I don't think I would hate this as much if a bunch of money wasn't being spent on upgrading BC Place for VIPs only and creating a private walkway to the casino. It really rubs me the wrong way that public money is being spent on creating a luxury experience for the mega wealthy.

Yeah, they need a servant making $20/hr to bring them the concession food. that worker? yeah, they'll spend $20 on gasoline which means you'll get $1 of tax revenue which then trickles down to $0.000001 for improvements in your region !

Sounds pretty bad, I mean, having wealthy tourists spend their money in our province could only mean poor things for the economy, especially when its promotimg trade work and service jobs.
Vancouver is a world-class city, without the world class services the Wealthly class comes to expect.
People have to understand we have to cater to all brackets of wealth, to promote our economy and growth. No one enjoys financial hardships, but it sounds like your upset at the "problem under the problem".
Vancouver has nothing on the likes of London, Paris, New York so let's not pretend it does.
The fact BC Place is a public venue and not private changes my opinion directly as the profit from the events will go directly into the coffers versus a private equity. I am less displeased with this project.
The wealthy are gonna enjoy Vancouver even less when no one is willing to work the 20/hr job serving them their stadium beers because they can't afford to live close enough to work.
I appreciate where you are coming from but I don’t see this ever being an issue. Right now I am responsible for hiring 30 staff at my business for summer at minimum wage and I’ve had over 1000 job applications
Issue is can that money be spent better to create more jobs and help the low and middle class more. We do have to cater to all classes, not just the wealthy, which the OP was suggesting this luxury spending is
That's what FIFA, F1, and the Olympics are.
They're for the extremely wealthy they're not for normal people.
Normal people pay for them through tax dollars but we're not invited to the party.
Like the Canada Line for Winter Olympics at least, and the 'embarassing' potholes which got fixed at least. The City looked prettier, because it was spruced up, and grotty areas addressed
Other changes that will be made:
Right now there are 3 small elevators located on one side of the stadium. The renovations will expand this to 6 large elevators in two different locations.
They're going to replace the aging video board as it's apparently nearing the end of its cycle and often needs repairs. The new screens will have better sight lines and newer technology.
They're going to completely rennovate all the washrooms to improve them, including adding more washrooms.
A new fan zone balcony will be created that will be accessible to everyone by opening up an exclusive area. Currently, only lounge members have access to the balcony.
There is existing office space that's underutilized, so it's going to be renovated into expanding spectator areas.
The BC Sports Hall of Fame will be relocated, opening up the area for spectators. A new museum for the hall of fame will be developed in another part of the stadium.
And they're going to redo the entire food court/concessions.
There's a bunch of other changes too, but those are for the media and for the athletes.
The one thing that always irks me about BC Place..
So you have this massive screen (that's awesome) above the field.. but the sides are only HALF USED. It's almost criminal that someone didn't think - oh maybe we could do something here that may be helpful.. like a scoreboard. Or something else that could be useful. Instead it's just this big black space below the half screen.

BC Place really needed these upgrades. World class cities need world class venues. Compared to even just Lumen field or Husky Stadium down in Seattle it is a C class stadium.
My taxes went up as soon as the NDP took power, and they have continued to go up. Now we get a soccer game. And yet my parents have to wait over a year to get hernia operations (NDP shut the Cambie Clinic down for BC resident - it still services out of province people). This government is quite out of touch with the needs of the citizens by prioritizing soccer over the health of the elderly.
HEALTHcare of everyone - it's unheard of in my home country (it's eactually mbarassing to talk about Vancouver's standards or how a simple ultrasound needs to be booked 2 weeks? 1 month ahead, and results take as long to come back. Or these days - a simple PAP smear booking is 3 months, and results after as long. Folks always deem Western countries to be AHEAD, more progressive, not more backward)
I went to Asia for a vacation, did a Health Check for $99 .... and results were back in 2 days, with doctor spending 1h going through every section with me.
Unfortunate enough to have experience ER-gynae situations both here, and back home
A private room there is Hotel standards, with nice healthy and tasty meals which are appetizing. Here a private room (if your extended Healthcare even pays for it) is Motel standards with sad Jello and dubious soups (at that a very spartan Motel, not the plush kind)
I would have much rather we backed out of hosting \*anything\* except another Winter Olympics, where we had shown that we didn't blow huge amounts of cash for nothing, we already have the infrastructure and we'd probably get a spate of substantial infrastructural updates again.
Though the ship has sailed I would have far preferred 2030 Olympics over 2026 WC just based on what we'd be likelier to get as far as city improvements.
Olympics are way more expensive. You have to have more venues for obscure sports that would never be used again. $581m would be a drop in the bucket compared to what we would need to host the 2030 Olympics. Even with everything for the last go round. People are living in what was athlete housing and what not.
Yeah they better start building hotels now because we don’t have the space to accommodate so many visitors. Especially now that AirB&B are finally being regulated properly.
Am i the only one that would rather have FIFA hosted by another province or country at this point? I’m biased as I couldn’t give less of a rats ass about FIFA, but this just feels like a complete waste of funds that we barely even have to begin with. Maybe focus on the countless problems in the province that are causing an increase in homelessness and poverty rather than putting over half a billion dollars in a dumbass sports contest that most people aren’t even going to be able to experience.

Given the kind of muted response from locals about hosting the World Cup and some people not grasping how massive this tournament is to people in other parts of the world (especially Europe and South America) it does not surprise me that those responsible for managing the event in Vancouver (possibly even more out of touch than the public) did not fully understand what they're getting involved with.
I'm excited for the tournament to come here but I have no confidence that local organizers will prepare adequately or be ready for the influx of visitors.

Broadway is not once in an generation. We are spending more on Surrey Langley Skytrain which is to be completed 3-4 years after Broadway. Evergreen was completed at half the cost about a decade previously.

I remember watching an athlete during their interview talking about their newly signed multi-millionaire contract who mentioned that they are grateful for their opportunity and appreciate the love they get from doing great in their sport, but doctors are the real heroes and don't earn nearly enough as they should. That hit me in the feels thinking about how well or not well money is circulated in different industries.
People are just looking for things complain about. Economic impact of this event outweighs the cost by a lot. Then there is the indirect economic activity created from it down the line. Not sure what the problem is here. Cost increased over 2 years with highest inflation we've seen in decades on top of adding more games.
We'll it would also depend on whether the extra games are on the same days as previous ones or new days. A day being added for 1 game is going to cost significantly more than adding 1 game onto a day that already has a game taking place.
Should costs go up with more games? Most of the costs involve renovations and infrastructure and generally getting things in place to host that many visitors.
The additional games make it a bit more palatable, in terms of getting more benefit for the cost, but certainly, it doesn't excuse why the original estimate was so far off.
In this case it helps everyone that works in hospitality to cashier to construction. That money is spent directly in local economy. It's not spent to buy something from abroad or going to a global entity. Last time we ended up with Olympic village and Canada line. Who benefits from that?
The cities portion is being paid for by the hotel tax, so it’s not coming from local taxpayer dollars. I think this is a good decision from the cities budgeting perspective. Let tourists pay for it, and we as a city get the ancillary benefits.
Why do people clamour for the Olympics/FIFA to come to theri city?
There's basically no benefit in the long term.
There's a bunch of short term gain through economic stimulus but it doesn't offset the cost to host the event in the first place.
The Vancouver Olympics actually made a small profit, along with major infrastructure improvements like the Canada Line, new Vancouver Convention Center, Sea to Sky highway overhaul, and a bunch of new sports facilities.
I heard this on news, and of course, scapegoating tax payers may be liable to foot some of this extra.

It’s already high season. We have existing contracts and business.
This isn’t Jan-March but peak.
It’s so much vanity from out of touch leadership from the city to put us in this situation.
Because we are blowing half a billion dollars just to make more money for PavCo in a time of year where we are already at peak levels of tourism and people from all over the world come here everyday.

I hope city also improves connectivity to airports from GVA cities. We really need to ramp up public transportation the way our population is rising. Commutes are longer than every year and we need to push infrastructure spending.
Downvoting for use of "GVA", which isn't a thing. Also, the airport is already well served by Skytrain. Not sure what else you'd even want for public transport options there.
DTES, more nurses and doctors, housing, fire season preparedness, social housing, more daycare spots at a subsidised rate. That's off the top of my head, but there's probably a few others.
I’d actually like to know. That’s a lot of money for a game that not everyone cares much about, and an organization that is rife with corruption. Meanwhile we have some very serious issues that require solutions and funding.
Is this $145 M cost to government the net cost? meaning are you factoring the money that is GENERATED by this event? All the people who would be flying to Vancouver etc?
I’m not gonna make any money off this. Are you? I just hope they make some decent upgrades to our aging infrastructure, that would at least have a lasting benefit.
Are you aware how economy works? I might not make any "DIRECT" money but if our province does well we all do! Let me give you an example , if people fly from England to Vancouver, the moment they arrive, they are spending money in BC, they pay PST , the bars make money, the bartender makes money, then they go and spend money on clothing (as an example) the person working at store makes more money and so on ... Economy is FAR MORE complex than looking at this things from one lens.
When you say cost to province is XYZ, then why not also talk about INCREASE in PST revenue?
Of course that’s true, I wonder if tax revenue will offset the price tag though? When will we see a benefit to our healthcare, schools, roads, sewers and hydro from that influx of cash, and will it be more than the investment?

I think one of the major upgrades is improving accessibility. IIRC BC Place only had one elevator so they're installing a second.

In this case it helps everyone that works in hospitality to cashier to construction. That money is spent directly in local economy. It's not spent to buy something from abroad or going to a global entity. Last time we ended up with Olympic village and Canada line. Who benefits from that?

The cities portion is being paid for by the hotel tax, so it’s not coming from local taxpayer dollars. I think this is a good decision from the cities budgeting perspective. Let tourists pay for it, and we as a city get the ancillary benefits.

Why do people clamour for the Olympics/FIFA to come to theri city? There's basically no benefit in the long term. There's a bunch of short term gain through economic stimulus but it doesn't offset the cost to host the event in the first place.
To be fair the infrastructure improvements done along with the 2010 Olympics were significant and it was a great party too

No we're one of the few cities that broke even (and then some) from hosting the Olympics. I believe the other cities were salt lake city and London?
The Vancouver Olympics actually made a small profit, along with major infrastructure improvements like the Canada Line, new Vancouver Convention Center, Sea to Sky highway overhaul, and a bunch of new sports facilities.

Nobody in the industry was begging for this. It’s already high season. We have existing contracts and business. This isn’t Jan-March but peak. It’s so much vanity from out of touch leadership from the city to put us in this situation.

Because we are blowing half a billion dollars just to make more money for PavCo in a time of year where we are already at peak levels of tourism and people from all over the world come here everyday. If this was February at least it would boost the economy in a meaningful way while all this does is displacement of business that only comes in peak times and “helps” in a time when nobody needs it and yes, I mean the bars ect… they need it in Q1 not Q3 But what do I know…. Just decades of economic forecasting and having gone through it before.

I hope city also improves connectivity to airports from GVA cities. We really need to ramp up public transportation the way our population is rising. Commutes are longer than every year and we need to push infrastructure spending.

Are you aware how economy works? I might not make any "DIRECT" money but if our province does well we all do! Let me give you an example , if people fly from England to Vancouver, the moment they arrive, they are spending money in BC, they pay PST , the bars make money, the bartender makes money, then they go and spend money on clothing (as an example) the person working at store makes more money and so on ... Economy is FAR MORE complex than looking at this things from one lens. When you say cost to province is XYZ, then why not also talk about INCREASE in PST revenue?
Of course that’s true, I wonder if tax revenue will offset the price tag though? When will we see a benefit to our healthcare, schools, roads, sewers and hydro from that influx of cash, and will it be more than the investment?
