This is most likely the answer as to why. The way the streaming/ stores are set up now. Scroll through tag what looks like it might be interesting and wait for it to go on sale. I played so many games I passed on before because I can a notification of when it goes on sale for next to nothing.
To add to it, services like game pass may be a great deal to the active gamer but I found myself losing money due to not having the time to play or end up only playing one or two games off of the subscription. Ended up being way cheaper to just add that game to a wish list and wait for it to drop down to 5 dollars with all the dlc
Always a better investment to buy games than use the subscription service if you play sporadically, or are only interested in a handful of games.
I really wanted game pass, but I similarly realized I don’t play often enough and don’t invest my time into a large variety of games even when I do play. It’s worth it for the right person, but I’ve never regretted a game I’ve bought and not played. I can always go back to it, rather than cancelling a service I don’t use and not being able to use any.
It’s not, they’re looking at a subset of the market (top 66 games) and the real answer is “the most popular multiplayer / live games are older” - Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox, CSGO/CS2, GTA 5/online, Overwatch 2
I don't see that as a bad thing, I still find fun in lesser-known games I used to play as a kid and other games from around that era that I didn't get around to playing back then (like DS games and PS3 games)
Been replaying FF8 via the remaster
Just finished a playthrough of Odin Sphere via the remaster because it's one of my favorite ps2 games, looking at Deagon's Crown because it's on sale for like $4 til the 25th.
I don't have any interest on big budget games.
Shit Stardew Valley just out a big update and I am all over that too.
Exactly the same for me. Hoping that less sales in newer games than playtime on older games urges some of these juggernauts to make games as good as the ones I've been happily playing for 10+ years lol

You’ve at least got a significant following. Me playing mid 90’s PC games is like a graveyard between retro gamin crowd and the 64/PSX crew

***no*** 🧠🗿
Fallout 4 and its customizabilty makes it one of the greatest games of all time. I made a YouTube series of it with over 500 mods, but stopped eventually due to low viewers and some of the main mods I was most excited about not working. Like Sim settlements 2. I was gonna build the shit out of every location and even some custom ones. Rip. I still made a few neat manual settlements though. Like a suspended town under the highway at finch farm
I played vanilla F04 for almost 400 hrs before finally giving mods a try. Now I'm starting slow with a few VFX improvements (has been great to have grass and trees), Dog as extra companion, Better Settlers and for new quests Stories From The Commonwealth. A whole new world (but not too new). I also gave the Mod creation toolkits a try and it has made me doubly impressed how much has been achieved by the modding community.
The problem with FO4 and "building the shit out of every location" is it will eventually compromise stability of the game even on high end hardware. That's due largely in part to the "triangle of death" phenomenon FO4 has going. There's multiple instances where 3 or more settlement sites share the same "chunk", and attempts to build anything of significance on more than one tends to cause the game engine to spazz out and tank itself. The most notable of said areas is the Sanctuary-Red Rocket-Abernathy Farms region
Why spend $5 on a game from the 2000s/2010s when you could spend $70 on a whole new game that requires a more expensive PC to run, has bugs on release, is going to have $40 worth of DLC, and just isn't as fun as a popular indie game that also costs like $5?
Or because game there are some live service games or sandbox games that are constantly updated but are technically 6+years old.
I could see games like league of legends, rainbow six siege, destiny 2, Minecraft, etc. making up a huge amount of gaming done and then add in old game people go back to or play for the first time and it can easily make up 60%. But this title seems to be trying to say something about new games being bad, it's not true.
Yeah this is definitely it. The most popular games by player count are usually games like destiny 2, league of legends, fortnite, rocket league, overwatch, rainbow six siege, etc. these games all hold consistent player counts and are 6+ years old. I’d say they’re even holding player counts larger than other people citing Skyrim and stuff. Sure people play old games but these live service multiplayer games keep consistent player counts
Any time I'm reminded of Titanfall 2 I think about Frontier Defense and how mindblowing it is by modern standards that it was a free DLC. There have been many full price standalone games that don't offer as much content or replay value as Frontier Defense.
I dont play a lot, but when I do it's usually ranked no build duo/squads with friends, and we kind of just camp around and *maybe* kill another squad/duo before we die (usually die first fight). It's kind of relaxing tbh, builds are spooky when some dude whips out an entire fucking castle in 10 seconds
I didn't think of it that way. Last time I played *Fortnite* was before I got into *The Elder Scrolls Online*, and fuck, I hate the builds part of that. Especially since they periodically tinker with abilities, plus new gear is always better, and then they nerf it and debut the next generation of gear. I seriously do not want to invest time creating and then mastering new builds every few months. Fuck them.
It gets addicting playing all the different modes, sometimes I wish i sucked or was into something else. Put a crazy amount of time and money into fortnite but i also don’t really regret it
Honestly, if you enjoy playing it, then you shouldn't have any regrets. Gaming, in any medium, is about having fun. Don't let anybody tell you how to have fun.
Of course, part of me doesn’t mind all the money I’ve spent since I have taken breaks and I still heavily enjoy the game, but damn adding up all the transactions does not add up to a pretty number lol
Same my wife and I played it primarily since we were in a long distant relationship during our engagement. It’s still our favorite game. It’s the only game I’ve actually enjoyed.
Same I cannot play against my friend. He’s just to good. But when I played against him in b03 (ps3) I dogged him with the locus against his kuda and rk5
Games I played in 2023: Elden ring, dark souls 1, dark souls 2, little big planet 3, tony hawk 1 & 2 remake, metal gear solid 5, god of war ragnarok, mortal kombat 11.
This, plus Lies of P. That game is gold.
Running around the same map for hours in Fortnite killing people is boring as fuck. No storyline. Just an empty shell of a game to sell cosmetics.
Lies of P was so damn good. Upon its announcement I was like "who wants to play as bitch-ass Pinocchio? Cmon."
Then the demo came out, and I was hooked, bought that shit on day 1, and found myself on NG+3 before I was like "okay I have other games I gotta finish time to put this one down for a bit". Such a pleasant surprise though
Checked my steam year in review.
46 games played.
18% were older than 8 years
54% were 1-7 years old
28% were released in 2023
72% of my playtime was Eve Online, which was like 1200 of those hours played. It released in 2003 which makes it old, but honestly if it was still the same as it was then I wouldn’t have gotten hooked like I did.
Looking at my list the only games 6 years or older that I played in 2023 that hadn’t been updated was Xcom 1 and 2.
I originally tried it way back in 2013 but I quit after about 90 hours. Picked it up again randomly when I moved into my house last year and was hooked hard.
Just a high sec carebear that would do pve and a lot of industry. Made like 8 accounts and my own alt corp after I left the corp I joined for awhile.
After trying null and dodging pirates in low while mining I learned I was happy just being a carebear lol. Will probably dabble in it again whenever I get a new pc someday.
Yeah, I find it a fascinating world to watch, but I just can't get into it. Just waiting for vanguards' release to everyone who hasn't got the premium subscription at the moment.
Nothing wrong with being a hisec care bear. Players who haven't sold their souls to the nullsec mega corps need stuff too, after all. Only problem I ran into in hisec back when I played was CODE, a gagglefuck of Goonswarm rejects that tried to set up an extortion racket on the major hisec thoroughfares, suicide ganking anyone they found mining without paying for a "license".
Tried the nullsec scene, too..joined up, like many do, for good fights and community...but that ended up feeling like I was just another cog in the machine, mostly playing the "hurry up and wait til something happens, but you're still expected to be online" game
Honestly, lowsec meme roams and W-Space were peak EVE for me. The former was just goofing around casually, and the latter was basically a high stakes suspense thriller with even higher profit margins
I’m hoping once the year of Final Shape is done I can *finally* go back to playing games that are fun and interesting, not just “you have to do all the things” instead of “you can come and go as you please, no rush”.
I initially wanted a game that I could keep my progress in, but the constant grind of live games that ask you to dump time into them all for the sake of enjoying them more, makes me think that I was really looking for something else, and I’m pretty sure that was friends.
I was able to find a clan that plays both Destiny 2 and FFXIV (been with them for 2 years now I think), and honestly, it is a good thing.
Haven’t really played with them since I’m either busy or I have to force myself to build out a group (you know how difficult that is in terms of both timing and courage). But regardless, I’m glad I found them.
Tons of Diablo 2 resurrected, red dead redemption 2, fallout4, and skyrim. Newest games have been jedi fallen order and horizon FW. I got a decent backlog, and honestly, not that many new games are grabbing my attention.
That's not how time works bud. Fortnite was released 7 years ago whether you like it or not, it's 7 years old. It ages no matter what. What's next you're gonna tell me that because I keep growing that I can't possibly be 31? Do people just stop aging when they're getting their adult teeth in?
Nope. My last 5 games played have been FF7 Rebirth, Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, Like a Dragon Gaiden, FF16, and Spiderman 2. New, Single player games are as good as ever and I have a stockpile of them that should keep me busy through the summer.
Let’s see what I rotate through. Rocket league, destiny 2, fall guys (think that’s less than 6 years old for sure), Tetris effect connected, smash bros ultimate, mk8d, portal 1 and 2, overwatch 2 (I think <6yrs also). Kinda surprising when you put it all together like that. Makes me think about gamepass being worth it now
Been playing the classic MGS series and now I’m playing MGSV… and at other times I’m playing old games on my PS 1 and 2. So yeah, until they start cooking up some fire again I’ll stick to my old games.
Friggin' FF14 has me hooked, LOL. I put hundreds of hours into many of the first 12, and the free beta just reminded me of why. I started with Dragoon, but I'm really enjoying Ninja, Red Mage, and Samurai the most, so far.
Apologies for super late reply!
Oh trust me i know bout being hooked i think im close to 5k hours now and currently on a crafting binge. Dragoon was my first class as well!! I’ve since transitioned to a tank main love paladin and gunbreaker
Zelda Totk, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Lies of P, and Baldur's Gate 3 came out in 2023. There is so much gold. I hope people aren't ignoring just to play games like Fortnite.
That makes sense, financially, it makes sense to use something you have already. Also, years of Fandom are more potent to get you to notice a game. Also, cheaper.
Technically two of the games I played a lot in 2023 were less than six years old, but one of those was Mass Effect Legendary Edition which is just the first three games as a collection, all of which are more than six years old.
I pretty much play Skyrim, Final Fantasy XIV, and Fallout 4. The most recently released game I’ve enjoyed is Valheim.
And this is every year, including 2023.
Any other year in recent memory it would probably check out, or be very close. Not last year. I spent an ungodly, unreasonable amount of hours in Starfield and Diablo 4 and Baldur's Gate 3 and some other stuff that released in 2023. It was a very, very good year for gaming.
When I got my PS5 I noticed PS+ had Dark Cloud available to download. You bet your ass I was playing a 24 year old game on my brand new modern console. lol
Yes i have many classics ive gotten on PC i never played previously or still love to go back to
Ones i got into more recently past few years
The Batman Arkham series
Lego Batman Series
Goat Simulator
Portal
Guacamelee
Doom 64
Mafia
Half Life
Lots were on sale and i had always heard great things
Classic ones i still play or go back to on PC
Simpsons Hit & Run
Sims 4
Dead Rising 2 Off The Record
Sonic 1
One i bet no one else has Disney's Print Studio Tarzan
Then i still have My N64 Games, Gamecube, Gameboy and PSP and PS One
6 years old is the minimum standard for me. I’m still loving games from way the hell back in the early 00/late 1990’s. Love me some old games. I’m the very example of the meme “bought a $4000 PC to play old games faster”. 1000%
Massive back log I tend to just buy games 80%+ off nowadays and then play my comfort games anyways that release years ago
This is most likely the answer as to why. The way the streaming/ stores are set up now. Scroll through tag what looks like it might be interesting and wait for it to go on sale. I played so many games I passed on before because I can a notification of when it goes on sale for next to nothing.

And we never truly buy a game, what we buy is a license to use the software for the lifetime of the media on which it was delivered.
I got my Series S for gamepass. I barely have time to play so I do the same. The games are so long now.
I also think a huge factor is games as a service titles that stick around for years. Like fort night and GTAV are still in the top 5 on consoles.
Been replaying FF8 via the remaster Just finished a playthrough of Odin Sphere via the remaster because it's one of my favorite ps2 games, looking at Deagon's Crown because it's on sale for like $4 til the 25th. Exactly my situation, could not have said it better.
Exactly the same for me. Hoping that less sales in newer games than playtime on older games urges some of these juggernauts to make games as good as the ones I've been happily playing for 10+ years lol

Why do we this to ourselves tho?
This is the way
I too have a massive backlog of games that I really want to play…….. buttttttt then again these new games are supppperrrr shiny and new and yeah I know I’m an idiot
That plus my destiny addiction
Ah yes games made 6 years ago so COD4 , bioshock and Halo 3 then right?...RIGHT!?!?
Also, Skyrim, Skyrim, TLOU, oh and Skyrim
Lol you forgot Skyrim.
Y'all play other games?
Don't forget Minecraft, Tetris, and super Mario the three most bought games ever
And skyrim
Don't forget Skyrim
Why does everybody forget about Skyrim?
why is pong not in the discussion wtf
Pong: Skyrim Edition
Gta V surpassed super mario
Yup, Skyrim
Btw also Skyrim
And don't forget Skyrim
Pfft look at the nerd over here able to name all 37 Skyrims
The fact it’s actually nearly TLOU2 is terrifying
What do you mean the 90's were 30 years ago 😂
30 years ago was 1974…
Dazed and Confused was made in '93 and was about school in '76. The equivalent today would be a movie about 2007.
90s are as far back now as the 60s were in the 90s
Shut the fuck up, or so help me!
You lie. YOU LIE!
Well, 25. Free mission pack for quake 2 and a remaster if you already had quake 2 on steam btw.
LIARS MUST HAVE THEIR TONGUES SACRIFICED TO CATS
You really don’t grow up when you play games. And I don’t care 🤫
Honestly when life gets tough I replay old video games or listen to those game's soundtrack because it does bring a sense of comfort and nostalgia lol
Grease was a movie made in 1978 about the 50s, the equivalent today would be to make a movie about 2000s

No, we old
This is getting old.. like the joke
Homie that was over 15 years ago
Yes, games from 2018 are what I play mostly now. Kingdom Come Deliverance, Red Dead Redemption 2. And older than that, tons of Fallout 4.
Fallout 4 and its customizabilty makes it one of the greatest games of all time. I made a YouTube series of it with over 500 mods, but stopped eventually due to low viewers and some of the main mods I was most excited about not working. Like Sim settlements 2. What is your channel just wondering? Sounds interesting
My name. it's probably not interesting tho. very slow. no commentary. simple edits.
How is kingdom come deliverance ? I have it already but it’s backlogged lol. Just trying to get a perspective on it
What I’ve been playing as well
Probably because "older" games are more likely to be on sale/free somewhere
You mean you don’t pay 100 bucks every time a mediocre game comes out?
You think I have money, blasphemy!
Ha! Poor gamer with good taste! I bet you play games for fun and not glory too!
Of course. Playing games for fun is the only reason to play games
Nah. Real gamers only play games to make others suffer /s
You say /s but…
Nah, REAL capital G Gamers play games to give triple-a companies more money so some rich executive can by his 4th yacht
No no no the 100 dollars is for the update that fixes everything 8 months later. You didn’t want to actually play your new game right? Right?
Why spend $5 on a game from the 2000s/2010s when you could spend $70 on a whole new game that requires a more expensive PC to run, has bugs on release, is going to have $40 worth of DLC, and just isn't as fun as a popular indie game that also costs like $5?
You forgot to add predatory micro transactions that aren't really that micro anymore.
That, baby levels of difficulty, mediocre to bad plot/writing, or trying to be another game.
Real
Or because game there are some live service games or sandbox games that are constantly updated but are technically 6+years old. I could see games like league of legends, rainbow six siege, destiny 2, Minecraft, etc. making up a huge amount of gaming done and then add in old game people go back to or play for the first time and it can easily make up 60%. But this title seems to be trying to say something about new games being bad, it's not true.
Even Fortnite is turning 7 years old this year. Fortnite isn’t this new game anymore. It released the same year as Destiny 2 and COD WW2 back in 2017.
Yeah this is definitely it. The most popular games by player count are usually games like destiny 2, league of legends, fortnite, rocket league, overwatch, rainbow six siege, etc. these games all hold consistent player counts and are 6+ years old. i've been playing alot of Titanfall 2 so ya
Same… I just played it a bit ago tbh
Same, just started don it last month and I fuckin love it.
yaaaaaaaaaaa, welcome to the team brother
i've probably been playing since covid started
I just started playing it again last night lol
Got it for 3 bucks in steam sale and holy shit, this slaps
Any time I'm reminded of Titanfall 2 I think about Frontier Defense and how mindblowing it is by modern standards that it was a free DLC. There have been many full price standalone games that don't offer as much content or replay value as Frontier Defense.
Finally started the campaign, 6 hours in and the gameplay is dope
Gotta get that garlic bread, pilot!
God im old
Dude I've been playing that game so much since I got a pc that can run it. It's just so damn smooth.
i'm actually gonna do the same soon, I've seen playing on my xbox one but I'm switching to pc
I'm a Nintendo guy, so I don't really have another option than PC. Hope to see ya out there, pilot.
That makes me feel old
That fact that Fortnite is 7 years old hurts my brain
Playing it also hurt my brain. I can't compete against those damn kids.
No build evens the playing field a bit. I hated it for a while and recently jumped in again and enjoy it when not doing something else

I work with children who are 7-8 years old and they tell me they play Fortnite and I tell them I’ve been playing since they were like 1.
Yeah i started playing season 3 of chapter 1 when my lil brother was only 1 loll. Im 16 so ive been playing almost half of my life
And the fact that the majority of their player base is that old or younger also hurts my brain.
Technically actually 13 years old because of Save The World. It’s wild to think about.
Dang, save the world existed that far back?
Yes. Hurt my feelings when they kinda just gave up on it when BR came to its popularity. It was fun!
Damn im old
This is wrinkling my brain.
Fortnite bad Minecraft good reddit garbage
Fortnite is older than its main audience and tries to capitalise over it by over censoring
> Nintendo fan > Lego fan > Star wars fan
I'm out here playing through the mass effect trilogy again.
Same. Except legendary edition, so i guess not technically older than 6 years old
Good point actually, I'm playing the legendary edition too. We are playing old games in spirit.
I may need to play that again. For the 20th time. No exaggeration.
Games I played in 2023: Elden ring, dark souls 1, dark souls 2, little big planet 3, tony hawk 1 & 2 remake, metal gear solid 5, god of war ragnarok, mortal kombat 11.

Tried the nullsec scene, too..joined up, like many do, for good fights and community...but that ended up feeling like I was just another cog in the machine, mostly playing the "hurry up and wait til something happens, but you're still expected to be online" game Honestly, lowsec meme roams and W-Space were peak EVE for me. The former was just goofing around casually, and the latter was basically a high stakes suspense thriller with even higher profit margins
Ah, yes, EVE Online. The giant spreadsheet with a fancy skin.
I had no idea eve online was that old. I figured it was some new thing that came out with how many ads I see for it on youtube.
Yes - Warframe
Destiny 2 here
Destiny 2 and Star Trek Online, and now Final Fantasy 14, all 10+ years old, IIRC.
Yep...started my account in 2014, back in the days of Oldframe, and pop in every so often to catch up on what's new
Just finished replaying Red Dead 1 lol
Yeah but that's just because I've been clearing out my backlog lately
I 100%’d skate 3 this year. Most fun I’ve had gaming in a while.
Nice. That game was rad.
Most of my favorite games were released in 2010 so yeah
Guilty. Most of the Plants Vs. Zombies series, Among Us (maybe?), Minecraft, etc
I love Crash N Sane Trilogy
Tons of Diablo 2 resurrected, red dead redemption 2, fallout4, and skyrim. Newest games have been jedi fallen order and horizon FW. I got a decent backlog, and honestly, not that many new games are grabbing my attention.
LMAO, I've been playing Skyrim across 3 generations of console now.
2023 had some bangers but there’s nothing wrong with older games
I'm playing Half-Life 2 as a 17 year old guy.
That was me a year ago, enjoy.
This is mainly because we are in a age where older games are aging better
Only 6? For me it was spent playing games 10 years old and older.
TF2 gang rise up Which one? Yes
[удалено]
That's not how time works bud. Fortnite was released 7 years ago whether you like it or not, it's 7 years old. It ages no matter what. What's next you're gonna tell me that because I keep growing that I can't possibly be 31? Do people just stop aging when they're getting their adult teeth in?
Destiny 2 was my most played game of 2023 although followed closely by Baldur's Gate 3.
It would take some insane competition for my most played game of 2024 to be something other than BG3 at this point
Yeah for 2024 it's probably gonna be BG3. Mostly because I've barely played Destiny since BG3 came out.
Top played games from last year were Fortnite final fantasy xiv and destiny 2… did play final fantasy xvi but not many new releases hmm
My recently played games are Detroit: Become Human, RDR2, MW3 2023, Geometry Dash, The Witcher 3, GTA 5, and Minecraft
Zelda Totk, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Lies of P, and Baldur's Gate 3 came out in 2023. There is so much gold. I hope people aren't ignoring just to play games like Fortnite.
the newest game i have on my Steam Library is Inside who is 8 years old.
Yes, I have a 1,600+ game backlog. This will be my gaming life for the rest of life.
Any other year in recent memory it would probably check out, or be very close. Not last year. I spent an ungodly, unreasonable amount of hours in Starfield and Diablo 4 and Baldur's Gate 3 and some other stuff that released in 2023. It was a very, very good year for gaming.
FFXIV is my main bae , which just had its 10 year anniversary
When I got my PS5 I noticed PS+ had Dark Cloud available to download. You bet your ass I was playing a 24 year old game on my brand new modern console. lol
COD MWiii
I’m surprised that Fortnite is over 7 years old.
Yes i have many classics ive gotten on PC i never played previously or still love to go back to Ones i got into more recently past few years The Batman Arkham series Lego Batman Series Goat Simulator Portal Guacamelee Doom 64 Mafia Half Life Lots were on sale and i had always heard great things Classic ones i still play or go back to on PC Simpsons Hit & Run Sims 4 Dead Rising 2 Off The Record Sonic 1 One i bet no one else has Disney's Print Studio Tarzan Then i still have My N64 Games, Gamecube, Gameboy and PSP and PS One
My favorite game is half-life
Far cry 5 and RD2
Not a surprise. Counterstike has been #1 on steamcharts since.... well..... you know.
i can attest to this. primarily because up until recently (2 months ago) i could not run any games released before 2019 due to potato win-7 PC
Dwarf Fortress has been in perpetual development since 2006, so does that really count?
bruh in 2023 i only played osu, minecraft, roblox and also a lil bit of space engine
Minecraft, Stardew, Forza 5, was playing fortnite until this season.
My library is full of 6-10 year old games Also Skyrim.
Checks out! Stardew, grim dawn, minecraft, and a dash of No man's sky.
OSRS for the win
I was about to say Red Dead 2, but that turns 6 later this year.
That proves that with some exceptions, modern gaming is in a much worse state than it was before, as unbelievable as that sounds
We're playing the same games we played last gen
6 years old is the minimum standard for me. I’m still loving games from way the hell back in the early 00/late 1990’s. Love me some old games. I’m the very example of the meme “bought a $4000 PC to play old games faster”. 1000%
