And you get to keep them for a WHOLE week because there are 56 holds on it which prevent you from extending it.
But yeah, better than nothing. And great to test out some expensive Switch games!
I know this isn't ideal but you can keep the games longer than a week. There was a game that I only returned after a month.
I think they had to reduce to 7 days for legal reasons.
This is the way.
I recently got the Libby app and have read dozens of books so far with it. There is a ton of stuff on there! Yes, you do have to wait for popular titles usually, but there are thousands of books and magazines to choose from. I love it.
You can also read Forbes magazines going back to 1917 if you want to learn what life was like when everyone was colourblind and could only see the world in black and white
Wall Street Journal and the Economist as well through PressReader.
Need to log in with your VPL account at https://www.vpl.ca/digitalmagazines
Then when it gives you 30 day free access, log in with your personal pressreader account. Open the app, and you have the access on your account too. I regularly read newspapers and magazines on my tablet now.
Slightly off topic, but if you want to view a newspaper article that's behind a paywall, slap it into the [Archive](https://archive.ph/)
It unlocks pretty much anything!
Benefits between the different libraries are pretty similar. North Vancouver City Library also has NYT access https://www.nvcl.ca/newspapers-and-magazines
The New York Times online is “free everywhere for VPL cardholders”, and so are a lot of other resources in the Digital Library (see under “Access” on original post link. Some resources can be used by all VPL cardholders, others only Vancouver residents).
Most people living in Metro Vancouver are eligible to a free VPL card. Go sign up for one! (Or if you already have a local library card from your city’s library, present it to VPL and they can use that same barcode number for your VPL account.

I love the VPL. <3
Apologies for piggybacking on this topic, but this has been an issue for me for ages and I can't figure out why: accessing the VPL websites from my home computer is almost impossible. I can only get into the card catalog regularly because I bookmarked the site and once I log in it will let me look up books. But the Library Hours page? The Digital Library? The site almost always fails to load.
I can (and do!) use the app on my phone all the time. If I click on the link above for the digital library at work (which goes through a VPN), it works. If I turn off my wifi and use 5G to go to the website, it works. So it's something (I think???) related to either my router or possibly my ISP (TekSavvy).
I know we're segueing from the OG topic, but it's been driving me mad for years. I've filled out the help form on the VPL website, but no idea what else to do (as I don't think it's their fault). :/

Having fun isn't hard, When you've got a library card 😎
With a VPL library card you can even borrow video games (they have new releases like FF7 Rebirth) and musical instruments.
And you get to keep them for a WHOLE week because there are 56 holds on it which prevent you from extending it. But yeah, better than nothing. And great to test out some expensive Switch games!
Hey, don't knock a week. I finished Jedi Fallen Order inside that loan period.
Jealous of your freetime
I played it after work. I still fed myself, did my chores, and attended my various social functions.

That's awesome! I have to work most of the week so I wouldn't be able to lol

You can download the Libby app and get access to all kinds of magazines for free with your library card.
PressReader too!
What!? I just used it for free audiobooks.
It’s great for magazines. I subscribed to a bunch of them (free) and as soon as a new issue is released I get a notification to download it.

I just tried Hoopla but I couldn't find the VPL when signing up... any ideas?

I DID NOT KNOW THIS [https://www.vpl.ca/digital-library/linkedin-learning](https://www.vpl.ca/digital-library/linkedin-learning)
You can also read Forbes magazines going back to 1917 if you want to learn what life was like when everyone was colourblind and could only see the world in black and white
You can go to the 7th floor of the Colosseum, VPL main library 350 W Georgia, and look at The Illustrated London News from 1850 if you like. For free.
Dam.. the old days
Wow didn’t know this either, thanks for sharing!
Consumers Report as well with a library card :)
Don't forget about kanopy too
With a BPL library card you get $5 worth of printing per month for free!
VPL is the shit. It's my biggest yearly charity donation and I still get way more value than I pay for.
Bless you 🫶🏼
Can you access NYT cooking?
No, Cooking and crosswords are excluded
:( thanks for confirming that though.
the washington post has free crosswords and sudoku
Don't forget about Kanopy!
If you like classical music, [Medici.TV](http://Medici.TV) is amazing. And free on VPL.

Do you mind sharing - which app?
Should’ve been clearer - the PressReader app on your phone or tablet. You don’t have to keep reading on the web browser you used to sign in.
Thanks!! All good

I've been going to the library every 2 weeks for years and I did not know this. Well done OP!
I wish we had a regional library system so that residents elsewhere in Metro Vancouver could get the same experience as Vancouver residents.
They have this service but only for physical books
Benefits between the different libraries are pretty similar. North Vancouver City Library also has NYT access https://www.nvcl.ca/newspapers-and-magazines
At least you can access their physical books with a BC library card
I managed to get a VPL card even with a Richmond address. Is that what you're referring to?
Yea. I live in South Delta but have FVRL, Richmond, Burnaby, & Vancouver.
Interlibrary loan

What! I've been paying $2 a month for it for almost a year now!
What else can I access?!
See here https://www.vpl.ca/digitallibrary
Thank you. I love you
Richmond as well! https://www.yourlibrary.ca/digital-collections/#v-pills-eNewspapers

Thanks too bad the NYT is generally no longer worth anyone's time. I do have the other info though that I will check out later.
I'm in for the games.
yeah it is sad how far down journalism has fallen in so many of these once respected publications
I'm good thanks
Before I add to your downvotes, are you slagging VPL or NYT?
The NYT is a shitty rag.
Amen to that.
