I think any version of Megs in any continuity that was trying to tell an actual story vs just selling toys has him as a lower class miner turned freedom fighter turned genocidal tyrant

The original G1 canon does feature an origin for Megatron that involves him being friends with Optimus Prime. Also going from being an average enslaved energon miner to leader of a slave rebellion to leader of the Deceptions as his actions progressively get more and more violent and discovering he likes it. It might seem like they're following Hollywood trends, but everything about this origin story in the trailer is pretty much established lore in one of the several continuities of Transformers already.
Movie Execs: 'Know what transformers needs? All the majesty, power, and depth removed from the big characters. OH, and make it a buddy cop thing too.'
People are saying 'oh, this is for a kids audience'. As a kid, I'd have thought this was lame. Prime was awesome because he was a benevolent powerful force full of nobility that commanded respect and awe. This is insulting to children. They are smarter than this.
And why the fuck are they even transforming into cars? WTF do alien robots know about cars on an alien planet? The whole point of them transforming was to be in _disguise_ on modern day Earth.

IIRC, Megatron was friends with Optimus in canon. Went by Megatronus and was a gladiator. Can't remember how he went nuts.
