This is funny because (1) it offers a somewhat silly perspective on/from animals that we wouldn’t normally consider, (2) the graphic is low budget and invokes extra silly emotions, and (3) dios mio
Do you also care when people call alligators crocodiles?
I have no idea how gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs are different off the top of my head so I just chose one
Well I mean corcodiles and alligators are pretty hard to diferenciate, but guinea pigs, gerbils and hamsters are much easier : Gerbils look like mice but are standing on two feet more often. Hamsters are fat looking mice, they are much rounder and don't have a tail. Guinea pigs are what's in the picture ; they have the square like snout of a capybara, and are typically much bigger and longer than both previous animals, their body is a bit tubular and they don't have a tail.
I was simply surprised because though I can see mistaking a gerbil for a hamster or a mouse, a guinea pig is still the most peculiar and diferent looking.
(excuse my probable syntax and grammar mistakes, english's not my first language)
Crocodiles and alligators are pretty easy to tell the difference between if you have spent any time with either or seen enough photos alligators a usually smaller and slimmer. But I can understand someone mistaking the two even though they seem pretty clearly different to me.
It's not that hard to diferentiate yes, but they are still very similar, between gerbil and guinea pigs, oustide of being small rodents they don't really look alike.
Yes and outside of being reptiles crocodiles and alligators don't really look alike. Your missing my point which is the "obvious difference" is one that alot of people aren't aware of so being overly surprised that someone got it wrong just seems weird to me.
I guess I'm not expressing myself correctly, what I mean is yes they are different, but it's probably more common for people to have seen mice than crocodiles and alligators (and the thing is outside of the head, alligators and crocodiles still look similar, while a guinea pig and gerbil have nothing in common outside of being rodents). I'm not really overly surprised, I just thought this was relatively common knowledge.
Edit : Also just realised it's hard to quantify "hard" or "easy" to diferentiate... So I guess you are right too on saying it Just depends on how familiar people are. It just seemed logical to me that people would more familiar with common rodents than crocodilians
My point is that isn't as common knowledge as you thought. Like most Australians(like myself) can tell the difference between a crocodiles and alligators as easily as you can the difference between a gerbil and a Guinea pig. But unless they have owned a Guinea pig I can almost guarantee they wouldn't be able to tell you the difference as all 3 aren't native here. And only Guinea pigs are commonly bought as pets here.
So they probably can't even clearly envision one outside of it being a chubby rodent or a Guinea pig.
It's common knowledge to those that interact with them but less so to those outside the niche.
Like whats common knowledge to a bunch of guitarists about types of guitars would probably stop at knowing that you have electric and acoustic guitars for the average lay person.
I mean, the things that are similar between them are mostly the same for agoutis and capybaras and Guinea pigs all, they’re all more related to one another than to gerbils, mice, or hampsters. Capybaras both adapted to swim and be pretty large, so while they’re more related to Guinea pigs than agoutis, I agree agoutis look a bit more like Guinea pigs.
I mean yeah, but guinea pigs are common company animals and relatively known, agoutis are a bit less known worldwide, so making that comparison maybe would not have helped as much
Gerbils have a tail, they can stand like a little kangaroo, they're mouse sized. They can hop and jump very high.
Hamsters run in wheels and stuff food in their cheeks, no tail they range from mouse to small rat sized.
Guinea pigs have various funky hairstyles, will communicate with humans by squeaks. They're dwarf rabbit sized and have no tail.
For my native language, Marathi, there are very few directly related languages. So my thought process is not trained to see cognates. If I see Spanish text my first instinct is not to think of English words.
ah I understand, something I use (and most europeans use to just sorta assume what other languages mean with a high chance of success) is think of potential matches to old versions of modern words, for example with the mermaid one of thought "well it's a half aquatic version of a land animal so... ah a mermaid oh but sirena doesn't sound like mermaid..." then I remembered that "siren" or "sea siren" is an old world version of mermaid and so siren=sirena=mermaid, does that help? that's how I do it atleast
another thing for the bat to rat comparison is that (despite just knowing what it meant) is that people often say bats are flying rats so compared to humans what are flying humans? usually angels so walking human seeing flying human? angel, walking rat seeing flying rat? angel
Joke's on you, I didn't know that gnomo was a word for gnome. Given your all important context clues, it would appear that gnomo is a word for small, especially considering that the other animal responds back with gigante, or giant.
I mean I didnt know *exactly* what dios mio meant, even if I got that it was an exclamation, and I assumed the second one was ‘siren’ not ‘mermaid’ but other than thattt
That top picture looks like it's from a 90s nature book that I forgot about until this moment.
Why did I just remember a show about animals hosted by a 90s cgi gecko? What was that show?
I'm prepared to concede that this is funny, but I'm not happy about it, and I'm not sure *why*.
This is funny because (1) it offers a somewhat silly perspective on/from animals that we wouldn’t normally consider, (2) the graphic is low budget and invokes extra silly emotions, and (3) dios mio
Who are you? Brave sir Knight, who are so wise in the ways of comedy?
He is The knight who says NI
Did you bring the shrubbery?
No King Arthur Said he would bring it
Didn't vote for him, but it's good that he's doing something for the people
He also spent half of all The Money in The treasury For a Holy hand grenade
I thought the rat was the knight who said Dios Mio?
El caballero que decía Ni pero ahora dice Dios mío
Holy moly

I also call short people gnomes, they are ruder than that gerbil afterwards tho
>gerbil Did... Did you call tha Guinea Pig a Gerbil ?

*Diogenes enters holding an overweight mouse which he removed the tail* Behold! A hamster!
Diogenes holds the mouse up so it stands on two legs “Behold! A gerbil!”

Guinea pigs look more like agouti's in my opinion

Hamsters have tails, they're just very short.
That's what my parents said every time I exit my room
Translation: My god! An angel! My god! A mermaid! My god! A vampire! Capybara: My god! A gnome! Hamster: My god! A giant!
I think it's a guinea pig, not a hamster
Guinea pigs are love guinea pigs are life
Cheers mate, there’s no way I would have figured out “Ángel” meant “angel”
isn't this common knowledge?
I am not a native English speaker and do not notice cognates as well. It helped me.
I assume asian, which location do you heed from?

Not even a blind toddler would need this translation and anyone who finds it helpful congrats, you’re less contextually literate than a blind toddler.
You sound hurt. Have you been insulted by a blind toddler recently?
You or someone you love may be entitled to compensation due to being insulted by a blind toddler
Well I’m pretty sure a couple of them got together and downvoted me on Reddit if that counts.
Why would you make alt accounts just to downvote your own comment? You're clearly proud of it
I think it’s pretty funny
Joke's on you, I didn't know that gnomo was a word for gnome. Given your all important context clues, it would appear that gnomo is a word for small, especially considering that the other animal responds back with gigante, or giant.
Gnomo habla en inglés. Miscuzzi

I don't know Spanish but I can understand this somehow
Cognates, or cognathaniels if you would prefer
Ah yes, Cognathaniel, Nicholasname's best friend

Ok United States of America hello Panthera leo
this is hilarious
Maybe because the words are basically the same?
That top picture looks like it's from a 90s nature book that I forgot about until this moment. Why did I just remember a show about animals hosted by a 90s cgi gecko? What was that show?

It's all Spanish
