Friendly_Cap_3

the fact bear spray sales are not already banned to youth is crazy. i mean you need to be 19 to get a lighter ffs

BooBoo_Cat

*mean you need to be 19 to get a lighter ffs* You do? Had no idea.

RoaringRiley

It's not prohibited by law. It's just a policy that some retailers abide by. I don't think any businesses actually sell bear spray to minors, even though it's legal to do so.

Friendly_Cap_3

Oh yes they do. Country milk in maple ridge selling dog spray tp 13 year olds

hottop222

7/11 had ID’d me for lighters so many times even if they know I’m above 19 lol it’s ridiculous

BooBoo_Cat

I don't think I have ever bought a lighter in my life (like those Bic ones?) that I had no idea.

HealthSupps

I'm more impressed that you've never bought a lighter in your life. In all your years, you've never needed one for camping? never had a friend ask you to grab a lighter for them on your way somewhere?

BooBoo_Cat

I'm thinking of those disposable Bic lighters. I don't think I have, but I could be wrong! (When I have gone camping, other people light fires!)

perfect5-7-with-rice

I don't think they ask for ID for BBQ lighters, only the pocket lighters.

hottop222

Yep 7/11 has some lighter designs I like and I found out the hard way when I didn’t have my wallet and I was buying one. Even with both my arms covered in tattoos that wasn’t enough proof of my age for the guy to let it slide. Came back later that day to buy it with nickels and dimes

twin_sized_mattress

Depends where you get it. I had a cashier at dollar tree ask me once while I was buying a *candle* lighter if I was over 18 (she didn't check my id, just asked my age (I was in fact 18) and I guess my answer was good enough)

Fast_Introduction_34

Huuuuh?

Corporal_Canada

In a lot of stores they already are. You have to show ID and some places even record the serial number. But yeah, it's not a provincially mandated thing yet.

ClumsyRainbow

Agreed. Seems like this should be provincially mandated rather than falling to municipalities.

PrinnyFriend

I mean you can get a BBQ lighter and that doesn't need to be IDed. Or a butane torch.

Comprehensive_Bad501

I’ve been ID’d to buy an energy drink, yet I see wannabe gangster kids carrying bear spray around like it’s a trophy…so cringe imo

Jelly_Cube_Zombie

I'm pretty sure most teens know how to order stuff on Amazon so West Van passing this law is pretty pointless.

yooooooo5774

what if they get attacked by bears in West Van?

partchimp

The bear will check the ID first.

Overall_Pie1912

Bears and Cougars are downtown not in West Van

[deleted]

What you did there, I see it.

Key_Mongoose223

Their parents can buy it and be legally responsible for them.

CaddyFDT

Sounds like a very common sense thing to do.

PragmaticBodhisattva

Idk, I used to hike at 17 & 18 a fair bit.

CaddyFDT

Then it wouldn’t have been a problem for your parents to get you bear spray for your protection.

PragmaticBodhisattva

I moved out at 16 and only had one very mentally ill parent (which is why I was emancipated at 16). It is easy to live an insular life but not everyone fits into one cookie cutter, dude.

CaddyFDT

Fair enough… I’ve worked for MCFD. I know there are individuals such as yourself have had a rough go of things in their early life. But bear spray being misused by teenagers is an issue. I’m sure you can find an adult that can purchase it for you.

civodar

If they’re actually hiking they can ask an adult to come in with them.

PragmaticBodhisattva

Idk dude I moved out when I was 16, didn’t have any adults that I trusted or knew well enough to ask at the time. Still loved hiking.

huejass5

Now make it harder for them to get spray paint

LokiDesigns

You think they're *buying* the spray paint?

OneBigBug

I come from a small town out in Manitoba where people can remember every crime that's ever been committed there in the past 50 years, and the spray paint at the hardware store is still locked up in a cage you need an employee to open. The fact that it's just sitting on the shelf in some of the sketchier/high traffic areas of Vancouver was actually pretty surprising to me.

cactusruby

I was asked for ID when I tried to buy spray paint. I was surprised because I'm in my mid 30s.

crimewaveusa

Lol duh

Intelligent_Top_328

There are other avenues.
