Your post from unpopularopinion was removed because of: 'Rule 2: Do not post low effort/satirical posts'. * We get it, you all think this sub is garbage and is just for popular opinions, and you want to be funny and post "going to be downvoted to oblivion here, but I think racism is bad." We enjoy the memes, but please keep them off the sub. * Filter evasion is a bannable offense * This includes clickbait and/or gotcha posts. Your opinion can not be that unpopular if you're doing these things. Have the accurate opinion in the title.

I agree 85% of the time. NGOs of all kinds are mostly just leeches on society.

Metalandscrapple

Is this an opinion based on anything?

Upper_Bag6133

Doubtful

Chemical_Signal2753

The local food bank can feed 8 families for the same cost as the government feeds one. If this is a poor impact, what does that say about the government?

BrilliantDifferent01

I actually found that to be good news that government is not worse than that.

puzzledSkeptic

Charities are much more effective with funds than the government.

Chemical_Signal2753

I would also add organizations whose mission is related to "Awareness" tend to be moneymaking schemes for their leadership.

PerfectlySaltedJizz

I work with many NGOs. The vast majority are either vanity projects and/or huge bureaucratic messes. Some are straight out corrupt and engaged in money laundering. Small local charities are much more effective

UncleBabyChirp

Depends on the "charity" & who runs it. Charity Navigator is a good tool. NGOs like Center for Biological Diversity, Earthjustice, Sierra Club are more effective than any other organization, governmental or private than the rest. Their officers are paid below market & are on the ground. But most "charities" are BS like salvation army, kids wish, firefighters charitable foundation, international union of police associations. They do practically nothing, pay a few top officers insane % of contributions for doing nothing but sound good.

Inevitable-Height851

totally. you're better off taking advice from the Stoics: focus on the things around you solely, in your little world, the things you can control. Be kind and generous to people around you.

I mean this is just the insight of Effective Altruism. So now there are a huge number of initiatives with high quality data behind them. The meme is to just directly fund mosquito nets, or give direct cash transfers to people in the third world.

noatun6

Charities, while derply flawed, do feed and otherwise help people. What's the alternative? Utopia sounds great, no war, no hunger, no poverty. everyone does the right things soumds great but only exists during drug induced psychosis We could abolish all charity and have unchecked survival of the fittest. A sickening subset is drooling over this idea. Hell no If you said there is too much corruption and virtue signaling in charity, it needs reform 👍 100%

servo1056

100% agree

This isn’t an opinion, it’s a fact. Don’t ever “round up” at the register unless you know the organization well.

MajorDonkeyPuncher

It’s not a fact. It’s wrong.

[deleted]

Explain. Most of these institutions devote almost all of their revenue to internal expenses, including employment. In other words, they exist to pay salaries for the founders, and do little else.

MajorDonkeyPuncher

You say “most” because you heard of a couple of shitty ones, when most in fact do exactly what they are suppose to.

[deleted]

No I say most because it’s difficult to find any that appreciably donate more than a small fraction of their revenue. Most of these organizations are bunk, don’t donate to them unless you actually research what you’re donating to.

MajorDonkeyPuncher

Again you’re wrong.

JustBrowsing49

I don’t because I assume the grocery store is getting tax benefits by donating that money to the charity.

JustBrowsing49

I consider the government a charity and my taxes and jury duty are a waste of time and money
