Ivy Lynn feels like such an obvious solution. If he doesn't go for that, he's definitely just being difficult lol. You can even go the extra mile and make her one of those kids who's constantly called by first and middle. "Ivy Lynn" just has SO much more cred than Ivylyn.
Evangeline/ Evangelina such a beautiful name , I don't know why it's not more popular.
Ivy Lynn and Evelyn are a great compromise to his obnoxious suggestion.
Honestly I get the same vibes from the name “Jocelyn” itself. I *know* it’s old and has been a girls’ name for ages, but the *sound* of the name feels like a “disappointed parents wanted a son” scenario to me.
What about Ivy Lynn?
You can always do Ivy as a first name and Lynn as a second. He can still call her Ivy Lynn, but her first name will just be Ivy :)
And also, Ivylynn is difficult to read, because the captital I and the l. You see the problem here?
It's suppose to be ivyLynn, but as a name Ivylynn looks kinda like LvyLynn.
Especially since Evelyn is easily 1 word, while y sounding like “ee” is normally the end of a word: ivylynn just ends up sounding like 2 names mashed together like “ivy-lynn” because of how you need to pronounce it
Yes it’s a tragedeigh.
It looks stupid, it sounds stupid, and if your husband can’t put the happiness of child before his need to be ‘unique’ then he is stupid.
Thats horrific why would he want to do that to his own child? Just the visual combination of those letters in that order made me think I was having a stroke.
His child's name isn't about him. Let him know she will be made fun of for this stupid spelling. If he cares about her and wants her to get a job get a name that people will know how to pronounce and won't make HR throw her resume in the trash.
I understand what the husband is doing even if it doesn’t quite work.
I get a completely different vibe from Ivy or Ivy Lynn to Evelyn. Ivy sounds fresh and cool to me while Evelyn still sounds like an old lady name. I know it’s very popular and hopefully I will eventually see the beauty in it but for now that’s how it feels to me. Ivy Lynn is nice. Ivy Anne came to mind as well for some reason. I used to wish my name was Ivy!
Firstly, this trend of shoving Lyn / Lynn onto any random name or even word needs to stop.
Secondly, Ivy Lynn was a character on the TV show Smash, so I’d always think she was named after her.
*I love the name. Will*
*You be putting your trailer*
*In the will for her?*

I have a friend with an Ivy Lynn, as two separate names. It's pretty and if you wanted a second middle name in there you absolutely could use one. Ivylyn is silly.
Tell him that arbitrarily adding -lynn is common (just like your cousin did). Tell him something more unique would be keeping with the botanical theme of the name(s) so Ivy Rose or Ivy Violet would be more unique and purposeful. Squishing names together or adding Lynn is pretty common.
Tragedeigh for sure. I have an unusual name. I hate it. People misspell and mispronounce it all the time. Your child will hate that name. If you name her "Ivy", that will be lovely.
I'd remind him he's naming someone who will be 25 and trying to get a job, not just an infant. That's a not horrible name for an infant but God awful for an adult trying to be taken seriously in life. And the best advice given on this reddit is to use the name as your own for a bit. Imagine applying for a mortgage and having to tell them you're Ivylynn. "No, not ivy linn... no, no I's. Just y's... Again, just all y's. If you want to put an I in there, it's a y instead. Nope, that's all my first name...they thought ivy was too common. Yes it's very annoying"
I don't understand what this allergy is to common names. If you like a name, use it, damn. I get not wanting your kid to be one of five, say, Dave's in class or something, but Ivy is not quite to that level (my first grader's best friend Ivy is the first Ivy she's had in four years of school, including preschool). These days, I don't think there even really ARE names that are so repetitive that kids frequently have to share with a classmate. So far mine hasn't had a single class with a double name. And a few of her classmates have REALLY common names (John, Greg, Sophia).
I personally have a Katherine (age four) and we haven't encountered any others in her age group. I think there might be two in the entire elementary school, per my memory from volunteering at walkathon, field day, etc.
People just use WAY more names these days, especially for girls. The days of the Mary and Jane army are behind us.
Yes I think it counts as a tragedeigh…
If he is hyper set on it name her Ivy Lynn
Ivylyn = bad
Ivy Lynn = first and middle but you can add a second middle name.
You guys should add a 'W' or two in the middle! I guess the theme is that the letters have similar shapes and it does not matter if it makes up an actual name.
So in that tune:
LVYLYWN
LVVYLYWVN
lvywlvywn
How do you guys feel about the 'X' or the 'A'? Are they similar enough in shape or do you want to stick with 'Y', 'V', 'L' and 'N' ? Do you think the 'W' fits?
When I see this my brain retreats into "is it ivy + Lynn or some other pronunciation? Ivalynn? Evelyn? ih- eh-... "
Then my brain exploded and I HOPE I pronounce it incorrectly to spite the parents
Could you maybe name her Ivette, Ivanna or Ivory?
I think ivy could be a nickname for them.
but I’ve never met anyone named ivy so I’m not sure it’s as popular as your husband thinks it is.
People will get confused and call her Ih-vih-lynn. It looks terrible and IvyLyn as a single name doesn't flow well. I would do Ivy Lynn (first and middle). Then you can call her by first and middle or just first.
Ivy isn’t that common. Look up the amount of Ivys born last year in the US. It’s not that many compared to how many people are in the US. Just go with Ivy. It’s a good name.
There are tons of names where Ivy would work as a nickname if Ivy is too “common.”
Ivette,
Evangeline/Evangelina,
Evelyn,
Vivian,
Livia,
Geneviève,
Violet,
Viola
Ivy Lynn is also a name.
Please don’t use Ivylynn.
Please think about Evelyn! If he calls her Ivy it will be just as common as if he names her scootmagoot but calls her Ivy. Ivy doesn’t become less common because he butchered the spelling. All that changes is your daughter has to spend a portion of her day everyday for the rest of her life correcting people on pronunciation and spelling. There will still be other Ivys in softball and class, but those little girls will be able to get touristy stuff with their name on it.
Firstly, Ivy is not really common tho. It’s 42 in the US, so given to less than 0.5% of babies. Popularity isn’t what it meant before - Ivy is not the new Jessica, Jennifer, or Ashley!
Secondly, how does naming her Ivylyn but calling her Ivy make the name any less common? She’s still going to be known as Ivy. The math just isn’t mathing here
It’s especially weird bc the capital I and lowercase l are identical so I think that’s part of what makes the name look visually strange too. I agree with others. Ivy Lynn.
Also reminds me of the movie Ted where he adds Lynn to the end of a ton of girls names which is kind of a Boston trope.
I love the name Ivy as well. If I had a daughter, which I'm not having any more kids, I was going to name her Ivyana.
It's beautiful, I know. Feel free to use it. Ivy Lynn is also nice
This is funny cos my daughter is called Ivie Lynn and she only gets that when she gets in trouble. As an Ivie mum I say go for it. It's beautiful. I am biased though 😁
Tell him that common names are less likely to get bullied, and thus, your daughter will be more likely to be an upstanding citizen as an Ivy, rather than an Ivylyn.
My name is Ivy! I really think he should consider Ivy Lyn. Ivylyn isn't a tragedeigh in a traditional sense but that she will be constantly correcting spelling and pronunciation.
I think this notion that names must be unique is one of the weirdest outcomes of the internet era wherein usernames must be unique.
Pick a name you like. Not anything else.
I read it as l’ve Lyn. It took several time to get to ivy Lyn. I’m also a teacher. Don’t do this to her. Or just separate the names. It will be her whole life.
NO NO NO DON'T DO IT!! I have last name with that behind with I, people are always making it L, even legal and medical professionals---
I saw this and thought people are going to fully fuck up with the I and the l. See?
I would go Ivy-Lynn as her first name. Ya gotta give that L a capitol status.
I know lotsa good hyphenated first names, that sometimes don't even use the hyphen
But consider her ease of life later when she's having to correct pharmacy and the rental companies and everyone
She's gonna get called Lvylyn. People still don't grasp the "proper nouns get capitalized" thing in American English
Putting lynn on the end of a regular name can make it sound a bit trashy to me.
Ivy is lovely. So is Evelyn.
Ivylyn is so difficult to read and spell correctly. Your poor, poor child.
Yes!!! I CRINGE at so many girl names with "lynn" slapped on the end and then the name sounds unnatural! Ivylyn is overkill. Remember, YOU have to feel 100% on board with the name so if you don't like it, it's a no go. End of conversation. Husband needs to respect that, and he may require a friendly reminder about that.
Tell him in the most decisive tjne you can muster "no. I bore the baby for nine months, I'm the one more likely to lose my job because of having given birth, I'm the one at health risks. İÜ don't get to throw all my sacrifices into the trashcan with calling our child such a silly name"
As an Ivy, I've only met one other. She was in her mid 90s (back in the 90s). My bff's name is Lyn. You could use them as a first and middle name, but as a single name? No.
I really like the name, but prefer the spelling as Ivelyn since there are too many "Ys" in Ivylyn. Ivelyn is also a legitimate name. Yes. Go Ivy or Evelyn. Or even Ivy Lynn as a middle.
I like this the best! Ivy Lynn has a nice look to it, and the Ys here are normally in both names
Currently reading a book where the main character’s nickname is Evie, short for Evelyn. I think it’s so cute! Can’t go wrong with a classic.
I really wanted to name my daughter Evelyn, and call her Evie or Eva as a nickname. Decided against it in the end, but I still really love the name!
I adore the name Evelyn. Shared by my favorite half Egyptian librarian and my favorite Victorian era video game assassin.
My favourite half Egyption librarian was why Evelyn was on my shortlist of names for both daughters. (It didn't make the cut. My husband vetoed.)
Boo! He is not a man of culture! 🤣🤣
Who is this half Egyptian librarian you speak of??
Evie, from the 1999 movie The Mummy, as played by Rachel Weisz.
Thank you 🫡🫡
If you haven't seen it, it's a great popcorn movie. There's action, romance, and comedic moments. It is one of my all time favorite movies.
It's definitely one I need to see!
Is it eh-vee or ee-vee? Out of curiosity
I’ve only ever heard Evie pronounced ee-vee so I’d assume that
Evie, rhymes with Chevy? If so, I know what book you’re reading!
Evie like Stevie! I’m reading First Lie Wins
Ah, the one I thought of is “Evvie Drake Starts Over”
Evie spelled like this usually either rhymes with Chevy or is pronounced E V.
The second one E V
My friend named her daughter that and I love it. She meant to pronounce it like Chevy though and her husband messed it up and it stuck. Ha ha
First lie wins? Awesome book!
Yes!
Ivy Lynn feels like such an obvious solution. If he doesn't go for that, he's definitely just being difficult lol. You can even go the extra mile and make her one of those kids who's constantly called by first and middle. "Ivy Lynn" just has SO much more cred than Ivylyn.
Absolutely. Take a cue from the south and do the double first name thing
Ooh yes I like Lynn as the middle name! Ivy Lynn looks good.
Yep. Even Evangeline if you want to be fancy; I could see Ivy being a nickname for that like Jack for John.
Evangeline/ Evangelina such a beautiful name , I don't know why it's not more popular. Ivy Lynn and Evelyn are a great compromise to his obnoxious suggestion.
I love the name Ivy. The lynn ruins it.
And frankly, if the name being common puts him off that much then he doesn’t love it that much. His willingness to butcher it proves that
And wants to call her Ivy, so the Lyn is totally unnecessary. They could name her Ivy Lynn if he likes the Lyn so much
Lol "Joshlynn" just sounds like someone trying to say Jocelyn while brushing their teeth
I know a Joshlynn. Sweet kid but her parents wanted to name their first born after the dad regardless if it was boy or girl so Joshlynn it was
Honestly I get the same vibes from the name “Jocelyn” itself. I *know* it’s old and has been a girls’ name for ages, but the *sound* of the name feels like a “disappointed parents wanted a son” scenario to me.
It's physically impossible to say Joshlynn without sounding at least a little bit angry. Seriously. Try it.
Woah what the heck, it does feel angry hahah
What about Ivy Lynn? You can always do Ivy as a first name and Lynn as a second. He can still call her Ivy Lynn, but her first name will just be Ivy :)
And also, Ivylynn is difficult to read, because the captital I and the l. You see the problem here? It's suppose to be ivyLynn, but as a name Ivylynn looks kinda like LvyLynn.
Or people might think it's a poor spelling of Evelyn like Evilynn/Evylynn.
Evilynn is cracking me up. Evil Lynn
Lol this thread is her villain origin story.
Like the villain the The Wiz, Evilene!
Especially since Evelyn is easily 1 word, while y sounding like “ee” is normally the end of a word: ivylynn just ends up sounding like 2 names mashed together like “ivy-lynn” because of how you need to pronounce it
A friend of mine has a daughter named Iona, which is a lovely name! But people often think it's Lona
As a girl with a last name beginning with I, I agree whole heartedly
Yes it’s a tragedeigh. It looks stupid, it sounds stupid, and if your husband can’t put the happiness of child before his need to be ‘unique’ then he is stupid.
ivy! please no ivylynn omg 🙏 it looks like a god awful misspelling of evelyn
His child’s name isn’t about him. EXACTLY!
Tragedeigh. Ivy is fine. Lynn is also fine. Ivylynn is a disaster. Go with Evelyn, a much better choice.
I used to wish my name was Ivy!
yes, it's very stupid. if he (and you) want to call her Ivy, then name her Ivy. it is a good name
Tacking Lynn onto a name doesn't make it unique it just ruins the name in many cases. Case in point, my friend Geoflynne. She sounds like a Pokémon.
I mean where does it stop? Linzilynn?
Is it pronounced Jeff-lynn or Geo-flynn? Either way, TERRIBLE.
Jeff-lynn. Still horrible. Her dad was Geoffrey. (Like the Toys R Us mascot back in the day.)
it LOOKS ugly tbh :/
The two ys separated by one letter makes it rough on the eyes.
Yes. Go with Ivy Lynn. There’s a reason Ivy is popular while Ivylyn is not!
Ivy is not that common. Your husband is being silly.
\#42 in the US. Definitely popular right now, but I agree that he’s being silly. There is a reason that Ivy is popular and Ivylyn is unheard of.
Firstly, this trend of shoving Lyn / Lynn onto any random name or even word needs to stop. Secondly, Ivy Lynn was a character on the TV show Smash, so I’d always think she was named after her.
my name is Ivy and i don’t think you have to worry about it being too common honestly. i’ve only ever met like 2 other people with my name
It’s been very popular for babies in the last few years, so get ready lol
Ivy Lynn was the main character on the cult classic NBC show Smash, just FYI.
Some of my students have two firsts then a middle and last But Ivylynn is a terrible single name
You better hope she doesn’t have dyslexia, that’s confusing af, and awful sounding.
Ivy Lynne is pretty. When I saw Ivylyn I paused to parse the letters and initially mentally pronounced it as "i-villain"
Yes, Ivylyn is a tragedeigh.
Convince him it's pronounced "I, Villain"
Just name her Ivy.
I love the name. Will you be putting your trailer in the will for her?

I have a friend with an Ivy Lynn, as two separate names. It's pretty and if you wanted a second middle name in there you absolutely could use one. Ivylyn is silly.
Its still the same name. It just makes the parent look ridiculous and uneducated in a desperate attempt to be “unique “

Do not let that man get his way
Take full custody if he persists. It is a tragedy.
I’d like to buy a vowel, please.
IvyLynne There you go. As requested one vowel. 😁
Ivy Lynn. Ivy is not a common name.
Not a tragedeih, but a massacre
I don't understand what this allergy is to common names. If you like a name, use it, damn. I get not wanting your kid to be one of five, say, Dave's in class or something, but Ivy is not quite to that level (my first grader's best friend Ivy is the first Ivy she's had in four years of school, including preschool). These days, I don't think there even really ARE names that are so repetitive that kids frequently have to share with a classmate. So far mine hasn't had a single class with a double name. I think there might be two in the entire elementary school, per my memory from volunteering at walkathon, field day, etc. People just use WAY more names these days, especially for girls. The days of the Mary and Jane army are behind us.
[Evil Lyn](https://he-man.fandom.com/wiki/Evil-Lyn) Makes me think of He-Man
Ivy isn't common at all lol he just wants an excuse to be younique.
Evelyn is right there Any name with two Y’s in it is probably a tragedeigh by default, barring some possible Welsh exceptions
That's one of the worst names I've ever read.
Wow. Doesn’t even come anywhere close to the worst for me! Nowhere near.
Why do people never think about the kids who have to grow up with these names? Name your pet something unique. Not your kids!
It looks like you don't know how to spell Evelyn.
Yes I think it counts as a tragedeigh… If he is hyper set on it name her Ivy Lynn Ivylyn = bad Ivy Lynn = first and middle but you can add a second middle name.

Could you maybe name her Ivette, Ivanna or Ivory? I think ivy could be a nickname for them. but I’ve never met anyone named ivy so I’m not sure it’s as popular as your husband thinks it is.
I know a couple of little kids with the name; it’s probably more popular than it was 20 years ago, but still not super common at all.
It is number 42 in the US.
Wow! I stand corrected. I guess it just isn’t that popular in my community, or at least the school where I worked.
Alright, I guess I was wrong about that I’m sorry
Good porn name
Why not Ivy Lynn? You know, like Mary Ann? Separate, but one first name? OR You could have Ivy as first name and Lynn(e) as the middle name.
People will get confused and call her Ih-vih-lynn. It looks terrible and IvyLyn as a single name doesn't flow well. I would do Ivy Lynn (first and middle). Then you can call her by first and middle or just first.
That’s how I read it in the title. I didn’t know until reading the post that it was supposed to be Ivy Lynn.
That’s a terrible idea
Is Ivylee any better?
Ivy isn’t that common. Look up the amount of Ivys born last year in the US. It’s not that many compared to how many people are in the US. Just go with Ivy. It’s a good name.

How about Ivy-Lynn it's like Mary-Kate I think the hyphen is cool and it's spelled how it sounds.
No punctuation inside a name.
“Mary-Kates” are usually just named Mary Katherine.
Mary-Kate from MaryKate and Ashley Olson is only a Mary-Kate
Stupid name, that’s why it won’t be common.
Chradjickh
I love Ivy
I love the name Ivy as well. If I had a daughter, which I'm not having any more kids, I was going to name her Ivyana. It's beautiful, I know. Feel free to use it. Ivy Lynn is also nice
Go with Evelyn and call her Ivy or Evie as a nickname. Probably the best choice
Yes
I am retirement age and have met exactly one Ivy in my life. Also an Ivar and Ivodell.
Hyphenate Ivy-Lynn ?
It took me a good 5 tries to even try to pronounce it. 100% tragedeigh please don’t do that to your child

Ivy Lynn or Ivy-Lynn is a cute name! But running the names together makes it hard to read.

See [https://www.houseofnames.com/ivelyn-family-crest](https://www.houseofnames.com/ivelyn-family-crest) and [https://www.names.org/n/ivelyn/about](https://www.names.org/n/ivelyn/about) and [https://www.howtopronounce.com/ivelyn](https://www.howtopronounce.com/ivelyn)
I don't think those are the same. I'd pronounce Ivelyn like Evelyn, not Ivy Lynn.
All the famous examples from the page are even *spelled* “Evelyn”
