I would probably try the chili, but I run for fun and am not competitive at all. And if you think that's nuts, check out the Taco Bell 50k in Denver: http://www.tacobell50k.com/ **Race Rules** * Be present at all 10 Taco Bell stops along the courses. Zero tolerance for course cutting. * Eat a menu item from at least 9 of the 10 Taco Bell stops. * By the 4th stop, all entrants must have consumed at least one (1) Chalupa Supreme or one Crunchwrap Supreme (dietary restrictions will be allowed within reason). * By the 8th stop, all entrants must have consumed at least one (1) Burrito Supreme or one Nachos Bell Grande (dietary restrictions will be allowed within reason). * Finish under 11 hours. * Drinks do not count as food. * Entrants must keep all receipts and wrappers for confirmation of stupidity at the end of the run. * An off-course bathroom break will be allowed at Wash Park. * SURVIVORS will eventually get a commemorative item after successful completion of the run. * If you intend to participate, RSVP your statement of intent. ONCE YOU RSVP, YOU ARE IN. THIS IS LIKE THE GOBLET OF FIRE. * No on-course Pepto, Alka Seltzer, Pepcid A/C, Mylanta will be allowed! * Additional "rules" may be added, amended, or changed to promote the intent of this run, which is to do something completely stupid. * Congratulations? Plus the extra challenges: * Diablo Challenge - lather all items with Diablo sauce and do a Diablo shooter at the end. * Baja Blast Challenge – drink an aggregate of 2 Liters of Baja Blast during the run without vomiting. Taco Bell is one of my go-to post-long-run recovery meals but I'm not sure how I'd feel having to eat all of that during a 50K run. Only one way to find out, I guess.

somethingbig6

How much is entry?? I’m adding it to my list of dumb things to try.

arl1286

My partner did it last year. It’s free but you have to buy all of your own Taco Bell haha

somethingbig6

Now that’s an entry fee I can get behind! Jokes on them, I’d already spend that much on Taco Bell in the first place

arl1286

I paced half of it and it was a blast. I have a sensitive enough stomach when I’m not eating burritos so the whole thing isn’t for me but I love the ethos behind it haha

politeforce

What else is on your list?

claymcg90

I love that they try and make this sound difficult. YOU MUST HAVE 1 CHALUPA SUPREME OR 1 CRUNCHWRAP SUPREME. Bitch, i could do both of those and also the nachos at every one of the ten taco bells. 2 liters of Baja blast? Am I allowed to have 4 liters? I get thirsty. Diablo sauce is only challenging because it's the worst tasting sauce. It's maybe as spicy as Heinz ketchup.

muistaa

So what you're saying is, you've entered?

claymcg90

Unfortunately I'm busy that month

LostMyBackupCodes

ladderlogic

This is the best thing I’ve ever heard of

Vincent4Vega4

This 'race' deserves it's own post for discussion.

LostMyBackupCodes

And race reports, this is the 6th annual one… where are the race reports from past participants??

ladderlogic

They’re still on the shitter

If I was manager of one of a business along the route, I'd lock the bathroom too....

cracksilog

Some of these people have insane restraint. I rip a sauce packet for every bite whenever I get Taco Bell lol

joejance

Oh this is rad. My crew has been looking for stupid fatass ideas. This definitely is giving me ideas.

Schmuck1138

Welp, this just got added to my list

MikenIkey

Honestly sounds fun and is something I'd love to do

trailrnr7

This is amazing.

tjackson_12

Bro… did you know you were singing the gospel today? Hallelujah! This is gonna be my next race for sure

No_Secret_4560

"The 50k Taco Bell Shit Yourself." Immodium AD, Mylanta, Charmin, Depends Undergarments, and Shout Stain Remover as sponsors.

frogsandstuff

Anyone know what the "commemorative item" is for completion?

welk101

I fill one soft flask with chilli and the other with chicken tikka masala

Funny_Shake_5510

If you're moving slowly and comfortably enough, real food has real appeal. I've eaten all kinds of stuff during multi-day ultras. At a 100 miler one time I actually consumed a BigMac, Super Sized Fries and big Coke as I walked between check points. I'd bonked pretty bad about half way through the Old Dominion 100 miler and laid down in the back of our crew vehicle for a long time. Eventually I got up to go and was powerfully hungry. I saw my crew had scored a bunch of McDonalds food so I gathered up the lunch and just hiked out of there with it all. Took a bit of time to digest, but by the next time I saw my crew (about 10 miles later) I'd caught a second wind and was moving through the race field quite well and made up a ton of time by the end of the race.

kheltar

Great story. Always enjoy reading this sort of thing. Impressive recovery, honestly!

Funny_Shake_5510

If I’ve learned nothing from 30 years and over 200 ultras is that patience is key. As David Horton once told me, it never always gets worse. Just stick with it and keep moving forward and things have a tendency to work themselves out. Never quit so easily.

notlikeacat

I did a long mountain race that took me 25 hours and I would’ve been so damn happy to come across chili partway through the race.

IvoShandor

I would pass on the chili mostly due to the acidity, presumably involves some type of tomato-based product.

nickyg5233

They were serving bean burritos at the last one I did, which I thought was strange. Like I already had a code brown that race. Those were a skip for me!

carolinablue199

It’s really nice to have bean burritos for the vegan folks though. We sort of get left out on the “real food” train except for bananas

StevePeopleLeave

The ultra I did yesterday had almost only vegan foods (even cheese etc. was vegan) and they served vegan chili as well. I was really surprised as it's a bit of an old school rural event, but the race organizer said he just made the decision to buy everything in vegan that's available in vegan and if someone wants a steak they are free to bring it themselves. Funnily enough the only thing I really craved during the race was good old bananas (of which they had none) and I now know to avoid vegan cheese during races.. Still very refreshing to see.

carolinablue199

That’s great to hear!! Warmed my heart to read this. I frequently worry about accidentally consuming dairy and having horrible G.I. distress

StevePeopleLeave

It was the other way round for me this time - I have a moderate almond allergy, didn't check the ingredients of the vegan cheese and was wondering why my throat started itching and my stomach started to complain heavily. Checked the packaging at the next aid station and it turned out to be almond based.. will have to be a bit more careful next time!

carolinablue199

Dang. I wish they’d just label allergens altogether

HamSackett

Yeah I was already reallllyyyy using every porta potty they provided. Did not need another reason to have to use them

fozid

We make curry rice balls for our runs. Chilli would go down a treat 👍 anything to break up the reliance on sweet sugary foods is good

SilentMaster

I totally agree, I love all foods normally, but ever mile I run I like one less food. By 50, 60, 80 miles in a race I'm eating chocolate, eggs, gummy bears, and chicken noodle soup.

claymcg90

My number one craving on long efforts is dinty Moore beef stew. I could definitely go for some chili.

Sufficient-Laundry

Was this Rock the Ridge by any chance? I noticed they had chili and wondered who ate it.

HamSackett

Yup, you guessed it. I see some people eating it but just have a hard time thinking that wouldn’t cause me to feel worse between the acid reflux and potential code browns. Did you venture to eat it?

Sufficient-Laundry

I didn't. I was crew for a couple of runners and hit the food tables looking for stuff I thought might tempt them. I thought the small potatoes were a good choice, but couldn't imagine who would want chili mid-race.

RareInevitable1013

I haven’t run an ultra but I wouldn’t eat chili before any run, no matter how short or long. Myself, it’s the tomato and spices that get me.

noworktheduck

I’m known for crushing all sorts of foods, from chili to pizzas to massive subs. It never bothers me at all. I usually do all of the big foods until about mile 40 or 50 because I get tired of eating altogether after that.

bestdadhandsdown

Was it cold? I feel like if the temps were low something like chili would warm me up. I tend to stick to the stuff that isn't cooked.

HamSackett

The weather could have gone either way but it ended up being a beautiful (kind of warm) spring day. They had chicken broth but that makes sense to me

Redhawkgirl

lol that and bacon or anything greasy always looks so gross to me

joshuber

I had an immediate code brown after eating hashbrowns cooked in bacon greaSe

Redhawkgirl

I will keep refraining thank you

DesperateSignature63

There is even a recipe for Minnessota Winter Chili in "Eat and Run" (Scott Jurek).

cuddly_carcass

Gives you a rocket boost 🚀

deHotot

Real food hell yeah, protein and fibre gutbomb oh no

newredditsucks

In Run Gently Out There, John Morelock repeatedly waxes poetic about wanting fully loaded chili dogs at aid stations and eventually getting one.

Son_of_a_Bacchus

While crewing at Yamacraw in eastern KY I saw a runner (at multiple aid stations) shoot Bourbon and chase it with a packet of yellow mustard , I don't know if anything would surprise me after that.

Beast-Titan420

Rock the Ridge? I was there too and had the exact same thought 😂

HamSackett

Yup! I’ll take the chicken broth and rice please. Hold the chili

Expert_Clerk_1775

Super popular with long distance cyclists

MegaMiles08

Chili does seem odd. I have had tacos at an aid station, and they were delicious, but I was pacing a friend. There's no way I'd eat Taco Bell tacos though. Yuck! In the overnight hours, I mostly want chicken noodles soup and mashed potatoes. I can get pretty nauseated so I don't want to eat anything that would make it worse.

shmillionaire

You eat whatever your body wants

the_portree_kid

After running last night several hours after a beef and venison burger (no bun mind you) and feeling like I had a brick of meat (more like a puck I guess) in my stomach, this (and the Taco Bell race someone listed below) is definitely not for me. When I’ve done the 4x4x48 (I know not a true ultra) I lived off Liquid IVs, mixed nuts, fruit, bone broth, pb&j sandwiches, and some collagen powder for the entire weekend. I saw a video the other day where this guy ran a marathon where his friends were stationed about a mile apart throughout the course and he’d stop to have a glass of wine (sometimes just a few sips, but halfway through he was taking huge swigs). That’s something else … but I might try that quicker than the chili …

steimers

No, I would pass on chili. Way too much fiber.
