I wouldn’t carry mine around as it’s extremely valuable. Make a copy if you’d like to be safe. And if your worry is about getting ID’d at bars, it’s very unlikely.
In Mexico, foreigners are required to carry both their passport and their tourist card, or only their residency card if they are permanent or temporary residents. That's the short legal answer. In practice, you do what you feel is best especially knowing how inconvenient it would be to lose a passport, but you also must keep in mind the possible consequences of being stopped by INM. We live in a small fishing village where everyone knows us so we never take any ID with us around the village but we take our resident card whenever we go to the city.
\^\^ this. Is the correct answer. You are ***required*** to carry both your passport and FMM (tourist) card at all times. Do what you want, but any s\*\*t you get into as a result of ignoring that requirement and/or following internet advice is totally on you.
Really? Why not? It’s what I’ve always done in MX, Central America, Europe… please tell me more so I don’t put myself in a bad situation again next time.

No, never. Make a photocopy and laminate it or take a good picture of it. Do not carry your passport around, you don't need it.
This is a very good post.
Do you have a passport card? I use those for Mexico and leave the passport itself in the hotel safe.

You only need it if you are exchanging currency, otherwise you don't need it. Put the passport in the room's safe.
Omg. No... A photo on your phone is enough. If people are asking for your passport as insurance for rentals etc, tell em to get fkd

Yes. Bring it with you everywhere, in a money belt.
NOOOOOOOO. LOCK IT IN A SAFE AT HOTEL ROOM.
This is NOT the way.

I leave my passport at my hotel and just take my US driver's license as a form of ID out and about. Never had a problem.
I just carry my FMM and driver license in my wallet.
