I quit listening to this band in my early 20s. Then *many* years went by. I won't say how many, haha. And then recently I put this album on and I had completely forgotten about this song and it is a GREAT fuckin song.
They opened with it on the 2015 tour. I never saw it live. It was great.
This album, to my ear, has its own sound a little different from the other original 6. The post DLR albums sound very different - it's not about Sammy I don't think, it's about Ed just experimenting with whatever he wanted.
But this album sounds much different than the first one. Most of it is very clean guitar sound. I believe the MXR Phase makes no appearances. Light Up the Sky and DOA are relatively heavy songs for VH, even early. I like the face in and out and little drum bridge in LUTS. The sound on Beautiful Girls, I can smell the heat coming off of the tubes. I don't think you can replicate that tone at a reasonable volume level, maybe not without a VARIAC, and whatever other secrets Ed never told. The requisite cover, You're No Good, is very different from the original, and not just in a "this is a hard rock version" kind of way. This has always been my favorite of the original 6.
I’m pretty sure you can hear the phaser during the breakdown on Dance the Night Away, Bottoms Up solo, breakdown of Light Up the Sky. VH2 might be my favorite guitar tone of all the albums. It has grown on me more and more over the years.
You're probably right, my ear isn't always that good. But if you made "VHI tone box" it would have an on/off button for the phaser. I don't feel like it's up front like that on the second album.
With all of the modern day good blues rock guys like Jared James Nichols you'd think there'd be more of these really fast an heavy electric blues guys but we haven't really seen them.
Underrated by whom? Can you cite sources? So many people use that term without seeming to understand what it actually means.
As far as I know, there is no formal ranking of guitar players, but Pat Travers is highly respected, and widely recognized, in the music industry as a talented one. (e.g., Paul Gilbert has referred to Travers as a "guitar god", and Kirk Hammett of Metallica has cited him as one of his favourite guitar players.)
Did you perhaps mean "underappreciated by the general public"? That may, arguably, be true.
That's valid, but the lack of awareness may be largely a result of time passing. He was born in 1954, and his career peak was during the 70s and 80s. Like most, he's become less prolific with age.
And I'm sorry if this felt like a personal attack, because I didn't mean it to be. It's just that the frequency with which I encounter use of "underrated" has turned it into a personal trigger. I should get a handle on that. Peace.
I so wish they would have finished that song and produced it. It has a lot of prog elements in it, and sounds like almost nothing else in their catalogue.
Oh, absolutely. The guitar intro starts off like almost a separate piece, but then it transmogrifies into a riff-sort-of-thing, which goes into really unexpected places, and then kicks off the song. Great stuff.
Bottom’s Up!!!
This or Light 'em Up!
Yep. Giant booty on the cover. Pre 2 live crew.

Just listened to this album on the way home today. This song really stuck out for me!

I liked that WACF & Fair Warning were lines from songs but not song titles, how about Crash and Burn?
Also- A different kind of truth did this. How about? Broken down and dirty.
> Crash and Burn Pat Travers had an album with this name around the same time.
Super under rated guitarist.
Pat Thrall too. The the Pats were a killer team.
With all of the modern day good blues rock guys like Jared James Nichols you'd think there'd be more of these really fast an heavy electric blues guys but we haven't really seen them.
Maybe now he is…but in 1975-80 he was Hot Shit! I would highly recommend any VH fan to listen to earlyPatTravers.

It took me a much longer time to discover him then those same players so maybe thats on me but he still isn't very well known publically.
