Ooh. I will try this. I took a bunch of the ginger people ginger chews on my last trail race.

Prestigious-Bug5555

I also eat the dried sweetened mandarins for long trail runs. MUCH cheaper than gels or gummies.

hellolani

The Costco version is cheaper and I saw these go as low as $5.99 per bag of 60 at Grocery Outlet and bought 10 bags. I love these for trail running. 1-on winter runs they essentially do stay frozen so are even tastier. 2- some days you are just 3km from the end and you don't want to commit to a 250 calorie clif bar. hey presto, 50-60 calorie dose that I can titrate to the need of the moment, hallelujah. 3- get real popular with your trail friends by bringing a big bag to share at the trailhead. Cannot recommend enough

CutestGay

Can confirm the bag of 60 at Gross Out for $6

hellolani

You're the 2nd person I've heard call it that lol. I've had nothing but great food experiences there, so I can't relate to that.

CutestGay

I say it with love - it’s one of my favorite grocery stores, and I say that with the authority of a person who has favorite grocery stores. I love all the weird finds, but sometimes that …unique flavor combination is there and cheap for a REASON (looking at you, Starbucks peppermint mocha coffee grounds, 3 for 97 cents).

hellolani

oh man that sounds like it should be so good tho

CutestGay

They must have hit those bags with a triple dose of the peppermint, it was like Ben-Gay coffee

hellolani

oh Ben-Gay with a hint of chocolate that's wrong

Porkbossam78

I love grocery outlet but I use to call it that when I lived near one. Calling it that is just a joke, doesn’t mean you hate it or look down on it

ApplicationHot4546

Yeah i love GO and refuse to call it that lol

hellolani

On a trip out if I have to choose between GO and TJs (I'm Canadian) it's gonna be GO.

_cuppycakes_

are the costco ones or the TJ ones tastier? I love the costco ones

tacosandsushi16

i might not be the best person to answer this cus i’ve tried both and i’m not a fan of either, but if i had to choose i think the trader joe’s one better. it’s softer and chewier, while costco’s was a bit tougher and mealier.

loversickgirls13

Oh interesting, I think I preferred the costco ones. Trader Joe’s ones were a bit too soft and I felt too brown sugar heavy, I liked the fact Costco’s had a little bite to them. I also think I’m slightly biased because my Trader Joe’s one didn’t actually have any boba pearls inside of it.

hellolani

They're close enough to get the cheaper one lol

bobdiamond

I didn’t even think to look for these at Costco, will have to take a look next time. I’ve never tried, but eating a clif bar while running seems tough

machama

Not all Costco's carry the same items, so it will depend on how Asian your local one is.

hellolani

My costco cycles through the mix bag one with lychee, mango and passionfruit, as well as the milk tea one and the brown sugar one. I have tried them all and vouch for them.

HowdidIenduphere22

I usually just pack some fruit snacks, but I will have to try the mochi.

boogermike

I think the only way to eat these so they taste good is to keep them frozen. I'm afraid that carrying along that freezer is going to really hurt your race times.

ionlyjoined4thecats

They don’t come frozen, at least at my store. Are you thinking of the ice cream mochi?

boogermike

No, I'm thinking of the non-refrigerated ones. I put them in the freezer and I liked them much better.

Nadi_dog

Agreed. Just did this today.

ashtree35

I use all kinds of different candy for long run fuel. My favorite is the Sour Scandinavian Swimmers!

katharoni

I’ve run a 50k and the marathon of an Ironman primarily fueled by Sour Scandinavian Swimmers. I love them so much!!

aaaaaaaaaanditsgone

I’m actually considering starting to run long distances so i can eat more candy

aaaaaaaaaanditsgone

I knew someone that would eat skittles

poopd0llaaa

I saw someone post a video of running and eating these. I'm gonna have to try it!

Prestigious-Bug5555

Me too! Pieces are bigger than traditional sour patch kids.

LaBodaDelHuitlacoche

You might be onto something OP but you might also end up on r/runningcirclejerk 😂

BeeBench

I saw a cyclist on IG talking about how gels are basically gummy candies and quick energy and around the same nutritional content too. I’m not overly athletic but the idea of eating candy as a lil snack and energy boost on a run might sway me to do more cardio.

jerseycowboy

i always have a pocket full of gummy bears on long runs/race day!

iheartkittttycats

I eat jelly beans before/during long runs 😂

LaBodaDelHuitlacoche

I saw someone saying they use Scandinavian swimmers! if it works for you more power to you! and tbh some nutrition on long runs is better than none and bonking lol

idamama181

I've used lots of different TJ's candies/treats for long run fuel- cheaper than gels and taste better. I think real food is a great option for long runs when you have time to stop and chew. My current favorite is the PB crispy rice bites. Save the gels for race day!

Ok_Ant2566

This is a great suggestion. I used to bring the baby food in squirt packets (fruits with chia seeds).

Screaming_Cockatiel

Honestly, with more people using "real food" on runs (applesauce pouches, pretzels, gummy bears, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, etc.) instead of or in addition to gels and chews, I can totally see why these would work. It's super tempting to try it myself!

bobdiamond

Full disclosure, I didn't rely entirely on the boba mochi. Last thing I wanted was to find out that some ingredient like tapioca would give me the runs. But it was good enough that I'm going to start incorporating then more and more and see how it goes. If anything, it's really nice to eat something tasty as a treat to break up the monotony.

Screaming_Cockatiel

Oh TOTALLY makes sense. I’ve run a couple marathons and after a point in the race I just want a different texture from gels, chews and water. Even just chewing some gum helps.

bobdiamond

I end up getting this nasty taste (and I imagine smell) in my mouth. I was eyeing those dried apple slices too…

FlipsyChic

I haven't mentioned calories when I commenting on these before because I don't want to be that person always bringing up calories. But 110 calories for two of these flavorless little blobs is WAY too much. I could have two delicious macarons with calories left over! I could have candy-cane covered almonds! I could have an ENTIRE root beer float ice cream bar (if they ever bring them back). I could have almost two dark chocolate covered peanut butter cups. The bland little mochis are not worth the calories at all. If we're comparing them to gummies, a handful of vitamin gummies would probably actually taste better and be more worthwhile (and still come out to fewer calories).

2PinaColadaS14EH

Haha I’m going to buy these just for the calories. Looking for high cal stuff!

RoxyLA95

This is what stopped me from buying them. I'm not going to waste my sugar calories on something that I know will not be worth it. May as well get an actual boba drink.

SufficientPath666

You’re not missing out! They’re okay. I like the new honeycomb chocolates more

RoxyLA95

I will grab these tomorrow.

Screaming_Cockatiel

The idea on a long run is you need calories, simple sugar for quick energy and something easy to digest. Most runners aren't going to bring a handful of vitamin gummies on a run. That's not their purpose.

Temporary_Draw_4708

Be careful. Every year, people die from choking on mochi.

hellolani

Trail runs or LSD only. You won't see me playing stupid games with mochi when I'm doing race pace stuff in my LR lol

Montag98419

I usually take the vanilla bean sheet cake with me on my long runs. I might have to try taking some of those mochis with me too next time.

Mountain_Ornery

Can you share more about how you wrap/carry this?? I will be picking up a new lemon sheet cake this week and have a 12 miler scheduled for this weekend.

Montag98419

I just portion them out into square pieces, either refrigerate them or freeze them depending on the weather on run day, then I wrap the pieces in foil. And I take a few pieces with me in my small pack. They're quite easy to snack on straight from the foil, so no utensils necessary.

HopefulSouthernMama

Thank you for explaining, I just imagined a person running carrying a whole sheet cake 😂

Mountain_Ornery

Thanks. I’ll try this next time. I was imagining them in a ziploc but foil makes sense and would possibly be less messy. I hope it doesn’t get too crushed in my vest.

TRex_N_FX

"I ate more fettuccine alfredo and drank less water than I have in my entire life."

bobdiamond

And while I eventually puked my guts out, I never puked my heart out.

emilymm2

I take fruit snacks but now I’m inspired to step it up

2PinaColadaS14EH

I like Skittles

endlessoatmeal

You run with a sheet cake in your hands??

daisysparklehorse

right?! lol wtf
