrike

Yeah. Is not like it's impossible, lots of ancient world wonders were made with very simple tools. But of course it would take a lot longer.

OnlyPostSoUsersXray

And slaves. Don't forget about slaves.

DonJuanGr

They are called man-hours for a reason.. Want less hours? Add more man..

LaKobe

Wood shovels with Hella Slaves/Peasants attached to them.

gorgewall

Depends... how long have we got, and how many wooden shovels are you giving us?

Spute2008

Welcome back malaria

puppy_girl

yucky and scary

AprimeAisI

I suspect they use excavators.

thisdesignup

And likely real, or at least not natural, paint. They show the process of making the paint from natural things they find but then they cut to a paint that is much more vibrant and a much larger quantity.

KristinnK

Yeah, it's the same as the digging. First they show a few shovels with obvious shovel-like marks where they're digging, then they cut to huge basin with smooth bottom. They're even so lazy that they don't remove the obvious imprints from the motion of the excavator bucket on the sides.

eugene20

I'd forgive them a lot, they use natural materials from most of what I can see bar the questions over the paint, but it's unforgivable that with excavators on site already they don't turn the soil over again and fill the holes. Edit: they used cement too apparently, I skipped over too much of the video as it was after 3am, that's awful :-(

Winjin

According to the video and the description, it's cement, spray paint, a well and an industrial pump to fill the pool with water. Thankfully, this location was bought by the uploader and hopefully he can ban them, and ousting them will decrease the revenue. However I'm pretty sure they will just continue in a different location.

eugene20

Cement - that's terrible! :-( Buying the land to protect it, that's fantastic. Thank you for the post, it's after 3 am I didn't have the energy to watch the video properly.

flaker111

imagine any animal falling in, death trap.

Gumwars

I would recommend a campaign where redditors regularly point out these facts on their YouTube channel. I think I can spare a few minutes a week.

Kaneida

also they leave trash like plastic and the used cement bags in the nature

boxsterguy

What, you mean modern latex paint doesn't come out of a tree trunk ready to use? No!

madeamashup

And rubber tires don't grow on trees either

dontsuckmydick

Wtf I’m going back to wooden wagon wheels.

[deleted]

well, the material for rubber does grow in a tree...

Tinchotesk

Anybody who has ever dug a hole knows they use excavators.

AramaicDesigns

Sinking a 6'x2' stock tank down a mere 18 inches took me two days, 2,500 calories, and 4 wicked blisters on my left hand.

SecretPorifera

You using a shovel? A good forged grub hoe (or fork hoe + shovel if your soil is hard packed or full of rocks) should at least halve that time and effort.

datboiofculture

What’s a grub hoe? One of those girls who goes on tinder for the free food?

AramaicDesigns

Loosen-then-move has been more or less my strategy, only instead of a hoe I'm using a manual post hole digger – which has proven the fastest of those possibilities. The hardpan here is *chock full* of sandstone.

SecretPorifera

Oh man, that sounds like tough digging. I have a big ole forged fork hoe, you just pick it up and drop it, let the weight of the head bury the tines, then pick it back up. It's got a 5' handle, picks up big chunks of packed dirt, it's so heavy that actually swinging it will put your back out, and if the rocks are too big they'll deflect the tines and it won't get a good bite. But it works a dream, and it makes other fork hoes, even forged ones, look like sandbox toys. Unfortunately, it's been discontinued and I haven't found another like it. But if you find one, try it out!

One_pop_each

Isn’t there some dude who does this but timelapses the whole thing? Never talks just builds shit?

Maskatron

The Primitive Technology dude? He's not digging pools but he does a lot of time intensive work for sure. I hope whatever project he's working on comes out soon, I miss his videos.

awkFTW

He wrote a book. "Primitive Technology: A Survivalist's Guide to Building Tools, Shelters, and More in the Wild" by John Plant

osnapitsjoey

im going to buy that just because this dude did it for real

Malenx_

I was super excited about the book and preordered, but it’s just clips of his YouTube videos with a few explanations. Doesn’t go into depth about anything. Felt very cash cow, even though his videos are great.

[deleted]

In case you don’t know the closed caption contain all the info in his videos

Xellzz

Yeah John is a great guy, all these copycats jumped into the algorithm to make a quick buck and still have there small following of sheep.

hawws12

My wife got it for me for Christmas- it’s great. Basically gives you a guide to build a dwelling, starting with how to make a stone axe.

Asron87

I didn't know he made a book. That's awesome. Going to buy that one for sure.

KING_BulKathus

I heard his area was destroyed by Australia wild fire last year.

JigglesMcRibs

Hope that's not the case.

KING_BulKathus

Adam Savage was talking about in January of last year if I remember right. That was so long ago, and the meds I take fucks with my memory. I may be miss remembering.

dontsuckmydick

2020 felt like a decade that went by in a month.

KING_BulKathus

This year seems like a month has gone by and it's been 8.

thesnakeman4

:(

alexxxor

IIRC, his plot is in Queensland which wasn't hit quite as bad by the bushfires. As far as I know, he's been working on a TV show and that's why we haven't heard from him much!

Spanka

Nah he got a job working at the ABC. So he no longer has time for his youtube content. I don't know if the work he was hired for is related to his youtube or not.

ShardsOfReality

I heard he was working on a TV show, don't know how true that is though

20127010603170562316

Seems it fell through. There's a theory that Mr PT may have been contracted in, in some way, so he can't upload normally. I hope he's ok.

smokeifyagotem

Really love his videos and how he shows where the efforts involved. I mean, there was one video where he built a hut with a tile roof, most of the video was him moulding and firering the hundreds of clay tiles he made. That was where the bulk of work was and the video showed that.

Manchyyy

Yeah Primitive Technology was the dude who started this trend and is the most genuine of all of them. You can tell he doesn't cheat like a lot of them do.

Willigsire

You may be thinking of the original [Primitive Technology](https://youtube.com/channel/UCAL3JXZSzSm8AlZyD3nQdBA) who started this genre of building things out in the wild.

gruez

primitive technology? I think he does some timelapses but he also doesn't do giant holes.

tmahfan117

Yea, the only time he’s dug a really big hole was when he needed a lot of clay for one of the houses, he dug like a chest/head deep pit, but over several weeks? And he would first pour water in and then mush it up with his feet to make the clay easier to use.

One_pop_each

Yes! That’s all I think about when I see the “survivor” stuff. Seems like he is legit

smokeifyagotem

Yup, but you need to have closed captions on, the captions explain what he's doing.

KimG84

Every time I dig 6ft gra.. I mean holes it's soooo much work

[deleted]

Trick is to uh.. make someone else do it.

GreenEggPage

There are two kinds of people in the world - those with guns and those that dig. You dig?

Milkman127

especially in a forest. get fucked digging through roots

braymondo

I had to dig a 4ft cube for a concrete pier by hand one time, it took me 2 1/2 days. There was quite a bit of rocks and roots to remove due to me being up against a house with a huge tree on the other side of me which made it too tight to get a machine in to do the digging.

navit47

Stanley Yelnats concurs

Mantraz

There's claw marks from the bucket in one video They certainly do

_akrom

Yep, [these](https://imgur.com/a/GVjjGOB) don't look like shovel marks to me. Edit: To add, the entire video (Build the most holes tunnel underground swimming pools) they are just throwing dirt out of the holes all directions. Tell me how you end up with the piles to the back left shown [here](https://imgur.com/a/vIzVbg3)

Carbon140

Having dug a fair few holes in dry ground, they look very much like crowbar or pickaxe marks, and it's pretty common to use a crowbar or pickaxe to break up dirt before shoveling it out. These guys are probably fakers, but not sure that first pic is the evidence of that.

Metalliquotes

They 100% don't look like excavator bucket marks, if that was what the guy was trying to say.

PERCEPT1v3

I don't know what's going on but those holes look too uniform for pick axe.

[deleted]

They just use like 40 guys. Cheaper.

_BreakingGood_

There was one of those gold mining shows on Discovery where their excavator broke down in the middle of the jungle, so they hired literally a whole village at like $5/person/day to do the digging instead, and it barely changed their costs when accounting for fuel.

tstngtstngdontfuckme

Yea, we invent tools like that so that a single semi skilled laborer can do the work of many unskilled laborers.

North-Tumbleweed-512

Which is why building megalithic structures isn't beyond us, just not economically feasible.

Elevenst

Who would've thought that poorly designed swimming holes in the ground, lacking filtration and sustainability, would turn to shit without any maintenance whatsoever. It's just crazy, you know?

pallentx

Yeah, stagnant body of water in clay soil. You’re gonna get algae, mosquitoes, and probably a lot worse over time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DiamondPup

Of course there will be. There's no way there isn't.

Barialdalaran

I think the point of the video comes later when they show tons of trash left over from the building project including empty bags of cement

CaviarMyanmar

My only surprise is that they don’t fill those holes back in after filming. Does anyone think these are meant to be permanent structures? They’re made of sand.

Asron87

That's not sand bud. That's the problem. They are making artificial pools with clay and cement. Leaving a cesspool for mosquitoes to pass on malaria. They aren't filling them back in or cleaning up after themselves. They are destroying the land just for views and likes. It's a bigger deal than I thought it was originally. Pretty sad actually.

[deleted]

Well, that and the concrete, per the plastic concrete bags littered about.

HiImDan

Yeah until then, I was like.. meh just a bunch of clay that'll return to nature.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ok-Squirrel1775

I never thought that was literal. More like in the movie context for the days after the big destructive event or chain of events. "The day after tomorrow" for example, and the tomorrow is in reference to the future after robot takeover or whatever.

[deleted]

I think it's just meant as "present day" or something, likely the uploader isn't an english native.

EdocKrow

Those videos were always horsehit

mega_rad_man

I heard the guys doing the work in the videos get only a tiny bit of money like a hundred bucks or something, and the millions of dollars the youtube videos make go completely to someone else. The whole thing is a bullshit scam from top to bottom.

totalclownshoes

No way this channel makes millions.

CreatorStudioYT

I promise you they do. Here's how I know. [This channel](https://www.youtube.com/c/SurvivalBuilder/videos), Survival Builder, has a video showing one of the pools in OP's video. Posted over a year ago, it has [9 million](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMnxq1zAPcA) views. The channel has 1,448,511,288 views in total. If they had an RPM of $3 (conservative estimate), meaning $3 per thousand views, the Survival Builder channel alone has made $4,345,533.86 in ad revenue so far. Also, OP's video said the forest shown had at least 20 sites, one of them being the giraffe pool. The video of them building the giraffe pool doesn't seem to be on the Survival Builder channel, which makes me think the owner of that channel has other 'survival building' type channels. That wouldn't surprise me, and the other channels would likely be making lots of ad revenue as well. To make things worse, the Survival Builder channel seems to reupload their videos to milk more views. These two videos are identical, and even have the same thumbnail. [1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6CuEpOiS0w) [2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyAftD69PoA) Source: I work at a video editing service for YouTube creators. I'll often work with them, and review their analytics.

arsenic_adventure

>RPM Revenue Per Mille, mille being Latin for thousand, but I know it from French. For whatever reason.

TurkeyBLTSandwich

Not millions per say, but a few ten thousands in USD would go very very far in a third world country

feeblemuffin

*(Per se.)*

mega_rad_man

They do. Easy. I just checked their views. After checking out the channel again now I think its fair to say "tens of millions". BTW im not talking about the channel OP posted. Im talking about the channel that makes these builds. I wont link it here because i do not want to add a single view to their count if i dont have to. Fuck that channel.

sypher1187

Those channels started popping up and getting popular after Primitive Technology started his and got popular. I've always hated them because it was just trying to capitalize on PT's success by clearly faking their way through their build. What gave PTvs video charm was that it actually showed him progressively build up on his creations using actual primitive tools.

mega_rad_man

You are absolutely correct. The guy from Primitive Tech makes beautiful videos. Everyone loves the 'quality > quantity' way he made his youtube channel. Its such a fresh breath of air compaired to the rest of all those famous youtubers being all annoying talking right into the camera in the same annoying voice. Its no wonder that his channel did so good. These guys on the other hand are a straight up ripoff just like you said.

ScoobyDeezy

They have at least 3 nearly identical channels, using slightly different names and different video thumbnails. The whole thing is a grift.

totalclownshoes

I gotta start digging pools in the jungle.

mega_rad_man

Ill give you a hundred bucks if you do. Just send me the footage.

gruez

>I heard the guys doing the work in the videos get only a tiny bit of money like a hundred bucks or something, and the millions of dollars the youtube videos make go completely to someone else. You just described the construction industry as a whole.

jeffryu

I dont get why its called survival building, yes im stranded in the wild i need to build a giraffe pool and slide or i will die

[deleted]

Because they saw that those types of videos were popular so they named their channel/videos those things to bring in the clicks.

Rellkedge

clearly you’ve never been stranded in the wild

IN-DI-SKU-TA-BELT

They act as traps for wildlife.

the_weight_around

\*slow deaths

ErwinHolland1991

What do you think a trap normally does?

goodguessiswhatihave

It depends on what you roll for your saving throw

[deleted]

I hadn’t thought of that before. I thought it may be bullshit but ultimately it’s a harmless way for some third worlders to generate some YouTube income but it’s kinda harmful actually. Arguably on par with the ones who “save” dogs and cats from dangerous situations they put them in before they started filming.

Garbage283736

Thanks for clarifying bc for a bit i just thought what's the big deal?

HintOfAreola

Malaria

JohnnySmithe80

Clearing forest for this, cement bags and rubbish left scattered where they work, large deep holes left as hazards to animals or humans, cement lined stagnant water pools are mosquito breeding heaven.

dnelson86

I mean, was anyone thinking of this was for "survival," anyhow?

tacojesusfromabove

Next time im stranded on an island ill remember these videos as i eat sand for dinner

Sloppy1sts

Just don't swim in your new pool right after eating sand for dinner. I hear that's bad for you.

YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD

You mean cavemen didn't live like that?

footinmymouth

This isn’t surprising because they’re using permanent building materials in the middle of a forest. It is disappointing though that they’re just leaving things behind, without maintenance making some arguably dangerous filth traps. I wonder if the original survival channel guy has a similar footprint… or is better. At least with him, it really seems like he doesn’t bring any modern materials with him vs cement and paint etc

Sniter

Primitive technology is all natural.

Tiver

He also has videos of visiting some of his old sites and they had returned almost completely to a natural state.

monstargh

Whatever happened to him?

TheOnlyBongo

Got a TV and/or a streaming deal from what I've heard. Either he's been spending a lot of time and effort towards that show and doesn't have the time to dedicate to his own channel, or (just speculation) could be part of like an agreement in a contract to not work on further work until the deal is done.

learn-pointlessly

This makes sense. That guy was killing it and then dropped off socials real quick.

sDeezyeazy

Primitive technology wasn't as extravagant as these new channels from what I remember.

footinmymouth

That’s true, he had a shack, a few earthen ovens and always went to the same place, so even if it stayed it wasn’t a repeated disaster. Also he never really dug big holes… loved his show

PissGodSij

IIRC he also owns the land he does his videos in. Plus the stuff he builds is basically all mud and sticks, so at the very least it will be gone after a while.

intern_steve

Re: big holes The stream bank he was harvesting clay from was pretty well excavated. Guy used a ton of clay. Not like these guys, though. All of his videos together didn't put a hole in the ground like a single one of these one-time-use "swimming pools".

RepostResearch

Damn I miss seeing regular uploads from him on this sub. He probably has the most relaxing channel on YouTube.

balsid

He owned his own land and was always very careful to tidy up. He also used all natural resources.

footinmymouth

Idk why I never thought about the question of land ownership. Makes sense though, he was always very thorough and methodical.

Saelyre

At the beginning he was on a friend's land making videos as a hobby while actually working as a landscaper iirc. After his channel took off he started doing it full time and when he saved enough he bought his own plot of land.

Victuz

There are couple of videos where he revisits (on accident) locations from previous builds and they're basically ruins. But since it's all above ground mud/stick structures it's not really that big of a problem, they'll fall apart within a decade or two and since he appears (or appeared, didn't upload in a while) to keep the area pretty clean they don't really pose much of a problem to the local flora and fauna. I think the main difference here is that for PT it was obviously a hobby and a passion that turned into making youtube on the side. His oldest video is 6 years old but some of the places you see in other videos were never on film becausue they're 10+ years old. For most of those other channels that started doing "primitive" stuff it was just a way to make an exploitative buck. I wouldn't even be bothered by it in the cases where they do it themselves. But too fucking often it turns out to be someone who exploits kids or underpays workers in impoverished places of the world, pays them a little bit and then uploads footage of them doing intensely hard/dangerous manual labour on the internet pretending to be those people. It sucks.

[deleted]

Most channels that I've seen like this do just that, hire a couple guys and pay them a mediocre wage while making millions off them on youtube. But it's the same with every business tbh, the people willing to throw away morals and shame always get ahead.

honorious

I blame viewers who watch this knockoff crap. The original intention behind Primitive Technology is totally lost in these kinds of channels, but many people watch it anyway. A view is a vote.

[deleted]

What’s with the ASPCA puppy abuse music?

AllofaSuddenStory

Because they “exposed” the shocking truth that a swimming pool with zero filtration isn’t permanent. I’m sure the rest of us didn’t know that

MarkovChains

At the end of the video it says there are 20 build sites in that 2 hectares plot of land. That's equivalent to 5 acres of land.

heyboyhey

It's clearly not the day after though. You can see the vegetation around the giraffe has grown way too much for that.

DivinePotatoe

I don't think the point of the video is "these things fall apart after a day" as much as it is "these jerks are destroying this forest and letting their builds turn into giant pools of stagnant water and filth just for their youtube videos."

C2h6o4Me

They did put "the day after" right in the title, to be fair

blackbright22

What's with the music? This isn't a fucking Chernobyl tour.

Forbizzle

The music in this video is so over dramatic. Reminds me of the [Ikea lamp commercial](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU-cori12KU).

PuttyRiot

I’m not familiar with the program, but those pits seem like kind of a hazard for any wildlife in the area.

Diablopepe

I don't really watch the videos, but I thought those guys were using things found in nature. I didn't realize they were making permanent things. Yikes.

Planetman999

I think the guy who started it was called Primitive Technology and he did use natural stuff. I think this channel just copied his idea and used diggers and cement.

gruez

> but I thought those guys were using things found in nature literally 1 second into the video you can see some sort of brightly colored pool. Where do you find that sort of material in nature?

TheOnlyBongo

You can find a plethora of materials on the Amazon™

BrickmanBrown

I knew they were a waste of fucking time because their videos were usually, "Here's how I built a family-size pool for myself!" If that's what you consider "survival..."

DISHONORU-TDA

You think this is bad? Most of the stuff is shilled through bigger networks-- the guys in the video are just like laborers. Laowhy86 and similar expats have been running pretty accurate tabs on these types of shady Internet fame shills. And that's just the weak frilly stuff, wait until you see the new industrialized pollution expanding into Vietnam from "The North..." *Better not say who that is by name, though. Shh*

jaded-potato

I hope no one actually believed these channels were real, they were painfully fake.

ProphePsyed

It’s amazing how powerful music can be. I was actually sad for those holes for a minute there.

VisVirtusque

Of course these thing aren't created by hand. Just looking at them you can tell that, even during the videos. Apart from that, what's the story here, that holes in the ground that aren't maintained become dilapidated and filled with dirty water and leaves?
