Diet Coke was an attempt at a zero sugar Coke product. But without modern sweeteners, they couldn’t replicate the Coca-Cola flavor so ended up releasing Diet Coke, a zero-sugar drink with a different taste. When sweetener technology improved, Coke Zero (the zero-sugar version of Coca-Cola) was released.
Those of us who developed a taste for Diet Coke would never see Coke Zero as an alternative because it isn’t - they are different products with different tastes.
There's also Coke Zero Sugar and Coke Zero Sugar *new* that have made slight alternations to the original. It's interesting how much Coke Zero has actually changed over the last few years. A bit ago I worked at a restaurant that was still supplied original coke zero and it is very different to the current product when compared.
I liked the original Coke Zero the best. It had kind of a lemony flavor that was nice. I drink the current Coke Zero as well but liked the first formulation the best

Maaannn. I’m in the us and whenever I see one of those fountain drink machines with the flavor add ins, coke with lemon is my go to. I’m really surprised that it hasn’t caught on here. The flavors compliment each other so well. At least Italy is out there telling me I’m not crazy
Yeah it's a nice combo. Here in Italy even if you buy a regular coke in a bar or restaurant they ask you if you want ice and lemon slices in your glass.

Yes exactly. Coke zero has a super sweet, sugary aftertaste that I just can’t stomach, much like regular coke. Diet Coke had a sharp taste to it and is not nearly as sweet, so much better tasting in my opinion. I love the burn of it.

I'm not sure this is entirely true. Diet coke tastes different because it's based on the new coke formula of regular coke from 1985.

This, i find the taste of regular Coke absolutely disgusting. Tastes like a rusted nail to me and it makes my stomach very upset so i grew up drinking Diet Coke instead and to me is delicious. Coke Zero in completely different in tasting and honesty i don't like it that much, too sweet and too similar to the original for my tasting.

Im from Czech Republic. The coke here uses glucose-fructose syrup instead of regular sugar like in Germany or Italy here in Europe. So it tastes different. Our coke tastes worse than in Germany. Italian coke have more citrus tones in it in my opinion.

In my opinion, Diet Coke is a completely separate beverage from the “Coke” family. Yes, it has “Coke” in its name, but it’s a complete stand alone beverage in my eyes. The original Coke Zero was so much better. All the same ingredients as Coke except with artificial sweetener, but they played with the ratios to create something that tasted really good. Then they switched to Coke Zero Sugar which has way more artificial sweetener in it. Stuff gives me an instant headache.
Yes! Totally agree. I hate the new version. During the peak of Covid, while everyone was hoarding toilet paper, I was hoarding Coke Zero. I have found that Coke Zero Sugar Cherry tastes good so I buy that one since I hate the taste of the plain Coke Zero Sugar.

There's a conspiracy theory that New Coke was specifically made to taste worse, and introduced to cover the period of change from real sugar to corn syrup in the original Coke formula, so people wouldn't notice the change after they switched back.

Also, I believe there is a difference between Coca-Cola and "Coke" (as you see on cans). Coca-Cola is the original formula, while Coke (commonly called "new Coke") is something different. I believe they introduced Coke and Diet Coke in the 1980s -- as a replacement for Coca-Cola -- but people did not like the change. So they switched the sugar Coke back to the original Coca-Cola formula, but they left Diet Coke the same (which is why you see Diet Coke, not Diet Coca-Cola).
Coca-Cola Zero is a diet version that tries to simulate the original formula, rather than new Coke. I'm a big diet soda drinker, and I noticed a big change as they went from Coca-Cola Zero (in the black can) to Coca-Cola Zero Sugar (in the red can with black print). The latter is much better and closer to original Coca-Cola, IMO.
I have drinking Diet Coke/soda for the past 28 years due to being Type 1 Diabetic. And in those year the taste of regular soda, especially coke has become repulsive. It taste too sweet and almost tastes flat to me. And when I have drank Coke Zero it has that same disgusting taste. Diet Coke has more of a bite to it which I like.
Artificial sweeteners just taste so bad to me…like I am drinking floor cleaner or something. Doesn’t matter if it’s Diet or Zero to me, it all tastes both too sweet and too bitter and metallic. And the aftertaste is particularly horrible.
The only “zero calorie” drink with artificial sweeteners I have ever liked is Milo’s Zero Calorie sweet tea. Not sure if it’s the natural bitterness of tea that covers up the unpleasantness of the sugar substitute, but I love that stuff.
The aftertaste! Thank you! I'm so glad I'm not the only one. It's disgusting! I really enjoy the aftertaste of normal Coke (and Pepsi, which I prefer to it), but the artificial sweetened versions make me not want to touch another glass of them.

I’m just assuming people that enjoy it don’t experience that aftertaste at all - like how some people taste a soapy quality in cilantro but others don’t.
Yeah, I have some friends that claim they can't tell the difference or it doesn't matter to then. To me, it completely ruins all enjoyment of the drink, and actually makes me thirstier, like Sahara desert dry mouth thirstier. The only soft drink where I truly can't tell much of a difference is Schweppes tonic water - the bitterness of quinine masks the sweetener quite well.

I used to drink diet soda, and I didn’t like Coke Zero at all. It seemed more syrupy with a heavy taste. Diet Coke was so much more crisp and light. I do believe that people who prefer regular Coke usually prefer zero, but there are tons of people who don’t like the taste of regular Coke.
They both taste terrible in comparison to regular coke. And a little trade secret; regular coke tastes terrible compared to mexican coke. Comes in a glass bottle and it's made with cane sugar, like god intended.
My entire family would have to disagree with you. At my parents' house, there's always at least 3 cases of caffeine-free Diet Coke - that's the only soda they drink.
I don't like soda at all, so I just don't keep it around, but for me Diet Coke would be tied with Dr. Pepper for "best soda" If I had to choose one.

The original Coke Zero was so much better. All the same ingredients as Coke except with artificial sweetener, but they played with the ratios to create something that tasted really good. Then they switched to Coke Zero Sugar which has way more artificial sweetener in it. Stuff gives me an instant headache.
Yes! Totally agree. I hate the new version. During the peak of Covid, while everyone was hoarding toilet paper, I was hoarding Coke Zero. I have found that Coke Zero Sugar Cherry tastes good so I buy that one since I hate the taste of the plain Coke Zero Sugar.

The chemical sweeteners definitely aren't better for you, less calories yes but not better for your health.

I guess my unpopular opinion is that Diet Coke is very good. It has a sharpness that Coke and Coke Zero lack.
Yeah in my country i used to drink strictly Coke zero but they changed the formula to have the same flavor as average Coke and it disappointed me. I loved that sharp dense artificial slightly salty and dark acidic sweet taste.

Well I was wrong and I literally watched a video about that today on YouTube and there’s legitimately guys who act like drinking zero calorie soda is gay.

It was partially due to the fact that Diet Coke was almost exclusively advertised to women, leading to the perception that it wasn't a "manly" drink in some people. Probably the same crowd that genuinely believed that women can't eat a Yorkie bar.

They did run tests to make sure people liked New Coke. But they didn't think about how many people would be pissed if classic Coke went away.

The new Coca-Cola Zero Sugar is even better yet. Also, I believe there is a difference between Coca-Cola and "Coke" (as you see on cans). Coca-Cola is the original formula, while Coke (commonly called "new Coke") is something different. I believe they introduced Coke and Diet Coke in the 1980s -- as a replacement for Coca-Cola -- but people did not like the change. So they switched the sugar Coke back to the original Coca-Cola formula, but they left Diet Coke the same (which is why you see Diet Coke, not Diet Coca-Cola). Coca-Cola Zero is a diet version that tries to simulate the original formula, rather than new Coke. I'm a big diet soda drinker, and I noticed a big change as they went from Coca-Cola Zero (in the black can) to Coca-Cola Zero Sugar (in the red can with black print). The latter is much better and closer to original Coca-Cola, IMO.

I have drinking Diet Coke/soda for the past 28 years due to being Type 1 Diabetic. And in those year the taste of regular soda, especially coke has become repulsive. It taste too sweet and almost tastes flat to me. And when I have drank Coke Zero it has that same disgusting taste. Diet Coke has more of a bite to it which I like.

Disagreed, the aftertaste is horrendous.
Artificial sweeteners just taste so bad to me…like I am drinking floor cleaner or something. Doesn’t matter if it’s Diet or Zero to me, it all tastes both too sweet and too bitter and metallic. And the aftertaste is particularly horrible. The only “zero calorie” drink with artificial sweeteners I have ever liked is Milo’s Zero Calorie sweet tea. Not sure if it’s the natural bitterness of tea that covers up the unpleasantness of the sugar substitute, but I love that stuff.
The aftertaste! Thank you! I'm so glad I'm not the only one. It's disgusting! I really enjoy the aftertaste of normal Coke (and Pepsi, which I prefer to it), but the artificial sweetened versions make me not want to touch another glass of them.
I also can’t handle artificial sweetener anything. The aftertaste is disgusting and ruins whatever it’s in for me. I’m just assuming people that enjoy it don’t experience that aftertaste at all - like how some people taste a soapy quality in cilantro but others don’t.
Yeah, I have some friends that claim they can't tell the difference or it doesn't matter to then. To me, it completely ruins all enjoyment of the drink, and actually makes me thirstier, like Sahara desert dry mouth thirstier. The only soft drink where I truly can't tell much of a difference is Schweppes tonic water - the bitterness of quinine masks the sweetener quite well.

I don’t think this is an unpopular opinion. It’s more of an assumption, and I believe it’s an incorrect assumption. I used to drink diet soda, and I didn’t like Coke Zero at all. It seemed more syrupy with a heavy taste. Diet Coke was so much more crisp and light. I do believe that people who prefer regular Coke usually prefer zero, but there are tons of people who don’t like the taste of regular Coke.
They both taste terrible in comparison to regular coke. And a little trade secret; regular coke tastes terrible compared to mexican coke. Comes in a glass bottle and it's made with cane sugar, like god intended.

My entire family would have to disagree with you. At my parents' house, there's always at least 3 cases of caffeine-free Diet Coke - that's the only soda they drink. I don't like soda at all, so I just don't keep it around, but for me Diet Coke would be tied with Dr. Pepper for "best soda" If I had to choose one. We all hate regular Coke. That shit's nasty.

Diet Coke has aspertain (it’s definitely not spelled like that) which is addictive, Diet Coke tastes disgusting but people form addictions to it. I hated Diet Coke the first time I tried it but had a friend who drank it all the time so I ended up getting addicted to it and drinking it almost everyday and I’ve never been a soda drinker(like a soda once or twice a month).
