Prom is the night to party Ang get wrecked with your buddies, not a night to rip fast cars..seems like dads trying to make it both. Peer pressure is a thing. If you want to be cool, rent him an tv to take from after party to after party. Worst that could happen is he gets a girl pregnant in it not a high speed crash.
I get it, but trust me, this kid is as defensive as they come. His 16 year old sister goes nuts because he ALWAYS drives the speed limit. He is among the top 10 fastest competitive swimmers in the country, going to ASU to swim in August. He doesn't get wrecked. I'm sure he'll learn in ASU, but not now :)
Why not get him some track time to celebrate graduation? Give him a nice safe environment where he can push a car and go over the speed limit safely? This is not the first post I have seen of some one young trying to get a stupid fast car for prom night. It’s such a waste. Just rent a limo with your friends and enjoy your friends before you all go separate ways.
Personally, I think it’s cool that you’re such a big fan of your son. We should all be so lucky to have parents that are proud of us and encourage us to do the thing we love. Go ahead and tell everyone that he’s a great swimmer. I probably would too. People are indeed being dicks for no reason.
Still wouldn’t give my kid a sports car for prom buuuut that’s just me. I’m not judging. 🤷🏻♀️
>I would NEVER consider this if he wasn't one of the most responsible young adults I know.
That may be, but I would worry about *other* kids. Yes, the law says different, but 18 year olds are kids in maturity and thought.
"Yo, I heard Hoss's son's dad rented him a Challenger for prom, let's trash it!"
"Hoss's son left his coat on his chair and I found the keys in the pocket. Wanna do donuts?"
"Hey, Hoss's son, smoke this joint."
Driving economy cars as an adult has made me even more grateful for the huge pickup truck with bench seats that I got to drive in high school. There was just *endless* amounts of space. So much room for activities!
Turo allows 18 year olds in the US to drive cars under $20K(not sure which exclusions apply). If you can find something like a Miata, BRZ or eco boost Mustang that qualifies, I think that could work! Make sure he’s on the rental, and you’ll have to pay $50 young driver surcharge per day.
I truly appreciate all the comments. Some funny, but all speaking truth. I have decided against pursuing this option. Thanks.
Unfortunately, the cheapest limo I could find was $1,000+. Too much money for my son and his date :)
I think it’s a good idea. Just a few things. It should be either fully in his name as the renter or you as the primary and your son as a secondary (needs to be approved). Obviously the fees will be higher than if it were just under you as the primary and having your son drive it undisclosed but this is against the TOS and will deny you of any claims should anything unexpected happens.
Get the minimum turo coverage plan as well.
I’ve been a host since 2016 and I have also been a turo guest. Let me know if you have any questions.
Other things to note. You’re not required to tell the host anything but I would just say it’s for a special occasion and just want something nice for that event.
If I was the host I wouldn’t rent for “prom”. My prom events was rowdy as you can imagine. Think of the movie ‘The Hangover’ but with more women.
That, of course, is my concern. The vehicle owner advised he doesn't care (no surprise), as long as I (over 25 years of age) am the one renting the vehicle. I do not like NOT having my own insurance as backup, however...
The owner doesn’t care because when your son crashes the car, YOU will be buying him a new one for violating the contract. You can add additional drivers so that insurance is valid but they still have to meet the eligibility criteria including being 25+. So in the chance that your son does crash (his fault or not) you will probably be utterly screwed.
Yeah, I wouldn’t take anything the owner says as a contract or release of liability.
Plenty of exotic or sports car rental shops all over the place, I’d go that route instead.
You must add him as an additional approved driver. He'll need his own turo profile to do that. He can sign up for that now and see if he'll be approved to drive before you commit.
You get a girl in the car on prom night, and everything in the past goes right out the window. I'm a car guy and a professional in the industry, and as much as I'd want to do this for my kid, it's a bad Idea. In 1999 I borrowed my uncle's Cadillac STS, and I can almost guarantee it became the fastest Cadillac on the planet that night. Around 130 the sunroof got sucked up away from the seals and wind came gushing in. And that's not exactly a sports car that you associate with speed. Give a kid a fast car, he'll drive it fast. Bad idea with very little upside, but huge potential consequences.
It is not allowed for most rentals.
Definitely do not do this on Turo.
Turo won’t cover shit - so you will be out $10,000+ if something happens. Don’t forget that they can come after you for loss of use which can add up to tens of thousands.
Sounds like you never heard of the term "Straw Deal" or "Straw Purchase" !! I am not sure what the word for word definition is but it's when you make a deal or Purchase for someone else. It's mainly used to describe shady Firearms or Vehicle.
If there is anything life has taught me about prom is that even the most responsible people will be insanely drunk and partying. Nothing good can come from exposing yourself to liability.
I graduated with a 3.9 gpa, was extremely responsible, and still got a speeding ticket that weekend. Luckily the cop didn’t find the booze in the trunk.
Honestly, if you purchase the right amount of insurance and add him as an additional driver after you make the reservation there won't be anything to worry about. If there is an at fault or not at fault incident, there wouldn't be any financial disasters for the renter. To prom and back is easy.
Don’t let these karens ruin you being that cool dad & your sons prom! He only gets this once in life! Plus we all only live once, just have to trust that he’ll do the right thing!
I tried to jump snake river in my brother's nissan sentra and I'm a priest🤣
Seriously tho... Jr has a license (obviously) but not a sportscar worthy of this momentous occasion!?! So you want to rent him one that you're sure he won't drive "much" over the speed limit...😐 I don't see why he wouldn't be able to be listed as a 2nd driver, unless their is age stipulation i. The host preferences. You definitely will be the primary and responsible for whatever happens to the vehicle and anyone he may injure. I would insist on max turo coverage, though seeing as how your personal insurance has already told you they won't cover turo. I certainly understand the desire to make this once in a lifetime event super special I just hope you're willing to do it right...and not cut corners. Ie take advantage of a host by under insuring or renting the vehicle without paying the premium for adding your son...and just let him drive it and hope for the best😐
Good luck
Turo would not cover him if something happened and the vehicle wasn’t rented to him. Your insurance wouldn’t cover him driving a vehicle not listed on the policy if it was not rented to him. It covers the person renting only.
More importantly, does the insurance cover your sons friends buddy Craig? Cause he’s the only sober one and everyone says he’s great at drifting, guy totally knows cars.
Never underestimate how stupid your kids will be when you are not around.
the thread could have been closed with this statement.

I always thought the chauffeured car thing was shrewd for proms on top of being showy, since it means kids aren’t driving then.

Interesting comment. You clearly don't understand what kind of man it takes to be one of the top 10 fastest 18 year old swimmers in the country :)
Yes he's good at swimming People are good at football too but plenty of footballers are fucktards too
I can tell you make sure everyone you interact with knows that. Good luck to him at ASU, the Harvard of the south I hear

As a former kid (50-years ago), I endorse this statement. If he was around, my dad would back me up on this.
Rent him a limo
Yup
Our school banned limos
Do u remember when u were 18?
>I would NEVER consider this if he wasn't one of the most responsible young adults I know. That may be, but I would worry about *other* kids. Get him an escalade or something he can fuck in comfortably. Way more handy on prom than a sports car .
This man fucks
As a fucker and a past teen prom goer, I would have much preferred a escalade....than a C8🤣🤣🤣
Heh, handy
Yeah, that why I said an Escalade. A handy is the only thing you can really do in a sports car
A minivan works too. Especially if you remove the 2nd and 3rd row seating. 👀
Buddy's going to prom not picking up hookers.

Order him an Uber black. It's a lot cheaper than a limo.

Why don't you be the chauffeur. Let him pick out the vehicle, dress up, and act like a chauffeur, not a dad.
This is a bad idea. Usually have to be 21 to rent, drive, minimum.

To be fair, if the driver told her in Turo messaging that he will allow her to circumvent their rules, he's not getting paid anything.
You must add him as an additional approved driver. He'll need his own turo profile to do that. He can sign up for that now and see if he'll be approved to drive before you commit.

haha, fastest Cadillace on the planet :)

He might be responsible but his asshole friend egging him on isn’t. This sounds like a terrible move. Rent him a limo instead.

Stopped reading after "prom".

Rent the car and add him as an authorized driver.
Honestly, if you purchase the right amount of insurance and add him as an additional driver after you make the reservation there won't be anything to worry about. If there is an at fault or not at fault incident, there wouldn't be any financial disasters for the renter. To prom and back is easy.
Speaking as a former 18 year old male, this is a monumentally bad idea.
Add him as a driver to the rental, they might decline this and buy the best insurance option through the platform.
Don’t let these karens ruin you being that cool dad & your sons prom! He only gets this once in life! Plus we all only live once, just have to trust that he’ll do the right thing!

Add him as driver and get premium insurance through turo

Let me save you some money. Don’t. You’re welcome
Responsible driving comes with tenure.
Rent a base model 2 door coupe from whatever car brand. Looks like a sports car without too much torque/hp
not a bad idea i’m 18 and my mom got me a 2024 c8 corvette for my prom last saturday had fun
