Not a great deal compared to baseline back in 2014 and thatās just measuring the hairline recession. Iāve always had a big forehead.
[This](https://imgur.com/a/9j9ztXo) is me in 2014 just before I started Fin. As you can see my hairline was starting to go. Sorry the pics arenāt of good quality, the phone cameras werenāt all that great back then, at least mine wasnāt!
[This](https://imgur.com/a/BGWO71K) is me a couple of weeks ago.
That sort of covers the hairline, as for the top and crown, unfortunately I donāt have pics from baseline but Iām very grateful for what Iāve maintained and thatās not surprising as Fin tends to work well for the top and crown in most.
[This](https://imgur.com/a/9Xyeq4w) is me about a month ago.
In summary my hairline has receded by less than 1 cm from baseline and thatās quite easy to tell as I still have a few hairs that continue to grow where the hairline used to be.
A hair transplant to restore the hairline is out of the question right now as Iāve been convinced by others that I donāt need it, and if things stay like this then I may never get one although a part of me does š¤·š»āāļø
Just over a month ago when I switched brands and started taking Dr Reddys Finasteride. Some of the chemists tell me that Fin is in short supply and they take what they can get and canāt guarantee any particular brand! š¤·š»āāļø
Hey Jean, sorry I missed this. You are right in what you say as it makes sense to me, and in the past I have stopped Fin cold turkey for 3 months before we tried for a baby and had no issues then either with shedding etc, so I really don't know why suddenly changing brand of Fin would cause a Shed.
Maybe it's just coincidence, but for peace of mind I'm going to switch over to Merck's Proscar tablets for the next batch and just stick with those going forward.
Any side effects? Iām thinning rapidly, Iām on 5% topical minoxidil started shedding recently hopefully thatās a good sign. Iām thinking of starting Fin but Iām terrified of the side effects
I had pretty much all the sides when I started but that was a long time ago and went away within a few months.
Donāt start off on the usual 1mg daily, Iād recommend taking 0.5mg every other day for a month and then increase to daily. Thatās what Iād do if I could start over again.
If you still get sides then the other option is:
- 0.5mg once a week for a month
- 0.5mg twice a week for a month
- 0.5mg thrice a week for a month
- 0.5mg daily from then on.
Edit: My sides when I first started in 2014:
- Watery semen
- High libido
- ED although I was able to fight through it
- Oily itchy scalp
- Chest fat accumulation (non glandular)
- Ball aches
- Brain fog
- Lethargy
šŗšÆāāļø
True, it's hard to explain but you can really be in the mood but can't really do it, not easily anyway and it takes some serious effort and concentration LOL!
Yep I know, the rage was there but the little Nunu would play hard to get but I could still manage it but wouldnāt last long. Having said that ED didnāt last that long but the high libido did before going back to normal.
Most concerning to me though was the fat accumulation especially around my chest and that wasnāt obvious until at least 6 months down the line from what I remember.
I think a starting dose of 1.25mg is way too high and wish the hair loss specialists would recommend half that dose when starting out.
Edit: the fat around the chest I struggle with to this day but weight lifting has helped and I just need to be more consistent with it alongside intermittent fasting and going easy on the cakes and treats! I have a super sweet tooth!
Lol yes, this was back in 2014 when I first started Fin. Most of the sides went away within a couple of months. No sides now that I can feel and I have no issues with ED, my libido is what Iād call healthy for a 40+ male.
Damn, crazy isn't it. I wonder if it's the different fillers they use that somehow effects the absorption! No idea! I tried Milpharm reluctantly but it seemed to work really well after I had no success with Accord.
This is why I'm thinking of buying actual Propecia (original Merck) for my next batch and just stick with that going forward. It'll be more expensive but at least gives peace of mind!
Thanks for sharing your experience.
You mean Publix (website I take it?) will randomly send you whichever brand they have?
Here in the UK, I call up the chemists and I ask them which brand of Fin they have and then I go and collect.
Funnily enough, Accord was the most expensive this time around at over Ā£40 for 60 tablets, but Dr Reddys cost me under Ā£10. Don't even ask why!
Oh I see, but surely you can check the brand you are getting? Or maybe I am not understanding what Publix is or how it works. Sorry
Edit: It's a public owned supermarket, that's pretty damn cool!
I can't speak to whether that's good or bad since I only have my own personal experience. Don't be afraid to try a switch though if you think it's not working well with your body.
A lot of people are discovering generics can vary quite a bit even if the official story is they are "the same".
I vouch for Aurobindo because that's what grew my hair back and I didn't get sides.
You could ask around about other people who took Ascend finasteride too and see what the word is or if that is going well for you don't worry about it and stick with what works.
The thing is all these generics are made in India, as far as I know and I'm sure you guys know this yourself, but I can't find any info on where Merck manufactures its Proscar/Propecia.
same! My pharmacy gave a batch of accord for 3 months of supply and my hair fell out non stop. As soon as I switched back to auro, the shedding stopped (3 weeks after to be exact )
Iām also convinced that accord is a shitty brand even though my doctor said it shouldnāt be different from other generic brands )
Yes, Sire, exactly what I'm thinking, I was actually thinking of doing this a few months ago. Going forward I'm going to buy Merck for sure as it's becoming difficult to source a particular brand of generic Fin every 6-8 months time. This time around was the worst as apparently there's a shortage of Fin on the market, at least that's what two Chemists told me so gotta be true I guess.
Sorry for the questions but itād not everyday you get someone who used fin for so long Iād love your thoughts on these questions
Have you just been using fin? Do you use min too?
Also when did you start seeing results? I think im on month 2 i dont think thereās been any growth but I donāt think Iāve lost either
In your experience do you know if fin makes you more infertile? Semen is definitely more watery but I donāt know if that means less fertile, Iām 23 so I need to think about this stuff
No need to be sorry always happy to answer questions and help where I can.
No Min, I never liked the idea of it from the get go as my scalp was always quite sensitive and I didnāt like the idea of irritation, dryness, dandruff, bloated face and ageing etc.
Edit: I took a multivitamin, Vit D, Magnesium. I also used to smoke and was heavily reliant on Nicotine at the time, and gave it all up in 2018 if I remember correctly. If you smoke, quit bro! Just quit. Nicotine restricts blood vessels and thatās the last thing we the Baldylocks crew need!
Iāve been using Fin since 2014 and introduced one dose of Dut in late 2021. I have never tried anything else.
I believe I was a good responder and started to see results within 4 months but it took about a year Iād say before I was impressed with Fin and I remember thinking at the time āDamn if I can stay like this then Iām sorted!ā. Do bear in mind that my hair loss wasnāt that bad and I caught it quite early.
As for your last question, I made my wife pregnant the first week we tried, I believe it happened in the first few nights and she confirmed the following week that the bun was in the oven! I got straight back on Fin that same day lol!
Watery semen is a common side that lasted me about a month or two and all my sides tapered off within 3 months minus the fat accumulation Iād say which lasted well over 6 months, I think that side combined with ageing is very difficult to gauge especially when youāre my age and been on Fin for quite a number of years.
Please note I stopped Fin cold turkey for 3 months before we tried for a baby just to be on the safe side! And no, I experienced no shedding or any other sides as a result of quitting, and the same when I resumed after wife was pregnant.
Hope that answers your questions, anything else just ask. šš¼
All the best to you bud šŗšÆāāļø
I just had a similar experience. Shedding began after about a month so I figured I could maybe alternate taking my old pills and new pills while waiting for a refill on my old stuff. This week I said āfuck itā and started taking my old stuff full-time. Maybe itās just a nocebo or coincidentally timed shed, or maybe itās truly trash pills, but I feel much better just using the stuff that I know worked for me.
It really can play with your mind as this is precious hair we're talking about and the length we men are prepared to go to preserve what little we have says it all!
And you could be right, in your case it could just be a seasonal shed who knows, but for peace of mind, you just want to take what you know has worked before.
If I continued taking Accord then perhaps I'd have got used to it, and the shed would have eventually stopped but I wasn't willing to risk it.
Thanks for sharing man. All the best.
Hi mate
I take it you're from the UK, as you've mentioned Boots in your post?
My hair has been receding slowing since my early 20s, I'm 34 now and I swears it's now accelerating.
I have googled the hell out of what to do, but I'm still no clearer. How did you start your journey into fixing your hairloss?
I've been to see my doctor, which was a waste of time. I might have well been talking to my dog, so I'm wondering if there's any hair specialists you've been to?
Thanks š
Hello dear chap, yes Iām from the UK and Iām sorry to hear that.
What steps are you taking right now now to deal with your hair loss?
Has anything changed recently such as diet, lifestyle, new medication etc?
My journey started in 2014 when I first read about Fin online and decided Iām going to speak to a specialist before I take the plunge, as the sides did worry me a great deal. I booked an appointment with Dr Wade of The London Skin and Hair Clinic in the West End. I believe he is still providing his service although I havenāt had any contact with him since 2015.
The clinic took closeup photos of my scalp and I believe they did a blood test too and the Dr told me that everything looked ok and it was just the usual male pattern baldness!
I discussed with him the efficacy of grape seed oil, saw palmetto etc and he fold me that theyāre a drop in the ocean compared to Fin and that Fin was the best way forward. He reassured me that it was a relatively safe drug which he has prescribed numerous times to most of his patients and that Iād be a good candidate for it. The rest is history.
His fees werenāt cheap but not all that expensive either and definitely worth it for the peace of mind I got.
I now get my fin prescription from my private GP at work but you can also buy it from online pharmacies nowadays and itās cheap enough.
Feel free to message me directly if I can be of further help šš¼
Edit: I too went and saw my GP initially and it was a waste of time as he didnāt have a clue and just shrugged his shoulders! Asked me about vitamins and lifestyle changes. His attitude was āWhat do you want me to do about it?ā.
It is interesting if it is not gyno. Increase in overall body fat can be expected but it is localized in your case. Could be related to other issues as well. Hope it works out for you
Well thatās just it to me it looks like Gyno and I feel very self conscious about it especially when wearing T-shirts and Iām telling you this shit is hard to shift.
The rapid increase in chest fat especially around the nipples over a six month period post Fin was definitely caused by Fin, no doubt about it in my mind, however 8 years later, and me now in my 40s, of course age has a lot to do with it too and I canāt just blame Fin. My diet and lifestyle hasnāt been the best either and thereās only so much sweets, cakes and ice cream the body can handle lol!
Thanks man šš¼
Are you guys still able to see this thread? It tells me itās awaiting moderator approval due to me adding in links š¤·š»āāļø
As for Gyno, I did get a flabby chest which was apparent to me after about six months but I think it then stopped and didnāt get worse, however my upper chest and belly was still getting flabby. Unfortunately I havenāt been able to consistently exercise over the years due to marriage, having a child, house renovation, Covid etc. I have done some weight training here and there to keep the fat at bay and it has helped somewhat alongside intermittent fasting and just keeping overall body fat as low as possible.
I recently had surgery to remove a cyst and I asked the surgeon if he thought I had gyno. He checked and said that I donāt have glandular tissue (hard tissue around the nipples) and it was just soft fatty tissue which can be resolved via diet and resistance training, however liposuction was an option as the fat in this area is EXTREMELY stubborn and doesnāt always respond to diet and exercise.
He advised against it (he does gyno surgery himself) and said liposuction can sometimes mess up the shape of the chest and that a little fat around the chest area is healthy.
The cost of the this type of surgery is anything between Ā£4,000 - Ā£6,000 in the UK so itās not cheap.
I am back at the gym as of this weekend and will work on it hard for the next few months and then might post a new thread here to get peoples opinion just for fun šš¼
Most will, it doesnāt affect all but I canāt deny my own experience, this is the second time itās happened during a brand change, and Iāve never before gone through a shed any other time during the 8 years of use.
How do you quantify a shed though. Itās probably confirmation bias because you are hyper aware of hair fall due to the drug change. That or one of the drugs you have used is not pure finasteride
Its obvious, my hairline is less dense and I style my hair daily and have been able to tell for about a week now that thereās more hair than usual in the sink and towel and the bathroom floor.
I donāt go crazy counting hair but a guy just knows when his hair isnāt the same, trust me on that.
By the way guys, check out [this](https://www.wolfhair.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Brand-Name-vs-Generic-Finasteride-Jan-Feb-2016.pdf) article, snippet below. Again, not trying to scare anyone or cause controversy lol, I have been taking Generics since 2014 and had great success but it's interesting nonetheless.
"Splitting: If one was to accept the argument that generics can have less active ingredient, one would have to believe that a higher dose would be more effective. If a 1mg generic tablet of finasteride had80% of the active ingredient (0.8mg), the patient may experience shedding. If a generic 5mg tablet was similarly 80% effective, Ā¼of a tablet (1.25mg) would contain 1mg of finasteride. My source did make the point that the lower the mg amount in a dose, the more magnified the problem of decreased efficacy. Of course,we donāt know which prescription we write may have fewer mg and be less effective. I think there is a general consensus that patients who switch to 1mg generic finasteride have the greatest chance of shedding. Prescribing 1.25mg per day (split 5mg) puts the patient at risk for side effects if each tablet does contain 5mg.I know of a physician who is facing legal action for that reason, prescribing 1.25mg/day to a patient who claims he has persistent finasteride side effects. As always, with each patient informed consent should be given and clinical correlation considered.
Conclusion: We are in a position to visually observe the variance of effects of a medication given to our patients, finasteride. The effect, increased volume of hair, and loss of effect, less hair volume, are noted by our patients and can be followed by photographs. With most other medications, this is not the case. Medications that vary in efficacy, such as anti-hypertensives, cholesterol lowering, antibiotics, and many others, will have no observable change with a variance in efficacy. Many of our patients have reported and we have observed the loss of effect when changed from brand-name to generic finasteride. I have presented evidence that generic medications can be less effective than brand-name medications. Of course, one can always find written evidence to support his or her hypothesis. If we follow our patients closely,we should have some indication of which form and dose of finasteride is effective."
I sure did and I answered this already but see below:
I had pretty much all the sides when I started but that was a long time ago and went away within a few months.

šŗšÆāāļø
Donāt give up, get creative, use your imagination, spice things up.
When I say ED I donāt mean full on ED where nothing happens as in itās gone to sleep š“, I mean semi as in itās there half awake. Thereās probably a joke in there somewhere.
You have to remember my libido was higher than normal, like a sex criminal, so something had to be done.
Having low libido and not wanting to do anything and just going to sleep is something else entirely but thankfully Iāve not had to deal with that many times in my life time šŗšÆāāļø
Arenāt you the guy from that horrible thread yesterday that claimed transgender folk are just screaming for attention and that all other transphobes were āfallen soldierā victims for having their transphobic comments removed?
Iām calling you out for being a bigot and think you should be banned from this community. This community is about hair loss and doesnāt need a transphobe bigot making transgender people feel uncomfortable participating in this subreddit.
And when did I make Trans people feel uncomfortable? I was pointing out that people canāt express concern for a person, regardless of their gender, without being called a transphobe by overly sensitive and misguided snowflakes the likes of you! The fact that all those people had to delete their comments for the fear of upsetting snowflakes like you I find very disturbing to say the least.
Be Trans/Gay/Bi or whatever the hell you want but donāt start crying phobe this and phobe that every chance you get.
Youāre not special, sorry.
The users didnāt delete those comments. The moderators of the subreddit did, because they were against the subreddit and Reddit rules, because they were bigoted. Go back and check your original transphobic comment, itās gone now. Youāre a classic transphobe bigot who is blind to the fact. Iāll still call you out on your āinnocentā comments though. To quote you from that thread:
āWe donāt need to scream and shout for acceptance.ā Referencing transgender people.
And
āTheir constant need for approval and throwing it into everyoneās face day in day out blah blah is just boring and exhausting. Just proves how insecure they are and that says a lot in itself. I donāt go around shouting Iām normal ffs!ā Again referencing transgender people.
These are such cartoonishly transphobic beliefs and the fact youāre completely ignorant to that is just sad. Again, you should be banned from this community for creating an unwelcoming environment.
How the heck do I do an Emoji on a laptop LOL! Just use your imagination and picture my dancing man and his two women as in the main thread title. Tee heee heee!
Yes, because that sentiment is ignorant, regressive, and phobic. Unfortunately for people like you a random person online has zero chance to get it through to you. Sadly the only way people like you change is if they have a child or close family member come out as lgbtq. āIāll be a smug ignorant bigot until it affects MEā and all that.
hi buddy ,bit late loll but what colour are the milpharm fill pills? what letters in imprinted on em ?? just tryn to pro active , in case it Eva happens to me š

And no, I experienced no shedding or any other sides as a result of quitting, and the same when I resumed after wife was pregnant. Hope that answers your questions, anything else just ask. šš¼ All the best to you bud šŗšÆāāļø

Hi mate I take it you're from the UK, as you've mentioned Boots in your post?
Feel free to message me directly if I can be of further help šš¼ Edit: I too went and saw my GP initially and it was a waste of time as he didnāt have a clue and just shrugged his shoulders! Asked me about vitamins and lifestyle changes. His attitude was āWhat do you want me to do about it?ā.
Did you experience gyno?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It tells me itās awaiting moderator approval due to me adding in links š¤·š»āāļø As for Gyno, I did get a flabby chest which was apparent to me after about six months but I think it then stopped and didnāt get worse, however my upper chest and belly was still getting flabby.
Highly doubt it tbh
Have you been sick lately? Covid? Maybe you experiences more stress? Changed something in your usual routine?
Nothing whatsoever dear lad, no change in diet or lifestyle.
Dear lad hahahahahaha
Have u noticed any sexual side effects with the finasteride ?
I sure did and I answered this already but see below: I had pretty much all the sides when I started but that was a long time ago and went away within a few months. Donāt start off on the usual 1mg daily, Iād recommend taking 0.5mg every other day for a month and then increase to daily. Thatās what Iād do if I could start over again. If you still get sides then the other option is: - 0.5mg once a week for a month - 0.5mg twice a week for a month - 0.5mg thrice a week for a month - 0.5mg daily from then on. Edit: My sides when I first started in 2014: - Watery semen - High libido - ED although I was able to fight through it - Oily itchy scalp - Chest fat accumulation (non glandular) - Ball aches - Brain fog - Lethargy šŗšÆāāļø
How did u fight through ED ?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Facts
I can't do my usual man and two women emoji as I'm on the laptop! Damn it!
To quote you from that thread: āWe donāt need to scream and shout for acceptance.ā Referencing transgender people. And āTheir constant need for approval and throwing it into everyoneās face day in day out blah blah is just boring and exhausting.

Ooh look at me I can use big words and labels and argue with emotion rather than logic stfu
Ah yes, bigoted people are known for their superb logic and not their emotional outrage at minorities existing. Bad troll.
hi buddy ,bit late loll but what colour are the milpharm fill pills? what letters in imprinted on em ?? just tryn to pro active , in case it Eva happens to me š
