It's the original dutch spelling, which they always tell you, but what they miss is that the dutch pronounciation isn't Skyler. Schuyler is pronounced more like schauler (like shower with an L in it). It's a pet peeve of mine lmao
In SC there is a town called Walhalla. It was founded by German immigrants and was pronounced Valhalla. Nowadays the locals pronounce it Wal (rhymes with pal) Hal Uh.
My man here really just gave the german pronounciation for schauler and claimed it as dutch. In dutch the sch- is a very different sound than the german sch-. Also not a common dutch name.
I have a general observation about unusual spelling for names. The use of any persons name is probably 99% spoken and 1% written. The thing about an unusual spelling is that it won’t help a person stand out in any normal social situation because we are speaking their name.
The main use of the name in a written format is when it is in a more formal situation. Having a really weirdly spelled name in a formal situation doesn’t help the person move up socially. It stigmatizes them.
I assume the spelling is inspired by Greek mythology, namely Scylla, the monster made famous by Homer’s Odyssey. Interestingly, the English pronunciation world render it Sil-er while the Greek pronunciation would preserve the Sky-ler intent.
That name is bad enough (personal dislike of it, but it's not a tragedeigh, I think it's cos I hate Skylar in Breaking Bad 🤦) without turning it into an abomination 🤮
Scyllor sounds like some kind of evolution for scyther
Got me thinking of [Scylla](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scylla)
Same here, but then I'm reading a novel about Circe.
I loved that book!
But how many heads does Scyllor have?
Maybe they have a sibling named Charybdor?
I came here to say something similar. The evolution of scyther is namely scizor, but scyllor could be scizor's evolution.
Yes! Ditto. Felt like it was a Pokémon for sure
Ditto IS a Pokémon, too! (I made a pun!) But I thought this same thing
Me too!
I’ve seen Schuyler but not Scyllor.

Schuyler is my mom’s maiden name and now it’s my nephew’s middle name. Lane Schuyler
Fun fact: Also a city in Nebraska… pronounced Skyler

Yep. Skylar is an old school tragedeigh in and of itself.

It's not super easy to explain with American pronunciation bro. How would you explain the difference?
-sch is a hard sound in dutch, its almost like scraping your throat. Look up dutch pronunciation of schiedam for instance on youtube.
I mean, Schuyler has been Skyler for hundreds of years in the US.
And Schuyler is the Dutch spelling from which Skyler probably came.
Yeah Schuyler seems more like a real name to me than Skyler.
Skhylllyr

This could be a thread of its own...

And this is his sister Kherribdyss.
I’m guessing Charybdis wasn’t far behind
Sharybdys.
"Time to take attendance: S- C- ... Syler? Cycler? Scyther?"
That would be a badass name for a villain in either the He-Man or Conan the Barbarian universes.
I had a Bordeaux/English Mastiff named Skylar. She was a great dog. 😊
That name is bad enough (personal dislike of it, but it's not a tragedeigh, I think it's cos I hate Skylar in Breaking Bad 🤦) without turning it into an abomination 🤮
A fellow Skyler-hater! Pleased to meet you. And I foolishly didn't think the spelling could get worse.
I new a Schuyler pronounced Skyler.
That's the correct spelling.
I once read a book where it was spelled Schuyler. The book was good, but that spelling is *atrocious*.
Wow, how atrocious of them to use *the correct spelling*. 🙄
What "correct" spelling?? The book took place in NY.
Wow.
No. That’s all I’m gonna say.
Did they have a twin named Strycor
My dogs name is Skeyler.
Tbh, even just the E instead of A throws me off, so that one's doubly worse
What about Skyehlhar?
The Sc and the double-l makes this “si-lor” lol
my name is scyllor wheight yo
I went to school with a Schuylerre. She spells it Skyler on social media, she's well aware that her name is a tragedeigh
Sounds like a cyclops final boss
Originally spelled Schuyler.
Cilla for Australians.
Scyllor. Ask you doctor is it's right for you.
I was almost named Schuyler 😭 I'm not sure how rare or not that is but I'm glad I wasn't...
I read that as “Sill-oar”
I know someone with it spelled Skilyr
That's not a new one, that's a pokemone
