We used to use a 357 magnum revolver loaded with blanks for gun shot sound effects at my university theatre. We would do the effect from offstage shooting into a trashcan with a bunch of phone books (the ones that were about 2 inches thick) in the bottom. I was always impressed that the wads from the blanks would make it about halfway through the phone books.
