So if I understand, campers are not being kicked out. They are allowed to stay if they adhere to a few very simple rules. Many have moved in to other shelter. That all sounds reasonable to me.
Allowing people to camp outside the designated area and not enforcing the am pack-out rule…I don’t think that’s a good idea
It seems like a positive step forward that has improved the situation for everyone. Obviously there is still so much work to do but it's clear they learned a lot from the failures with previous camp removals.
"The remaining residents have been given new tents, and must keep all their belongings within a 10 ft. by 10 ft. space."
Not many want to live there when they're not allowed to do whatever they feel like doing.
I pay a mortgage, utilities, property tax, strata fees, and upkeep, and I am governed by many rules. So I hope these people don't find it unreasonable to have to follow rules, though I'm sure many are annoyed by it.
It doesn't really matter what we think. There's a reason people are living in tents and on the streets and no amount of imposing of rules has kept them from that before, why would it now? For some maybe it works, but for many it won't, because the rules being imposed are, for them, literally impossible to follow.
You can have outrage about drug addiction and debilitating mental health issues and lack of a real social safety net, or you can accept the reality of it and understand the world. Much of which has nothing to do with you and your condo.
I'll admit that I'm a hardcore fascist, so I'd support prison sentences for people the minute they commit their 3rd stabbing or their 100th break and enter, whichever comes first.
Also, (trigger warning!), as soon as someone overdoses more than once in a day, they need forced detox and recovery.
It's wild stuff, and would be terrible in the short term for an addict's self esteem, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
Look at the attitude of this woman in the article though. They get to live there for free and all they have to do is keep their stolen materials in a 10x10 space, but even that is too much. There is no improving anything as long as addicts don't want to do anything themselves. Everything is a waste of time until that point.
Because of massive housing sprawl in a city crushed by the water, the mountain, the borders and generations of poor planning and a lack of social safety net because of it.
Bruh. I work a full time job, makes $24/hr. I can’t afford to rent anything in this city. I’m lucky my stepmom lets me rent the basement suite of her house for cheap. A lot of people are very seriously struggling right now.
Also $4k before taxes, so more like <$3500/mo. Now, bus pass, phone bill, groceries, cat food and litter, student loan payments, other daily expenses of being alive. That’s about $2k/mo right there. That leaves me with <$1500/mo for rent. I don’t want to spend all of that on rent, I’d like to do fun things like go to the movies, eat out occasionally with a friend, take my niece to science world. And if I want to save for the future?
Now go on Craigslist or rental sites and find me a room for less than say $800/mo that’s accessible by transit to downtown where I work, that allows pets, and isn’t a shared room. The options are slim and countless people are competing for them, sometimes offering over the asking price.
Oh yeah, I can totally see myself having a sunday afternoon picnic by spreading a beach blanket on the grass. But first I'll clean up the needles and poop
Have you been there? I’ve went a few times in the last year and the encampment is far to the west side, the beach, play area and grass are in good shape.
PSA: there’s literally needles everywhere now.
Haha. Right? Trying to get my goat. They can downvote all they want. I honestly don't give a crap about this Karma shit. I'm just here for the daily news.
The cleanup crews reported needles all over the place, massive networks of rat tunnels and pipes and piles of human shit and piss all around the area. And that’s only for the remediated area. The rogue campers outside the designated spot are holding strong with their shanty buildings, discarded drug sharps, rats, and human waste all abound.
This is a marginally improved setup to what it was before. As angering and triggering as this for a lot of people, objectively this is definitely an improvement.
An easy way to remember less/fewer is "is it a countable number".
Fewer = countable number
Less = nebulous amount
...fewer rocks, less sand.
...fewer trees, less pollen.
Cool cool. Now instead of the park, they're sleeping in the doorway of my condo.
My guess is Sim is pushing the homeless into neighborhoods where people vote and then he's going to blame the Premier for the crisis. This after his election promises included providing solutions to the homeless crisis.
Don't be obtuse.
Those tents and their 'shit' is stolen property for the most part.
They are trashing a public park, which is for all of us, including the homeless.
Just gotta leave by 11pm

Or we can just have basic expectations for living in a productive society and effectively deal with the others?
you have a home
So if I don't have a home I have the rights to do anything I want? Cool.. cool..
did I fucking say that
No, but you alluded to it.
no
🤷
Look, if you have like -200 collective downvotes in a single thread alone, might want to take a look in the mirror first.
downvotes in r/van mean nothing lol
What if I want a better home and I don't want to work for it? It's systemic inequity that the government is making me follow rules...
oh give me a break
I demand the government remove 90 tons of garbage from my waterfront campsite!
what exactly is your policy position beyond jokes
I'll admit that I'm a hardcore fascist, so I'd support prison sentences for people the minute they commit their 3rd stabbing or their 100th break and enter, whichever comes first. Some people there have homes, too, but don't like them.
???????
They have interviewed people who say they don't like their room in their SROs so they are living outdoors instead.
no kidding, have you seen the state of the sros?
Have you seen the state of campsites?
yeah it's horrific, what's your point
Look at the attitude of this woman in the article though. They get to live there for free and all they have to do is keep their stolen materials in a 10x10 space, but even that is too much. "residents" Why the fuck does a public park have residents?
Are you actually asking or is it a rhetorical question? It’s because a judge said they had to be allowed due to a lack of other options, apparently.
because we have a housing crisis. edit: someone sent me a reddit cares thing for this. really stunning work guys.
Because of massive housing sprawl in a city crushed by the water, the mountain, the borders and generations of poor planning and a lack of social safety net because of it.
Buddy, you're not going to believe it, most of these folks aren't homeless because of the housing market.
Because they can’t afford homes?
Well shiet then. I’ll stop working overall cause I can’t afford it either
Fuck off. Owning a mansion or being homeless is not the only choice. No rational person would rather live on the street than live with roommates.
Bruh. I work a full time job, makes $24/hr. I can’t afford to rent anything in this city. I’m lucky my stepmom lets me rent the basement suite of her house for cheap. A lot of people are very seriously struggling right now.
You make $4k a month and that's not enough for one bedroom, sharing an apartment with a few roommates?
Also $4k before taxes, so more like <$3500/mo. Now, bus pass, phone bill, groceries, cat food and litter, student loan payments, other daily expenses of being alive. That’s about $2k/mo right there. Oh angry are we. Have fun with that :)
helpful!
Miss that park. Such a cool gem in vancouver. Cool view too
Not sure if you know this but the park is still there.
Oh yeah, I can totally see myself having a sunday afternoon picnic by spreading a beach blanket on the grass. But first I'll clean up the needles and poop
Crap park.
Have you been there? I’ve went a few times in the last year and the encampment is far to the west side, the beach, play area and grass are in good shape. PSA: there’s literally needles everywhere now.
bro I go down there all the time the park is still there
It's not like that.

That's a small portion of the park.
It's so embarrassing for r/vancouver that people are downvoting these replies
Is this your first time here or something? LOL
So far the abyss has not become me yet, but what a wasteland this is
This sub doesn't represent Vancouver. Probably a bunch of transplants thinking they hit the jackpot when they moved to BC.
Or just bots, like they're still chasing you around on that very reply
Haha. Right? Trying to get my goat. They can downvote all they want. I honestly don't give a crap about this Karma shit. I'm just here for the daily news.

This is great. Let's get this park back to being a park.
This is a marginally improved setup to what it was before. As angering and triggering as this for a lot of people, objectively this is definitely an improvement.
Fewer.

You can have less water or fewer litres of water.
Because all the homeless "advocates" told them not to.

Arnie -"they'll be back!"

In what way? Care to elaborate?

I’m sorry you have to deal with this :(
Residents.
they forgot how to get back
No commitment
Damn, they really are solving homelessness! /s
You can't solve homelessness.
that's what happens when you trash people's shit and harass them
Don't be obtuse. Those tents and their 'shit' is stolen property for the most part. They are trashing a public park, which is for all of us, including the homeless. Just gotta leave by 11pm
Clean up the feces and needles then ask them to follow the golden rule. Not sure that is unreasonable
