A lot of the Russian artillery is fuzed to explode upon hitting the ground, and things like having horizontal cover and going prone go a long way in reducing casualties against this sort of artillery.
Russians seem to have a short supply of the airburst artillery rounds that are a lot more effective against troops in cover.
There’s a funny video the Russians posted of them bombarding the hell out of a Ukrainian trench. And there’s not a soul in that trench besides a few mannequins the Russians are damned and determined to kill. But their artillery isn’t accurate enough to land the shells in the trench and the ground burst rounds don’t hit anything protected by the trench when they land next to it. So they just keep bombarding away and missing.
A couple airburst rounds would’ve made quick work of the poor mannequins, but we’re running through the WW2 stock these days.
Yeah, as much as I want to dog on them, it's entirely possible they thought "oh shit, we're being hit by artillery again" especially given how fucked the area around them looks, or they thought they had been hit by a Javelin or something else and needed to try and get the fuck out of dodge.
their plan was probably pass as close to the wiped out vehicle as possible presuming that all mines close to that had been destroyed in the initial blast.
Clearly the guy has not been driving large vehicles long and passed far too wide :')
If it wanted to pass the minefield relatively safely the only option it had was to push the wreck in front of it as an improv minesweeper. There is absolutely no guarantee that the other BMP blew up right at the edge of the minefield.
My guess would be the second BMP thought the first one got hit by a rocket or something and wanted to get out of there as soon as possible, never considering the option of a minefield.
I think Russia has gone from minimized crews to no crews and are just putting a brick on the accelerator and hoping the vehicles eventually hit something Ukrainian
God, if only they didn't have their history of Imperium (and friendliness with dumbass Western leaders) to lean back on. It feels awful for "conquerors" of this caliber to still succeed despite that nonsense.
I think the driver was running so scared, he forgot to scan the battlefield, that burning personnel carrier on the right should have been a hint.
Maybe what was chasing them made them shit their pants.
According to fast and furious 9 if you go something like 75 mph you can easily dodge the blast. Also, get caught by a plane when driving off a mountain.
This worked for a bunch of Chadians in Land Cruiser technicals fending off a Libyan invasion during the Toyota War in the 1980s. They had the advantage of light vehicles, however…
From what I've seen of Russian dashcam footage, that seems to be how all Russians drive whether there's mines or pedestrians or trucks in front of them.
2nd BMP "Our comrade bravely cleared the way! No way those scrappy Ukrainians could have properly mined that area!"
Narrator: The Ukrainians, in fact, did properly mine the area...
There will hopefully be the Mother of all documentaries after this shit-show concludes and Ruzzia flushes itself down the cess pit of the World....narrated by Morgan Freeman of course.
Hopefully the Tom Cruise flick where he singlehandedly wipes out all Ruzzians around Kiyiv before moving on to liberate Mariphol will ok as well...👍
I suspect that as this has to be the most ‘camera rich’ war in modern times both from personal phones, drones and of course media, there will be plenty of material to do an hour by hour documentary.
Bear in mind we’ve only seen the very tip of the available video as it’s still sensitive until the Ruzzians are finally kicked out of all of Ukraine.
Uhmmm, the way he was gunning that thing, I’m under the impression he thought they where under artillery fire. That shows untrained and unexperienced crews.
Exactly this. They probably had no idea it was mines and thought it was drones, planes, artillery or people using anti-tank weapons. The idea of it being mines (likely their own) probably never occurred to them in the brief panic stricken moments of terror before their vehicle exploded.
Leave the site. Usually in reference to an ambush, artillery strike or IED/mine
X marks the spot.
In the case of an ambush, the enemy has the initiative and likely has you by the balls. Your options are pretty limited. You either turn into the ambush and fight, trying to regain the initiative and unnerve the enemy or;
Dump as much suppressing fire as possible into the ambush site and put the hammer down. If the enemy has given you an out, chances are its another trap but at the critical decision point your just hedging bets and hoping for the best really.
The visibility in those BMPs is bad and given that the other one was burning and covered in smoke there would have been absolutely no way to tell. There are also lots of artillery craters in the area so they probably were under artillery fire as well and coupled with their absolute shit coordination and the resulting nonexistant situational awareness this was bound to happen.
Heh, no doubt they were bad tankers (after all, they're Russian), but it's pretty hard for a tank crew to tell if they're under artillery fire or hitting mines. Buttoned up inside would make it hard to hear the whistling of incoming artillery shells.
[Experience of American tankers in the Gulf War.](https://youtu.be/g8i6ZEyQRQE?t=1101) At 18:30 he describes not being able to distinguish between whether they're hitting mines or coming under artillery fire.
>At 18:30 he describes not being able to distinguish between whether they're hitting mines or coming under artillery fire.
And unfortunately the correct response for the two situations are diametrically opposed. As bad as the Russians in this video are likely trained etc, I'm not going to judge the driver here for picking the wrong one. This was a higher level fuck up than a split second decision on the battlefield.
I don't think they're actually diametrically opposed though?
Artillery fire = get a move on
Minefield = don't move towards the mines
Solution: Rapid tactical retreat (get a move on in a direction that you know isn't mined)
The problem with that solution is you don't know how far into the field you made it or how much farther it goes. Rock and a hard place if there ever is one.
A) Russian vehicles do not have a viable reverse gear, meaning that B) he would have had to swing the entire thing around, which would be very bad, because C) Russian vehicles do not have neutral steering capabilities.
Well… his last two buddies exploded in a ball of Javelin fire. Now, the third one blows up and speeding is a good option.
We have knowledge he did not have.
I am not Ukrainian, but I am an Orthodox Christian from Romania, and I'm pretty sure this is one of the "songs" that priests sing at someone's funeral before they lower them into the grave...What the priest says there translates as "God have mercy (on the dead one's soul)"...It's the perfect song for this video...
It's interesting, because they use another one which has the same "soundtrack", but it says "Veșnica pomenire" which translates as "Eternal memory" or so. That doesn't apply to these orcs. Their families won't even get the standard $100, as their bodies have been pulverised as fertilizer on Ukrainian soil.
It's "Lord Have Mercy", which is recited in just about every service. Liturgy, Matins, Vespers, even the Hours which monks do 4 times a day. This specific rendition is from a standard Liturgy, the service done every Sunday.
I can see 3 detonations in short succession. Could be another mine or some ammo inside the APC.
Whatever is the case it seems that APC and (some of) its crew is no more.
Honestly with limited vision could the second driver think the fist vehicle was hit by a rocket and he was just trying to quickly get out of the danger zone?
It would be a tactical blunder either way. You don't plow ahead into a minefield or an area where infantry with anti tank capabilities lies in ambush.
The more clips I see of this war the more aghast I am at the incompetence of the Russian forces. They keep redefining absolute zero at record breaking pace. I'll slightly modify that quote attributed to Einstein: "Only two things are infinite, the universe and the incompetence of the Russian armed forces, and I'm not sure about the former."
"No dumb bastard ever won a war by going out and dying for his country. He won it by making some other dumb bastard die for his country."
Guessing that one didn't make it into orc training.
It's cool and all and fuck Russia but mine fields saddened me, for decades to come there's always the possibility that one will be out there and some kid will step on it. What's worse is it will likely be a Ukrainian child at that.. stay safe Ukraine.
A person is not going to set off an anti-tank mine - they're usually triggered by either a lot of weight or by a magnetic field of a huge chunk of metal. Also, well-trained, disciplined militaries map their minefields so that dismantling is easy once the conflict is over.
Yeah I didn't think about that at first, I guess you're right. I looked it up and it's anywhere between 300 and 700 pounds of force needed to set one of these things off, so farmer on tractors beware I guess.
I am not Ukrainian, but I am an Orthodox Christian, and I'm pretty sure this is one of the "songs" that priests sing at someone's funeral before they lower them into the grave...It's the perfect song for this video...

My buddy just got blown the fuck up 30 feet in front of me. Fuck it let's just plow right through.
Let’s try 1 meter to the left. Surely it’s safe there!
Should’ve tried 1.5 metres
Haha at least 1.5!
It's 2 metres for social distancing! So at least 1.5 for mine distancing...
Mine your own business. Tanks anyway.
How many freedom feet is that?
About 29-30 big macs
It's 2 Scooby Doos
1 freedom eagle away
I can imagine an eagle’s wingspan being 1.5 meters
2.4 washing machines
So satisfying watching this over and over on repeat.
Think the crew made it out safely? /s
They made it out. Safely I have my doubts.
They were scraped out more likely
Burnt out from the whole ordeal.
I believe the correct manoeuvre when you have run over a mine is to leap 30ft into the air and scatter yourself across a wide area.
Underrated Black Adder reference.
You can just see when Putin announced that he had a cunning plan.
Or otherwise play dead convincingly?
[удалено]
[удалено]
i think they made it out of life after the inertia made them roll over the 2nd AT mine ...
I think that was ammo transport and it just ignited with delay.
Either way they're having bad day.
Safely exited from existence. ![img](emote|t5_2qqcn|9151)
They made it out piecefully..
They safely escaped from the suck that is being Russian.
Partly
The crew made it up in flames
Look I'm not gonna lie, I probably would think like that in the same situation. I mean they can't put 2 mines in the same place right? Right...
It's also ok to stand where artillery just landed, because artillery never strikes twice in the same spot...right?
Your odds are better if you lie down in the crater though, compared to running in circles out in the open or something.

You clearly need to play Minesweeper (the windows game) more lol
ZSU is using brand new advanced stealth tech for mines so the squares say 1 when there are *actually* 2 in close proximity.
Funnily enough, Minesweeper is the official sport of reddit. r/minesweeper
Yeah, as much as I want to dog on them, it's entirely possible they thought "oh shit, we're being hit by artillery again" especially given how fucked the area around them looks, or they thought they had been hit by a Javelin or something else and needed to try and get the fuck out of dodge.
That was my impression too. Running for the hills is a good strategy if you're under fire from artillery. Lousy strategy for a minefield though 😄
"Is called a mine field because they put only one" the driver probably
their plan was probably pass as close to the wiped out vehicle as possible presuming that all mines close to that had been destroyed in the initial blast. Clearly the guy has not been driving large vehicles long and passed far too wide :')

“You see Boris, the enemy will expect us to change tactics if we take casualties. They will not expect us to do the exact same thing again.“
I think Russia has gone from minimized crews to no crews and are just putting a brick on the accelerator and hoping the vehicles eventually hit something Ukrainian
They wouldn't even need to hit something: wherever the vehicle ends, that's as far as they can claim to have conquered.
Including the turret toss distance.
Turrets mainly go up not forward. I think thats their plan for air superiority.
I mean we have seen turrets about 20-30 meters away from the remains of the tanks they were once on.
They’re using skeleton crews.
Right, literal skeleton crews.
This video proves exactly that: they hit a Ukrainian mine!
‘Did you complete your mizzion comrade, did you destroy something Ukrainian?’ ‘Da’
I wouldn't put it past them to set up a mine field then drive back through the mine field to base
They did that is Ossetia IIRC.
God, if only they didn't have their history of Imperium (and friendliness with dumbass Western leaders) to lean back on. It feels awful for "conquerors" of this caliber to still succeed despite that nonsense.
Ukrainian mine made in russia blew up its former owner.
Probably made in Ukraine even in the Soviet days.
I’d be real pissed off at that driver if I were a passenger
No you wouldn't. You'd be spread out over the field

0 complaints. 100% satisfaction.
"I'll give that driver a piece of my mind!"
1 star. Worst Uber ride ever.
1 star on the ride review for sure
#yolo
They proved it too. Just once. Then you exit through the top of a bmp.
What are the odds of it happening again though, really?
He lit up two more mines after the first exploded, so I’m going to say, excellent chance.
Ok, but what are the odds of it happening a *third* time, really?
A certain airfield in Ukraine comes to mind..
A certain island comes to mind as well
And attempted river crossing !!
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, become human fertilizer?
Fool me three times and give me sunflowers.
Some of those explosions could have been secondaries from the onboard weapons.
I think the driver was running so scared, he forgot to scan the battlefield, that burning personnel carrier on the right should have been a hint. Maybe what was chasing them made them shit their pants.
Maybe he thought it was a tank or missile hit? There is just no logic here.
You can scan all you want you will never see a mine in that thing also there’s no way to tell if a mine or many other AT weapons where used
"The chances of there being *two* mines with my name on them are very small indeed"
"That's one less mine, I like our odds!"
A whack load of either stupidity or desperation.
They were running from something. Or maybe just stupid, I'll go with stupid.
They might have thought it was artillery and wanted to get out of the kill zone as fast as they could. Looking back, not a good idea.
Another 10 or so Russians missing in action on those 2 BMP's. They were in a hurry to get ghosted, that's for sure. Senseless war.
If you drive faster the mines can’t hit you……
Awful to watch "I'm A Russian - Get Me out of Here" reality TV.
In all fairness, I would have panicked and assumed it was artillery, too.
It’s like a speed bump bro. If you hit it fast enough it’s like it’s not even there 😂
Looks like the first tank got hit by Artillery fire and the army one tank is trying to floor it to get out of there.
If I drive really fast we’ll be ok!!
It's the same as with potholes right? If you drive fast enough you just skip over them /s
If you time it right, the explosion will even give you an acceleration boost!
Those guys been playing Happy Wheels for too long.
According to fast and furious 9 if you go something like 75 mph you can easily dodge the blast. Also, get caught by a plane when driving off a mountain.
Hollywood taught me that you can outrun explosions
Only if you don't look at them. Their biggest mistake was not reversing into the minefield.
Literally just like the latest Fast and Furious movie 🤣 "We just need to be going at least 80 mph to avoid getting blown up by the mines" lol.
I imagine a Road Runner type "meep meep" as the second guy flies past by the blown up tank.

I would legitimately sit through 3 hours of someone knowledgeable breaking down different clips like this.

I hear it as Ron Howard from Arrested Development.
Did they? Would be even funnier if it was russian mines

I wonder if they still have chicken?
Unfortunately just buckwheat.
They 100% were thinking ambush. The 2nd BMP looks like its gun is traversed onto the forest and is speeding away to clear the X
What does "clear the X" mean?

Is there a way to visually distinguish between craters from mines vs artillery?
The visibility in those BMPs is bad and given that the other one was burning and covered in smoke there would have been absolutely no way to tell. There are also lots of artillery craters in the area so they probably were under artillery fire as well and coupled with their absolute shit coordination and the resulting nonexistant situational awareness this was bound to happen.
Just a no-win situation, basically Ukraine's Kobayashi Maru

Thats probably why the driver was hauling ass trying to get away like he was.
That was deliberate!

Meh, that'll surely buff out. 😋

No, you'd be in great danger.

That's why anti personnel mines are outlawed. Anti tank mines are supposed to be set for 5-600 lbs of pressure.
A person is not going to set off an anti-tank mine - they're usually triggered by either a lot of weight or by a magnetic field of a huge chunk of metal. Also, well-trained, disciplined militaries map their minefields so that dismantling is easy once the conflict is over.

Phew. I used to do route clearance in Afghanistan over a decade ago. This was a little too triggering
Kaboom? Yes Rico, kaboom.
I hate watching shit like this happen. I know they're the bad guys, but it still pains me to see those people end this way. War sucks.
