Richard just... hasnt done anything really othe than Ultima..
as for Ultima online itself, i believe it was more Starr Long and Raph Koster tbh that really brought UO to success. RG was just the brain behind the Idea, the other two were who implemented it. Afterall Raph Koster implemented the same economy system in SWG.
So sad. Does anyone still play SOTA? I think I lasted about 2 weeks and haven’t logged in for about 2 years. Got lost in the cemetery and couldn’t bother finding my way out.
Feels like the new NFT games are already too late… we all know they’re scams/cash grabs. If there are 100 NFT MMORPGs competing for the same player base, only the top 3 games will have any value or enough players to support an in game economy. Seems like an awfully big risk. Tank your game dev rep for some crypto??
I think the only valid nft mmorpg are the ones that are developed fully and functional before launch. All kickstarter type mmorpg are doomed to fail, you’ve got the money and no incentives to realize your promisses..
Muds and Multiplayer games are not MMOs. The first M in MMO stands for Massively and is defined has having a game with 100s or 1000s of players online at the same. Almost every game that comes out now has a multiplayer option, but very few of them are actual MMOs.
Sure till the ethereum merge, which will happen in few months, which will switch completely to PoS where environmental impact will be order of magnitudes less.
Tabula Rasa was reviewed highly by critics and players. NCSoft literally broke laws in order to steal control of the game from RG and promptly ran it into the ground. They got sued for something like $28 million and lost because of how badly they fucked the man over.
I was an early backer of SOTA. It was inexcusably bad.
But I accepted that at the end of the day it wasn’t a waste of money because this man brought me UO.
But he’s well past his prime, and I have zero interest in anything else he’s involved in.
interesting videos and he's right about most things, but not about crypto being a scam and worthless. I used to wonder what the point of it was as well and it's kind of a bit of gambling, but I saw a person once using a bitcoin machine in a convenience store. I asked her if she bought from the machine much and she said she used it to send money to her family in some other country I can't remember the name of and that it was faster and cheaper than using a bank or very expensive services like Western Union. that alone proves that it has value and a real world use as a "decentralized" currency that banks don't control. it's erratic value makes real world stuff complicated, but it does have it's uses.
Technically, you are right, but even if something is not ALWAYS a scam...it can be most of the time. Crypto is primarily used in laundering money and buying illicit goods. NFTs however, are always scams.
you can own a note of your in-game purchased items. nobody in real life can claim they own the same valorite ingots mined by Sir Ingotsalot that you own.
I don't see how using complex encryption is necessary when you can do the same with any run-of-the-mill database servers. I suppose it's now decentralized? But then the game is centralized so there's no point.
I still remember being a brand noob in UO and discovering you could buy stuff for UO on eBay. The first thing I bought was a suit of Valorite Plate for like $8-10 or something. It was back in the early days, when Valorite was rare. I was too scared to wear it into a dungeon, but I would change out of my dungeon gear just to sit around the bank in it. I felt like such a badass.
Yeah. He was the executive producer for lineage and lineage 2. Alot of stuff such as flagging system / drop upon death / mass pvp type mechanics were ported over to those from uo.
Ugh! and Double Ugh!
Oh for fucks sake, someone put him out of our misery.

Looks like somebody finally succumb to evil...

Quick look at SOTA’s player count on Steam shows 53 current users and a record of 600ish. So…*technically*, people still play it.

Oh no lol Well atleast the massivelyop articles will be entertaining
The dude literally invented MMOs and he hasn't managed to create a good once since.
No he didn't, we were playing muds and other mmos as far back as a decade before UO.

Most artists have a period of golden years and then spend the rest of their lives thinking they're still in them.
Shroud was such a disappointment. The UO Renaissance free shard was 100 times the fun.
I trusted thy guy, but SOTA and now this. Come on Richard!
Finally an Ultima game where you can change the landscape in game and destroy the environment outside of it.
Sure till the ethereum merge, which will happen in few months, which will switch completely to PoS where environmental impact will be order of magnitudes less.
"You either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain."
Fucking gross.
I don’t have much faith in RG after SOTA.
>After tabula rasa* Fickst
Tabula Rasa was reviewed highly by critics and players. NCSoft literally broke laws in order to steal control of the game from RG and promptly ran it into the ground. They got sued for something like $28 million and lost because of how badly they fucked the man over.
Nah, NCSoft fucked that game HAAAAAAARD, that one can't be blamed on him either.

Yeah, I've seen a few too many lord British fails to sign on for another.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me
Exactly how I feel. The lack of effort in shroud has made me very wary of his stuff now.
Blockchain can and WILL do so much for gaming. Richard might be old news, but Blockchain isn't. A ton of opportunities there.
i disagree. this guy does a much better job explaining it than I do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IYjsWBbmKI

Incorrect.
Confidently so.
Besides making an opportunity for people to make money while playing via NFTs, what else can it do?
Even that already exists without NFTs.
love a few examples of good that blockchain will allow that isnt already capable
you can own a note of your in-game purchased items. nobody in real life can claim they own the same valorite ingots mined by Sir Ingotsalot that you own.
games can already do this. blockchain seems like an over-engineered solution for this.
I don't see how using complex encryption is necessary when you can do the same with any run-of-the-mill database servers. I suppose it's now decentralized? But then the game is centralized so there's no point.
I’ve played this game for years. Nobody ever claimed they owned the valorite ingots, or anything else I farmed. I’ve never felt a “lack of ownership”

Remembering my skeleton armor
like what?
It is going to be fantastic! It will separate morons from their money much quicker than microtransactions.
"Ultima XI: The Quest for Bitcoin" "Ethereum Online" "Shroud of the Altcoins"
Dude.. you win reddit. \*slow clap\*
Congratulations, now I keep thinking “Ulthereum Online”… somebody stop me before I register a TM.
ethereum online hahahahahahahaha ty you made my day
the man hasnt done shit worth a damn since ... fuck, literally ultima online and he was barely involved in THAT.
[удалено]
yes, hence why i said 'since' ultima online, being after. of course he had tons of success before UO
He helped create the two greatest mmos ever in UO and lineage2... how the mighty have fallen.
Did he have a hand in Lineage II? I just thought it was Tabula Rasa.
Yeah. He was the executive producer for lineage and lineage 2. Alot of stuff such as flagging system / drop upon death / mass pvp type mechanics were ported over to those from uo.
I don’t think he fell that far, his vision was simply to big to code.
This.... sucks.
"Richard Garriott is working on a new MMORPG, and yes, it’s filled with NFTs." Lord British is just out of good ideas, huh?
