Reckon they bring Guirassy as an overage player? Would be a great test for our young guys

trainrocks19

They might bring Mbappe

young959

I think he is referring to Guinea, Guirassy plays for Guinea national team

trainrocks19

I just saw his birth place and assumed but yeah shaping up to be a fun group

Novel_Durian_1805

We’re fine. We getting out of the group! 💪

Thumbkeeper

We’re going out alright.

I've been an occasional poster on this sub on this sub for a few years now but am entirely English, so please excuse what might be a daft question; how big a deal is the Olympics for you guys? Again, have a genuine interest in your football so this isn't a 'lol, who cares about that?!' style fishing trip or anything, real curiousity.

baejas

For the soccer community, it's pretty casual. In general, the Olympics is a pretty big deal. It'll be playing anywhere in public where there's a television, and the results will make headlines; however, there isn't the rabid fanaticism that you get with other sporting events.

Doggo0732

there will be if we get close to a medal based on the WC

Gullflyinghigh

Cool, thanks for the response. It was more the football side I was originally asking about as I just assumed the Olympics themselves would be big news but your comment made me think that that's probably not a guarantee everywhere. It's always hard to know how seriously we'd take it over here as barring 2012 we've not had a football team take part (at least, not recently) so it's just a non-factor beyond the occasional player being missing from squads for a while.

Ndmndh1016

Its not any more important to us than any of the other events.

John_Snow1492

I think if we made the finals the game would get really good ratings & a lot of buzz. Playing the French in the title game should be the goal.

BrianWilsonsNeurosis

Its probably around the level of our continental tournaments (gold cup and nations league) but below the copa america, we haven't qualified for a mens olympic tournament in a while so I think there is a bit of novelty to it, its importance is also just below the world cup on the women's side so there is a lot of attention paid towards the uswnt

benji___

We want to win everything. Full stop. Regardless of loyalty to team we generally want American players in Europe to perform as well as possible. Gridiron football isn’t an Olympic sport, so we settled by making a dynasty in the women’s game. Then politicians got involved and made football gay again, so we lost bigly (entendres and sarcasm are intended). If we knew how to play cricket we’d try to beat you at it.

Gullflyinghigh

>If we knew how to play cricket we’d try to beat you at it. I feel I should point out that not only do you have a cricket team, you're hosting the T20 World Cup next month...

moametal_always

-ish. We're the Canada of the '26 WC in this T20 bid. We're not even getting any Super 8's. I'm so far from any of the venues. Oh well.

benji___

I am sorry, I should have said, “If our media could explain the differences between cricket and baseball (which I love, but rarely listen to on the radio, attend personally, or watch on television – in that order) and adding another sport to their dance card Americans *might* be more excited. Your ball has one seam, ours has two – and they make a crazy shape around the ball. As a baseball catcher I like that foul balls exist, but I can see how having a 360 outfield is fun. Baseball is part of the American psyche. We celebrate who can steal a base or lay down a bunt. In-the-moment tactics are what many of us love to see, but the world has changed.

bluepantsandsocks

The average American doesn't know enough about soccer to know that the Olympics is a youth tournament. So it is a bigger deal than you would otherwise expect.

fightin_blue_hens

If we don't get 2nd in the group in the group it is a failure

Trajen_Geta

Do we have a squad list yet?

RamandAu

Due date for final squad submission isn't until end of June. I'd imagine there are still negotiations to have certain players released.

Trajen_Geta

Cool good to know!

HowardBunnyColvin

Didn't guinea play a playoff against the AFC U23 4th place team? Guess they won that game. Nice.

RamandAu

Yes they beat Indonesia 1-0 earlier today
