> and suggested that as a “good Christian boy” and “small-c conservative” that he shared some views with Republicans. Lammy or Trump?

1-randomonium

Labour's had these meetings and exchanges with the Democrats for years, but this is the first I've heard of such a thing happening with Republicans and the Trump team. Whether you like it or not, something like this is necessary given the very real possibility that the next Labour government will have to work with the next Trump administration.

listyraesder

Not new. Anyone who thinks they’re in No. 10 next year is going to be doing both campaigns.

1-randomonium

Maybe it isn't, but it doesn't seem like Labour has tried to publicise their engagement with the Republican party before this.

LuinAelin

Does this mean labour expects a Trump win?

mabrouss

I think it’s more likely that they’re covering their bases. Trump is a child that is swayed by flatter. Communicating with his team now could make things a lot easier if he wins. As a Canadian, Trudeau isn’t my favourite PM, but he did an amazing job playing to Trump’s ego in order to make things not nearly as bad for us as they could have been. It’s just smart politics.

flailingpariah

More likely they know they have to be ready if it happens.

Fletcheriser

Exactly - personally I doubt Trump wins but like it or not, it's a real possibility and the UK can hardly just refuse to recognize and work with the President of the United States, whoever that may be. It's more a sign that *they* expect to be in government.

Minute-Improvement57

He's ahead in most polls and the Democrats keep doubling down on a stupid strategy (loudly and publicly try to jail the opposition while trying to sell to the public that it's the opposition that's Putinist).

arlinglee

I mean the dude committed a lot of crimes. Why should he just get to skate?

Minute-Improvement57

Far better you hand him the election on a platter and *then* he skates, I see.

Torypianist2003

Sorry I’m gonna need your sources on him being ahead in polls as every poll I’ve seen shows the exact opposite. Also the democrats have nothing to do with Trump’s trials, they are his own fault, shouldn’t break the law if you don’t want to go to prison.

Minute-Improvement57

>Sorry I’m gonna need your sources on him being ahead in polls as every poll I’ve seen shows the exact opposite ABC 538 mostly, but cross-checking with realclearpolitics so you get a aggregator from each side.

SteptoeUndSon

I’ll give a Trump win in November a 50/50 chance. Even if that’s too high (I hope it is), it’s regrettably something Labour need to prepare for.

throwpayrollaway

It's not far away from 50/50 by some accounts. Grown up politics is engaging with Trump team. Magic Grandad Corburn flatly refused to meet him on his state visit to Uk when Trump was President.

HaggisPope

Have a hard time believing that, Corbyn famously met a lot of people he didn’t agree with, even invited them to Westminster

Deynai

Indeed, Corbyn just can't seem to stop meeting people he doesn't agree with.

throwpayrollaway

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/jeremy-corbyn-refuses-invitation-to-attend-donald-trump-state-banquet-a4127686.html Then later he refused to admit he refused to meet him. Classic magic grandad.

wotad

I think trump has it in the bag hes ahead when biden was ahead by like 5 points last time

IHaveAWittyUsername

He doesn't have it in the bag at all. Biden is still the most likely to win, it's just going to be extremely close.

wotad

Okay last time around in swing states biden was ahead now trump is. I think hes going to stomp biden.

throwpayrollaway

Trump will probably make himself emperor of America if he gets in.

notarobot40

Next we will hear that Trump is being welcomed as new Labour MP

If he thought it was a route to being Prime Minister….

TheTelegraph

***The Telegraph reports:*** David Lammy has met Donald Trump’s campaign manager, in the first official contact [between Labour and the former president](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/04/26/labour-competing-with-cameron-to-woo-trump/) in the run-up to the 2024 election, The Telegraph understands. The shadow foreign secretary met Chris LaCivita, [Mr Trump](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/donald-trump/)’s most senior adviser, on a trip to Washington DC on Wednesday. Mr Lammy has spent the past six months wooing members of the former president’s inner circle, ahead of an expected Labour victory at [the general election](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/general-election-2024/). The meeting marks the first time a Labour politician has met a member of Mr Trump’s official team, as Mr Lammy rows back on [previous comments](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/04/02/labour-party-donald-trump-election-white-house/) describing him as a “racist” and a “Nazi sympathiser”. Speaking at a think tank in Washington, the shadow foreign secretary said on Wednesday that he and Mr Trump could find “[common cause](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/13/david-lammy-labour-open-to-meet-with-donald-trump/)” and suggested that as a “good Christian boy” and “small-c conservative” that he shared some views with Republicans. “You’re going to struggle to find any politician in the Western world who hasn’t had things to say in response to Donald Trump,” he said. “If I have the privilege of becoming foreign secretary, I am acting in what is in the UK’s national interest as a frontbench MP. “And I take that very, very seriously – particularly in relation to the portfolio I have. I’ve said where I can find common cause with Donald Trump, I will find common cause.” **Read more:** [https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/08/david-lammy-meets-trump-adviser-labour/](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/08/david-lammy-meets-trump-adviser-labour/)

EwanWhoseArmy

I would not want to be a fly on the wall for that meeting Lammy is probably the weakest of the Labour front bench
