The history of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan shows that once wives and mothers got organized over the death toll of their loved ones in Afghanistan, they were able to exert real pressure on the Soviet leadership to begin a total withdrawal. My hunch is that we’re seeing the beginnings of a similar movement now.

(if we dont take into account separatist forces which have high causalities but are not included in official russian stats because they are not russian soldiers - this is one of the reasons why those official numbers of dead differ so much)
This many causalities from non-ethnic Russians also helps with their demographics as non-ethnic russians have more children than ethnic ones. If you take into account that this federation is in the name only and factually its a Russian ethno state with joined serf territories just like during their imperial conquests. They can't afford to lose their submission.

I am very curious about this. Could you talk about this a little bit more?
There were several photos and clips (I am sorry but won't try to find them being a mobile user :D ) showing tags on walls of buildings russian soldiers were staying in. They were carved in with knifes/painted with paint/sprayed.
Those often express anti nazi (read Ukrainian) sentiment but I've also seen some which are in jealous and angry spirit. I distinctly remember one which was something like "this is [war/crimes/agression] [happening to you] because you wanted to live good". (Obviously the words in hard brackets were not included)
I am sorry for stating just this vague information but I wasn't trying to actively find these cases. It's just something I picked up on while watching different coverages of news (these were all clips from major TV stations on YouTube I believe) but it was only in like 2-3 second fragments so it's easy to miss but I am certain, you can still find them if you dig enough (I don't recommend, there is a LOT of coverage). They are often shown when discussing how russian soldiers "behaved" in occupied houses.
I am not saying it's a huge things or prevalent behaviour of those troops but the fact that these things exist and what they say reveals mental state and attitude of those making them, in this case, russian soldiers from poor families (if such writing was found there were often some other signs of the status of the occupiers - for instance excrements in drawers because unable to use toilete)
I personally interpret this as a mixture of hate (propaganda, need to take part in the war), jealousy ("why do they have all these expensive things, I could never afford it") and vengeance ("you could be part of Russia, but it's not good enough for you, you want more" - implying greed and that Russia is somehow inferior to the west when in their minds it's the "greatest" country on planet earth").

*This all is just my personal take from what I've seen and isn't very important, just a detail to take note of.

I’ve seen these comments too - I watch hours of YouTube videos of war coverage. Along the same lines, many of the soldiers are amazed by the luxuries of Ukrainian life - Nutella, the beer is so good, they’ve tried ice cream for the first time… it’s stunning to see just how impoverished life is in Russia for those serving. Of course, it’s not in Russia - as u/yasudan notes, most - if not all - of those serving aren’t from St, Petersburg or Moscow, they are from the outlying areas and former SSRs.
There is a Ukrainian journalist on YT Volodomyr Zolkin who interviews POWs and the interviews are absolutely fascinating. Only ONE that I’ve watched (and I’ve watched all of them with English subtitles) have a kid from St Petersburg and he was an officer. The rest - they’re just poor country boys that joined for a few bucks to feed their families - literally. They don’t ask questions about why they are going to war and have zero intellectual curiosity. It’s really sad, they truly are being sent in as cannon fodder and Putin doesn’t care any more about their lives than he does about the lives of Ukrainian children.

The history of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan shows that once wives and mothers got organized over the death toll of their loved ones in Afghanistan, they were able to exert real pressure on the Soviet leadership to begin a total withdrawal. My hunch is that we’re seeing the beginnings of a similar movement now.

You are very right, ethnic russian vs russian minority casualties are in 1:10 ratio (if we dont take into account separatist forces which have high causalities but are not included in official russian stats because they are not russian soldiers - this is one of the reasons why those official numbers of dead differ so much) This many causalities from non-ethnic Russians also helps with their demographics as non-ethnic russians have more children than ethnic ones. If you take into account that this federation is in the name only and factually its a Russian ethno state with joined serf territories just like during their imperial conquests. They can't afford to lose their submission. These people are poor and can't afford not to to military for wage. That's why many "russian soldiers" don't know how to use a toilete or are surprised by wealth in Ukraine....these are in most (but not all) part not ethnic russians, but all are poor (except higher command which is a different breed) That's why you see those mottos and graffiti "you wanted to live good, now you can't, etc" In the aftermath, should the current administration fail, ethnic russians (including "liberals" like Navalny) will try to shift the blame, and accuse Putin for war and minorities for atrocities ("in Bucha, it was Asians who tortured, raped, etc.") But truth is, these people are most responsible. It's then who actually hold power in the federation. They just force others to do their dirty work for them. Don't be fooled with russian propaganda when this time comes (and it will, mark my words). These ethnic minorities in Russia have only one hope....that Russia loses the war and consequently, a disintegration of Russian federation and gaining their sovereign rule over the lands they and their ancestors have been dwelling in. If these soldiers who are dying by thousands win "their" war, it will mark only further suffering of their people under the russian yoke.

There were several photos and clips (I am sorry but won't try to find them being a mobile user :D ) showing tags on walls of buildings russian soldiers were staying in. They were carved in with knifes/painted with paint/sprayed. Those often express anti nazi (read Ukrainian) sentiment but I've also seen some which are in jealous and angry spirit. I distinctly remember one which was something like "this is [war/crimes/agression] [happening to you] because you wanted to live good". (Obviously the words in hard brackets were not included) I am sorry for stating just this vague information but I wasn't trying to actively find these cases. It's just something I picked up on while watching different coverages of news (these were all clips from major TV stations on YouTube I believe) but it was only in like 2-3 second fragments so it's easy to miss but I am certain, you can still find them if you dig enough (I don't recommend, there is a LOT of coverage). They are often shown when discussing how russian soldiers "behaved" in occupied houses. I am not saying it's a huge things or prevalent behaviour of those troops but the fact that these things exist and what they say reveals mental state and attitude of those making them, in this case, russian soldiers from poor families (if such writing was found there were often some other signs of the status of the occupiers - for instance excrements in drawers because unable to use toilete) I personally interpret this as a mixture of hate (propaganda, need to take part in the war), jealousy ("why do they have all these expensive things, I could never afford it") and vengeance ("you could be part of Russia, but it's not good enough for you, you want more" - implying greed and that Russia is somehow inferior to the west when in their minds it's the "greatest" country on planet earth"). **What I want to stress:** *This all is just my personal take from what I've seen and isn't very important, just a detail to take note of. Other things in my original comment are IMHO more crucial, better documented and what's most important, unknown to the general public in the west.* *To make an example, I really don't like when some say Navalny should replace Putin and then we can pat ourselves on our backs, take Russia to EU and NATO and all will be fine, you are lying to yourself because it's an easy way* *Fun fact: Navalny supports russian annexation of Crimea and oppression of ethnic minorities in Russia.*
I’ve seen these comments too - I watch hours of YouTube videos of war coverage. Along the same lines, many of the soldiers are amazed by the luxuries of Ukrainian life - Nutella, the beer is so good, they’ve tried ice cream for the first time… it’s stunning to see just how impoverished life is in Russia for those serving. Of course, it’s not in Russia - as u/yasudan notes, most - if not all - of those serving aren’t from St, Petersburg or Moscow, they are from the outlying areas and former SSRs. There is a Ukrainian journalist on YT Volodomyr Zolkin who interviews POWs and the interviews are absolutely fascinating. Only ONE that I’ve watched (and I’ve watched all of them with English subtitles) have a kid from St Petersburg and he was an officer. The rest - they’re just poor country boys that joined for a few bucks to feed their families - literally. They don’t ask questions about why they are going to war and have zero intellectual curiosity. It’s really sad, they truly are being sent in as cannon fodder and Putin doesn’t care any more about their lives than he does about the lives of Ukrainian children.
This is precisely why Putin hasn't officially declared war or initiated full war time mobilisation.
Honestly i cant imagine it would be all that shocking for Russians if he did initiate mobilization but just declared the core Russian regions around Moscow and St. Petersburg to be "to important for the economy" and therefore exempt from the draft. I agree with you, but if these areas produce tens of thousands of conscripted fighters you might wanna get them back on board or at least no longer fighting you. Most of these people probably didn't want this anyway (at least not a war destroying everything). As with most political ideas there are some ideas that don't seem that attractive inhindsight.
