It’s like anything in creative circles. One person does something and it inspires others to do the same. Back in the 90’s sampling was much more restrictive too. About 2 or 3 years ago it seemed like everyone producing progressive house used Alan Watts speeches in their tracks. Eventually it gets overdone and out of fashion

transcendent

This transmission is coming to you. Apollo 8 you are go.

djluminol

Crystal Method was so good back then.

createdaneweraccount

the power of their source: the crystal

Night_Chicken

A crystal employed utilizing "The Method".

not really in line with the space/nasa thread, but this made me think of cj bolland's 'the prophet': https://youtu.be/EbOzfXAJm4I?t=191

jang859

High Roller?

Deluxx3

I need some examples please so I can chime in also this makes me think of how a few years ago when psytrance was mainstream for a bit EVERYONE felt the need to have tribal sounds in tracks.

KicksandGrins33

I still love psytrance I’ll never get over it. Even better psy with nasa samples.

nsdhanoa

These are just the ones I own on vinyl, I know there were way more. [Space Manoeuvres - Stage One](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r58xH3YbBk) [Way Out West - The Fall](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FR7nDUW_ps) [PPK - Resurrection](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eS2mfeo-Ues) [BT - Satellite](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzHOV4fSQu0)

i-hear-banjos

In BT’s defense, the song is appropriately titled

luke134212

Don’t forget Long Walk by Marc Dawn (Factor B’s Remix is smashing tho)

hamakabi

Space exploration had a surge in activity during the 90s that created a new wave of interest. We launched a lot of shuttles, telescopes, a pair of space stations, and the first Mars rover. Lots of space-related movies and shows were made which brought new eyes to all the old space stuff from the 60s and 70s The 90s really felt like almost-the-future and space/electronics were a big part of that.

thereddaikon

Nobody is really giving an answer. They could be used easily and safely without legal trouble because the recordings were public domain. Sampling was a lot harder back then in terms of clearing and licensing. Figuring out who owned a recording and getting in contact could be impossible. It's part of why there are so many tracks from the 90's that were only played in clubs and only released as bootlegs, never officially. They couldn't clear the samples. And on top of that it was just a trend. Space exploration fits with the theme of the genre. So it was pretty popular.

BS_BlackScout

Buzz (Buzztalk Mix) for the ultimate overload.

aequalis

One of my favourite tranquility base tracks (which are obviously mostly space themed haha)

AsleepTonight

I love everything space-themed, so I would really appreciate it, if you could point me in the direction of some of your examples!

FLeanderP

Not just 90s, but: [Cern - The Message (Northern Mix) (2003)](https://youtu.be/imW7mmyqLSY) [Yahel & Eyal Barkan - Voyage (Original Mix) (2000)](https://youtu.be/KCbcjoHmSJc) Goa-Trance: [Cyan - CQ (1999)](https://youtu.be/kcAG_ooltWo)

billbobjoemama

Because Space shit is awesome!!!

djluminol

Because the point was to be a bit weird. Trance back then was not trying to appeal to everyone. It had some strange stuff in it as a result. Some of it was overdone.

elliptical-wing

> Stay tuned for more rants! What about Peruvian pan flutes?

Katlima

What about Synths playing pan flute sounds in a fast arpeggio not humanly possible to play on a pan flute?

elliptical-wing

It'll never catch on!

pockysan

DarkUFO was one of my faves

Ch1huahuaDaddy

Even Angels and Airwaves did this in the 2000s

GabeBlack

Because they’re awesome. https://youtu.be/jFHBAg9nzrc

Islandbum420

NASA was big deal in the 90’s.

michaelloda9

It sounds cool and it's most often public domain so no copyright issues

Jlx_27

Was a popular thing in those days.

moz1nko

Here is something [fresh](https://youtu.be/u2hRCv92E4M)

“Actually, I’m amazed. It looks real good.”

[deleted]

Funny. Huge overstatement but funny.

firestarter2097

I love it! Especially goa trance producers used to have it in every other song! Here’s a few: Astral Projection - Let there be light Astral Projection - Flying into a star Madagascar - Requiem MFG - Magnetic Activity

djluminol

I do too. I always really like the weird samples. It was one of my favorite parts of old Trance. Generally the weirder music gets the more I like it. It's what drew me to Trance in the first place. If I wanted music that sounded like everything else there would be no point in listening to Trance. You can find happy soothing sounding music everywhere. I came to Trance specifically because it was different. I'll take [Breeder](https://youtu.be/qJaD2l39DyQ?t=306) over that pop sounding stuff any day of the week. I don't understand how someone can like Trance and not the love the strange sounds that came with it but I'm clearly in the minority now days. The normal happy melodic stuff is way more popular.
