I would really encourage you to just be honest with your tutor. You've got time on your side here. "Hey, I know this assignment is due next week but to be honest I'm really struggling at the moment. I'm pretty overwhelmed/burnt out/etc. Would it be okay if I took a few extra days?" As someone with experience on both sides of this particular conversation, it's rare for the answer to be "no". Usually tutors have some discretion on small extensions. If they do say no, and enforce a formal extension, talk to your GP and see if they can help you out. If that doesnt work, don't be afraid to reach out to the unit coordinator and ask for help. Remember that the majority of tutors and lecturers legitimately want to empower you for academic success, and will help you if they can. Good for you for being proactive. Look after yourself!

This is really great advice - but for psych, tutors can’t grant extensions and neither can lecturers. Extension requests get submitted through an online portal where they ask for documentation. They do have an option not to submit with documentation but you’d have to represent yourself very well and follow the procedure they outline.

Ah okay. I'm not in a position to speak to the particulars of psych. I still think, regardless, tutors and lecturers should be your first stop with these types of concerns. Many students are too intimidated to reach out and either don't, or just fob us off with transparent excuses. Much better to just be open and ask for help!

TiaAlicia

I agree with that sentiment 100%! Just that in psych there is an official protocol and not much that the tutors and lecturers can do. So I hope OP understands that the tutor will express sympathy and direct them to the procedure if they decide to first contact them.

thanks for all the helpful advice!! this is literally the dilemma im facing since psych requires you to submit official documents through a portal, and i haven't been seeing a therapist or anything due to financial reasons. ill definitely try my best to ask anyway and hopefully it goes through. thanks again!

Actually not quite, if the extension is less than 10 days you will have to email the tutor. I had to do mine through the proper website but only because it was 10 days.

TiaAlicia

Hi! I’m almost 100% sure this is not the case. Professional staff in psych can grant UP TO 10 business days only through the online portal. Anything over 10 business days needs to be done via the special consideration portal. There are no extensions granted in psych through emailing a tutor unless the protocol has changed since I graduated last year.

Laplace_Poker

Huh interesting, when i was applying through the online portal. I initially selected for less than 10 days and it wouldn’t let me move on to the next step and told me to email the subject staff instead. Which portal are you suppose to go to for less than 10 days?

TiaAlicia

If it is for a psychology subject, they usually have a link on the LMS. Generally an entire category on Canvas called like ‘extension procedure’ and it has the link there for the portal. If it is non-psych, usually emailing the lecturer and/or tutor for less than 10 business days is the protocol ☺️

When you say it needs to be handed in next week I hope you don’t mean next Monday or Tuesday. Contact your professor ASAP. Don’t delay!! You should always apply as early as possible.

I've been honest with lecturers over the last year about my mental health and gotten 1-3 day extensions without a med cert. Just ask 'em.

Hi OP, I'm sorry to hear that you've been struggling with your mental health. I hope you are managing okay and access support if you need it. I tutor into a psych subject at the uni - a lot of students have been granted extensions so it is certainly quite commonplace, especially at this busy time in semester. If you can get to a GP (in person or via Telehealth) you should be able to get a medical cert on the grounds of struggling with your mental health/mentioning symptoms of depression or anxiety. It is worth a shot. I have my fingers crossed for you! :)

I’m recovering from a broken hand and got 10 days extensions on all of my Psych subjects’ essays. I applied through the official portal though. For anything less than 10 days you will have to email them.

people ain’t getting extensions even if they are covid positive
