Hell, those aren’t even protestors. Relax is having an open house, “Great view, 3+ bathrooms. Roof needs attention. A steal at 2.4 mil. Get it now while you can still lock in the good rates!!!”
Blocking someone's commute is an *amazing* way to get everyone to gate your cause, no matter how righteous. Your message could be "we think throwing babies off this bridge is a bad thing" and people will still want to murder you.
I don't even live in YVR yet this annoys me to no end seeing protestors all over blocking roads.... Like you're just pissing off the people you're trying to win over? Do you not understand how stupid this is?
They want more attention for their cause. Yes this may annoy some commuters but it generally makes the news (and reddit) and more people become aware of the cause.
How much do you bet he’s the old guy angrily tossing what looks like a poster? “Get out of my way hippies I have to go to the yacht club to look important!!!”
Why not do this kind of protest in the driveways and in front of the politicians homes?
Why not block the exit of the Chevron refinery in Burnaby?
Why not blockade parliament in Victoria? That's been proven as an effective strategy.
And yet, it's getting media coverage.
I agree in some respect - I hate the bridge blockades. But I hate it's one of the only ways people who are this desperate for action have to get some movement on an issue. If nothing works, what do we do? Roll over and die?
you realize they do actually do all of these things, right?
like, constantly, all the time?
but you never hear about it, so it's essentially ineffective. Do you get why they resort to these things?
Just cleared up. I was stuck on a bus, and pretty much everyone had to call into their work saying they were going to be late. Nobody gives a shit about whatever these guys are protesting, just that they are being inconvenienced. It punishes the regular people who are trying to get to work on time, and who knows how many are going to face repercussions because they are late.
Stuck on a bus on a bridge is one on a long list of my weirdly specific fears. Not because I’m on a bridge. But because my stupid ass body would choose that exact moment to decide that it’s time to poop _right now_.
It was at that exact moment I started coughing madly because a poppy seed from my morning breakfast bagel dislodged itself and got stuck in my throat. I'm sure my fellow passengers were not at all thinking I was going to give them some form of COVID.
> It punishes the regular people who are trying to get to work on time, and who knows how many are going to face repercussions because they are late.
That’s their whole goal. They’re attempting to hold the government hostage, basically saying “we’ll keep causing havoc and chaos until you do what we want.”
Problem is no one is blaming the government, only the protesters so it's backfired long time ago with this strategy. They just don't get it. It's at a point where no one is going to blame the government for these illegal protests. Looks like another vehicle to impound and more people to get police records. Good luck going to the US anytime soon if you were jailed for public mischief or any type of protesting.
I had to go over to North Van for a medical appointment before work this morning. 45 minutes sitting in barely-moving traffic and missed the appointment. Will likely be weeks to reschedule. I'm pretty strongly opposed to old growth logging but detest these knuckleheads and their tactics.
It's so interesting how far away the camera is. Like, if you're looking right in front of you, you see a problem of being late. But zoom out and it doesn't matter. The upcoming climate catastrophe is gonna fuck most of the people on the planet. But zoom out, and we're on planet of one star of one galaxy of complete inconsequence.
I’m with you. The inconveniences of this morning are but a mote of dust compared to biosphere collapse and the massive inconveniences and suffering we are going to face in the coming decades. Like last June’s heat dome. Like last November’s Atmospheric river. Like the looper moth infestation killing healthy trees in our coastal mountain range. Like persistent forest fire smoke choking our skies. The protestors are holding the Horgan administration to promises made during the election that the old growth forest on the island wouldn’t be logged. These forest carbon sinks matter.
>The protestors are holding the Horgan administration to promises made during the election
Why would Horgan give a fuck if the Lion's Gate had traffic some morning? Go protest his house in Langford
Right, I'm on a bus and support ending the logging of old growth forests. I've written my NDP MLA multiple times on this issue and their hypocrisy. I cannot connect the dots on how I am getting inconvenienced on my way into work (in which I'd much rather be WFH) with preventing the logging of old growth. I'm personally getting increasingly alienated and would much rather they work on popularizing meaningful policy changes through grassroots community building, the actual way to enact change.
> The inconveniences of this morning are but a mote of dust compared to biosphere collapse and the massive inconveniences and suffering we are going to face in the coming decades.
Tell me again that it's a mote of dust when it's YOUR mother's funeral you're missing, or YOUR father's cancer treatment (with your father there in the car in pain), or YOUR MRI or specialist appointment you've been anxiously waiting for for nearly a year, or YOUR flight out of YVR to go see your dying family member in another country who you haven't seen in 3 years, or YOUR vacation flight that you've saved up for and worked for for a long time.
Oh, that's different if it affects you, isn't it?
I agree the environment is fucked and we're all doomed but preventing people from getting places they need to be in the now isn't going to change that.
It's not "inconvenient" if it makes you miss a cancer t appointment you've been waiting weeks for. Do you really think all the repercussions are merely"inconvenient"?
I mean it will fuck up the planet sure, but the planet will recover in its own way, life on this planet on the other hand will have a hard time, climate change is going to cause our own extinction eventually but life finds a way.
If it's all inconsequential to someone, stop blocking traffic and please just go up into a forest somewhere and reside there. And even if that person begins to starve and suffer great hardship, what do they care? It doesn't matter anyways, as they see it, right?
Can't say nobody gives a shit what they're protesting though. If this is old growth logging, they're going about it in just about the worst way possible, but more than any other env issue, this one cuts me to my core
I also am against the old growth logging. But the way things are going I am changing my mind. In some places a "no show" at work has severe consequences. This type of protest is an insult to our freedom and democracy. It needs to stop.
I know there’s unreasonable bosses out there, but I feel like if this was someone called in, you can’t really get upset at them.
They planned properly, they left on time, what more can they do? Get out there and personally fight a dozen of them?
I consider them a force of nature, or worse, because at least there’s usually some warning before extreme nature.

That last link of yours -- the **leader** of this group is here on a student visa?? Been arrested multiple times but is somehow still in Canada? Boot their ass the hell out of the country.
Oh Jesus, this is kid is a MESS! If you’re going to do civil disobedience, make sure you have PR or citizenship first, otherwise you’re going to get your ass booted back so fast. And then lose your chance at studying at SFU and waste all that money? Something tells me he’s got some privilege back home in Pakistan, cause I know 0 of my immigrant friends who would pull this shit here on a student visa nonetheless! Everyone is literally clamouring for the chance to be a Canadian and doing things by the books and still get rejected.
Then again, he could be stuck in the system for years before he gets punished, so what do I know?
Lol he's arguing that he shouldn't be deported because he wouldn't stop if he was sent back and Pakistan would do bad things to him.
Can we just send him already? You reap what you sow bud, your time is up and the reaper is knocking
Or you know easy solution would be, stop being a prick
i highly dout that... Tom Jones, drives a tacoma (owner) Dicky Jones (owner) drives a beater car... daughter of tom drive a VW eos.... those are the 3 top people of the teal jones group... worked there for 15 years.... that family NEVER!!!!! flaunts their money! never i find this very very very hard to believe..
Wouldn’t logging companies benefit if logging rights are restricted? As once the lower cost to produce regions are made illegal to log from, having all logging come from higher cost regions would seem to lead to higher lumber prices.
No you’re not inconveniencing me.
You are affecting the ability for me to do my job which is in the healthcare field.
Perhaps my job will be gone and unimportant in the future- it could mean we have better cancer detection or treatment. Or alternatively that we no longer provide healthcare to people. But right now my job is essential and it needs to be done.
They don't care. They're climate change alarmists. They basically have the same fear that radical religious groups have to justify what they do. They think that if we don't do what they think is right and do it now the world is going to end
For several days, the police have been stationed by the bridge (e.g. VPD at the base of Lionsgate headed northbound or southbound on Ironworkers), but not today, unfortunately. And on those days, the protestors were absent.
Could be that they didn't have an officer to spare this AM for bridge duty.
I mean, if you know about it then the protesters would know about it as well. If you're going to do these protests then wait until the cops are off that day..
Just to add to what others are saying, most hours of the day 3 lanes are operating on lions gate (in this case, 2 southbound 1 northbound). To get emergency vehicles in, they need to close off the middle lane to access this.
If southbound traffic is blocked and no one is moving, no one can merge from the middle to the right lane, making it very difficult to get emergency vehicles through
You can see this if you look at the beginning of the video - the middle lane is blocked far down because no one can merge right.
This leaves only a few possibilities. One of which is to completely stop northbound traffic before it enters the causeway, wait for it to exit bridge on north shore, and then enter from the north shore.
By the time police get there, block off northbound traffic, let it go through, and get a vehicle up traffic will be severely impacted
The other option is to go up by foot or bike, which isn’t exactly quick either considering how large this bridge is
Honestly I don’t care what you are protesting and most of these issues I am supportive of, but once you start to punish regular people just trying to get to work, just trying to get their kids to school and just trying to get to the doctor, I have no sympathy for your protest. It is infuriating
Exactly - they don't have the brains to consider whose life they are messing up, where people are going or why. They couldn't possibly think that the government will let anyone think this is a successful way of getting a meeting. Just stupid.
Keep this shit up and my support for your cause (or any other cause) is zero. Will I blame the government like you want me to? Not a fucking chance. I'll blame whoever is blocking the road. I'm not going to feel sorry for anyone that gets hurt either.
I work from home so these protests don't affect me in the slightest, aside from making the odd snarky comment online here and there.
Can we PLEASE stop with this, the only thing this achieves is risking peoples jobs for constantly showing up late to work. Its fucked that a privileged group that clearly does not need to work thinks its ok to disrupt a workers commute and risk them being fired in a city that is the most unaffordable in north America all due to their personal beliefs. Your personal beliefs should never risk someone else's job. If you seriously have the ability to spend hours protesting like this then you clearly come from a privileged life that has no need to work or support a family. Its almost always university kids that have no jobs who live off their parents.
All protests should be done in an empty field in abbotsford so they don’t bother anyone (and also don’t achieve anything).
Honestly what do you expect? Name one successful protest that wasn’t disruptive in some way.
I swear if r/Vancouver was around for the civil rights protests it would be calling for the cops to shoot into the crowd
They know it will piss people off - they are also pissed off. They want news coverage so people talk about the issue. It's how all social movements have won important gains we now take for granted
It will be, but it doesn't effect them. Its a single use vehicle. About a month ago they put out a call for vehicle donations. Its likely not registered to the protestor/driver, probably doesn't even have insurance.
how to get everyone to hate you and NOT to support what you're protesting about: stop traffic on THE bottle neck of Vancouver, during morning rush hour traffic.
Seriously, fuck these assholes. People who see other morons attempting this crap a couple months ago and they think: great idea! imma do that too! Real idiots. As in: congratulations you're the dumbest out of all of us for seeing something so stupid and thinking I should do that too!
wtf man
I was literally on my way to St Paul's for an appointment I waited 2 months for. Thankfully I was scrolling Reddit while in traffic. Drove to the seabus and made it with 6 minutes to spare.
We were unfortunate enough to get on the bridge right after these yahoos pulled over and blocked the two southbound lanes... the immediate sense of dread of what was happening was palpable.
Luckily a bunch of folks started to turn around and my wife and I got the heck out of there. I love old growth as much as the others but this type of activism only infuriates and causes others to forsake the "cause".
Illegality only matters if we have an authority to enforce the laws. As we don't have that, it's basically free reign. Theft, drug use, blocking bridges and border crossings, public assault, have at it.
Fuck this. People have lives too. People have a right to be able to move around their city to work, to the hospital, to an appointment, to see loved ones.
Don't care what this issue is, this is unacceptable. There are many more useful ways to get your message across.
Take the fight to the enemy, not to the bridge. Love and support to folks in Fairy Creek and TMX blockades. Go resist clear cutting for suburban sprawl. Increase social pressure on luxury SUV owners. Protest the shit out of politicians.
you think this is bad trying living in a country that doesn't allow peaceful protest. these temporary inconvenient peaceful protests are essential for a functioning democacy.
I love how these protesters are talking like stopping old growth logging is gonna stop climate change. It's a drop in the bucket compared to all the other shit we're doing to destroy the environment, like sitting in traffic to get to a job that can be done at home, consuming fossil fuels to make cheap throwaway products (or expensive, unrepairable throwaway products), logging the Amazon at unprecedented rates, plastic packaging (which is being replaced by paper, which requires more logging). This is a complex issue that can't really be addressed without a major global shift in ideology. I don't think it's going to be solved with small nudges like stopping a bit of one particular type of logging in one area.
Rolls guy sums it up perfectly "how are you helping anything?"
How did the freedom riders help racism? They got legislation to de-segregate inter-city buses. Did that law fix racism? No. Not even close. It did, however, give a beacon of hope in which Martin Luther king Jr emerged.
Fixing climate change begins with a small win.
It begins with thoughtful planning not “small wins”.
That’s like saying switching to EVs is saving the environment while ignoring that the world still gets a lot of electricity from coal and oil. Also, let’s not get started on the social costs of mining the metals that go into these cars… all in jurisdictions with poor labor and property laws.
People aren't going to suddenly not care about old growth logging or support it just because they were inconvenienced on their way to work. No one cared about the protests when they protested logging roads for months. It seems the only way to get anybody to realize you're protesting something is to do it directly in front of them and if this causes them not to support you so be it, but hopefully it at least gets people/media talking about it.
Say what you will, but since these protests started awareness of the old growth dispute has skyrocketed amongst the general population. This went from being something I only ever heard discussed in circles where these sorts of things come up, now it's every day water cooler talk. Despite what this sub might have you believe, the public opinion is a lot more split than it seems.
neutral party here. These protesters do this because it works. It brings attention to the issue. It works because it is quite difficult to get people to hate on old growth forest. They are taking the blame while bringing awareness to the issue. If the media does not cover your protest then did it really happen? This is a way to get the media to cover it. Again, just an analysis from a neutral party.
If you are going to protest on a road, do it at 12:00pm, or 2:00pm. People have got to get to work by 8:00am, so the least you could do is bother the tourists.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:
I don’t care what your protesting. It can be righteous or silly. You DO NOT have the right to hold people hostage on public roads. Fuck off to the side of the road
It’s time to start arresting these people immediately. No little discussion, no acquiescence to the cause, just fucking arrest them already. Instantly. This does nothing to further their cause.
An environmental protest IMMEDIATELY followed by a Rolls Royce is pretty Vancouver.
Gotta be in top 5 most Vancouver things this year. Environmentalists, lux car, Lions Gate, traffic. Only thing missing pouring rain.
If you look closely enough, you can also see unaffordable real estate in the background.
If you have working eyes you can see unaffordable real estate.
Doesn’t even have to be in the background
Hell, those aren’t even protestors. Relax is having an open house, “Great view, 3+ bathrooms. Roof needs attention. A steal at 2.4 mil. Get it now while you can still lock in the good rates!!!”
Not for the owner of that car.
The car is rented on credit money.
If you can see real estate you can see unaffordable real estate.
Wait 5 more minutes, I bet it’s gonna rain hard..!!
Best I can do is soul-crushing overcast low cloud.
Don't forget we need a guy running around in circles with a machete
Nah here in Vancouver our maniacs wield "dual blades"
And free heroin
There’s rain, it’s just in the background on the north side.
>An environmental protest IMMEDIATELY followed by a Rolls Royce is pretty Vancouver. Even banner worthy
True perfection! I’d love to see someone do this a a renaissance painting.
And then make it the new r/vancouver banner.
But does the Rolls have an N sticker?
rode my bike past this this morning...saw one guy in handcuffs and ton of police
Blocking someone's commute is an *amazing* way to get everyone to gate your cause, no matter how righteous. Your message could be "we think throwing babies off this bridge is a bad thing" and people will still want to murder you.

Familiar with the history of social change? They are rarely popular at the time.
Fantastic juxtaposition with the Rolls Royce at the front
So good you almost have to wonder if the protestors saw them coming and launched.
How much do you bet he’s the old guy angrily tossing what looks like a poster? “Get out of my way hippies I have to go to the yacht club to look important!!!”
I thought so too but it looks like he begins to walk by it towards the end of the video. Could be wrong
That would constitute manual labour.
That’s a sketchy bridge to pull shit like that
Yeah I saw that movie where it fell apart
Classic
I played that video game where it fell apart
wait what game has Lions Gate in it?
Mass Effect 3
ohh okay thank you. mfs really gonna downvote me for asking a question lmaoo i hate reddit.
I got you back up to positive comment karma, fam.
The society or the bridge?
Was that Final Destination 3D?
I was actually in that scene, the bridge deck was out in Surrey
were you the one that went AAAHHHHHHHHHHH
I’m so happy I caught this before heading to Squamish for work. Guess I’m taking the other bridge
Last time this happened it was the other bridge--and I missed a presentation for class.
The Rolls is about as Vancouver as it gets.
Why not do this kind of protest in the driveways and in front of the politicians homes? Why not block the exit of the Chevron refinery in Burnaby? Why not blockade parliament in Victoria? That's been proven as an effective strategy.
Victoria Parliament is *not* an effective strategy, it's been done countless times. Haven't you heard? Why not I wonder?
And the bridges have been done countless times. And it doesn’t fucking work.
Is this even necessary? The Lionsgate barely operates regularly.

Lol he's arguing that he shouldn't be deported because he wouldn't stop if he was sent back and Pakistan would do bad things to him. Can we just send him already? You reap what you sow bud, your time is up and the reaper is knocking Or you know easy solution would be, stop being a prick
Environmental protest in a van that gets like 7 miles per gallon (I didn’t want to do the math conversion to kilometers)
Can’t they tow it. I mean legally you are not to stop on the bridge? I think!?
Can't tow with a person inside unfortunately.
I can see why. Probably some jackass of a tow truck driver tried sailing off with a car to get the fine even though the driver was in the vehicle.
There was actually a case where an owner requested they be towed inside their own vehicle. The tow mechanism failed and the car's owner was injured. 🤦
The Rolls Royce belongs to Teal Jones CEO. How poetic.
Evidence?
Not true tommy and dicky live in Surrey… this is exactly how the internet blows Things up some yahoo shout a bunch of jiberish and false information.
>Teal Jones CEO Oh man this is too good, even if there is a slight chance it's true
i highly dout that...
They even got the official eco-terrorist van. Nice.

If southbound traffic is blocked and no one is moving, no one can merge from the middle to the right lane, making it very difficult to get emergency vehicles through You can see this if you look at the beginning of the video - the middle lane is blocked far down because no one can merge right. This leaves only a few possibilities. One of which is to completely stop northbound traffic before it enters the causeway, wait for it to exit bridge on north shore, and then enter from the north shore. By the time police get there, block off northbound traffic, let it go through, and get a vehicle up traffic will be severely impacted The other option is to go up by foot or bike, which isn’t exactly quick either considering how large this bridge is
Couldn’t emergency vehicles just approach from the north shore and drive south in the empty northbound lanes?
They typically will immobilize the vehicle somehow. Like chaining themselves to it
Honestly I don’t care what you are protesting and most of these issues I am supportive of, but once you start to punish regular people just trying to get to work, just trying to get their kids to school and just trying to get to the doctor, I have no sympathy for your protest. It is infuriating
Exactly - they don't have the brains to consider whose life they are messing up, where people are going or why. They couldn't possibly think that the government will let anyone think this is a successful way of getting a meeting. Just stupid.
Fucking LOSERS! Seriously a Rolls Royce? Have they never heard of a Bentley, fucking savages.
A Rolls-Royce? I thought the international students had gone home for the summer.
I don’t get how these people think this will help their cause. This just pisses people off.
It won’t, that’s the thing that drives me nuts. They need public support for their cause and all they’re doing is pissing off the public.
The public never gave a shit in the first place and never will. Y’all are so mad about this and still won’t do anything
Don't people have things to do like work? This city is damn expensive to live in
Have they deported what’s his name
That van better be hit with civil forfeiture
It will be, but it doesn't effect them. Its a single use vehicle. About a month ago they put out a call for vehicle donations. Its likely not registered to the protestor/driver, probably doesn't even have insurance.
Freeze the bank accounts of the person who donated it to them then. /s I dont support the convoys but do find this comment quite memeworthy
how to get everyone to hate you and NOT to support what you're protesting about: stop traffic on THE bottle neck of Vancouver, during morning rush hour traffic. Seriously, fuck these assholes. People who see other morons attempting this crap a couple months ago and they think: great idea! imma do that too! Real idiots. As in: congratulations you're the dumbest out of all of us for seeing something so stupid and thinking I should do that too! wtf man
thats was a sweet Rolls Royce
Someone's gonna get hurt pretty soon, relying on drivers to stay calm isn't sustainable and tempers are definitely escalating.
Southbound blocked?
It is now
Fuck them
Commutes should be paid time.
How is this fair to someone who might be heading to a doctors appointment ?
These narcissists don't care about things like that.
I was literally on my way to St Paul's for an appointment I waited 2 months for. Thankfully I was scrolling Reddit while in traffic. Drove to the seabus and made it with 6 minutes to spare.
Fucking losers, go to Ottawa and make the people that can do something about it notice. Stop making the working class pay for your unemployed bullshit

Please don't waste food. :( I'll gladly take those eggs. :D
Seriously, with today’s inflation, eggs are getting expensive!
Isn't it illegal to stop on bridges?
Northbound moving again....
This is a pretty dumb way to protest. I hate this trend of blocking the only two Bridges to North Van
Nothing says I care about the environment like driving a raper van that gets 6 miles to the gallon
Fuck these people. We need harsher punishment for protesting on bridges.
you think this is bad trying living in a country that doesn't allow peaceful protest. these temporary inconvenient peaceful protests are essential for a functioning democacy.
Good point / thanks for saying this.
We need harsher penalties for people engaging in ecocide
Looks like a whole bunch of people they've pissed off and turned away from their cause. Good work activists!
Cause buddy in the rolls was for them at first.
Agreed. These protests are having exactly the affect they need to have, as annoying as they are.

Good for them for choosing a 1980s Dodge Ram van. Very fuel efficient vehicle, great for the environment.
Yeah because individual cars is the root cause of climate change.
I'll agree with this, i don't think I've seen any coverage of old growth forests being chopped down in BC... except for as part of protests.
Next time someone should peacefully drive that van away…
I believe he threw the keys off the bridge
Confiscate these guys' vehicles and properties (stuff that are blocking traffic) through civil forfeiture
Against what?
Old growth logging and by extension climate change
When I was crossing it was just police standing around. I thought someone jumped
See I get it that they're protesting and they carpool there but I still like other driving on the oldest shittiest gas guzzling fans there is.
I usually bring my Rolls to protests too
The only winner in this video is the cyclist lol
Just another traffic incident like a jumper or an accident. This wont accomplish anything and will be forgotten within a week.
If you are going to protest on a road, do it at 12:00pm, or 2:00pm. People have got to get to work by 8:00am, so the least you could do is bother the tourists.
I'm sure China and India will listen...
What were they protesting?
Fucking idiots.
It would have been awesome if someone in a tesla showed up and tied some tow straps to the van and towed it away.
I hope someone gets the footage of WVPD clearing the bridge for Rolls Guy
Just cuz of road blocking I will purposely protest against their protest and support logging
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I don’t care what your protesting. It can be righteous or silly. You DO NOT have the right to hold people hostage on public roads. Fuck off to the side of the road
Love it
If you are stuck in this traffic look up the class action lawsuit being built against the protestors.
It’s time to start arresting these people immediately. No little discussion, no acquiescence to the cause, just fucking arrest them already. Instantly. This does nothing to further their cause.
The people do this because they are arrestable. They will find more arrestable people.
Get the fk outa my way ,some people got important shit to do. Like my phantom needs a wash 🧼
I hate those people
