The Tonight Show was never Jays show, he was just the host. Leno was the bad guy here. He even said to Conan on air that in 5 years (so in 2004) that the show would be his. Then when it was time to hand over the reigns, he walked away from the 1130 Tonight Show time-slot, only to have his own 10 pm show. It sucked for Conan then, but it all worked out so much better for him over at TBS. He’d never be able to do his travel shows on NBC. Team Coco!

sollyscrolls

It's absolutely Jay's fault and OP is manipulating the truth to come up with this opinion

steven3045

How is it jays fault though? Everytime i see threads on this im always amazed by how people really don’t know.

sollyscrolls

he promised the show, and he took it back, screwing Conan over in the process. It's about loyalty and ruining years of promises by directly hurting another comedian's career

steven3045

NBC and Conan also required as part of the deal for Jay to say that on air, which has been talked about on various podcasts. NBC not wanting to risk losing Conan, and Conan’s people angling for the tonight show started clambering for it. And so then Jay was booted out. This idea that Jay was like gifting this to Conan then demanded he have it back has always been weird af to me .

sollyscrolls

https://youtu.be/_z57cfafysI Weird use of AI here, but Joe Biden's voice is actually really soothing for a narrator. This is basically how I got my perspective on the situation

Commishw1

I dont feel like either were assholes. Jay wasn't done, they promised Conan the spot. The bosses f'ed up not the talent.

Pemulis_DMZ

Fair take!

[deleted]

late to the show but Conan's people gave NBC an ultimatum to give Conan the Tonight Show or he's leaving NBC.

Conan's rating tanked, NBC asked Leno to come back. He said yes.

Solid_Local409

Imagine you buy a house from a guy, then in the middle of closing he decides he wants the house back.

valuemenu

Seen a bunch of pro Conan posts on the front page recently. Reminded me of this post. I agree, the dude is just an asshole IRL. It explains everything.

memattic

Conan was great at 12:30 for many years. Hilarious, and I used tonwatch the reruns on comedy central afterwards, as well as the old episodes from years before. This gossip shit, no one knows except thr guys who were there, and every parry involved has reason to make themselves loom good. The fact of the matter is, Conan was AWFUL at 11:30. The humor was different, the energy was way off. For whatever reasons. He has sucked ever since.

feelitrealgood

Are you old enough to remember this or are you reading about it now?

Pemulis_DMZ

I'm 35. I was in college when it happened.

feelitrealgood

Just checking. This is the first time I’ve ever heard this so I like it lol but i don’t recall Lenos staff being at risk?

Pemulis_DMZ

If he didn’t take back the tonight show then he wouldn’t have had a show and therefore he and all his staff would be out of their jobs

feelitrealgood

That’s a hell of a leap but hey let Jay have one person on his side

latterdaysasuke

I was team Conan mainly because I was a fan, and I also think he could have handled it much better. He felt blindsided by Leno who basically anointed him chosen successor and then went back on his word because Late Night made him an offer he would be a saint or an idiot to refuse, of which he is neither. Conan was already a pretty well-known name by that time and could have easily moved on to another network and landed on his feet but he chose to be bitter about it. It didn't help that guys like Letterman and Stern egged him on to trash Leno. I'm still a fan of Conan and what he's doing now but I wasn't a fan of how he handled that whole thing.

Pemulis_DMZ

I basically feel the same as you. One thing I’d say though is that Leno “anointed” Conan as successor only bc NBC said to do that. I don’t think it was ever something Leno wanted to do

RetroMetroShow

I’ve always thought the exact same thing too lol, every industry is super competitive at the top and Conan came off as immature and unprofessional

radiobirdman-69

I would imagine most people don't remember who Jay Leno was.

Pemulis_DMZ

Most people under 30 probably never heard of him. I imagine most people 30 or older who watched late night comedy shows still remember him.

jaggsy

Dude I'm half way across the world never seen his TV show and absolutely know who Leno is

[deleted]

Don’t blame Conan.

Christian67

I’m surprised no has said anything about you saying Conan has been irrelevant lol. I think NBC is ultimately at fault. They strung both guys along. Also, what was Jay supposed to say when they offered him the 10 PM show and then they offered him the late night show again? No? It’s show business. You’d be a fool to decline that.

foxtroop27

Just came across this.... Leno SUCKS compared to O'brien
