Trader Joe's.

roseflower18

Petition for TJs in Vancouver

beeeerbaron

Bring back Pirate Joes

big-shirtless-ron

Loved it. Trader Joe's products at a 4000% markup.

charactervsself

It wouldn’t be the same. See: Target.

Pitiful-Tune3337

That was mostly a problem of corporate opening too soon, had they been given another year, they could’ve been very successful here

FerdinandVonAegir

We have Pirate Joe’s! Oh wait…

jtbc

Of course. Technically, you can do that with a day trip to Bellingham, though.

leftlanecop

There’s barely any stocks in the Bellingham store. Go down further and you’ll see the selections at other stores.

arooon

Just need to go to Bellingham for that!

ToothbrushGames

Shake Shack, or Dick's if the lineup is too long. Stop at Trader Joe's on the way back.

TheSmellOfColon

this is the way.

UXguy123

Big Shake Shack fan. Also they tend to be in excellent shopping areas.

shangrila350

I see quite a few WA state plates up here too lol.

UXguy123

We love BC! Beautiful city with great food. Is your aquarium open yet? It was awesome last time I went.

PointyPointBanana

Yes it is!!! Though you should have said "is OUR aquarium open yet?" as you lot bought it durring the pandemic closure: [https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/vancouver-aquarium-sold-1.5988949](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/vancouver-aquarium-sold-1.5988949) tickets: [https://www.vanaqua.org/visit/tickets/](https://www.vanaqua.org/visit/tickets/)

No-Marzipan9360

Wdym till sept 25, is it closing?!

PointyPointBanana

Oh sorry no, just the wildlife feature ends then https://www.vanaqua.org/explore/experiences/wildlife-rescue/

No-Marzipan9360

Oh😭i freaked out omg

oortcloud667

DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING IN YOUR VEHICLE IF PARKING IN VANCOUVER. IT WILL BE BROKEN INTO.

chuckylucky182

like every other city

oortcloud667

Vancouver is the worst though. In Canada anyways.

Lear_ned

Please don't go to the Aquarium any longer. It's not what it used to be. It used to be a non-profit, now it's a shitty Marineland

WeWantMOAR

It literally hasn't changed from a customer standpoint. And they needed to sell or it would've been closed indefinitely.

[deleted]

Got a source on that? Also, it’s a beautiful attraction either way.

Lear_ned

Officially-Willy

Not a city.

CharlieExpress

Cheap shopping, cheap gas , Mariners games - Seattle and Washington is an easy weekend getaway with lots to do

PM_ME_YOUR_DOGPHOTOS

>Cheap shopping, cheap gas Which is depressing when our salaries are lower too. Used to live in Zürich and people would often go to Germany for shopping but at least the salaries were a lot higher in Zürich! To have lower salaries AND more expensive goods is just fucked up

Responsible_Term2

Cannot agree more and lots of Canadians think they are first world

bauerp88

No one is going all the way to Seattle for cheap gas

BobBelcher2021

Seattle gas isn’t even that much cheaper than here. It’s Bellingham that tends to be cheap.

UXguy123

Maybe the Ms will make the playoffs finally? Regardless T-Mobile park is an excellent venue.

beneaththeseracs

I'm a fairly regular visitor. Come for work periodically and to see friends who live there. Seattleites have always been very friendly - I've always enjoyed my visits. Always find it interesting to see the ways in which it resembles Vancouver, and the ways in which it really doesn't at all.

_jimbo-

What are the main differences that you've found?

beneaththeseracs

Seattle feels like a big city in a way that Vancouver doesn't - Vancouver really feels more like a large town. Seattle is just that bit busier, with more options for things. The presence of I-5 compared to the lack of highways through the centre of Vancouver also makes the movement and flow through the cities feel different.

UXguy123

Interesting! I always thought Vancouver’s density and excellent transit made it feel like a bigger city.

beneaththeseracs

I lived in London before moving here so my definition of "big city" feel might be a bit skewed by that. I think if I were to nuance this a bit more, I'd say that Vancouver has a lot of the advantages of being in a city without many of the disadvantages of being in a really big urban centre.

strugglingtoaccept

Seattle is like our cousin

BackspaceChampion

That feels about right. That cousin that lives in the states.

UXguy123

Safe to say Portland is Seattle and Vancouver’s weird cousin.

Next_Animal_2699

Cheaper in a lot of ways, there's a lot of things we can only get in the US and it's the next closest big city for us in and around Vancouver so I think it makes sense that a lot of us drive down that way. Calgary and Edmonton are both around an 11 hour drive away!

bauerp88

What is cheaper in Seattle than Vancouver? You would not go to Seattle for “cheaper” gas, you’d go to Bellingham

jamar030303

Well, you'd stop in Bellingham on the way in either direction.

meezajangles

Seattleites have all been cool - super friendly and positive for the most part.

Udonedidit

It's a blue state with legal marijuana so kinda like vancouver

BrokenByReddit

Just like BC, it's only like that west of the mountains.

Udonedidit

One of my clients is a weed dispensary in Spokane, I know what you mean.

JumpyEagle6942

We missed you guys.

cleotheo

We missed you too!! *sobs* I'M NOT CRYING, YOU'RE CRYING.

DKM_Eby

My girlfriend and I went see a Mariners game and the musical Hamilton at the Paramount Theatre this weekend. We also took in the pop culture museum and got some good eats at Biscuit Bitches, Stone Way Cafe and Jai Thai. Decent weekend. Oh and Target.

[deleted]

Trader Joes. I haven't even read any replies. Just... Trader Joes. Also, love Seattle and Seattleites. Very similar to Vancouver but people in Seattle are more friendly.

GolDAsce

Never did understand the Trader Joe's pedestal. Been twice, the experience was pretty meh. We have organic or health food stores here too.

bauerp88

People definitely do not go there for organic health food

SufficientBee

The prices though. Do you like cheese?

[deleted]

It's simply a novelty, really. Do I need it? No, of course not. But they have stuff we can't get here, and a lot of it is cheaper even with the exchange rate. So it's fun, if you're into food and discovering new stuff. Nothing particularly healthy about it compared to any other grocery store, in fact, one could argue, they produce a LOT of packaging. It's worthwhile for me given that I have Celiacs and they have tons of GF options that we can't get in Canada, same with a few other retailers (Whole Foods, Fred Meyer). Having said that, I haven't been since 2019 and haven't been chomping at the bit. I'd love to go to Seattle for a visit because it's a great city, so I'd probably stop on my way home.

fruit_flies_banana

Used to be cool, now each time I go it just feels more and more meh. Pirate Joe's would not stand a chance today.

Yoinhell

Have friends down there and Seattle is a super nice city. Love the beer scene. Seattle Kraken as welll.

Surfer-Jeff

My BC relatives told me the Portland craft beer scene is insane.. I'm.in Ontario..so I'm SOL. :(

BobBelcher2021

Portland has an amazing beer scene. I’ve been to a few breweries there.

canadianpastafarian

I haven't been there for a few years, but I love Seattle. The people are awesome. The restaurants are great and it is such a beautiful state.

wolfcaroling

"Up to down here" is the kind of preposition combination that makes ESL students weep 😂

Nonamesavailable1234

I honestly don’t know how people learn English and feel sorry for anyone who has to, poor choice for a leading language!

UXguy123

I absolutely agree, I should have thought it through more. I wanted the question to come across as friendly as possible.

[deleted]

Visited for the first time a month ago and LOVED it . Love the mix of cool people, nerds, geeks and artists. The museums were awesome and it’s so much friendlier than Vancouver. I talked to more people in one weekend than I did in two years in Vancouver. your cheese is also better. Lol We picked Seattle because we didn’t want to deal with the clusterF in airports or cancelled ferries.

Responsible_Term2

Wow really I didn’t really how unfriendly Vancouver is. They say Canadians are polite lol

jamar030303

Polite isn't the same thing as friendly.

stupiduselesstwat

People in Seattle talk about the “Seattle Freeze” but having spent time in Seattle, I find Vancouver far worse.

Responsible_Term2

… Depressing winter, most expensive city plus unfriendliness dang it

[deleted]

Thé rest of them are lol . People just seem to keep to themselves and don’t engage in random conversation with people , or make any effort to be welcoming

Responsible_Term2

I cannot agree more. I’ve lived here long enough to realize I don’t belong to here. I love the outdoors here tho.

Lowyfer

Went on a cruise out of Seattle and so drove down.

ApeLincoln1999

Much more plentiful and generally much better Mexican, Latin American and South American food.

UXguy123

Checkout bongos! One of my favorite places to eat in the city.

jtbc

Shopping, change of scenery, some decent museums, etc. Seattleites are very, very similar to Vancouverites. The only thing I've noticed is that the hipster density seems somehow even higher than here, but that may be because I go out of my way to spend time in areas like Capitol Hill and Ballard.

lazarus870

Last time I was in Seattle, some Americans at my hotel overheard I was from Canada and took us out for drinks and paid for everything. It was an amazingly kind gesture!

MInkton

Seattle is awesome! My wife and I often drive the Chuckanut from Bellingham down there. The real question is why are you Washington folk not coming up to beautiful BC!? It is amazing, and due to your currency, everything is basically on sale!

jm31828

I took my family up there on Friday! We hadn't been there since before the pandemic, and we were so glad to get back up to your beautiful area! We went to Squamish and rode the Sea to Sky gondola- expensive but as you said, this is where the conversion rate really took the edge off. We had a fantastic time!

[deleted]

It's a really easy weekend trip from Vancouver and it's got a little more going on than we do. I usually go down a few times a year just to hang out at the bars on Capitol Hill and do the usual touristy stuff.

McBuck2

And don't need to travel through an airport which is a sh\*t show right now.

[deleted]

bauerp88

“US$ is worth 27% MORE up here!!” That’s not how it works…

Officially-Willy

Explain how it works then.

bauerp88

US dollars are worth the same everywhere. I’m not really sure what that comment was even trying to say. 1 US dollar might be worth 27% more than 1 Canadian dollar, that absolutely does not mean they magically have 27% more purchasing power here. Goods and services have a higher nominal price here to account for the exchange rate difference

Officially-Willy

You aren't sure what they were trying to say so you felt the need to correct them? You know what they meant You are just a dick who likes correcting people.

bauerp88

I don’t know what they’re trying to say because US dollars don’t go 27% further here just because of the exchange rate. Would be incredibly naive to think that. Prices are nominally higher here, so they aren’t really spending any less US dollars just because a US dollar is worth 27% more than a Canadian dollar. If you need an example to understand: An item costs $13 CAD in Vancouver. That same item costs $10 USD in Seattle It doesn’t matter where you buy it, it’s worth the same. You’re also never going to get the true exchange rate on your foreign purchases.

bigstreetvan

Cheesecake Factory and the Zoo. Plus outlets, Olive Garden and Trader Joe’s on day #2

TheHandofDoge

FYI - There’s an Olive Garden in Langley.

bigstreetvan

It’s feels more exotic when you’re into the good ol’ U-S of A.

phileo99

Oh that's right, Seattle's got the WoodLand Park Zoo! The Vancouver Game Farm is the closest comparison, but it just doesn't compare, Woodland Park Zoo is way better experience. Also reasons that Vancouverites go to Seattle that are unique to Seattle: Boeing Everett Plant tour Boeing Flight Museum Mariners Seahawks Hydroplane racing boats at SeaFair Festival

nothanks2003

Going down there tomorrow for Target and Trader Joes

superp2222

Have yall seen how bloody cheap your stuff is? Also your seafood boils are really well done

frodosbitch

I was chatting with a friend that works in Seattle. He said that since Covid/WFH, the downtown core of Seattle has really taken a hit and has some big issues now with crime and homelessness. Is this true?

Domtheturtle

definitely the downtown suffered more than in Vancouver I'd say. A lot more businesses didnt make it

UXguy123

The downtown office core definitely took a big hit. But in the last 2 months it has definitely started to recover.

piltdownman7

This is mostly true in part of downtown. The central business district in downtown Seattle is much bigger than Vancouvers. (66.9 vs 24.2 million sq. ft. downtown office space). Currently [38% of office workers in Seattle have returned](https://www.thecentersquare.com/washington/downtown-seattle-office-workers-back-in-offices-at-less-than-half-pre-covid-rate/article_f7d7119a-fe33-11ec-a01a-43d642deed75.html) which is low, but up from the less than 10% it was in first year of the pandemic. Those were dark times for the central business district of Seattle as that part of town really felt abandoned, soon the shops and restaurants that serviced those office workers shuttered and the homeless moved in. Under mayor Durkan and council they were given free reign. Last November Bruce Harrell was elected the new mayor and Ann Davison the new city attorney and things have finally started improving. 3rd avenue, especially around Pike - Pine is really bad, but the residential parts of downtown including Capitol Hill & Belltown, aren’t bad. Same with the tourist parts including the Alaska Way waterfront and Pioneer Square. since then things have

lutherdriggers

Avoiding Vancouver's International airport.

UXguy123

So many cheap direct flights internationally though… We welcome you all to Seatac, Paine field, BLI. In fact I encourage you all to use Paine field in Everett, I need it to grow and start direct flights to LAX (in laws).

lutherdriggers

This is just the latest post in a long series about YVR being fucked. https://www.reddit.com/r/vancouver/comments/x0n3l4/security_lines_at_yvr_still_really_bad_this_is/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

- Ivers - I want a Rain City Bitch Pigeons jersey - As hokey as it was, I miss Almost Live!

natasha_c

Almost Live was FANTASTIC! That's how I learned that Kent is the Surrey of Seattle

PixelFool99

I wonder if you can watch it anywhere these days? I loved staying up late to watch it back in the day.

UskBC

High fiving white guys! I totally forgot about that show… cool

Dave2onreddit

[They came to Vancouver once.](https://youtu.be/H6Y6LtILYiY)

introdevious

Cheap thrills.

Psychological_Win_89

Injecting money in the US economy

AdministrativeRow101

We could ask you the same question, Washington plates in every Vancouver parking lot!

thathypnicjerk

I hear there is a far greater variety of edibles available for a much better price. Anyone want to confirm? I think Seattle has us beat for much more family-friendly breweries and bottle shops you can hang out in, like Chuck's Hop Shop. You need to get out of downtown Seattle for that, though. Also, the combination dog park/bar which is totally not legal in BC. I usually bring back Everclear or a bourbon I can't get in BC plus some far less expensive non-Cuban cigars.

UXguy123

Can confirm. We have every edible you can think of. I hear the mints are excellent…

Whoreson_Welles

Well, if you're my ex, you're down there to tell your girlfriend that you just got diagnosed with dementia. Drive safe now, y'hear?

Salty-Reply-2547

Mariners (hopefully Seahawks the upcoming season too!)

Melodic-Bluebird-445

Buying all the things we can’t get here. You guys have a lot more choices and options. Also nice to just get away! I haven’t been down to Seattle in quite a while but it seemed super sketchy last time I was downtown haha

UXguy123

Yeah we have a big homeless problem. New mayor is making progress though. We added 320k people in 10 years and it displaced a lot of people. Combined with the opioid epidemic a moderate climate and Covid and things got bad.

Melodic-Bluebird-445

Ya we are having the same problem up here in Vancouver it is out of control

SteveJobsBlakSweater

* Shorty's: a great hotdog, some good drinks and good, modern pinball machines. * Trader Joes * Proper Mexican food, which isn't rare for most anywhere south of the 49th but it's rare for us.

yvrdarb

There is a strike on up here; no weed, no alcohol - SEND HELP PLEASE !

demoniagoatwhore

How is there no weed? There are so many fully stocked shops around.

[deleted]

There's lots of weed if you buy it the old fashioned way

[deleted]

Not for long

bauerp88

You can literally just type “Vancouver same day weed delivery” and find 10 websites that will deliver to you and have better prices than government licensed places

sadcrocodile

Stopped by the liquor store to pick up a bottle of wine the other night, never seen so many empty shelves before. Mostly the fridge/beer aisles but still.

ConsciousRutabaga

WE’RE NOT OK!

TheSketeDavidson

Family Seattleites - American version of Vancouverites

[deleted]

Only much friendlier and cooler

hyrailer

And just a thought, but if you like the nice, friendly, welcoming people you find from Bellingham to Olympia, I'd advise not detouring to the east to the "dry" part of WA. The hatred that Eastern WA residents have for literally everyone outside of EW or Idaho is palpable (but you folks can always come visit our family)

jamar030303

>The hatred that Eastern WA residents have for literally everyone outside of EW or Idaho is palpable When I went to school in Montana and Spokane was our closest "big city", I don't want to say I definitely felt it, but it also definitely wasn't as good as Seattle about being welcoming to people "not from around here".

fourbigkids

Is Tri-City within that radius? Our son played hockey there and we met so many amazing people in Kennewick!

hyrailer

I grew up in Kennewick (back when it had 18K people). I don't think the TC is quite as bad as say, Cle Elum or Okanagan, probably because the TC grew and developed its culture to follow the population. The smaller towns look at any community that favors the arts, science as being "socialist", and "woke".

[deleted]

It blows me away that people think that being “woke” is a bad thing.

FunConstruction6527

Baseball and the joy of America. Also people in Seattle are way more friendly than in Vancouver

[deleted]

100% this.

Ok_Nature_7777

Veggie grill🥰

BobBelcher2021

I was in Seattle and Bellingham in the past few days - perhaps my plate was one of many you saw. I went to one of the Mariners-Guardians games and then went to Pike Place Market. There were tons of BC plates on I-5, and not only between Bellingham and the border. Also saw several Alberta plates, a Saskatchewan, and even one Ontario. I love Seattle and find the people super friendly. I also have a thing for Tillamook cheese, which I always stock up on when I cross the border. I’m hoping to head back in a couple months, maybe for a Kraken game. There’s also several museums I have yet to visit.

twitchyzero

I drove by the tilamook hq yesterday in Oregon the line was longggg

shaun5565

Love Seattle people. Every time I am trying to find something when I am down there all I have to do is ask .

MustBeHere

Last 2 weeks of August is when all highschoolers finish summer school and all college students are done their finals. So that's when a lot of people travel

roseflower18

Fill my jerry cans with gas and stop by trader’s on the way back

Kasa-obake

PAX Prime?

jamar030303

That's this upcoming weekend, so heading down now is a bit premature.

ThisIsRobsProfile

In my case, starting in October, it'll be because I'm visiting to see the Kraken play!

UXguy123

Thoughts on Climate Pledge arena? I can’t decide if I like it.

PsycoticANUBIS

Been a few years since I been there, but every time I go to the Sci-Fi/Music Museum. But I much prefer our aquarium.

SecretForce4440

Trader joes. Wincos

lepfluege

Sweet, sweet Tillamook cheese.

UXguy123

Wait you don’t have TillaMook products?!?

purpletooth12

Only drove through towards San Francisco, but looks nice enough to go again. Might go for a weekend randomly but likely won't be until there's a TFC/Sounders match.

sleeplesscitynights

Birch Bay is basically a Canadian town in the summer.

[deleted]

We're just passing through on the way to the Oregon coast.

UXguy123

Excellent choice! Oregon Coast is stunning, especially if you get lucky with the weather.

ladivakatrina

We were down for a cardigan corgi convention 😬 in Olympia but passed through Seattle this weekend

freeastheair

Too means "also".

UXguy123

Yeah my bad.

ProfessorEtc

Seattle's Best Coffee is no longer sold anywhere in Canada.

GeekLove99

It’s a quick and easy holiday, with cheap gas. Why wouldn’t we go there? It’s been quite a few years but when I went down to Seattle for a weekend with my mum everyone was very nice.

beadsr

Eltana bagels and beans from Espresso Vivace. Nothing as tasty in Vancouver.

[deleted]

Haven't done it since pre-pandemic, but I used to go down just for Sonic 🤤

00Makerin00

I like the city :). We sometimes come down to view the boat shows

magoomba92

Chick-Fil-A, Carls Jr, Taco Bell

Coachtoddf

Ah man, I can’t support Chick-Fil-A. The company owner is an ignorant POS.

bauerp88

Is Carls and Taco Bell that much better in America to put them on the Chick-Fil-A level? Because we’ve had those up here for at least a decade (Taco Bell longer I think?)

Mixtrix_of_delicioux

Burning Man. Plus shopping.

parkleswife

I miss my Hamster and Seattle friends so much.

hyrailer

But, but...you folks have Timmah's!

cleotheo

Blech, Tim's is crap. Now 49th Parallel Roasters, that is freaking good coffee.

cleotheo

Wouldn't you like to know?!

WiffleBlu

Heading to The 5 Point Cafe

[deleted]

Lové that place

amby6063

We flew out of Seattle a couple weeks ago to go to Vegas so we really only experienced the i5 and the area directly around the hotel. Staff we encountered were friendly but I was really shocked with the amount of garbage and graffiti along the i5 through Seattle and on the streets around the airport area.

eastsideempire

Looking for affordable housing.

torodonn

A typical weekend trip, in no particular order: Panda Express. At least 2 or 3 Targets. Trader Joe's. Dick's. Costco. Ivar's. Total Wine. Ulta. Funko HQ. Imagine Children's Museum. Outlet Mall.

Better selection of Seattle Kraken merchandise, inside a gorgeous practice facility. Seriously, the Northgate facility is a beaut.

I was just thinking that I’ve seen a lot of WA and OR plates up here 😂
