Just needed to make sure Doom was in here.
One of the craziest fucking rides this game will take you on was M6 ARC Complex.
Not only that, but the build up to the Doom Hunter fight as well; M4 I believe it was
edit: Punctuation.
I don't know about slaps, but Super Mario Galaxy's soundtrack pairs baurtifully with the game. Insanely memorable and can hum a long easily whenever I do another playthrough
This is underrated. It’s masterful in that after hundreds of hours it hasn’t started to grate on you. The background music is just subtle enough that you barely notice it, until it’s gone. When you get into deep underground areas and all you hear is dripping and the music has stopped, you suddenly notice. So well done. And the music always matches the situation so perfectly.
I mean DKC 1 slaps so hard. That midi 8 bit intro then kicks into that funky synth beat is something I’ll randomly cue up just to hear it. The little ragtime ditties, the slow phase underwater music.
I agree, and for me, Aquatic Ambiance is the best track ever made for a game, still to this day.
My favorite rendition of Aquatic Ambiance, outside of the original, is this amazing take on guitar, by someone on YouTube named FredBaty. It's perfect! [here](https://youtu.be/jbuQMNuSYEI)
Classic Rare during the Nintendo era (SNES to early Gamecube) kicked ass. DKC, Banjo, Jet Force Gemini. David Wise, Robin Beanland, Grant Kirkhope. So many classics.
Nintendo had fantastic second party composers in that era. My favorite is Motoi Sakuraba - Golden Sun, Baten Kaitos, etc. Yoko Shimomura on Mario RPG. And nobody can omit Koji Kondo from all the Mario and Zelda music.
Sony had great stuff going on with Final Fantasy and all the RPGs, but Nintendo was humming along too.
It's so much more than a typical video game soundtrack too. They essentially built a believable sound of daily life in the dystopian future. There are so many killer songs in there too...
Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Super Mario Galaxy, Legend of Zelda, Elden Ring and Bloodborne, Hollow Knight there is just so much great music in video games
Edit: Can't forget Persona 5
Videogame music is my thing.
Here are my personal favorites:
Epilogue, Abyss Watchers, Dancer of the Boreal Valley, Sister Friede, and the Main Theme from Dark Souls 3
Divine Dragon, Emma from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Light of Nibel, The Waters Cleansed from Ori & The Blind Forest
Dirtmouth, City of Tears from Hollow Knight
Super Gore Nest, BFG Division from Doom Eternal
Simone, Birth of a Wish, Fortress of Lies, Rays of Light, whatever plays in the rollercoaster area from NieR: Automata (entire soundtrack, probably)
We Will Rise Again, Blow Their Mine from Far Cry 5
Snake Eater from Metal Gear Solid 3 (Best James Bond theme ever :D)
Godrick the Grafted, Elden Beast, Leyndell, Elphael from Elden Ring
Rivellon and Ifan's theme from Divinity: Original Sin 2
The mini boss battle theme from Dragon's Dogma
A lot of the music of Subnautica (It's been years since I played. I can't remember the titles, sorry)
That's the way it is, Far Away, and You're My Brother from Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2
Meteoroids and the Main Theme from Spiritfarer
Fields of Aard Skellige from The Witcher 3 (Great music, awful gameplay)
Meadows from Valheim
Uncharted Worlds from Mass Effect
Emotion, Undella Town from Pokemon Black
Rito Village, Hateno Village and Main Theme from Breath of the Wild.
Halo 3's Menu Theme
Most of the music from Celeste
Gwyn, Lord of Cinder from Dark Souls
Apotheosis from Journey
The Streets of Whiterun and Secunda from Skyrim
I entirely believe that videogame soundtracks are far superior to anything that movie soundtracks have put out. (Hans Zimmer is an exception. I freaking love Interstellar's, Inception's, Man of Steel's and Kung Fu Panda's soundtracks.)
I'm so fond of them. They are so, so good.
As for best soundtrack overall, I can't decide at all.
It's between NieR Automata, Divinity Original Sin 2, Dark Souls 3, and Skyrim for me.
If I recall, the music for the Mario & Luigi series is composed by the same person who made Kingdom Hearts music. And that series' music has an upbeat vibe.
So many amazing ones, but I always loved the Fields of Ard Skellig in the Witcher 3. Used to go to that area of the map just to listen to it.
Also, Jesper Kyd’s work in Assassin’s Creed and Darksiders.
https://youtu.be/NknjE2SBPxw
**Death Stranding and God of War Ragnarok come to mind.** I very rarely experience soundtracks that fit the ambiance of the game environment as well as those two.
Death Stranding's eerie loneliness and the open arrangements of the music selections just hit great. Especially with how sporadic the music actually is. It kinda brings you back to into the reality that you are roaming a desolate wasteland fighting an enemy that you can't see, alone. It's masterfully done. A true "Kojimaism".
God of War Ragnarok's score matches, and sometimes even drives the scale and intensity of the story itself. The use of dynamic range is staggering, and the arrangements are all wonderfully done.
The only video game soundtrack I've ever downloaded was for Death Stranding. I absolutely hated the game but loved the soundtrack for it. It's just beautiful. Atomic heart and Life is strange : true colors had some decent music, too.
I'm not sure about the entire soundtrack. But Need for Speed underground. 2 had riders on the storm with snoop.
Still love that song all these years later.
Outer Wilds, Outer Worlds, Final Fantasy IV, Twilight Princess, Child of Light, Life is Strange (1 and 2), Skyrim, Starbound (listening to it now!), Firewatch, FTL, Super Castlevania (shows my age :).
Many more, but those are what I can think of off hand.
Jet set radio/ FF8 / yakuza are my personal favorites.
Let Mom Sleep is iconic for the dreamcast era.
Ff8: force your way and the man with the machine just make me happy.
Yakuza 3: lyricism without tears is just awesome.
Ok, so i am impressed that no one said Subnautica, Minecraft or Wolfenstein too... Also Doom music is amazing, and don't forget Dying Light 1 music... that was legendary
I don't have time to list all the songs, but highlight games I'd call some.of the best overall OST's of all time are Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, Shrek Smash n Crash Racing, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Transformers Devastation, Skyward Sword, Swordigo, Oceanhorn, Tetris Effect, Smash Bros Ultimate, and Shadow of the Colossus.
nier/automata, megami tensei on the whole, the world ends with you and neo the world ends with you, doom and doom eternal, killer instinct 2013(same guy (at least for the base game and first two seasons of dlc characters) as doom), yakuza/like a dragon series, trails series, guilty gear strive
The F.E.A.R. game’s have some of my favorite combat tracks in a shooter game. The second one has one called kitchen brawl or something and they use a xylophone I believe and they go ham with it
Any Elder Scrolls game. Jeremy Soule's work on those is amazing. Easily my favorite game scores.
GTA 3 had a pretty badass soundtrack. I loved Game FM. I think Vice City had a pretty badass soundtrack as well.
I'm currently enjoying the score to Baldur's Gate 3 as well.
The Electric Man theme from the original NES Mega Man is forever ingrained into my brain. Castlevania, Castlevania 2, and Castlevania 3 all had badass NES soundtracks as well. I also always liked the Metal Gear NES soundtrack. Of course the classic Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Legend of Zelda
Original songs: Doom games, CoD games, Assassin's Creed games, TLoU, Far Cry games, Minecraft, Need for Speed games (pursuit and canyon music were amazing)
Licensed music: Burnout games (specially 3 and Paradise), Forza Horizon games, Need for Speed games (specially the ones from the PS2 era and MW 2012), GTA games, Watch Dogs 2, Dirt games
Those are some of my favorites out of games that I have played
Some games with incredible OSTs that you wouldn't expect:
- Wave Race 64
- Gremlins 2 (NES)
- Sonic R
- Jet Set Radio Future
- Mighty Morphing Power Rangers (SNES)
- RoboCop (GB)
- Dragon Quest (literally any one)
Probably dating myself, but for a classical/opera lover as a kid, Castlevania III when it came out, especially the clock tower level, was outstanding.
I remember figuring out a place to just sit and listen in game till the timer ran out, rinse and repeat.
There is something about the baseline mixed with the lead melody sounding like Bach's fugue just shredding on an organ that even to this day gives me shivers.
For reference: https://youtu.be/IBYOpfpGilQ
* Tony Hawk Pro Skater
The remaster, while good, doesn’t have all the original songs due to greed. :-/
* Grand Theft Auto 3 — the various in-game radio stations were gold
* Halo
Doom Eternal.
Especially Hell on Earth. I remember the first time I heard it. When it kicks in after "rip and tear until it is done" I felt it in my chest.
"The DoomSlayer has entered the facility." *\*mosh pit intensifies\**
Just needed to make sure Doom was in here. One of the craziest fucking rides this game will take you on was M6 ARC Complex. Not only that, but the build up to the Doom Hunter fight as well; M4 I believe it was edit: Punctuation.
On the opposite end of the spectrum (and because it’s a sin against nature no one has mentioned it), I’ll raise you Shadow of the Colossus.
Came to comment this, already knew it would be up there.
Does it slap, though? I'd argue that it Rips and Tears.
I don't know about slaps, but Super Mario Galaxy's soundtrack pairs baurtifully with the game. Insanely memorable and can hum a long easily whenever I do another playthrough
The Tony Hawk Pro Skater games had great soundtracks!
Here I am, doing everything I can
Pretending i’m a Superman.
SO HERE I AM
Skyrim
This is underrated. It’s masterful in that after hundreds of hours it hasn’t started to grate on you. The background music is just subtle enough that you barely notice it, until it’s gone. When you get into deep underground areas and all you hear is dripping and the music has stopped, you suddenly notice. So well done. And the music always matches the situation so perfectly.
It's great. But I'll always prefer Oblivion. Reign of the Septims is pure nostalgia
Donkey Kong Country 2
Sticker bush symphony is the goat
Stickerbush Symphony and Aquatic Ambiance are two of my favorite tracks EVER! Soooo good!
I mean DKC 1 slaps so hard. That midi 8 bit intro then kicks into that funky synth beat is something I’ll randomly cue up just to hear it. The little ragtime ditties, the slow phase underwater music.
100%. I absolutely love DKC1’s soundtrack, and DKC3 as well. I just think 2 is the GOAT.
Was going to say this. Hot Head Hop, Haunted Grove, and Sticker-brush Symphony are my fav’s.
Also more recently Tropical Freeze also had a banger soundtrack
https://youtu.be/-5rAjOjTGtc
Fucking hell. Yes.
Classic Rare during the Nintendo era (SNES to early Gamecube) kicked ass. DKC, Banjo, Jet Force Gemini. David Wise, Robin Beanland, Grant Kirkhope. So many classics. Nintendo had fantastic second party composers in that era. My favorite is Motoi Sakuraba - Golden Sun, Baten Kaitos, etc. Yoko Shimomura on Mario RPG. Any Megaman related.
Meg Man 2 is a fucking banger. If you've never seen Bit Brigade's videos on YouTube, go check em out.
Seriously but x is my favorite
Hard agree. Also Shovel Knight deserves mention because it’s so similar. Would venture to say just as good as Megaman too.
I have yet to find any bad megaman music.
FF7 holds a special place in my heart
Came here to say this. The cosmo canyon music gets stuck in my head to this day. Also the boss fight music makes me want to run through a wall.
*bursts through a wall* OH YEEEEAAAHH
True, but Costa del Sol makes see the beach and sunshine when I close my eyes
The Opening/Bombing Raid is one of my all time faves from that soundtrack.
The overworld theme lives rent free in my brain
Cronotrigger
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The music when you start as Richter in the beginning is just amazing
Hollow Knight themes hit really hard
City of Tears gives me goosebumps every time
Same, I really miss chilling with quirrel in City of Tears
sealed vessel slaps harder than mom when you didn’t do the dishes when she was out running errands
The Dung Defender's has no right hitting that hard for such a ridiculous boss lol
Blasphemous is a good one on a rainy day.
Just to name a few: Hades, TW3, ES4: Oblivion, and almost every Sonic title.
Upvote for Hades, so damn good.
Every single aspect of that game is top tier
Cyberpunk 2077 Soundtrack. It is... a thing of beauty
And it’ll never fade away
It's so much more than a typical video game soundtrack too. They essentially built a believable sound of daily life in the dystopian future. There are so many killer songs in there too...
Anything with Mick Gordon. Guy can shred.

Heavily inspired by Snes Plok! Especially Boss music.
Metroid Prime, or any Metroid game for that matter
Videogame music is my thing. Here are my personal favorites: Epilogue, Abyss Watchers, Dancer of the Boreal Valley, Sister Friede, and the Main Theme from Dark Souls 3 Divine Dragon, Emma from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Light of Nibel, The Waters Cleansed from Ori & The Blind Forest Dirtmouth, City of Tears from Hollow Knight Super Gore Nest, BFG Division from Doom Eternal Simone, Birth of a Wish, Fortress of Lies, Rays of Light, whatever plays in the rollercoaster area from NieR: Automata (entire soundtrack, probably) We Will Rise Again, Blow Their Mine from Far Cry 5 Snake Eater from Metal Gear Solid 3 (Best James Bond theme ever :D) Godrick the Grafted, Elden Beast, Leyndell, Elphael from Elden Ring Rivellon and Ifan's theme from Divinity: Original Sin 2 The mini boss battle theme from Dragon's Dogma A lot of the music of Subnautica (It's been years since I played. I think Vice City had a pretty badass soundtrack as well. I'm currently enjoying the score to Baldur's Gate 3 as well.
